A shop here tried to charge me $2k for my carrier bearing(they said the entire driveshaft had to be replaced because the carrier bearing can’t be removed) and wheel hub bearing. Definitely will be trying to handle this myself thanks to your tutorial! Going from $2k to a couple hundred, thank you sir

One of the better videos of a carrier bearing replacement! One thing I would add is to smack the driveshaft by the u joint after installing the u joint to release the tension on the part due to pressing in the joint to the shaft. Ypu are a really good technician, keep up the great work.

Just now finished replacing bearing and U-joints on my Tacoma. My truck must be an earlier version as the tabs on the bearing do go into the cross member. The bearing that came out did not have the tabs. Regardless, this is by far the best, most detailed, step-by-step method to getting this job done. Well done and thank you!
I'm a big fan of double wrenches for extra simple leverage. You are the first mechanic I've seen employ the trick. I'm sure that more do. Thanks for the vid.
Awesome! Thanks for your descriptive and informative video. I’ll be doing this task on my son’s 08 Tacoma while he’s away on deployment 🇺🇸 Before he left, he was noticing extreme vibration at higher highway speeds. Once repaired, a test drive will be mandatory at a nearby 4x4 trail 😎

Good job, I just ordered my carrier bearing, I will be doing this next weekend. I have access to a 60 ton press but it is not at the same location. I liked the way you removed the u joint caps and the carrier bearing (controlled taps), without beating them up too much. I 'am going to try this first to save some time. Thanks, Chris
Thanks Chris! Just another tip, Although possible without a bench vice it is definitely the way to do it. Esp to get the carrier bearing itself off. Something I should have mentioned in the video was to not tighten the vice excessively on the driveshaft to avoid denting or damaging it. @@Adv4x4 A 3 jaw puller works well to get the yoke off and the bearing as well. Unfortunately, where I live in Northern Michigan, parts dont slide off with a few taps of a deadblow like they do in places that don't liberally salt the roads. ;)

Great video! I need to do this on my 2004 Tacoma, so I'm assuming it will be very similar. I was very intimidated by the u-joint removal/replacement part of this, but you did a great job explaining that, and I think I can tackle that now. One thing that may be an issue for me on the replacement carrier bearing (already en route to my house) is that part that sticks up on each side of the top. I have a carrier bearing drop (spacers) installed currently (to help w/ vibes after lifting the truck), and it looks like those "ledges" slide over that bracket that the bearing screws into. Thank you for taking the time to film this!
Hey no problem! With a 2004 Tacoma I don’t believe you have to even take apart the ujoint itself. I think it’s a double Cardan joint with a flange that unbolts giving you access to the large but you need to remove to slide the flange off and remove carrier bearing itself
@@Adv4x4 yep, I just looked, and you're absolutely right! That should make it even easier. I've had some random, violent shaking under the floorboard (no specific speeds but recently happened while on the interstate), and I'm hoping this solves the problem. There isn't a ton of play in the carrier bearing, but it can't hurt to install a new one anyway.
Just finished changing the carrier bearing on my 07 4x4 taco!! This vid pretty much did it for me, step by step so easy my 11 year old Son is doing the next one!! Thanks Brother !!

Great video. Only comment I have is when you said make sure the prongs face the rear of the vehicle and then yours were pointed to the front as you described the front of the shaft right before that statement. Was that a mistake or intentional?

You will get a slight vibration on acceleration when you take off from a light! Or you can get under the truck and you can see how much slop it has. Mine was visibly bad as well. Drive line was sagging in the bushing 👍🏼
I read in a tacoma forum that you first have to torque it to 134 ft lbs and then loosen it up and torque again to only 51 ft lbs. Is that information correct. Everything else in the videos is great very detailed. Thanks
I pulled the torque spec information from All Data which is a huge automotive database used by I’d imagine almost every auto repair shop and I just followed their instructions for that part. So it is correct to the best of my knowledge 👍🏼
Good vid. Any chance of knocking the drive shaft out of balance when ur banging on the yoke to get the U joint caps off? I used a ball joint press for the U joint, and puller for the yoke/bearing when I replaced mine, but banging them out seems easier😊.
As many of them as I’ve done like this I haven’t had any problems so I’d be willing to say you won’t have any issues! Now if you clamp the drive shaft too tight in the vice and dent it you will have vibration issues for sure. Either way works I prefer the hammer and socket method it’s fun, quick, and easy instead of messing with the press kits!

