I tried the cable method, and I found it easier to just add another set of jack stands under for safety and then take a long flat edge screw driver with a 3 pound hammer and Tap the CV out from under the vehicle on the slotted edges on the CV. Worked well to get it back in as well. Just tap, tap tap and spin the CV a little and Tap some more to overcome the Clip on the axle. I would also replace the seal while you are in there, but this taco was brand new so maybe not needed for this job.
Dude. I just wanted to say thank you so much and you’re a genius, I couldn’t find a slide, hammer or CV attachment in the stores I had locally, but I could find steel rope a dead blow, and some connectors created one of those styles slide hammer is that you did, and it worked great. Would not have gotten it without you. Thank you.
I have a 2015 tacoma 4wd, i had lifted the front 1 3/4'' in front with bilstein shocks and noticed a roaring noise coming from front diff. Replaced needle bearing with bushing from ECGS and it solved the problem. Also front end would shimmy around 55 mph. Solved that problem also. Definately worth it and did it myself.
was the noise constant or kinda on and off
This is by far the most informative kick arse video ive seen. It really makes this not seem so daunting. I really appreciate this knowledge brother
Thanks Rick!
A year or so late but it all started with a suspension update and well here I am, Thanks guys yall made it so much easier to pull the trigger and get'r done.
Thanks 😊
I actually took a day off and drove from Northern Virginia to NC to have ECGS actually perform the change with their bushing. Great folks, cost me less than $350 to have them perform that, including bushing, and made sure my rear axle was within spec. 3 degree shim added. Would highly recommend them if able to make the drive. Most professional company. I have 2018 Tacoma with 3 inch OME lift
That is my Truck in the video. I also did the OME lift and 3 degree shims. Rides great. Zero vibes.
The punch in the brake rotor... I was missing that idea. Thanks for that.
Or you could also put the wheel back on and lower it to the ground and tighten it that way too.
Best upgrade ever solved the issue perfectly
Glad to hear it.
Great info and detail.I've got a 19 trd sport with a 1" lift and I believe this is the problem it has steering wheel shake at 40 mph.Had alignment checked and rotated tires and still shake. So I will check cv next. Thanks guys.
Had to do the same on my 4WD Tacoma. I took it to 4 wheel parts to have a 3" lift installed. Afterwards I had the famous intermittent vibration. They knew about it but didn't know how to fix it. After extensive research and watching this video I replaced the driver side needle bearing with the ECGS bushing. You would've thought that a big company like 4 wheel parts would've had the wherewithal to figure it out. Unfortunately not 🤦
just another crappy hacked slopshop?
Used to work for 4WP as a technician... Do not go to 4WP 😂
This is one of the best bushing replacement videos I’ve seen. I really like the cable slide hammer idea. Nice work.
Thanks for watching David!
David Buckles I agree!
Thx for details and tools needed list! Awesome vid

What’s the recommendation on gear oil ? I will replace while doing this anyway
That ECGS bushing was the best modification I have done my truck feels smooth and silent. I had been chasing a noise and vibration after a leveling of about 2 inches and now it's so much better 👍
Did you have any steering wheel shake at 45-60mph.
My small vibration is after 65mph but kind of subtle and goes away not sure if it’s even the needle bearing

Thanks for the info guys great job,
Just wanted to provide an update tried here what was suggested for the sting wheel vibrations and even though the work was not as easy as in this video. It did correct the problem and I appreciate you for sharing your video
Realy like that steal cable and hammer idea.
Just did my bushing couple weeks ago, had some problems to pull the shaft out .

Thanks for this video, super helpful. I'm going to have to do this to my 17 4 Runner as ot has the same issue.
Now that y'all got some practice in we can get mine done sometime!
I just got an alignment on my newly lifted truck and was suggested to do this next. Wish I did it all at once lol. And axle shims next too maybe
I had the low grinding intermittent growl pretty much immediately after lifting my 2nd Gen. looks like I’m ordering some of these.
