- The Caretaker is a demon in the witcher who is introduced in the Hearts of Stone expansion. But what is the Caretaker? Surprisingly there's a lot to be learnt about demons from him and the cat and the dog's existence. In today's video I'll talk about Gaunter Odi'mm, Olgierd, Iris and their relationship with the Caretaker, demons and monsters in the witcher.

When you consider the variety of horrifying monsters that Geralt has encountered throughout his journey, it is surprising that he is taken aback by the Caretaker upon their first encounter, as indicated by his quote, "what the fuck was that." This fight is one of the most unsettling experiences for him.
cause most types of monsters are things he studied in witcher school, or encountered them during his work. Caretaker was probably one of the only creatures he faced where he had straight up no idea what the hell he was dealing with.
Hearts of stone has to be one of the best story expansions ever made. Id say it's joint beat with Blood and Wine. Excellent video as always Witcher George 😊
Storywise Hearts of Stone is way better but Blood and Wine wins on the rest

As much as I love blood and wine, the 'contract' feeling of hearts of stone was amazing. It was really like playing some old European folk tale. Great music too.

I think he's a flesh golem inhabited by a demon, or other spirit capable of magic, but one that is more reliant on the physical form it's bound to.
I agree. A flesh golem with a demon spirit or spell caster soul makes sense.

I think "Demon" would be a classification of Race. Like Human, Dwarf, Elf, etc. The Cat and Dog both seem to have similar characteristics to each other but The Caretaker is clearly something different. And he's not mindless either. When he lifts his hood to get a better look at Geralt rather than attacking the moment he senses something then that means he is at least intelligent enough to check to see it its an enemy or not. Which is more than most monsters.
Hearts of Stone, had a lot of heart. Truly made me feel for Olgeird, Iris, Geralt, Olgeird's brother, the Frog Prince, gosh. The feels.
i put like 1500+ hours in the witcher 3 and it's one of my favorite games of all time
recently i returned to it and it feels like the first time because it's been a while
and it make me glad that you and other witcher RUclipsrs are still uploading about it
"He is a demon" is, in Witcher canon, them specifically saying The Caretaker defies easy categorization, similar to Relict but with even less definition. Demon largely just refers to things summoned, whether embodied themselves, entrapped ephemerally, or inhabiting a vessel not technically their own.

I always thought of the cat, the dog, the caretaker, Gunter and the crones being different and coming from different places that "the monsters". Their magic seems different too

With Relict monsters being defined as "a creature enduring long after its natural environment has perished" could the Caretaker be a much simpler version of O'Dimm, both feeding on souls?

I would like to add that while not explicitly stated gaunter o dimm is supposed to represent the devil. hearts of stone seems to be an in universe retelling of the legend of master twardowski and the accuracy of the retelling is amazing. It truly goes to show the level of detail CD Project puts into their games.
I still remember the first time i came across the caretaker i was absolutely terrified. It still freaks me out to this day. That whole estate is so creepy.
When I think of the Devil in modern media I think of the guy pretending to be nice to make you sign a contract and gain your soul. When it comes to the powers of demons especially in the Witcher I think their powers are contract based. A bit like the Nen thing in Hunter x Hunter where you can set very preciase restrictions on your power to make it stronger. The Caretaker seems to be able to summon stuff but has placed a condition on it, so he has to kill and bury the victim before summoning. And Gaunter has the whole complete 3 things and I get your soul. When you challenge him he again puts a restriction on himself that if you find him you win. Seems like Demons have a lot of restrictions on their power and the better they work around those restrictions the more powerful they become

I would love a video on his weapon, I wish it was a higher level as I love using it, especially at night (in game), the glow, the sound and the absorbing of health from your enemies makes it great. I think that if you want to pull a demon into our world, you got to gove it a reason. So, probably both cat and dog, as well as the caretaker, have signed contracts with Olgierd - and they were probably worded in a tricky way, hence they cant leave unless a very specific requirements are met. The caretaker could be a much simpler deal - maby he's feeding of sadness, maby he was given something simple, like a lock of hair, or maby he was trapped. It would fit Olgierd. He seems to learn from Gunter.

