  • This week I welcome Spencer Schneider, a cult survivor, lawyer and life guard trainer from New York who wrote the fascinating book "Manhattan Cult Story: My Unbelievable True Story of Sex, Crimes, Chaos and Survival." This story demonstrates how some preconceived notions of how cults operate are totally wrong and the red flags are not always as obvious as you think. Spencer does a great job describing what his cult experience was like and how he got out. Enjoy!

I have been involved in a Wiccan group for almost 30 years, and often worry about whether that is a cult. Then I look at the criteria for cults and realize a) its various High Priestesses and teachers, scattered around the world, are all working "real" jobs and living middle class lifestyles, at best, b) there are no dues and all fees for classes and events are based on ability to pay (I've done a LOT for free and still do 30 years later, though I pay the nominal fee if I can) c) before Zoom there were virtually no large centralized gatherings and communication was inconsistent, and d) one of the main things you learn in your first class is this is NOT for everybody and you should always ask lots of questions and if someone tells you there is only one way you should run in the opposite direction as fast as you can. Those seem like good things to look for if you wonder if you're in a cult. Thanks, Chris, for another wonderful video --- I love this channel.

Julie I love how you analyzed your Wicca group. Seems to me like you grabbed the key factors for identifying a cult and found that the Wicca group most likely wasn’t a cult. I’d add that I bet they didn’t come chasing after you when you left, or gave you any real trouble about leaving either!

I just finished reading the book (I came on RUclips knowing there would be an interview with the author.) it is a good, easy read, and Spencer keeps a story interesting. Of note, is what y’all touched on the podcast, is the nature of the long con; cults don’t ask you for your bank account number or to give up your bonus a couple of days after you arrive. There’s a period of cultivation where they welcome you in with open arms, but start exercising limitations on your life, and before you know it, you’re neck deep in it. They restructure your sense of the universe, so that what you “must” do always benefits the leader/group, but it always comes at your sacrifice and expense.
Spencer also said something very interesting towards end of the book; that young professionals in New York or Boston (specially the ‘80s) worked hard and had little in the way of community, so they found it hard to resist the temptation of someone telling them what to do so that all would be OK. The easy answers we all crave are never answers and your life is never easy because of them.

Interesting. Good for him waking up and turning around and helping others 💛
I hadn't heard of the UK law regarding coercive control in a family situation.
Perhaps you can give us an overview of the worldwide progress being made to educate and eradicate coercive control. This really is the next big step in understanding after narcissistic personalities became well-known and recognized to a point I'm tired of hearing about it 😴
Society changes so quick now with social media. Overnight.
Just like the latest health kick we got latest mind kicks. Not all good but not all bad.
    Really interesting times 🤗

Very interesting interview. It seems like an atypical cult in a lot of ways. This has definitely broadened my understanding of the complexity and nuance of cult dynamics.

About the type of people these cults attract: from what I see, they attract many intelligent, conscientious, hard working people. This might be an American phenomenon since we are all taught that hard work is the key to success, not only for your profession and making a living, but also to solve psychological or spiritual issues such as finding meaning, community, etc. You’re not supposed to learn to be with yourself, you’re supposed to work yourself into oblivion to be part of something bigger, which plays into cults’ hands. Most cults don’t want slackers, they want worker bees.

I think you're confusing a highly educated person with an intelligent person.
They are 2 distinct traits. One person can be both, but most dont
