Triss is a lot less mature but Yen is a lot more distant and abrasive those are pretty much my cons for them I like both but lean towards Triss a little more just because her personality is a lot more warm and calm.

Thats cause Triss is feminin, and Yen a modern "boss bitch" with attitudes from borderline, narcism and sociopathic behaviour ... an absolute red flag for any releationship, I mean she even keeps complaining within a sex act xD Like I mentioned in another comment, there is a song line from "in this moment" its: "I push you into the darkness, just to pull you into the light, thats basicly what Yen is doin all the time to form a co-dependancy by emotional up and downs. Within the netflix show she gets told "to release her inner rage" she collected within there traumas over the years and that this would be her "power" yeah sure, a furious emotional outburst of a female psychopath xD no but thanks no, I go for triss every time, and stay MILES away from "crazy hot chicks" since my last ex was exactly like Yen, even her look was quite similar, but hell no, never ever again xD

The moment of clarity for me was when keira says "Well, you believe Yennefer will stop treating you like a dog some day - don't see me laughing.” After considering it I changed my romance to Triss. Triss is young, that is her only vice. Yen is a cold, manipulating, and I have to believe isn't faithful due to the fact she rarely has a reaction to Geralt being with other women. Yen just likes the D imo, not much more to it, Triss actually loves Geralt.

@@MrAnderson5157 I like playing the game on what Geralt would like so yen all the way, she's the love of his life. If i played personally tho, i'm a sucker for Yen. Her cherishing and protecting the things she loves and lets nothing gets in between is what i love, and she's very strong, smart and confident. And on why not Triss is because she took advantage of Geralt when he had memory loss and didn't mention triss or ciri even though she knew both of them really well and Geralt never shown romantic interest to her, just the same how he behaves to his other friends w benefits. Theres even a mention of Triss using magic on Geralt to make him want her which is straight up creepy. She seems too obsessed. Yen could be very mean sometimes but she's at least honest. When she doesn't wanna mention something, she simply doesn't instead of lying. Works for her because she's reliable.

    • @MrAnderson5157
      @MrAnderson5157 Год назад +15

@@yoobeepedmeinthebeep If you get to know and understand yen you learn not to take her attitudes personal. She's been through a lot. When Geralt commits so does she. Triss is young and flighty. In my opinion she only wants G because he was her first love. She's more about the idea than the person. Yen is the exact opposite. I think they were written as opposite love interests that way.
Yen loves G but dislikes the idea. A lot of that can be contributed to her feeling like she has to love him thx to the wish. They resolve that latter and become perfect for each other. Yen is also more attractive spells or not. Triss plays out like a girl with daddy issues.

I am playing Fallout 3 and Witcher 3 now. GoG now has Fallout 3 in a DRM free version. If you buy Iobit's Driver's Booster 8, it will update a lot of your gaming programs and one of them is most of the Net Framework programs. It will offer you almost all of them from the start including Net Framework 2.5. You will need this for FO3. You can't play Modern Warfare 4 Call of Duty because its two years older than FO3, but Activision is coming out with MW4 CoD this week in 1080P, and it will play on the latest version of Windows 10. I don't know what they'll charge, but that game was one of their best. And yes in the immortal words of the narrator in FO3, "War, war never changes."

“Yenefer’s” never have any respect for you from the beginning and you can never earn a woman’s respect. Either she perceived you were worthy of it in the first 30 seconds or not. You’re locked in at that rate in her mind forever.

I think, generally, Yennefer acts the way she does because she felt unwanted as a child. Definitely agree with the part of her wanting to be a mother for herself and to prove something, but even the cheating (and everything else lmao) can probably be linked to her childhood. It's difficult to explain, especially to someone who might not have experienced it themselves, but it's "easier" in a way to hurt people before they can hurt you. Instead of letting Geralt (or Istredd, honestly) figure her faults out for themselves, she just creates a bigger problem. Instead of "my parents didn't want me because I'm clingy and I'm scared Geralt will realize I AM clingy and leave" (or whatever), it's "Geralt will leave, I might as well do whatever I want". And hey, I might be wrong, but that's sort of what I got from her character. I might be projecting, though, lmao