Nice video! I'd like to see more of this kind. Awesome bro!
Very Well done!!!!
Great video! Also have a 3 in lift and had to do this. Fixed it instantly! Found some one on Tacoma World in my area gave him $100 and did the exact same process.

Its a ball bearing on the passenger side
Great video and good information for those that may need it. I hope I never do!! lol🤣😅
Come over Saturday with your tools. I'll provide the beer and BBQ. I have a 2006 Sequoia bone stock needs this 186,000 miles. My 2006 Tundra 156,000 miles is probably not far behind. I bought the ECGS sleeve and tool since I will probably being doing it again on the Tundra. My trucks are the same as your Tacomas but I have V8's LOL.
I have some vibrations after a 3” suspension lift and -18 33” tires. Vibration is between 45-65mph. Chances are this isn’t my fix but it won’t hurt. Panning on keeping the truck as long as possible. 2021, 26k miles and paid off.

You don't have like puller for the CV? With as often as the front has to come apart it's worth the 40-60€ investment. Also, prying on that part of the CV can bend the dust shield that interfaces with the oil seal.
Just watched the video and very detail instructions also is this only recommend to do the driver side whatabout the driver side?
Yes this is only needed on the driver side.
I have to do mine. It's bad with the new suspension setup
does the truck need aligned after this install?? Great video!! Im doing this next week and wasnt sure if ill need an alignment after.
No alignment needed if you aren't adjusting anything on the UCAs or tie rod. The tie rod is disconnected during the install but that's all.
I aligned my truck the day after we shot this video, but that was due to the lift kit, not the bushing install.
Put a 2inch lift on my Tacoma and immediately had the vibration. Just changed out the needle bearing, without pullin the axle from the hub, and replaced the bearing with ecgs. Vibrations gone!
Does this issue pertain to the 1st gen Tundra or does it use a different bearing?
I'm getting ready to lift my truck. I'm doing the bushing ahead of time
Good move! Even though the don't sometimes vibrate after lifting at first ... it will eventually be an issue.
I've got a 2020 4Runner ORP with a 3 ish inch lift with aftermarket UCA's with 17K miles on the truck. Did the lift about 12k miles ago and just last week started to get a strange oscillating/harmonic like hum and mild vibration most noticeable at 40-50 mph on smooth pavement. It comes and goes in a reoccurring cycle. No wheel shimmy or shake, but noticeable through the steering column, floorboard, and seat of my pants. I'm thinking this needle bearing issue may be the culprit. Time to do some deeper investigating and get this ECGS busing swap done if need be.
Just bought a 2017 Tacoma Sport last month, factory certified pre owned. People kept commenting that my truck looked higher up, so I took a look and to my surprise the previous owner must have put a spacer/leveling kit on it, maybe 2” in the front and 1” rear. Anyways, I just recently started noticing this weird oscillating groaning vibration coming through the wheel and the floor. It’s subtle, so I’m sure it was there the whole time, just took me a while to notice it. After reading about needle bearings, etc. I tried putting it into 4H to see if it went away and it does.
Will removing the lift kit spacers and returning the truck to stock fix the vibration? I’ve read some on the Tacoma forum where removing the lift corrected the issue. I don’t even want a lift on my truck, prefer it stock.
I’m going to call the dealer where I purchased it today. They did not disclose that the truck was lifted (perhaps they didn’t know) because I probably wouldn’t have bought it had I known. Perhaps I can make a case for returning it. I’ve had it less than a month. I just don’t want to get in a drawn out song and dance with the service dept trying to diagnose and fix the issue. This is my work truck, I just need a truck that works.
Removing the lift should help correct, if not outright eliminate, those vibes associated with the needle bearing.
Would you recommend doing the needle bearing the same time as the lift? I'm thinking about 5100 all around, ome 888 coils up front, and an aal in the back, with a diff drop.
