    Hello! Today I have a quick video for you showing you how I germinated a bunch of cacti seedlings using a take out container, a heating mat, and my usual seed-starting light. You can adjust this method to fit your tools as needed, the key is warmth, humidity, and good light.
    Stay tuned for more seed starting videos!
    Here’s the heating mat I use in this video: amzn.to/3cauj1g
    *There are some cheaper ones, I just can't personally vouch for them.
    Any full spectrum light should work in place of a T5

      @joselynrosario5265 they’re pretty resilient, don’t stress too much! I picked out the biggest ones, some just never really grew while others did, so I tossed the stalled out ones and kept the winners. I waited until they were about pea sized and used tweezers to make a little hole in dampened cactus soil and then to gently move them. Diluted fertilizer here and there helps too in bulking them up some. I’m a chronic under waterer and they’re held up great so just don’t over water and you should be just fine! Good luck!

      @PamsPrettyPlants  4 года назад

      Hi! It does need to stay moist, I just didn’t happen to have to add any water because my container stayed nice and moist with the lid on. I’m sure direct sunlight would be sufficient, it just might take a little longer than mine did. I’ve noticed LED lights and heating mats just generally speed most things up and get high germination rates. But that doesn’t mean you NEED them. Hope this is helpful! My cacti have spikes but my soil also has dark mold on top. Is that normal? I put some horticultural charcoal on top which I had around and I'm hoping that will help.

      If they have the spikes you can start acclimating them to having the lid off and drying out and that should help with the mold! Scraping it off helps too

    Do you continue the 12 hrs light on 12 off the entire year. Do you use the warning mats the entire year too. I’m just now getting into planting succulents from seeds and am having lots of trial and error stuff going on. I am trying brain cactus’s and it is tough!!! Any help would be appreciated.

      Sorry I missed your comment, sometimes I find more on the computer than I do on my phone! I don't get very fussy with light times but generally its 12/12 during germination and 10 (on)/14(off) is another go-to for maintenance but sometimes I dont feel like resetting my timer and stuff stays on 12/12 for ages. I haven't noticed much difference.
      As for the warming mat, that's only for germination, it tends to dry out the soil quickly and it's not really necessary. You might find it useful after germination if you have your plants in a very cold room but overall I just use mine for germination.

    Thanks, question Planting substrate needs to be sterilized in microwave or the oven first?

    • @PamsPrettyPlants
      @PamsPrettyPlants  2 года назад

      I use boiling water to sterilize my soils but I didn’t sterilize the soil for these I don’t think.

    Just looking at the list of cacti contained in that pack, I'm going to say it's an awful mix if you want to grow the plants beyond the sprouting stage. Saguaros take decades to reach an interesting size, and all those prickly pears and chollas are fairly nasty plants for growing at home due to their sheathed spines and glochids. The "hedgehog", "fishhook barrel" and "cardon" are somewhat reasonable.
    I have grown quite a few cacti from seed before. You can get some very interesting plants if you research the particular varieties you want and order them individually from a good supplier (I have had a good experience with Mesa Garden).