I go for Triss. I prefer a flirtatious, fun, and inteligent woman that stays loyal as much as possible and that genuinely seems to enjoy my company, rather than a bossy and holier-than-thou woman that bails as soon as she feels a bit bored or disagree with minimal things.
I have the full book collection (from The Last Wish to Season of Storms), and the 3 main games. I admit i started by the games (got Witcher 2 for free trough Games with Gold back on the Xbox 360 era), and when i jumped to the books i got excited to learn about Yennefer. Her demeanour on their first meeting was a surprise, she had a rather rude demeanour. But i would think she would soften up and improve for her lover's sake.
Did not happen. She got more controling, and would bail on him and avoid him often when either they got upset or he did things against her will. Honestly, i feel his third wish to the djinn (that their fates be tied together) was more of a curse than a blessing. He can't free himself of desiring her because of it, and she can't compromise when they are together (as short as it be). So they clash. Yet, they got tied by faith. So they are nearly forced to cross paths always.
Triss is a teenager, compared to Yennefer, and Geralt treats her for some time as a lover in Kaer Morhen during the first months of Ciri's training. Yet as soon as Yen's presence or hints appear, Geralt moves his gaze to search Yen again, as if is under a spell.
The fact the games make him suffer of amnesia, gives him a blank slate for many things. Of course, he feels the yank of the fate pulling him towards Yen, and do start to remember their relationship in time. Yet by the third game, and as he spends more time with Yen, it feels that is more like a pleasant memory to him than his true love. Ofc, that depends from the player choices. But, for some reason, by then a relationship with Triss feels more fun, more loving and honest. Triss grows and gets more interesting game-by-game, whereas Yennefer barely changes. Is just repeat the cycle again, and again.

But I am perfectly fine with that, so many games am I just this random dude that somehow got into this situation.
Its refreshing to play as someone else, where you feel like you're guiding Geralt not playing as him.
All in all The Witcher 3 is just a masterpiece in storytelling, the only other characters I play as whom I genuinely care about are Kratos, MasterChief, Bruce Wayne(Batman), and Peter Parker(Spiderman).

@@imixupwords5340 I don't want to assume things that weren't said and put words in someone's mouth, so I'm just going leave my thoughts. Some people are convinced that Geralt of Rivia would never pick Triss. That the REAL Geralt would only have 1 choice. That's an entirely false premise that's since mushroomed - which this video actually debunks. Those people seem to think because they read the books, they know what Geralt's going to do in THIS game - but this game isn't a sequel to the books. It's a sequel to the first two games, which are sequels to the books. Geralt's choice has to take into account both the books AND the past games - and by W3, either choice will make sense from his perspective.
Geralt's lived a whole new life since he woke up in W1. He's not just picking up from where he left off in the books. He's looking back on the books - and his relationship with Yennefer - as the past. He remembers just how turbulent and toxic (not just my words) it all was and he has a new perspective that he didn't have in the books. Since then, he has rediscovered who he is as a person and rebuilt himself from 0. He's also had a very deep relationship with Triss that, as we've seen, has made him happy - though it was also very flawed and complicated. Now, he (GERALT) has a decision to make. He can choose to go back to Yennefer despite it all because she makes him happy OR he can choose to break the cycle and try to move on to the new life he's created (which has also made him happy). EITHER choice is valid from Geralt's perspective because they both take into account everything that's happened. Not one or the other.
Either choice is conceivable (even if you have a preference) and either choice is made through Geralt's eyes. Not the players'. That's one of the reasons W3 is a great game (and a great RPG). It's a story that's taken both the book continuity and it's own continuity into account when presenting this decision.

Way too late with this comment, not certain why it was recommended to me, but; have read the books 3 times. Yen all the way. She's a flawed character through and through, so is Geralt (to a lesser extent), but she's the one for him. In my view, when you're saying "Triss vs Yennefer" you're choosing for Geralt, you're not choosing either for yourself. This makes Yen a no-brainer as far as I can see, even with the 'drawbacks' you mention. They both pull each other in different directions, because they are flawed in their own way. This causes tension and seeming 'unhappiness'/bickering, which is quite well depicted in the third game. That's not necessarily toxic or an unhealthy relationship. Also, good luck being in a relationship where there's 0 conflict, friction, and you're happy all the time.
Also, also, the "roasting" of Geralt in written form at 21:00 is kind of disingenuous to show viewers in a vacuum. I'm thinking it was an error on your part. Geralt sent a letter to Yen, and because he's an unsuave moron, addressed himself (or her - can't fully remember) as her 'Dear Friend' (most likely because he does not want to put pressure on her, romantically). Because Yen loves Geralt (and vice versa), she takes significant offence to being categorised as Geralt's friend, which is why she roasts him in her response. Geralt is the one who misstepped here, and her response isn't as 'unprovoked' as you kind of make it seem in the video. It's the letter of a woman scorned, and she is quite the scornful type.

And you're right. Thing with this "issue" comes tied to the fact that many take the Triss path, because they only played the 3rd game or played it first, so in their minds, Triss is a "warmer" character oposed to the "bossy" and harsher Yenn😒...not knowing that Triss 3rd game sweetness, is a mix of fixation with remorse for Geralt, after everything that happen quite recently, since the events of TW1-2. And Geralt aknowledge all of that: In the scene with Menge, if you go all the way with Triss torture plan, Geralt's had the option to respond, from his guts must add, on why he handed over the sorcerer, j7st recounting how he felt betrayed/used by Triss and the lodge first, in TW2🤷‍♂️😒