There was a real dude who got some sort of mold in his face & ended up looking like the caretaker. He was on the Ripleys Believe or Not show years ago.
The Von Everec mansion quest has some Silent Hill vibes: the unnatural fog, the caretaker that remins me SH monsters like Pyramid Head, an alter world born from Iris memories, the Iris's greatest fear (that again look like monsters from Silent Hill)
To add to your point about the broad spectrum of demons. You mentioned the hym, witch was a demon according to the bestiary. The only times you face a hym is in szeligar, with sparrow hawk, and in guanter o dim's realm. So to me that says that G.O.D. has some power over deamons

I draw comparisons to the miasmal/reinald in terms of demon lore. Caretaker is just more Frankenstein vibes. Miasmal kept reinald from aging or dying by inhabiting reinalds body. Demons cannot possess the dead but what would happen if you surgically created an abomination from the dead and reanimated it. The abomination might be able to serve as a vassal to a powerful demon as reanimating serves as the life or soul making this grey area where technically the vassal is living. A demon who is subservient is unique so heres my thoughts on that. The obedient nature of the caretaker would likely stem from the bond between its vassal and the magic that reanimated it. Honestly, this theory impresses me regarding the mage who figured out how to capture and enslave a demon.

Such a cool character and I love that it’s left fairly vague so we can speculate on it. Do we know for certain that he wasn’t one of Olgeirds wishes to Gaunter? Maybe as someone to imprison/ look after Iris?
5:13 I'm glad to see that you seem realize I'm NOT a demon and find that label so uninspired. The cat and dog are entities from another plan, and they admit as much, so not demons per se as they are not necessarily inherently evil. They even seem somewhat compassionate, help Geralt, and are more sapient than sentient.
Your realm has a different view on what a demon is than the realm Geralt lives in. The Caretaker could be looked at as a demon, bound by magic from another plan, and is at least sentient not necessarily sapient. However may not be evil as such unless compelled or bound to be for context.
1:13 Not necessarily, they can be the same type of demon, just more reasonnable, with different tasks and character and shape. Peoples from the same specie and "social" group can have different characters and desires and react differently to strangers.

7:51 I doubt so, wraiths used to be peoples and are a different thing from demons who were never peoples. If he was a wraith, he wouldn't be categorise as a demon.
10:10 Throughout the games, we saw plenty of wraiths, they don't look like the caretaker at all.
You do ask good questions but you might also be overthinking it. Sometimes, things are what they appear to be.
I prefer heart of stone over blood and wine only bc of Gaunter. He's the most interesting character in the whole game in my opinion.

Is Gaunter a creature of the conjuction, like a monster pulled in from another world, or is he something that exists beyond all worlds? The cat and dog both tell Geralt that the place they come from "would mean naught to you". This is unlike the higher vampires, who speak of their world in categories Geralt well understands. This suggests to me that Gaunter, as well as the cat and dog, and by extension the Caretaker, are all beings who exist beyond and above all worlds and universes. They are timeless entities who can enter and exist in any world at any time, but nevertheless are governed by laws that govern even the beyond. Perhaps in this regard they are similar to the White Frost.
ADD: I just remembered that CDPR has said Gaunter was inspired by Leland Gaunt, Stephen King's antagonist from Needful Things. King never says Gaunt is the devil, and given what we know about the Crimson King and Randall Flagg, it's unlikely there even is a Devil proper in King's universe. His universe is more like Lovecraft's universe.
😮 Could it be Gaunter O'Dimm is a product of the Dark Tower? Could Geralt be his world's version of the last gunslinger?
The Caretaker reminds me of the Shadows Of Yharnam from BloodBorne, literally gave me flashbacks of them ☠️

The caretaker could be like some kind of golem, the ones who do nothing but serve the command of the master, in this case Olgierd and the specific instructions given by him.
Gaunter never came off to me as a demon or devil he's something far more horible and ancent a lovecraftian nightmare incomprehensible to us. An ancient trickster like Nyarlathotep. He make devil like deals but it's clear he's something even demons fear. To simply lable him as a God demon or devil takes away from his mystique as a threat in my opinion he is simplely Gaunter O Dim and to know the truth of him would drive you mad.

Odim is probably like a demon Duke. A highest ranking demon. Like Vampires have their elders. Who knows if there is a demon king or vampire king. But I don't think that if Odim was the demon king (most powerful demon), that he would waste his time doing things like leaving their relms to mess around.
A Bes bound into a flesh golem? I pour over the TTRPG, games, and books, and this is my best guess. Perhaps more than one type bound into the body.