Either then or when you are changing your front diff oil.
great vid now if it only took 20 min to do this it be great lol
What gear oil did you use to top off the truck? Do you remember if it was the OEM Toyota 75w85? My local autozone only carries 75W90.
I just use the Valvoline 75w90 seen here: amzn.to/3iNVPE4
My have a vibration between 60 and 70 over 70 vibrations goes away I think to remplace a the u joint to see if that is the problem
A few things:
1. My extractor tool nut size was 19 not 22mm
2. The tie rod puller, 35 mm socket, 250lb torque wrench can be rented from AutoZone (Advance Auto has wrench and tie rod kit but way more expensive as you have to rent a whole kit).
So this is the procedure for the driver's side only, as the passenger side is different?
One more question. On my 2008 Toyota tacoma sport, my first lift kit was 3 inches in the front and 2 inches in the rear. Then I purchased an ARB winch bumper. Then I put blisten 5100 adjustable struts to 4 inch front and 3 inch in the rear. Now I've noticed that the front differential needs to be adjusted lower. The spacer that's in there now is for a 3 inch lift. Can you recommend a company that sells a front differential spacer kit for a 4 inch lift ? Thank for your time.
All of the diff drops I've seen were for a standard 3" lift.
If the differential has a spacer to accommodate the lift height is lifting still an potential problem for the needle bearing................?
Hello. I would like to know where you purchased your TACOMAHOLIC emblems on your truck?
Thank you for your time.
Hey Kevin! Checkout the Tacomaholic decals here: tacomaholics.com/shop
Our 2012 Tacoma with less then 60k miles did a weird growling vibration a few months ago and I took it to a shop to have them find it and or fix it. And they couldn’t find anything wrong so I’m still driving it but I feel something sometimes and I’m thinking this may be what it is.
Couldn't find anything wrong ???
Would this also be effective in fixing the common 4Runner Tacoma highway steering wheel vibration on stock vehicles? (Assuming all other causes have been eliminated like wheel balance).
Hmm not sure about that one. Have you checked on the 4Runner forums?
I was going to lift my tacoma but after seeing this i know the cycle won't end here
Lol it NEVER ends.
@@Tacomaholic This is a year later, I lifted my Tacoma and I will be doing this. LOL
So i just got my 2020 Tacoma OR... I want to lift it but i was worried about issues brought by lifting. Other than this bushing, are there any other issues that may arise? Also, the edits in this video are hilarious.
Trimming issues with fitting larger tires plus other vibrations with the driveshaft being off compared to the stock geometry.
How big is that removal tool tend?, I have a few bearing pullers with the smallest one like that being 1''x 1-7/8'' just wondering if I could use the one I have rather than buying another.
I don't know the exact dimensions but it's pretty small.
Thanks for the video. Wish some more details were mentioned regarding the new bearing install. How far does the new bearing have to go into the diff? How did he first align the bearing? Etc etc.
To first align it, you just get it square with the hole, so it's nice and straight. Then once it's started you can break out the long pipe. As far as driving it in, there's a little metal ridge in there. You hit it flush with that. I recommend supplementing these instructions with the ECGS install instructions, for a complete picture with all the details and tips.
@@randallbrusher503 Thank you for showing us how to do this. I'm an old fart, shade tree mechanic who works in the drive-way like you. I have done many things to my vehicles but have been unsure about this procedure. Your clear demonstration of the bushing installation answered many questions I had. Thank you again!
Did he have a differential drop before or after doing the ECGS bushing? do you guys both recommend the Drop as well as his DIY?
There's a lot of info about diff drops on Tacomaworld, but it seems they aren't really necessary and might do more harm than good.
Hi. I checked the passenger side axel to differential and I was able to move it. Do you have the part number for the roller bearing?
The ECGS clamshell bushing only goes on the driver side.