Triss lied to Geralt in Witcher 1 and 2 about being his Girlfriend and in Witcher 3 acted all drunk in the vegelbund estate to kiss him, but sobered up the moment the barones son arrived. She acts all nice, but manipulates Geralt out of insecurity. She is actually very immature and her sweet act is also that, an act to win Geralt back. It will probably get less when she feels
her relationchip with geralt is secured.
You don't get into an argument with Yen if you prioritize Ciri like her and don't ask stupid questions, despite the game laying these traps in your way. Actually there are dialog options where Geralt critiques her and she agrees that she is wrong, namely when she questions the traumatized skellige woman about the wild hunt. Probably other similiar things. But it is understandable that she is less patient, her daughter is hunted by the wild hund and no one knows how close they are to get her. Unlike all the helpless people begging Geralt to save their loved ones, she is capable to help reaching the goal and has no patience for unnecesary diversions. She actually expects Geralt to be as urgent as her, since he is Ciris father.

And Triss also looses her cool when resqueing the mages. Geralt needs to calm her down and to focus when searching for an escape in the sewers. She definetly is not used to so much pressure as she has a lot of self doubt through the game. When you romanze Triss you also see a vision where she wants to live with Geralt and is so afraid that he would reject this idea. So afraid that she kept it secret from him and freaked out once Geralt saw it. Somehow she is not calm if you think about it... but she is sweet, you wanna snuggle her! Thats why I liked Triss in the past.
In the end Geralt needs to act as the strong shoulder for Triss, but of course gets a lot of love and admiration back. But she still needs to learn to not be lead by fear of loosing something and then use manipulation on the people she loves to not feel rejection. That is very selfish and taints her charakter.
Yen has her own problems. Like her damn trust issues and unwillingnes to explain her plans to anyone as well as her snarkines when she feels you waste her time. But if she feels that you know and understand her, she accepts critizism from Geralt. And unlike Triss, Yen is independent and can get her own shit done on her own. And she is direct in her critizism, coated in a lot of irony. Also unlike Triss you know at all times when she is holding her cards open or not. This certainty in her charakter can be calming to, although her charakter is a demanding one.

The answer for me is obvious: Shani. Shani is smart, brave, and isn't motivated by anything other than a desire to use her skills as a medic to make a difference in people's lives. She never manipulates Geralt, never lies to him to get what she wants out of him, she isn't possessive, she doesn't belittle him constantly, she trusts Geralt enough to let him make his own decisions, and in general their relationship just seems far healthier and less toxic that his relationships with Yenn *or* Triss

In the books she rarely lies to him, protects Ciri with her life and gets tortured to reveal the position of Citi, while Geralt fucks Fringilla. Why is there no discussion about HOW the Last Wish affects Geralt and Yen's relationship. I think the whole push and pull thing of their relationship is intentionally vague about whether they truly love each other or if it is just the Djinn. There's an entire quest about breaking the Djinn's magic to see what remains and its even a line in Wolven Storm, a song ABOUT their relationship and I feel like that wasn't at all discussed here...

      @YuubiTimberwolf Год назад +5

The Djinns binding is such a big thing, they can't go out of eachothers lives, they are bound and it brings the worst of both out at times
Including extreme insecurity, they both don't know if thier feelings are true and with Yen's history, that build up to abusive behavior

    • @toxicwaste159
      @toxicwaste159 Год назад +8

Well that is a big thing in the games but I assume its not really mentioned here because it actually playing such a massive role is sort of a game invention. Like its left vague in the books what the wish actually was but neither Geralt nor Yennefer even mention it again after this story, nor are any thoughts about it described in the books and if it really was that important to their relationship wouldnt someone bring it up at some point? But no, as far as the books are concerned their push-and-pull relationship is simply a result of who Geralt and Yennefer are, that is two psychologically damaged people, specifically in the relationship department since they were both rejected/abandoned by their parents and despite living to what would be advanced age for ordinary humans seem to have never really loved anyone, at least not romantically.
Really, it shouldnt surprise anyone that the result is a toxic dumpsterfire, at least until Ciri enters the picture and inadvertently forces both to get themselves in order and also brings them back together, again.