I would check your front wheel bearings. Without being there it’s hard to diagnose for you but they are very common and prevalent at speeds you mentioned 👍🏼
Thank you for posting, this helped me with my 03' Tacoma. Question...I forgot to index the drive shaft before removing. How can I tell if I reinstalled incorrect? Will the vibration be obvious? The Weights on the drive shaft are still in tact.
I bought a a rebuilt drive shaft. Man said it was balanced. So I have no preexisting marks to mount it by. The man at the drive shaft place said they were not needed. He said a driveshaft is balanced off the truck and that marking it was not required. I put it on my truck and it does not vibrate.
@@Adv4x4 - I just went under my truck and checked the carrier bearing and it’s shot. The rest of the u-joints are tight though. I also have a bit of a lift with 35’s. I wonder if I should get that drop for the CB.
Personally like to work with things on a work bench instead of under the truck, especially while I was recording this. Can’t imagine disassembling the u joint under the truck if you are doing this on the ground and not on a lift.

Ok so I did this exact repair, u joint as well, and I guess I missed my marks when putting the shaft back on?? Now when going from stopped, of I give it a little gas, the drive shaft slips! Can't find any of my marks. How do I find where to put it back? Is there another way?
Update, I did put the shaft in correctly, but apparently the bearing is bad? Ordering the more expensive OEM part. My mechanic said they always go wrong so they don't do them in house anymore and refer it to a local drive shaft place
Nice man, just curious on what issues u were experiencing with the bad carrier bearing?? I have a 2014 double cab trd with a 2.5 inch lift front iron man 4x4. Already had to do the clam shell bushing for vibration issues but now I’m having a different vibration/hesitation feeling and I am wondering if this bearing is my problem. I’m having a weird vibration at the 45 mph range. It seems to happen right before the truck downshifts but the vibration is present before and after from 40-45. Any ideas please let me know. Thank you
If it’s at a specific speed and throttle or shifting doesn’t change it unless it’s left the range where it vibrates I’d first- check the air in your tires some tires at lower pressures will give vibrations at certain speeds. Second jack up your front end and check for tie rod play. A loose inner or outer tie rod can also give you a vibe at certain speeds occasionally. if you don’t see issues with either of the above, go get your tires rebalanced. And ask the mechanic to make sure you don’t have any broken belts in your tires they should easily be able to distinguish that while balancing.

If you are doing this same job for a Tundra, there will be a washer between the bearing and the yoke. At least for a 2013 Tundra TRD with a 3 piece axle.
Great video! Dorman parts are a little questionable for me, but if it works for you, can’t argue with that. I like using OEM Toyota parts as sometimes it’s the same price as aftermarket or cheaper. To each their own.
The prongs need to be pointing to the back or just on the back side? B/c they look like they are actually pointing to the front. Not trying to be critical, just dont want to make any mistakes.
Have you done this replacement on a 2WD taco? Mine doesn’t have the bolted flange to the xfer case, it just slides in/out. I’m nervous about pulling it all the way out in case there is some “key” to it I need to be aware of. And it looks like I’ll have to at least top off trans fluid, any suggestion there? Thanks!
I have a 2005 tacoma with a 2.5in lift. I had my center bearing replaced 3 weeks ago. Well the mounting bolts broke off and now the drive shaft is hanging down..... The mechanic who did the job claims its the bind from leaf springs that caused the bolts to break.... Any idea what happened?????0. I never hit anything and I dont off road hard at all...Thanks
Hey man, im so confused. When you took that nut off for the center yoke, before removing the center support bearing. It just came right off!! Mine is just spinning, i broke it free by hand
You will not feel a vibration on start up of the truck due to a bad carrier bearing. You will feel the vibration as you begin to accelerate from a stop and then it evens out as speed increases. It’s best to replace sooner then later
@@Adv4x4 sorry, that is what I meant. starting up from 0 to about 10-15 MPH the vibration goes away and I also hear a faint squeek squeek at 1 to 5 mph. Can it cause more damage if not replaced right away? I did grease all the ujoints and the squeek did not go away. thank you!
@@onemanzone727 usually the squeak like you described would be one of the pivots on a ujoint being dry. After greasing it should have quieted down but at the same time the passage could be clogged and not letting grease get in there. To be safe Id get it replaced sooner then later. You don’t want a ujoint to fail while you are out somewhere.
I just bought a second gen and noticed a lot of vibration in the rear end so I crawled underneath and was able to move the whole drive shaft around this bearing. Would that indicate that mine needs to replaced? Please be nice this is first truck I’ve owned that doesn’t have a solid driveshaft
You will be able to move it around. Mainly to see if it’s bad check for a vibration you feel in the rear of the truck when you first accelerate from a stoplight
Yeah 6 attempts in on my universal and still no dice. This new one has so much magnetism it keeps sucking the needles right out and getting in the way inside. At any point you shift the universal in the cup it pulls them out like a string or causes to flatten inside sometimes. It even sucked them up into the center of the universal at one point. I’ve tried the grease trick to keep them in place and that didn’t work like it normally does. I’m giving up on this one and I’ll have to go buy another brand and try again or pay someone to put it in since I’ve hit my frustration limit. I’ve done universal joints before and I’ve never had this kind of problem before.
I have never dealt with them being magnetized like that either. I believe you can demagnetize things (I’d google how) and try again. That is definitely a strange thing to encounter.
@@Adv4x4 yeah that was a spicer too. I finally gave up and slung it across the garage and bought a precision brand and it didn’t have that issue. Went on much easier but i made the colossal mistake of using soap stone to make my marks. Yeah with all that fighting my marks were gone. But I expected it’ll be right off then right back on.wrong! So then because my marks were gone my yoke ended up a tooth off because it it was tight and shot off instead of slipping off. Finally got it all back together and no vibration thankfully. So yeah it’s been a interesting adventure lol.I learned my lesson not to mark critical stuff with something that rubs off.
I’ve learned plenty of lessons like that myself over the years it just makes us better at it in the end! Glad to hear you got it resolved and no vibrations 👍🏼