I see the demons as contracted beings, the more binding to the contract the more power given to demons drawn into the world through the rituals to summons them. Gaunter on the other hand has to follow rules when interacting with the world, not all of the rules are known, but cannot just use his powers on a whim. The caretaker has set limitations and rules it has to follows as well by the contract that Olgierd signed to bind him to the body. Master Mirror is bound by similar rules to other demons, but he does not have to have contract to maintain a physical form, but he does have multiple deals and plans ongoing even in Witcher 3, who is to say that any of the deals and plans Gaunter has allows him free reign in the world as long as at least one person is tied to a deal or plan of him in the world.
In Gwent card game Caretaker is tagged Relic not Demon (as opposed to GoD)

If you change the word "demon" into "catch all name for unknown magical entities" it becomes easier to understand what a demon is. You don't need to figure out the differences between different demons and rectify that they are demons regardless of the differences that may or may not conflict. And keeping in mind that demon is usually associated with evil it shouldn't be considered a hard rule. The cat and dog were one form of demon and the caretaker was as well but none of them were evil, the cat and dog were neutral-good on a moral scale while the caretaker was straight neutral. The cat and dog understood Iris' plight and were even empathetic towards her though they were bound to her, they didn't want her harmed for their benefit though still wanted freedom. The caretaker on the other hand flat out didn't care one way or the other, he had one job and just the one job. Take care of the garden. Intruders in the garden were a threat to the garden and thus he killed them, then took the time to properly bury them, not a single life outside the grounds was snuffed out because of him. He was just neutral, he wouldn't care if you were on the opposite side of the garden wall throwing insults at him.
For my own view I think the caretaker is more golem than demon, a demonic golem if you will. Demonic magic created the golem so thus it can be classified as a demon. Is it a member of an unknown species? No. Demonic? Yes. Sentient? I don't believe it to be.
Certain dead people could become demons perhaps. Humans who make (and always loose) a pact with Odi'mm do suffer a fate *FAR WORSE* than death. He always gives the vibe that their souls are trapped for eternity in the skulls he takes from his victims. In his missions you do alot around that subject, demons and souls with Olgierd his wife, the demons at his house, his brother.
I need to pay this world a visit
Crazy to think about the fact that with Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, the Witcher 3 proved that extra content can be more than just shitty stuff draining your bank account

Gauntrr o dimm is a jinn. In Arabic folklore they are genies with bad intentions. So not quite the witcher Jinns but more of a classical Jinn.

Gunter Odi'mm is a crossroads demon, he makes deals and some of his deals are very cryptic and can be worded in such ways that he can craft into something far more damaging the the person whom is effected.
but is granted powers by his lord, i don't think he's a god, basically his lord is Satan, and Satan holds all Gunter's powers and abilities, so long as Gunter provides him with the souls of those he deals with, he is free to roam the world as he does, but you have to admit that Olgered did have him stumped for a while, as it was something he couldn't do directly, he had to find someone else to do the dirty work for him because he only has power through his use of his contracts and Garalt was his best option.
my guess is he had to use another demon to cause that storm to wreck the boat Garlt was onboard, i don't think that was his powers that made that possible.
Alternatively, and much more in topic with the story: The Demon that got channeled into the caretaker isn't lower. It's stronger and much more intelligent than the pets because it's supposed to be a protector for someone Olgierd knows should be the more important to him than anything in the world. (That she isn't anymore doesn't matter)
The vessel constrains the Demon bound to it. The cat and dog aren't disfigured, their form even enhances the more empathic task they have. So Olgierd (but much more likely O'Dimm, working through Olgierd) should have been perfectly able to bind the Demon to a bear or something. The mangled and put together nature of the Caretaker's body suggests that it is constructed to limit it to it's tasks. Locked in the body, screaming, is a highly intelligent being that perceives the world through intentionally dulled and broken senses.
Don't tell me that isn't much more in character for at least O'Dimm.

For the Cat and the Dog and the Caretaker I think that is more their summoning conditions, or what's staded in thair contract with Olgeard
(Demons end even Fairys like contracs, because hour human morality is alien to them)
I've never thought of his body beaing made for him by Olgeard, but that does make sance! Maybe the Cat and the Dog are also binded in an actual black cat and dog?