  • @Samdaman747

I think Yen and Geralt both lack relationship experience, despite being older, and this serves as the root of many of their struggles. Neither has had anything remotely steady with Geralt on the Path constantly and Yen refusing to allow herself to be ensnared by anyone for too long. It's not surprising that with their other baggage in addition to it being both their first true attempts at a lasting romance, that they run into issues and struggles. Geralt chafes at idleness while Yen battles her fear of commitment.
As far as I can remember, Geralt never actively cheats on Yen as most of his relationships occur before he met her or when they had split up once more. The Fringilla chapters always read to me as if there was some sort of magical aphrodisiac in the air of Toussaint, especially since Fringilla had been tasked with delaying him as long as possible. I also can't remember if he knew Yen was alive or not at that point and whether he still thought her a traitor, not that that stopped him from moaning her name whilst banging Fringilla, so make of that what you will.
In the end, they're two damaged and traumatized people who slowly but surely lower their barriers and open themselves up to the possibility of a true love. As a Witcher and Sorceress neither expected to find love, as they were outcasts, different, viewed as other than. But in the end, they have each other, someone who always comes back to them, who accepts them for who they are, flaws and mistakes included. It's not storybook because it isn't linear, it isn't pretty, but it is well earned.
Edit: I had more thoughts as I played TW3 once more.
I think it's interesting that Yennefer is written more like a male action lead than a female one. We all know the type; damaged, emotionally unavailable hardass who is soft for like two (2) other characters. Half the male main characters I can think of are like this and people love them but because she's a woman, people just say, "lol what a bitch." This misses the change she goes through over the whole series, books and games included. She's not the same person she was when she was first introduced and that's a good thing! Characters are supposed to evolve, otherwise stories are flat. She does soften over time, and yes it's totally fine that it's only for a very select group of people, that's still a big change for her. She doesn't need to be lovey-dovey on everyone because that would feel disjointed from the character we know. She is still Yennefer, after all, a ruthlessly pragmatic person who's lived a very long and cold life. As for their ending, I thought it was very believable and real. Both Geralt and Yen were ready to settle down before the coup at Thanedd threw them across the Continent. Then they were ready again at the end of TLotL before the riot that killed them both. I guess people skim over the fact that Yen was going to kill herself (did actually kill herself? it's a little unclear) trying to revive Geralt before Ciri took them away, but it's important and it happened. Yes, she doesn't play well with others. That's fine, it's called a character flaw and it makes her more interesting. It would be boring as hell if she was a super strong sorceress who loved Geralt unfailingly and fell all over herself to please him and everyone around her and was sunshine and rainbows all the time.
Now, Geralt. I wish, just once during TW3, when a character trashed Yen and called him a bitch on a leash, essentially, that he responded with, "I trust her with my life and more importantly, with Ciri's. If she says something needs to be done or is imperative, than I believe her. She's not given to practical jokes or flights of fancy, and certainly wouldn't indulge now." Nearly every time she gives you an order, there is a dialogue option to question her if you wish, but after decades of interacting, I think Geralt knows when it's necessary to question her and when it isn't. He knows she loves him, at least once he got his memory back (*ahem* triss *ahem*), and so he isn't put off by her brusque manner, in fact, it seems to amuse him more than anything else.
I wonder what Sapkowski was really trying to achieve with their relationship. Maybe, it's simply that sometimes loving someone isn't enough if circumstances don't match up, as we see them bounce off one another for decades before their lives finally align in a way that allows them to commit fully.

Sapkowski explained he made Yen for Geralt to grow as a character, and to give the basic male fantasy reader a female protagonist not conform to their every desires and cliché expectations.
"Ha! That's what makes the story interesting, don't you think? Being a huge fantasy reader, sometimes I find boring or disgusting the stories where the hero can have sex with any woman, because those women can't wait to have sex with him. In those stories women are the hero's prize, the warrior's reward, and as such they have nothing to say, they can only moan and faint in the hero's strong arms.
I am convinced that only with contact with the other sex - wether it is cause of attraction, care, confrontation or opposition - a hero can fully grow. When I created Yennefer's character I wanted Geralt to fully grow, but then I decided to make things complicated. I created a female character who refuses to be a fantasy stereotype. To please the reader."

Yes. Yen and Geralt both grow and change as characters because of their love for each other. In the last wish you see how they finally open up to each other that their love is real and nearing the end of the game they talk about finally settling down and growing old together.
This is showcased in the blood and wine expansion when yen completely leaves the sorceresses life behind to live with geralt and spend their life together where triss said that she will visit him.

My interpretation of why Yennifer is the way she is, is because she's always expecting people to not like her. She thinks, if people aren't going to like her anyway, she might as well get the upper hand. So she acts like a b*tch first so people have a reason to not like her instead of trying to play nice and they hate her anyway. And in that way, she's won the game. She's very self defeating. She acts tough and confident and powerful and sure of herself. But inside, she carries a lot of self doubt, maybe even loathing in some cases.

Explanations aren't excuses. Yennefer is awful to everyone around her that isn't Ciri, if she were a real life person people would be well within their rights to give her a very wide berth (and they absolutely would). Whatever the reason, Yennefer reacts VERY poorly to being questioned, challenged or disagreed with in any way. She is arrogant, stand-offish, rude,, inconsiderate and downright dismissive of everyone around her. She isn't that much different in the books either (she has her moments sure, but every abusive person has them). Hell, in another game you could keep her character traits exactly the same and put her in the role of the villain and she'd fit the bill just fine.