Never grip a tailshaft tube in a vice to hold it or you may damage it. This will cause imbalance and render the shaft unserviceable.
This is covered in the video. It was not tightened down hard at all 👌🏼
The yoke on my drive shaft won’t slide off like yours did. It seems to be seized and won’t budge no matter how many times I tap it
They can be a bit stuck at times unfortunately

Stupid question....why didn't you just use the impact to undo the four bolts at the pumpkin?

This is a terrific and very thorough video. Question: can the bearing be removed with a standard 2 fingered steering wheel puller?

I read in a tacoma forum that you first have to torque it to 134 ft lbs and then loosen it up and torque again to only 51 ft lbs. Is that information correct. Everything else in the videos is great very detailed. Thanks
I pulled the torque spec information from All Data which is a huge automotive database used by I’d imagine almost every auto repair shop and I just followed their instructions for that part. So it is correct to the best of my knowledge 👍🏼

Good vid. Any chance of knocking the drive shaft out of balance when ur banging on the yoke to get the U joint caps off? I used a ball joint press for the U joint, and puller for the yoke/bearing when I replaced mine, but banging them out seems easier😊.
As many of them as I’ve done like this I haven’t had any problems so I’d be willing to say you won’t have any issues! Now if you clamp the drive shaft too tight in the vice and dent it you will have vibration issues for sure.
Either way works I prefer the hammer and socket method it’s fun, quick, and easy instead of messing with the press kits!
I’ve heard not to use a vise, but if you’re not having issues then whatever works! Being gentle as possible is a good idea

I would check your front wheel bearings. Without being there it’s hard to diagnose for you but they are very common and prevalent at speeds you mentioned 👍🏼
Thank you for posting, this helped me with my 03' Tacoma. Question...I forgot to index the drive shaft before removing. How can I tell if I reinstalled incorrect? Will the vibration be obvious? The Weights on the drive shaft are still in tact.
Take your best guess. You may not encounter any vibrations at all! But I usually index the shaft to be safe.

I bought a a rebuilt drive shaft. Man said it was balanced. So I have no preexisting marks to mount it by. The man at the drive shaft place said they were not needed. He said a driveshaft is balanced off the truck and that marking it was not required. I put it on my truck and it does not vibrate.
The repair book I have says that it should be torqued to 134 foot pounds then loosened one full turn and then torqued to 51 foot pounds

@@Adv4x4 - I just went under my truck and checked the carrier bearing and it’s shot. The rest of the u-joints are tight though. I also have a bit of a lift with 35’s. I wonder if I should get that drop for the CB.

I'm about to replace all three U-joints and the Carrier Bearing tomorrow. Is it necessary to index the nut holding the yoke?
Any advantage to taking the whole shaft off versus just removing the rear at the slip yoke spline?
Personally like to work with things on a work bench instead of under the truck, especially while I was recording this. Can’t imagine disassembling the u joint under the truck if you are doing this on the ground and not on a lift.

Ok so I did this exact repair, u joint as well, and I guess I missed my marks when putting the shaft back on?? Now when going from stopped, of I give it a little gas, the drive shaft slips! Can't find any of my marks. How do I find where to put it back? Is there another way?
Update, I did put the shaft in correctly, but apparently the bearing is bad? Ordering the more expensive OEM part. My mechanic said they always go wrong so they don't do them in house anymore and refer it to a local drive shaft place
Nice man, just curious on what issues u were experiencing with the bad carrier bearing?? I have a 2014 double cab trd with a 2.5 inch lift front iron man 4x4. Already had to do the clam shell bushing for vibration issues but now I’m having a different vibration/hesitation feeling and I am wondering if this bearing is my problem. I’m having a weird vibration at the 45 mph range. It seems to happen right before the truck downshifts but the vibration is present before and after from 40-45. Any ideas please let me know. Thank you
If it’s at a specific speed and throttle or shifting doesn’t change it unless it’s left the range where it vibrates
I’d first- check the air in your tires some tires at lower pressures will give vibrations at certain speeds.
Second jack up your front end and check for tie rod play. A loose inner or outer tie rod can also give you a vibe at certain speeds occasionally.
if you don’t see issues with either of the above, go get your tires rebalanced. And ask the mechanic to make sure you don’t have any broken belts in your tires they should easily be able to distinguish that while balancing.

