How to Grow Cactus from Seed (A beginners guide) |

  • There are different ways on how to grow cactus seeds. When done correctly, this is the method that I find requires the least amount of time in caring for seedlings. This is a beginners guide that shows one simple method of sowing the seeds, explains the basic care requirements, and shows possible problems/obstacles that may be encountered as cactus seedlings grow. When the seedlings are big enough, it is time to give them more room and the pricking out/transplanting of cactus seedlings starts. Patience is the key in growing cacti from seed. But it if you are up for the challenge, you will find that this is an economical way to grow your cactus and succulent collection. As a hobbyist, it is a rewarding and a very fulfilling experience as well.

For those asking for online source of cactus seeds, I only know of 2 websites - cactusstore.com (I only tried them once) and starastrophytum.com (suggested by a friend, but I have not personally tried them yet). 😉 if you become a member of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, you can get access to purchase seeds from their Seed Depot. Feel free to suggest websites that sell seeds which you have tried and had a good experience with. It will be useful information for everyone.

I used your method to start Astrophytum asteria super kabuto seeds with great trepidation as it was my first time. Besides your techniques, I used a heat pad in the evenings. I probably should have started to sow with a small sample of these designer cactus seeds but went all in with my 70 seeds I recently purchased on Etsy. Well, I just saw that the seeds are starting to germinate after five days! So excited and thank you for the beginners guide! I looked at many YT videos and yours was simple, easy, and thorough in explaining the process for me in the states (CA). Yay! What a relief! On to the next steps. Thanks, and keep making your insightful videos!

Just a tip for anyone trying to grow seeds. You can definitely pull them out of humidity whenever its required (fungus, rot, mass damping off). Common myth is that they need to adjust to low humidity. I pull mine out right after they germinate and i have over 95% survival rate.

On our small yard we have cactus that we call Nopal de Castilla (Prickly Pear Cactus). The variety that has super tiny, almost not visible spikes. We eat the pads when they are young and tender as well as the fruit, tuna as we call it.
Another favorite is Pitahaya (Dragon Fruit) and hoping your method helps us in having our first Dragon Fruit cactus.