(2nd Edit: I'm so so so sorry for leaving a whole essay long comment. Don't hate me Letalis lmao.)
I've never read the books so I'll mostly be talking about the game - I think Yennefer is better from a lore/book/story perspective, but Triss is far nicer than Yen, so I personally prefer her. Triss also came off as more emotionally connected which I liked, and it suits Geralt.
The conversation he has with Ciri about love interests really solidified this for me, as he describes his relationship with Yennefer as, "fight after fight," vs if he actually chooses to be with Yen it's just, "Well yeah, obvious choice, we've always been together." (clearly not a real quote, but you get it). It kinda felt like the game was trying its hardest to push you towards her in various ways, and on my first playthrough this was really off putting (especially coming from the Witcher 2 where you get more Triss).
On another note, Yennefer just felt distant in comparison to her. Despite the connection you can feel Yen has with Geralt, you're always left with the sense that she doesn't let herself be too romantic or too close to him. This could of course be attributed to her past, but it's an awfully sad thing to subject another person to. But I also think if you're, again going by the books, Yennefer is Geralt's lover no matter what. The "maybe" Letalis describes is still there. Could she be better than her initially colder impressions, and eventually find a warmer love with Geralt? Sure, but it doesn't make her less unlikeable to me.
At the end of the day, both of them are such different people, so being on one team or the other doesn't necessarily mean anything. I don't absolutely hate Yennefer either. I actually really like her as a character, but as a love interest? It's more questionable.
1st Edit: Coming back to this comment a year later and I don't find Yennefer nearly as "unlikeable" anymore. I still believe the toxicity of her and Geralt's relationship from the past is never properly addressed or reconciled (so ofc it still kinda bothers me). Similarly to how the Triss/Geralt's amnesia situation isn't properly addressed or reconciled either.
However, I understand why Yennefer is the way she is. More importantly, the fact that Geralt is ultimately unbothered by this. He knows that behind her cold exterior she is a genuine and loving person. He also knows it's hard for her to let her walls down - The conversation they have about trust at Kaer Mohren stuck with me, "I'm more worried you don't trust me." It *is* tortured logic (as Geralt would put it) to hide information in hopes of gaining trust. Even so he lets it slide for her sake because he knows she never keeps secrets for malicious reasons.
I'll end this similarly to how I ended my original take: Triss and Yennefer are different people. Who you like more has to do with how much leeway (benefit of the doubt) you're willing to give each of them. Barring that, it's honest to god a simple matter of preference. In my mind, there are completely valid reasons for romancing one over the other, either way.
It's why this discussion is so interesting, we could talk about it forever - CDPR has created one of the most heatedly debated choices in gaming history. Utter chaos. Peak insanity. 😭😭

Yen is a red flag, she is the definition of a modern "boss bitch" with all signs of borderline, narcism and sozipathic behaviour. She isnt just "distant" ! Its what forms the "co-dependancy" to keep Geralt chasing her, its pretty funny that they use the "Djinn" as the source for that "co dependancy bond" cause basicly its her inner darkness that created this bond by all love bombing and gas ligning in a steady up and down phase, its like a drug dependancy, she keeps you on distance (push into the darkness) right as long before you try to end this shit, and then she comes closer again for a few "good moments" (pull you back to light). so yeah I got my personal Yen in real life a while ago.

I feel she still hasn’t overcome her transgressions of the past. And they were gravely serious. She is still young in comparison to Yen and Geralt. She has not seen or experienced the world like Geralt and Yen have. She has a lot to learn still, about the world and herself.
Yen.. sadistically sweet Yen. She’s a savage mage, takes what she wants, constantly questions authority for both selfish and selfless reasons, and has by far one of the greatest growths in character over the 17:22 series of the games and books. She’s always honest with Geralt. She really doesn’t sugar coat anything. She also cares as deeply for Ciri as Geralt does.
It’s all a personal choice of course. Depends on where you get your love of the franchise. As a huge lover of the books, I’ll always choose Yen in the end. Their fates are intertwined. And no one knows more about each other than these two. No one has been through more with each other than these two. And yet, when it’s all said and done, Yen is always there for Geralt. Whether she wants to be or not.
    Yen ALWAYS fights for Geralt..
GAH… there’s so much to be said about Yen 😭lol

I chose Triss. I was torn for the first....lets says 30ish hours but something struck me. There are at least 3 separate occasions where people outside of their relationship refer to Yen's behavior as 'Ordering or treating Geralt like a dog' And even if you want to discount one of those because it's Keira and 'manipulative' etc, Cerys says something similar in Skellige and shes got no reason to be biased, she doesn't have a dog in the fight.
That was what told me that, whatever the history they had, Geralt and Yen are no good together in the long run. When people who have no personal stake in a relationship can see those glaring issues, there something not quite right. Even still, I tried to give her a fair chance, because 'SHES HIS TRUE LOVE' people shrieked at me but my GOD she made it impossible. Every time you question her, which, goddamn right I called her out for using Necromancy and acting like she was doing nothing wrong, she acts affronted. Like 'How DARE you have issues with how I do things'
Then she storms into Kaer Morhen, throws orders around, insults Vesimir to his face, and when Lambert calls you out for being rude you KNOW you've crossed a line. No way. I've never once romanced her, and I don't care to.
Also, and I say this strictly based off third party hersay since I've not read them myself but uh...yeah. Yen doesn't get to claim moral high ground and act 'Holier than thou' when it comes to cheating. Pot calling the kettle black there, hon.

