I Should Have Just Gone To The Mechanic! | Tacoma Repair Part 1

  • The cv axles on my 2011 Tacoma needed to be replaced. Instead of paying the mechanic, I decided out of stubbornness to do the job myself. It did not go remotely according to the plan. A supposed two hour job turned into a four day nightmare. To add fuel to the fire, fixing this somehow created more problems.
    Part Numbers:
    Toyota Boot Kit: 04428-04010
    New CV Axle: 43430-04071
    Reman CV Axle: 43430-04070-84
    CVJ Axles: www.cvjreman.c...
    RCV Axles: www.rcvperform...
    Tools Needed:
    1. Floor Jack and Jack Stands
    2. Wooden blocks just in case
    3. Drain pan
    4. Impact wrench
    5. Flathead screwdrivers
    6. Rubber mallet, assorted hammers
    7. 35mm impact socket
    8. 6mm Allen key
    9. 12mm, 17mm, 19mm sockets
    10. Torque wrench capable of 173 ft lb
    11. Tie rod separator
    12. Ratchet strap or bungee cord
    13. Eye and Ear protection
    Steps:
    1. Remove wheels
    2. Remove axle dust cap with flathead screwdriver
    3. Straighten and remove axle cotter pin with pliers, retain for reinstallation
    4. Remove lock cap
    5. Remove axle nut with 35mm socket
    6. Remove tie rod end sub-assembly, remove cotter pin on top, the remove top nut with 19mm socket
    7. Remove tie rod with ball joint separator
    8. Remove stabilizer link with 6mm allen key and 17mm wrench
    9. Remove brake/ABS cable bracket nut with 12mm socket
    10. Remove 2 knuckle bolts with 19mm socket
    11. Tap end of axle with hammer to loosen
    12. Support hub assembly with ratchet strap and something underneath
    13. Remove hub from axle and carefully set aside
    14. Place drain pan under axle to catch gear oil
    15. Remove inner axle by rotating and/or hammering with flathead screwdriver
    16. Remove axle
    17. Grease c ring on inner end of new axle, position opening of c ring at 12 o’clock for easier installation
    18. Install axle
    19. Slide hub over outer axle and install
    20. Install axle nut, tighten by hand
    21. Install 2 knuckle bolts, use jack under lower control arm to align if needed,
    22. Install tie rod, clean threads before installation, torque to 67 ft-lb. Don’t forget the cotter pin
    23. Torque knuckle nuts to 118 ft-lb
    24. Install stabilizer link with 17mm socket, torque to 52 ft-lb
    25. Torque axle nut to 175 ft-lb
    26. Install axle locking cap, cotter pin, and dust cover
    27. Install wheels, torque lug nuts to 83 ft-lb

    Just replaced cv axles on 2009 sienna. Toyota could not source the driver’s side axle, so I had to get it rebuilt by company below. The passenger side OEM unit was sourceable. The Car Nut technician provides the best info on Toyota repairs and maintenance.

      Turns out I have to replace both wheel bearings/hubs, all the seals, along with the inner and outer tie rods. Basically rebuilding the front end at this point! More videos coming soon!

      @@iamalexsun I don't have this exact vehicle but I already learned a lot from your experience - gives me confidence to tackle a similar job - looking forward to it. Sounds pricey 😱 but worth it!

    I wanted to do it myself until I saw a few videos on YT on how to replace both sides and said F all of that! I just paid my local mom and pop mechanic shop to do it...ahahahaha

    have your tried doing a wheel bearing tire test? test to see if your wheels have play, it could be worn out wheel bearings

      Yup, turns out both my wheel bearings are shot. Going to be replacing them in the next video!

      Not much more expensive money wise. But very costly in terms of time.

    Perhaps it's best to replace cotter pins instead of reusing

      I replaced the cotter pins after making this video. Still diagnosing the other issues.
