  • Set your resolution to 1080! Today we are removing a 2016 Toyota Tacoma CV Axle, installing an ECGS bushing rated for 500,000 miles, and reinstalling the axle. Torque specs included and we show you a surefire way to get the axle in and out of the diff!
    I removed the axle in its entirety in case I break one in the middle of nowhere I have the confidence to replace it with a spare and get home. Skip to 5:33 if all you are doing is installing the ECGS bushing.

    No body even Mechanics all said u have to remove ball joint. But after watching your video and my mechanic friend I taught him a thing and was easy. One thing I learned is if you jack your truck up just a tad higher u won’t leak oil. He was even amazed and said something so simple was funny he hadn’t thought of it. Thanks

      Plus I forgot to say the friend that’s a Mechanic that helped me his girlfriend’s father is a retired Toyota mechanic of 20 years and said you had to remove it also so I guess Toyota charges you more for that or they say they do to make more money anyway I’m grateful

    Dude... so helpful. I put a 3” ReadyLift SST Kit on my Taco and almost immediately starting feeling the vibration. I just did this on the weekend on my 2017 trd sport and followed this video exactly and it worked great! I have 80,000km on my truck and i didnt do the seal as it looked to be perfectly fine and it is still holding great after the install, not a drop of fluid is leaking out! My only recommendation, which these guys say too, is to take your time placing the needle bearing puller behind the needle bearing. If it isn't going in, take a breather for a few minutes and try again. I grew impatient and frustrated and ended up not installing it all the way and regretted it, I cracked the puller and had to weld it back together and re tap and die the threads (not my most proud moment). Don't be scared to give the puller a whack or two with a punch and hammer to get it to seat properly! Without the whole mix up of screwing up the puller tool this install would only have taken an hour by following this videos instructions. Thanks for the great video! No more vibrations
    PS using a flat head and hammer to get the CV shaft out worked awesome, took 2 minutes to remove it using that technique

      @TreadingDirtSW  4 года назад

    One trick I do to remove axle nuts is to insert a large punch into the top side of the caliper and into the cooling fins of the rotor. Save a ton of time trying to wrestle pry bars and breaker bars and potentially bending a stud.

  • @mickreese
    @mickreese 4 года назад +1

    Unbelievably excellent video!! In 2017, I purchased a 2016 Tacoma with 18,000 miles on it. We noticed an intermittent vibration almost immediately. We took it back to the Toyota Dealer and they said they couldn't hear it. It is a pulsing at about 50ish miles/hour. Unfortunately, it is weak at times, then at other times, very prominent. I recently took it back to Toyota and they replaced the back springs. Might I add that this was free of charge(54,000 now). I believe that this was due to the tech bulletin fix. Well, The vibration came back and my truck sinks down more when I put my utility trailer on. So, I received lighter springs and I still have that vibration that you can feel in the steering column and the accelerator pedal. I have an appointment, at the dealership, next Monday. I don't know what they will propose. I guess I want to know if this pulsing vibration was your experience. I am willing to tackle this fix if indeed it will resolve my issue. I think that the passenger side would have an identical Needle bearing? Again, thank you for the vid. I do absolutely love this vehicle. I am just trying to work out bugs. Thanks to all, in advance, for your answers.

    • @TreadingDirtSW
      @TreadingDirtSW  4 года назад

      Mick Reese hey thanks for the compliment! Have you tried engaging 4x4 to see if the pulsing goes away? If it does, that increases the chance it’s the needle bearing. And yes, mine was a pulse at times.
      Passenger side uses a different bearing so it’s just the driver side that typically has the problem.

      Jim Kotz I had already replaced the fluid previous to this with synthetic 75w90. The oil recommended by ECGS is mainly for when you swap gears with theirs, not when you do just the bushing.

      Treading Dirt SW my only suggestion for others is to get a torque wrench for the axle nut and do it to exactly 173 ft/lbs. The first time I did it, I didn't use a torque wrench and just hammered it on there with an air wrench. Less than 500 miles later, my wheel bearing went bad. I'm not sure if this was the cause, but it's better to be safe and do it to spec.

    • @TreadingDirtSW

    Hey Guys great video , I get a really bad steering vibration at 60-70 mph on my 2017 tacoma , tried everything from alignment to tire balancing to bearing drop with no luck. Do you think this might be the reason?. Got fox 2.5 suspension with icon upper control arms . Thanks in advance !!

      Shenal Hathurusinghe probably not, it’s more of a rumble and it usually happens at slower speed. If you can safely test it, putting it in 4x4 should make it go away if it’s the needle bearing. Have you considered axle shims?

    • @TreadingDirtSW

      James Howard impossible to say, I’d refrain from shims or cb drops until you have issues, if any. Easier to do one thing, then go from there if it’s not fixed.