Tbh I prefer neither, Yennefer at least laid out the clothes for Geralt and on the other hand Triss sent Geralt to get the clothes and do her chores instead like an immature person who just has a crush, Yen on the other hand is more like a wife and acts like it. Yennefer in the books double timed Istredd and Geralt and left both, to the point that these two came to the point of wanting to fight to death, Yen also kept constantly sleeping with different men. Triss also cast magic to seduce him and didn't like Yen at all in the book and did a lot of things that made me come to the conclusion that she's very immature. In the end tho, yennefer in the books did give away her life by overusing her magic to save Geralt's life, while Geralt also died by getting stabbed in the back by a pitchfork used by a peasant, Triss just watched. Overall conclusion: Triss is immature, Yen is the wife type who also cheats and is possessive too in a way in the books.
Roach is the best partner for me, the end.

Actually, I heard an expanation that went like this:
For the first half of its development, TW1 supposed to have kind of blank slate character. I say "kind of" 'cos the class (witcher) was fixed. That blank slate character would allow the player live Geralt's adventures as a new character.
Then, midst of development, someone decided to bring Geralt back and the script had to be adjusted to this. But the development studio, even it had the support of the distribution business (soon to be GOG), had limited resources and at some point needed to wrap and deliver the game.
So, TW1 end being Geralt re-living some of his own adventures (plus some new ones) with a surrogate-Ciri and surrogate Yennefer. It seems there was no re-writes for characters that didn't appeared in the game.
So I guess they ran out of time for the dialogues.

Yen longs for Geralt yet snaps at him at nearly every chance. She's possessive yet distant. She tries to control him but always leaves him alone for extended periods of time. They are ripped away from each other for years, with Yen knowing Geralt is searching for her, and when they finally meet again in the 3rd game, there's no reconciliation at all, she straight up turns him down. The only moment of privacy they get before Geralt is sent after Ciri is used by Yen to guilt trip Geralt for being with Triss after losing his memory, and being catty when he mentions his amnesia.

This is probably the most balanced look at the issue I've ever seen. Well done. I always thought of Geralt and Yen's relationship as more of a warning than something to be looked up to. Geralt basically sealed his fate to hers when he barely even knew her and all the drama and difficulties that happened after that. I almost always choose Triss in my play through cuz the mood around her is always more lighter and happier. Also maybe the fact that nobody mentioned ciri or Yen in the first 2 games was not to bring Geralt pain as they were all believed to be gone forever and it was just a matter of time his memories of what happened and how he returned would come back

It was fascinating listening to content from the books and how it shaped the characters. I'd never gotten far into the first game, and only read the first book all the way through, though I've very much enjoyed the Netflix series. And as such you had some very interesting insight about these characters.
I've long been a Triss fan. Your discussion of Triss from the books doesn't change my opinion much, though I will admit that I have *less* disdain for Yennefer now as a result. And that's because this shows me that the characters went through *character growth* over the years, and ended up maturing as a result.
Unfortunately, Yennefer's abusive nature raises far too many red flags for me to want Geralt to end up with her. It doesn't matter if he "likes" it or not. There are plenty of women who return to their abusers out of a need for security or the like in the real world to encourage it in a fantasy world, even if the abused character is an otherwise kick-ass sorcerer-warrior who faces down ancient evils for breakfast.
One thing I did find fascinating is what you said about Yennefer and Ciri's relationship and their lack of chemistry. It's fascinating, really, as while Yennefer proved not to be as bad a mother as her own mother was... she probably wasn't as good of a mother as she *could* have been. And that probably eats at her.
Maybe after the events of Witcher 3, in learning that you don't go fucking around with wishes because sometimes the magic will die, she'll find a foundling in need of a mother... and choose to raise that child. Maybe she'll do it right this time. Hell, she's got time to burn. She could help a lot of children over the decades and longer, learning more and more how to be a good mother and giving these children an upbringing that they lost due to the cruelties of the world in which they live. I kind of hope she does that. It would be the happy ending she truly deserves.

