Since MLMs usually make people lose money, it means you most likely spent many years losing money.

"Sometimes that happens when we don't take care of ourselves" - that is the worst thing I've ever heard someone say to a pregnant person. After a miscarriage a person is usually already feeling guilty thinking it was caused by something they did. This is why the first thing a medical professional typically says is "this wasn't your fault." To outright insinuate that her miscarriage had anything to do with her eating patterns or weight is so terrible. I can't even fully express how angry that made me.

As a supervisor for >25 years, MLMs listed on resumes were definitely a red flag for a number of reasons:
    1. Participation in an MLM can indicate poor judgement
    2. Participation in an MLM can mean that the applicant has wasted time when they could have been doing better things to advance their career in our field
    3. There is a risk that an applicant currently involved in an MLM will bring that crap into our office and pester co-workers and our clients
We didn't deal with financial issues, so unlike the horror story in this episode, it wasn't an automatic trip to the circular file, but seeing that on a resume would make me rate the resume lower than I might have otherwise.

I was in Monat for 3.5 years and left earlier this year. I am now polishing up my resume for other sales opportunities and so happy I found this because I was going to put that I was in sales for Monat for that many years. Luckily I was also a part time jewelry designer during my Monat years (currently still am) so I'll emphasize those skills over the ones I learned in my MLM experience. Thanks for the insight! Also wanted to share that my son has watched my highs and lows in Monat. He is 12 and now hears me playing your videos and fully understands why I left. And he even tells me that he loves how I'm not spending so many late night hours on Zoom meetings and how I'm not stressing over end of month goals anymore. A friend told me about how she got this GREAT job in a dental office. It was really a job she actually liked going to. ... but in a few weeks, she was apparently pressured into joining into meetings for "increasing teamwork" because "they're like a FAMILY in that office!" When she wouldn't go, there were passive-aggressive pressures. Finally, she told me that she was worried because the job market is REALLY tight here and when the next job calls her reference for her LAST job, they can't say more than a person did/didn't work there... but the verbal tone of that is enough to make or break your next job. She had kids to pay for, on top of just herself. If she didn't start going to these after-work get-togethers, they might cut her hours or fire her for "poor performance." I'm in a right-to-work state. You can basically do anything here if you're an employer (or a landlord.)
Scientology. It was Scientology. They wanted her to join Scientology and hand over her paycheques to them, essentially keeping her perpetually broke so she'd rely on other Scientologists to support her and her kids. So they'd join Scientology, too, seeing the 'outside world' as harsh and proof that Scientology is Good and Nice. And if they're bad or things don't happen how anyone wants, it's because they weren't Really believers or they aren't working hard enough.
Cult tactics are extremely similar to MLMs. The person who's in one doesn't even CONSIDER that what they're doing is predatory, once they're past a certain point.

@@JuMiKu nobody said they should not get a second chance but when I as a recruiter see an MLM added to a resume I will refuse the candidate. The fact they put it on there shows they do consider it real valid experience and/or signals to me they have not left it behind entirely 🤷🏻‍♀️ most people searching a job after MLM did not only do the MLM for years. Few people make enough to not do anything else on the side. So to not have a gap leave out the mlm and put the other thing on instead. Even raising kids is valid and for me does not count as a gap as the person was actually working hard

    Re: MLMs on resumes
Like you said in the video, if someone gets caught in an MLM for a lengthy period of time but eventually gets out, they now have a gap on their resume.
So that person now has to decide between:
    a) Having a big gap on their resume, which will likely to be a major red flag for employers and could lead to some hiring managers throwing their resume in the trash
    OR
    b) Listing their MLM experience, which could also be a major red flag for employers and could lead to some hiring mangers throwing their resume in the trash.
For that reason, I'm not a fan of the whole "if I see an MLM on a resume, it automatically goes in the trash" thing.
Yes, if there's no end date on the listing or the listing claims that they were a "CEO" or "business owner" or uses the MLM's weird language, that's definitely a red flag! But if there's a clear end date and the person isn't misrepresenting what they did in the MLM, I think it's worth keeping that person in consideration and asking about their MLM experience at the interview.
At the end of the day, we all want people in MLMs to get out of them, right? If so, ex-distributors need to be able to find employment outside of the MLM world. Automatically throwing their resumes in the trash just because they list their MLM experience isn't going to accomplish that.