Is this problem avoided when you install a differential drop at the same time as your level kit
I haven't heard of that ... but others have said the diff drop has its own issues.
What exactly do you feel or what should we look for to know we need to replace this in the tacoma ? I have a 2016 lifted about 3”
I go over that at the 1:40 mark.
How far in did you guys put the ECGS bushing in? I read it's suppose to be flush. But I'm having some issues to get it in all the way flush. It's sticking out maybe 1/16 of an inch (1/8" at the most). Any suggestions or advice? thanks
This one was flush if I remember correctly. Have you made sure it's clean behind the bushing and anything small isn't obstructing it?
so trying to replicate the steel rope/hammer technique I pulled my cv axle into two pieces. maybe not such a great idea
I have a 2016 Tacoma off road 4x4. I want to put a 2" lift on it. With your experience on having to swap out the bearings, do you think a 2" lift will require a bearing swap?
Hard to say because it's not guaranteed that your truck with have vibrations after installing the lift.
@@Tacomaholic ok thanks for the reply.
So you’re removing a bearing and putting a bushing in its place? I thought bushing don’t last that long compared to bearings?
Not sure in other scenarios but in this case the factory needle bearing is far weaker than the clamshell bushing. I've never heard of one of the ECGS bushings failing after install.
Ughh i needed one after like two weeks of being lifted.
Wow so quickly? I'm thinking twice about lifting now lol
@@yezkaholic lift is great. Just find someone that can do the the needle bearing.
@@RCPropaganda I read somewhere that the 2018 and up have "upgraded" bearing but looking at forums it's BS. How much did you pay for yours I'm in California most shops want $300+
@@yezkaholic i got lucky met a guy on local fourms he did it for beer. Just bought bearing puller tool then sold it after.
@@RCPropaganda that's dope, so after you replaced the vibrations went away and never came Back? Yours is a 3rd gen right?
Just purchased a 2014 with no lift and only 43K miles. My hearing isn't what it used to be so not sure what I'm listening for. But I can move the Axles up and down. I'm thinking this should be done. As a second owner on a '14 would this still be covered under the original warranty? @tacomaholic tacomaholic
I'm not sure if it's covered under warranty, but a quick way to see if you need the ECGS bushing is if you feel vibes in your truck to switch it into 4hi while going about 45 mph on a straight road, if the vibes instantly go away then you need the ECGS bushing.
I have a 2019 TRD I don’t want anything real tall and I don’t want real big tires . What size tires do you use and what is the offset or back spacing of your wheels so that it doesn’t rub
My tires are 285/75R16 which is a 33". My rims have 3.5" of backspacing and -25mm offset and they rubbed pretty bad.
Is this only a Tacoma Issue? I recently purchase a 16 Tundra SR5 and just lifted got new tired and alignment done but truck keeps vibrating around 60-65 along with my steering wheel.
I'm not sure if the Tundra's use the same/similar setup.
Also how about a Tacoma 05 after getting lift , doing a slight vibration between 0-20mph ?
Probably a driveline vibe if it wasn't there before the lift and either a carrier bearing spacer or rear axle shims might help.
Will the vibrations be constant at all speeds I just lifted my truck and I know for a fact my driveline angles are all messed up so I’m gonna order a woody, from off the line shudders to decel vibes will the needle bearing be at a specific speed?
Needle bearing vibes are usually around 35-50 mph.
1200 miles on it? What is it registered or a trailer only fun wheeler? Ive never owned amything with less than 60k.. couldnt imagine doing that much to a truck while it still had the new car smell in it...
I need to do this on my 2005 after ome lift. I 100% Expect my axel to be seized to the hub. Here’s hoping it’s not 🍺
So Iam about to order the bushing for my truck. I seen that there is play on both side. I was just wondering if you know if the bushing work for both sides or just the driver side ?
Driver side only. The passenger side has a different setup.
@@Tacomaholic Thank you do you know if it a ball bearing on that side by chance?