I think you’re not too far off with the motherhood complex with Yen, but I think it goes even deeper than that. My personal opinion is that Yennefer believes she is incapable of love, in any form. That’s why it takes her a while to get to grips with how to even relate to Ciri. It’s almost like she’s trying not to mother her and also trying to awkwardly figure out the best way to be the perfect mother.
With Geralt, I think it’s also a combination of the fact that Geralt in the books isn’t a great person either. He’s a great Witcher, a master of his trade, for sure, but he has this horrible sense of self-loathing and his usually pragmatic world-view often sours into full on cynicism. He has his own baggage, which he brings to the table alongside Yennefer’s, which results in these two deeply flawed and hurt individuals clashing, because they’re also both STUBBORN AS FUCK. Yennefer, in the words of Sapkowski himself, was the answer to Geralt’s immaturity. She might be a bitch and carry her own baggage, but in her weird, emotionally taxing way, she challenges Geralt to be a better person. There are better ways to go about it, no doubt, and I am in no way suggesting Geralt’s relationship with Yennefer in the books is healthy (they’re both very toxic to each other) but I don’t think it was meant to be.
I feel like (book) Triss would have enabled Geralt’s toxic behaviors, while (book) Yen actively challenged them. Game Triss learns to put herself first because she’s valuable as her own person and not as anyone’s lackey or second choice, and Game Yen learns to trust others and that she can love and be loved in an honest, unguarded way. Geralt learns to stop being a massive idiot.
This is a gross oversimplification, but that’s the gist of how I see it. I like how both romances offered a sort of redemption for each sorceress and serves as the completion of Geralt’s character arc.

Yen is not an obvious character in the books. A lot is in the air because the author decided so. Therefore multiple visions are perfectly possible. Myself, I see a couple hints pointing in a certain direction:
. we get to know Yen was not loved by her parents. And she suffered with it so much so that she enacted some form of revenge on them. This is very dark and its at the core of her. To me this will establish someone who severely lacks being loved and believing that someone can love them back. Yen likely does not believe she can be loved. This may or may not be interesting when it gets to Istreed.
. we know that Yen was a student of Tissaia and Yen seems to have Tissaia in a very high regard. But is there love? Motherly love? Philippa is referenced as Tissaia´s best student so....its possible Yen was not Tissaia´s most beloved one. They did get along and Tissaia became the kind of strict teacher that Yen was in need. But again, Tissaia seems to have instilled Yen into power, appearance, duty to magic, controlling the world. All this will add into Yen lacking true love in her life. She is needed by Tissaia because she has some power and because she is a good follower. Not because Tissaia really likes her.
. Then the child issue. The child issue could make sense into all this. If Yen longs for true love she may well think that she could have loved and be loved by a child. She may well think that would have been her best chance to find true love. Given her age and all that she has done around with magic, she may be more and more sure that a true child would have been her only chance of exploring true love.
. And in comes Geralt. Geralt is very Alpha. The very first time they meet Geralt gets to see her in bed and he then is obviously interested in her body during bath. Yen is disturbed by this and tells him so. How bitchy she gets may be a perfect logical consequence of her thinking that none can truly love her. She may be thinking that Geralt is only feeling lust for her body because she has been altered magically and that´s all there is to it. Notice this will then fall in line with how she is pleasantly surprised with whatever was the last wish. Yen knows what it was and she is surprised but happy with it. She seems unable to believe that Geralt may be in love with her for reasons deeper then just her looks. Notice also how she talks about the elf that loves her because of chemistry. She says that its only because of chemistry which again goes with her disbelief that anyone may love her for who she truly is.
If all the above makes sense, then her actions start to have answers. She is simply coming back and forth constantly between "he loves me", "he loves me not". Most likely she did the exact same thing with Istreed and never believed he really loved her.
Now....the trick is....Yen does fall in love for Geralt. And this is when she looses more and more control and gets even more torn apart. Because she does fall in love for him and she does honestly hurt like hell each time he sleeps around. At the end of the book she just does not want to know if he was sleeping around. She just wants to ignore it because she loves him and she has decided that´s going to be it. Its possible that she may still remain unsure if he ever loved her.
Ciri, slowly but steady becomes the very first human Yen believes to be honest in relation to her. And it confirms what she thought that a child could be the way. She slowly but steady discovers how much her link with Ciri grows and how much she enjoys and likes it. As time goes by, we see more and more of Yen going sweet and emotional with Ciri.
Sorry for the long thesis but.....Yen is complicated loool
I just think this is a good possible answer.

@@HardSkolas Nop, I used absolutely nothing from the show :) The facts I used are all in the books. The info about her parents is given when she visits a temple in Skellige to get a big jewel. She has an extra corporeal mystical experience where she reveals there is something very dark in her past regarding her parents. She clearly reveals she hated them and she came back after Aretuza to get revenge.
Everything else is pretty much from the Last Wish tale which is a book one that was adapted into the show. The book makes it much more clear what is it that Yen dislikes about Geralt at first and why she is not very pleased with their first meeting. Its much more clear why she decides to use him to go beat her enemies around. But it is also very clear she did not intend for his death because in the book she tries something to interfere with Geralts trial and release him. Because in the book he does not get free just because he blew up one guard lol There are authorities which need to be convinced and explained what the hell was going on lol
There is just a tiny bit from A Shard of Ice which is another book tale that was not adapted into the show....Istredd is in the show but book Istredd and show Istredd are not the same story. There is no hint in the books that Istredd was ever disloyal to Yen so it kind of works more in line with the problem being only Yen and something which has been at her core since very early.
Her relation with Tissaia is shown just a bit in the books and its wildly different from the show. Yen seems to be very loyal and a full believer of Tissaia in the books. For whatever reasons which are never explained, Yen is always a Tissaia supporter. She also displays certain traits which are noted to be present in Tissaia so it almost looks like Yen has Tissaia as her role model. However, it is also clear Yen is not nearly as strict as Tissaia. She does follow the same protocols but she is not someone who will go crazy if glasses are not perfectly aligned on the dining table (Tissaia famously is loool).