My kids are climbers, and there's a girl on their team who weighs a little more, and the trainers think they have the right to not just comment on that, but actually put a little girl on a scale every other day and try to control how much she loses. We switched teams immediately. It's abusive for a trainer to tell a little girl how much she's supposed to weight, and parents who hear that and then get their child on an app that tracks all their calories and everything they eat are disgusting.

The pregnant woman's story makes me so sad without the MLM. Any decent human, especially a woman, should never callously talk about a woman's miscarriages. Any decent human (with the exception of a medical professional, who would give AMA approved advice without blaming you) would never say YOU WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MISCARRIAGES (I'm shouting because it makes me so, so, so angry). The person who said this is the lowest of the low, I hope that person doesn't claim she's religious (I don't think this would be okay in any religion.). I hope one day she realizes she how vile her statements were and apologizes. I'm praying you and your baby make it through the last few weeks without any issues. I'm praying that your older daughter continues to have progress with her developmental delays. Thanks for sharing your story. This is an example of how desperate these salespeople are. As a competitive figure skater of 20 years, I can totally believe that Isogenix dude just had tons of clients in a rink. Especially 10 years ago, figure skating is in many ways wildly unregulated but usually an extremely large part of skaters’ lives. I had coaches with no actual personal training or nutrition certifications make us do extreme off ice conditioning and push disordered eating practices on us as early as 9 years old. I am so relieved that the figure skater in your story didn’t have her relationship with food ruined by this Isogenix distributor considering that most skaters I have grown up with, MLMs or not, have had to grow out of horrific relationships with food and exercise.

As someone who helps with the hiring process at my company, I 100% agree that when I see a MLM on a resume I automatically reject it/throw it out. It tells me that you have poor judgement, do not do your own research and are susceptible to the opinions of others no matter how misguided. Basically, you won't be a critical thinker and may double down on misguided opinions. Harsh, but it's the truth

The last story made me laugh out loud literally. About 20 years ago my husband was the best man at his friends Wedding. It was a small affair (about 60 people). We got to the reception, the tables were set up in a U formation. Weird, but small gathering so okay. When it was time for the “best man speech” instead of my husband speaking about the loving couple, their up line got up and gave an Amway pitch!! Fortunately we had already turned down the “opportunity” but I was mortified for everyone else. Looking back now I feel sorry that is the memory the have of their wedding.

Story number three really struck me - the one about putting your MLM "work experience" on a resume. All these companies lure you in with all these opportunities they say offer, that you're starting your own business and working for yourself. Someone who has very little experience in sales would think this is an advantage for them and falsely believe this kind of "work" would give them the qualifications they need for a job with a Fortune 500 company - or even a managerial position at a local retail store. To think you have a leg up and then be told that this is detrimental to your professional goals and that you don't have critical thinking skills or marketable competitive qualifications is such a slap in the face. I can't help but think of all those who have been in it for years thinking they were doing themselves a favor.

People who are successful are so for a reason. It’s at the expense of their families. MLMs can absolutely be generational! Living in Utah and as a member of the LDS faith, where MLMs tend to run rampant, it seems normal to join them. I remember growing up and tagging along to parties with my mom. Some family members have been in a bunch of different ones over the years, Mary Kay, Stampin Up, there was a scrapbooking one I can't remember the name of, etc. They join because it seems normal! Their mothers and grandmothers have done it, so they do it. So crazy! I even thought about it when I was younger, but the pay to play kit buying always turned me off to it thankfully.

As a Career Coach and Learning & Development professional who's worked closely with recruiters in both private and public sector I can also confirm that you should absolutely not put an MLM on your resume. Unless the recruiter simply doesn't know it's an MLM and you spin it really well, it would absolutely reflect negatively. Even and sometimes especially for a sales position because if it's a well-known brand being sold, very likely they have a well-established sales culture and with the inconsistent and often terrible sales tactics taught in MLMs they would be weary of someone they may have to train bad habits out of.