Have you had to add any spacers between the bearing housing and the frame where the part is mounted?
I personally have not but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do so.
If you are doing this same job for a Tundra, there will be a washer between the bearing and the yoke. At least for a 2013 Tundra TRD with a 3 piece axle.

Great video! Dorman parts are a little questionable for me, but if it works for you, can’t argue with that. I like using OEM Toyota parts as sometimes it’s the same price as aftermarket or cheaper. To each their own.
I’ve typically had good luck with Dorman but everyone seems to have different experiences. I do agree oem is best!

1st gen requires torque to your spec, then back off and re-torque to a lower spec (51 ft. lbs).

Have you done this replacement on a 2WD taco? Mine doesn’t have the bolted flange to the xfer case, it just slides in/out. I’m nervous about pulling it all the way out in case there is some “key” to it I need to be aware of. And it looks like I’ll have to at least top off trans fluid, any suggestion there? Thanks!
Why index, shafts should be balanced? Seems like preload would be important before tightening down too?
I personally would replace that lead u-joint every time, especially if there was slop in the carrier.
I have a 2005 tacoma with a 2.5in lift. I had my center bearing replaced 3 weeks ago. Well the mounting bolts broke off and now the drive shaft is hanging down..... The mechanic who did the job claims its the bind from leaf springs that caused the bolts to break.... Any idea what happened?????0. I never hit anything and I dont off road hard at all...Thanks

Hey man, im so confused. When you took that nut off for the center yoke, before removing the center support bearing. It just came right off!! Mine is just spinning, i broke it free by hand
Mine slide out, I heard it’s pressed in but it came out by hand.

You will not feel a vibration on start up of the truck due to a bad carrier bearing. You will feel the vibration as you begin to accelerate from a stop and then it evens out as speed increases. It’s best to replace sooner then later
@@Adv4x4 sorry, that is what I meant. starting up from 0 to about 10-15 MPH the vibration goes away and I also hear a faint squeek squeek at 1 to 5 mph. Can it cause more damage if not replaced right away? I did grease all the ujoints and the squeek did not go away. thank you!
@@onemanzone727 usually the squeak like you described would be one of the pivots on a ujoint being dry. After greasing it should have quieted down but at the same time the passage could be clogged and not letting grease get in there.
To be safe Id get it replaced sooner then later. You don’t want a ujoint to fail while you are out somewhere.

I just bought a second gen and noticed a lot of vibration in the rear end so I crawled underneath and was able to move the whole drive shaft around this bearing. Would that indicate that mine needs to replaced? Please be nice this is first truck I’ve owned that doesn’t have a solid driveshaft
You will be able to move it around. Mainly to see if it’s bad check for a vibration you feel in the rear of the truck when you first accelerate from a stoplight

Yeah 6 attempts in on my universal and still no dice. This new one has so much magnetism it keeps sucking the needles right out and getting in the way inside. At any point you shift the universal in the cup it pulls them out like a string or causes to flatten inside sometimes. It even sucked them up into the center of the universal at one point. I’ve tried the grease trick to keep them in place and that didn’t work like it normally does. I’m giving up on this one and I’ll have to go buy another brand and try again or pay someone to put it in since I’ve hit my frustration limit. I’ve done universal joints before and I’ve never had this kind of problem before.
I have never dealt with them being magnetized like that either. I believe you can demagnetize things (I’d google how) and try again. That is definitely a strange thing to encounter.
@@Adv4x4 yeah that was a spicer too. I finally gave up and slung it across the garage and bought a precision brand and it didn’t have that issue. Went on much easier but i made the colossal mistake of using soap stone to make my marks. Yeah with all that fighting my marks were gone. But I expected it’ll be right off then right back on.wrong! So then because my marks were gone my yoke ended up a tooth off because it it was tight and shot off instead of slipping off. Finally got it all back together and no vibration thankfully. So yeah it’s been a interesting adventure lol.I learned my lesson not to mark critical stuff with something that rubs off.
I’ve learned plenty of lessons like that myself over the years it just makes us better at it in the end! Glad to hear you got it resolved and no vibrations 👍🏼

Do you know the part number for that staked carrier bearing nut? Ive got to replace my CB again and want to get a new one. Cant find the number anywhere