@Arikikami Chan exactly, she's a broken human being with loads of baggage. Yeah, she can be bitchy, that's her defence mechanism. I don't condone her every action, but it's obvious why she behaves the way she does. Sapkowski himself said he didn't create likable characters, he once outright said something along the lines that he hated Ciri for example. But he has created realistic human characters with their flaws in a world of, I'd say, realistic fantasy. That's just grand!

It's a point that I didn't feel in the game. As much as the father-daughter relationship is obvious, the mother-daughter relationship is barely sketched. And it's not Philippa that I'll trust on that since she spends her time wanting to manipulate everything

If I hadn’t read the books I could totally see myself choosing Triss over Yen in The Witcher 3…but after reading the books I absolutely could not choose her….her choices in the books made her incredibly easy to dislike to me. Yen has done her fair share of shady things to Geralt as well but Triss just seemed to me like a lovesick puppy over Geralt and when he didn’t want her she used magic to “help” get him to sleep with her and it never happened again in the books except that one time so Geralt had no feelings for Triss smh and like you said she’s very easily manipulated by her superiors and made some really crappy decisions due to pressure from the Lodge so yeah….Team Yennefer ALL THE WAY! Lol Yen felt to me like the only one that truly cared only about Ciri and Geralt in the end and would do anything for them…Triss’ loyalties weren’t in the right place to me.

I played only Witcher III and I read the books afterwards, so for me, it's either Triss or none of the two.
The Triss from Witcher IIII is kind, she cares about others, she acts like a decent human being, and she is beautiful of course (although of course Yennefer is too). It makes perfect sense for Geralt to completely fall for her.
Yennefer basically uses Geralt every way she can, never bothering to keep him in the loop, and she acts like a despicable human being with everyone except Ciri and Emhyr. I can understand why Geralt would still consider her a friend, but certainly not a love interest, at least not after the spell is broken.

Triss comes off as the second wife straight men marry after a messy divorce, younger, needier and providing a ‘need to protect’. Yen come off as the mother of Geralt’s child. A little bitter and self doubting, but her love is deeper and more mature; her love isn’t perfect.
Ultimately going off what you mentioned in the video, that love isn’t the fairytale emotion we paint it out to be, Yen is a better fit IMO. It’s not perfect but it’s real.

i got introduced to the book series through netflix and recently finished witcher 3, i must say i can never see geralt's endgame being anyone but yennefer. their history aside, their dynamic makes the most sense, they both have a snarky, dry sense of humour that i think the game plays really well on, there is natural chemistry there that i dont see with triss. i can only see geralt caring for triss in a familial way, especially since her age really shows with her childishly flirtatious demeanor (and well yknow the whole taking advantage of geralt thing). just because she is "sweet" and "nicer" to geralt doesn't mean they are the better match imo. in real life? sure, maybe it is safer to be in a relationship with her than the arguably unhealthy thing he had with yen. but this is all fictional, and the whole of geralt and yen's relationship is shown to be a growing one, ciri being the catalyst for these two to work on their weaknesses as individuals and work towards a healthier dynamic in which they can express their feelings better. the substance of geralt and yen's relationship just can't be beaten. also i hate triss' accent so much lol. and maybe because i'm a woman who IS attracted to women, i not only find yennefer hotter, but also triss as a bit of a pick me and not a girl's girl so to speak.

Actually, while first part you are right about, she was the one who "helped" her with beginning of her "women" problems(and kinda forced Witchers to give her break periodically), it was not her, who trained her. Triss tried to find out, how powerful Ciri really was(since she was able to enter "trance" and see the future), but as she tried, she wasn't strong enough "to keep up" with Ciri. She herself later admitted, that it was beyond her power to help Ciri and she suggested that Geralt should contact Yennefer. And then, Yennefer met Ciri at the temple of Melite for the first time and she trains her to use magic(Yen explained to her what are elements and how she can use it(or at least how to channel magic from water element) and she tried to teach her some telekinesis, but if i am not wrong, that wasn't exactly success).

Just a small comment: on Witcher 3 we also do a side quest wherein Yen asks the Djinn to remove the magic coupling her with Geralt. It is indicated that Djinns and genies are a bit treacherous in the way they grant wishes in the Witcher universe. So it is possible for the Djinn to remove the magic coupling, and the feelings Geralt has along with it due to its nature.