RE the children of MLM huns wanting to follow in their footsteps, based on what the homelife of a devoted hun must be like, I doubt her kids got much of her attention at all. They probably get shooed away because it's the end of the month and mama has to rank up. She can't read them stories because she's on her laptop, and they have to stay out of the room when she's on a training call. I bet alot of those kids have terrible memories of what it's like to have a hun for a mom, and maybe they wouldn't want to wish it on their own kids.

MLM's can be generational. I was in Primerica, I actually send you an email about my story, but get to it when you get to it, and there were MANY parents who were getting their kids to join. One of the RVP's had his kids, no older than 5, saying their dream was to work at their "Daddy's business", and one of the SVP's had their kids out recruiting for them at their school because they're too young to start themselves. Even a couple who had to leave to get money to buy food for their kids were trying to get their kids to join.

Similarly, I think it discredits actual doctors' advice in my mind when you know they get kickbacks from pharmaceutical reps for prescribing you certain medications over others.

After I graduated from college, I connected with a local job recruiting business to find a job in the city I was living in. That recruiter told me to put my MLM under job experience. The first two job interviews that I went to, The employers rejected hiring me simply based on that one piece of my résumé. This is such an important topic to talk about because people don’t realize how bad it can be for your professional work history. Having a gap in your résumé isn’t always a red flag, but filling that gap with some thing that the industry as a whole does not take seriously like this, can be a huge problem. Thank you for talking about this because I wish I had known not to put that on my résumé at all, but because the recruiter person told me that I should put it on there, I did. It cost me the opportunity for two different jobs, and we took it off the résumé and I ended up getting the next job I interviewed for, but I still had this huge uncomfortable feeling in my stomach every time I went to an interview.

After Advocare went from multi level to single level I quit and joined zurvuta for a few months and my mom bought products from me but didn't sign up as a distributor. Then I quit that and about a year later I joined LeVel and signed my mom up under me. I lasted 1.5 years and spend 3.5k more than I ever made. My mom is still in it 2.5 years later and is on the fence about leaving. I found the anti mlm community a few months after I left and I'm super thankful as I'm definitely not going to get sucked into another MLM. I've tried to get my mom to quit completely but she's still sold on an MLM making all her dreams come true even though she still hasn't hit the 1st rank in the company with level. It makes me sad that she's lost a lot more money with LeVel than i did, although she won't do a profit and loss statement because she knows she's in the hole. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose. I will say that when I worked hiring for entry level positions in the service/hospitality business, I looked favorably on MLM experience. I saw those individuals as hard working and great with customer service. I was always happy to see that they were getting a real job and out of the MLM. That said, these people could get the job WITHOUT the MLM, but I’m not penalizing them for that experience. I chalk it up like other youth experience (high school organizations, extra curricular, etc). Once you get past an intro level position, I certainly wouldn’t put it on. But I don’t think it’s as detrimental for a young person to have on a resume, as long as they aren’t going in being “pro MLM”

Thankfully I haven’t had a horror story (at least not yet) but yeah it seems like they are everywhere

While I agree for the most part about the resume. As an ex hun, who got divorced and had only SAHM & homeschooling to put along with MLM on resume. I was up front and added in the details that though I was in an MLM I listed what I learned. Including not to be in an MLM. And my honesty and upfront ness with what I learned negative and positive got me the job.
I’m not saying that it will always work like that. But to give hope for someone else who may be in similar shoes that once escaping multiple circumstances you can still find an out

If “Daniel” was only using my fitness pal as his nutrition tool (with a 12 yr old totally inappropriate!) I would bet money he was not a nutritionist.

Those poor girls aren't just going to join mlms because they don't know better, that mom is going to push them into hers. It's so sad.

The 14 year old is an assistant. I hope this mlm isn't effecting her education. I hope she has time to just be a kid and enjoy herself.