      Dillon Kroll I ordered the bushing, removal tool, and axle seal. Ended up not needing the seal but wanted it on hand just in case. Not sure about part number but eastcoastgearsupply.com has really good part descriptions.

  • @southernmadeuf

    Just started the humming noise in my 4runner and researching the ecgs. Will the needle bearing ultimately fail and cause damage or is it just more of an annoying sound and vibration.

    • @TreadingDirtSW
      @TreadingDirtSW  2 года назад

      At some point you’ll run out of needle bearing and that wouldn’t be good. There is a chance it fails all at once, with material breaking apart and into the diff.
      The truth is that you probably have time, like thousands of miles. But you don’t want to just ignore it for months and months.

      Sounds about right! Mine was somewhat rhythmic and could be compared to light rumble strips.
      If it happens under 25-35mph but goes away in 4hi then it’s probably this bearing going bad.

    • @TreadingDirtSW

      P Pha actually I didn’t, the lower ball joint attachment kit was what we removed, we did not mess with the LCA bolts. I have a lifetime alignment and awhile after we did this I took it in for a check and it was still good. Your mileage may vary of course and it’s never a bad idea to take it to the alignment shop. I do it 2x a year to be safe. Tires and suspension components are expensive!

      Well, I started on it today and got the old bearing removed and new bushing installed. I’m having a little difficulty with getting the axle back in. I know I have to apply force to get it past the retention clip, but I’m afraid to hammer away without knowing the splines are lined up. Any tips?

      Jarrett Moore so tapping it in using a large flathead and large hammer didn’t work? It should go in a little further initially if they are aligned vs not.

      James Howard I did the lift by myself and forgot to measure from center hub to fender before I installed. It’s around 2” but I have a shell, steel rear bumper, sliders, and a 3/16 steel skid so I ended up with a little less. I think next time I’ll go with 888’s.
      And as a disclaimer, OME recommends only their shocks be used with their coils. I haven’t had issues yet nor has anyone in a 3rd gen group I moderate.

    • @TreadingDirtSW

      Alphalamb Allegiant never broken a stud off, I guess anything is possible though. As far as loctite changing torquespecs you’re right if we were using anti seize (reduce by around 20%) but Loctite recommends using “dry” specs.

      @TreadingDirtSW  5 лет назад

      Alex Helie sounds exactly like a needle bearing issue. A good test is to put it in 4hi while it’s giving you a vibe and see if it goes away. If it does, most likely the needle bearing.

    • @TreadingDirtSW
      @TreadingDirtSW  5 лет назад

      Alex Helie lol then I’m confused by your original question. With no needle bearing it can’t be the needle bearing. It could be the tires, brakes, drive shaft, or rear diff, rear axle, etc. I’d start with the tires personally by checking the balance and tread.
      If you are lifted it could be an issue with your pinion angle, or even an out of balance shaft. If you have a carrier bearing maybe try a drop kit, cheap and a 5 min install.

    What does the bad needle bearing feel or sound like? My trucks got five thousand miles on it and I would like to know what to look for when this happens. Is the vibration very noticeable or is it equivalent to the road feel you get through the steering wheel? Just wondering if this is something I'll need to be quiet to be able to hear or if it will be inherently obvious?

    • @TreadingDirtSW
      @TreadingDirtSW  5 лет назад

      Drake Productions it’s a low rumble at slower speeds, usually 25mph and less. sometimes it’s intermittent off and on or even a “wa wa wa wa”. Easy diagnosis is to drive when you can hear it on a straight road, put it in 4x4, if it goes away then it’s most likely the bearing.

    • @jeffc7486
      @jeffc7486 5 лет назад

      Mine is humming between 30 and 40 mph, it almost sounds like a wheel bearing but I've heard people say worse. But like he said if you put it in 4h and goes away it's probably that. The needle bearing seems to be more affected after a lift or level. 5000 miles after my level, low and behold that pesky noise.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed 5 лет назад

      What if the noise doesn't go away when you put it in 4hi? Could it still be the needle bearing? I have a grinding noise coming from the driver side front and have eliminated the cv axles. There is no slop or anything when I shake the axles either.@@TreadingDirtSW

    • @TreadingDirtSW
      @TreadingDirtSW  5 лет назад

      Bros FOURR Speed could he something wrong with the diff itself or something with the tires. Generally the noise is only present in 2wd if it’s the needle bearing, even the Toyota repair manual states this but maybe if yours is really bad it might grind at all times.

      Treading Dirt SW Hmm, thanks for the response. I'm just not sure anymore..I've had the lift on for 1,000 miles so that's not along time for any bearing to go out or anything which I why I figure it's that. Just wasn't sure if the noise was consistent what else it could be.