@@user-ni6vd2ly8y I'm not sure what the passenger side setup is, but I've never heard of it needing to be replaced.

@@user-ni6vd2ly8y Any time 👍
Mine has an on-off vibration only between 60-70km/h (38-43mph) is this the fix? Also lifted with a spacer..
The vibe goes away when you put it into 4hi?
Cool vid, but what's a vibe? vibration?
Yep, vibration.
When getting this done, is a alignment required afterwards?
No alignment needed.
I have a 2020 Tacoma TRD off rd with 2000 miles just had a 3/2 spacer lift done new rims tires 285/70/17 front end alignment. Between 50 and 60 I get little shake in starting wheel not bad but strange. The shop said drive it for two weeks bring it back and if still an issue they would rebalance the tires. Any suggestions
Pop it into 4hi next time it shakes like that if you are on a straight road and going less than 65mph. If the shake instantly goes away then you need to replace the needle bearing with the ECGS clamshell one as seen in this vid.
Did you get it fixed
Is there a passenger side bushing as well. Or do you only need to do the drivers side?
No the passenger side is different. Only driver side needed.
@@Tacomaholic so does the passenger side not have a needle bearing?
So how long can i go before changing this out? The vibration isn't to annoying yet and I can deal with it. Its not harming anything is it?
Better sooner than later since wearing that bearing out can lead to bigger problems.
Stupid Question Alert....Do you have to do the passenger side bushing as well? Or is the problem only with the needle as the passenger side is a tube bearing?
I'm not even sure if the passenger side is setup the same way as I've never seen anything done with that side.
@@Tacomaholic It isn't it has a ball bearing...which according to ECGS's FAQ page "normally does not go bad."
So shame on me for not reading first. Thank you for the quick reply!
My vibes on the passenger side so do I replace both ?
This is only for the driver side. Passenger side is setup differently. But usually vibes felt from this issue are sort of generalized and not side specific.
Haha says not to hammer the outer part of the cv axle but it’s completely fine to have it shoot out and hit pavement
I have a 2009 TRD access cab with an AT summit wedge camper on it. Suspension is stock. The camper has squished an inch or 2 of the lift. If I lift the truck just back to ~ normal do I still need to mess with the needle bearing? Thanks
I would guess that if you are lifting it back to the stock height you wouldn't have issues with the needle bearing ... but if it's off by just a little bit the issues could develop.
@@Tacomaholic
Makes sense. Any idea if it’s the opposite as in the truck is sagging from a load? Is changing the angle bad if it’s lower not raised? Thanks
@@Tacomaholic
Also. Do you know of any difference between the bushing from east coast gear and the one from nitro? I can get the nitro one locally. Thanks
@@at1970 I'm sure the part is the same between the two companies.
I have a 2015 2wd, would this be useful to replace for me? I have had shaking in the steering wheel even after balancing the tires since I lifted it. Running a spindle lift in the front and emu springs in the rear
Are your vibrations around 40-50mph?
@@Tacomaholic exactly at 50mph
@@Vikingguy187 Yeah it would be worth trying then assuming your tires are balanced.
How did he get the shock off without taking loose the upper control arm
That was done earlier since this truck was getting new UCAs at the same time.
but its not require to remove the shock to get the axle out. unless it a beefier shock i guess.
So if I replace the needle bearing on my 2008 Toyota tacoma with the clamshell bushing, should I go ahead and replace the ball-bearing on the passenger side?
Passenger side never seems to be an issue.
Thanks for getting back to me so fast. Every video I've seen so far has really helped me out with my truck.

Sounds like you got one of the good Toyota dealerships. 😀
I had to find another dealership because the one I went to previously denied everything and treated me like I was stupid 😆. There’s a TSB out for this prob that I found on Tacoma world. It’s called cyclical groaning/grinding I believe.
How can I remove the needle bearing outer housing if the puller destroyed it? All that is left is the outside shell.
