    Although the first-generation #AccordHybrid was a complete flop sales wise, #Honda made some significant changes for the next generation in 2014. For 2018, the #Accord hybrid returns based on the 10th generation platform, the look is all-new but the hybrid powertrain remains largely the same. With up to 47 MPG and 212 HP combined, this newest model starts at a little more than $25,000 dollars and it should be the perfect commuter car for those of you who need comfort, room, and efficiency in an overall package that doesn't look like a hybrid.

    I own an Accord Hybrid EX-L. Pretty good review, Sofyan, but a few comments:
    -The car gets its best fuel economy around town or at slower highway speeds like 55-65 mph. I can get 55 mpg in town fairly easily, which is great.
    -It's not quite as good on the highway as some competitors, and gets worse the faster you drive due to the direct-drive gearing. At higher speeds, you not only have to fight the air resistance, but also get increased friction through the engine due to the higher RPM. I average 43-44 mpg cruising at 72 mph, not the 47 mph EPA figure. This is better than non-hybrid Accords of course but not as good as Camry, Sonata, etc.
    -To be clear, the transmission is called an eCVT due to marketing and because it feels like a CVT under acceleration, but it is not a CVT. You will not find any pulleys or belts. There are two motors, the traction motor and the starter motor. The traction motor is connected to the front wheels and performs acceleration and regeneration from the car's kinetic energy. The starter motor is connected to the engine and performs engine starting and current generation. The current is supplied to the traction motor or to the batteries. That's it for operation under 45 mph. At 45 mph or above, there is a clutch in the eCVT that can engage the engine to the wheels for improved performance under acceleration. The reason for the speed limitation is because the engine is geared in direct drive, so it doesn't make sense to clutch it to the wheels when the engine RPM does not allow for power production, such as at 500 rpm (The Atkinson cycle engine also makes poor torque at low rpm).
    -All in all, it's a clever system that in my opinion feels more premium to drive due to the instant torque response, quiet and smooth operation, lack of gear changes or CVT lag, and the improved reliability that comes with the reduction in moving parts compared to an automatic transmission or a true CVT. Love my Accord!

      That's a lot to think about, thanks. I wonder how the torque curve compares to the gas-only model ? It seems he says it accelerates more quickly . I believe he said the 2.0 L engine is normally aspirated, unlike the regular 2.0 L model. I'm not wild about the jellybean styling and wish they still offered a 2-door.

    • @caglioso
      @caglioso 5 лет назад +9

      Stephen Powdexter the power between the hybrid and the 2.0 liter turbo engine isn’t even close tbh. I tested both and even though the hybrid picked up well, the 2.0L turbo felt like a race car by comparison. I wish I hadn’t tested the 2.0L turbo because now I want it even though it doesn’t make sense and I could use the fuel economy. But holy crap is it fun to drive.

      @@caglioso Yes the 2L turbo is an amazing machine. I am going to say of all the cars I have test driven $30k and under it felt the fastest, has a really good engine note, just a blast off the launch.
      BUT you are probably going to get 20MPG better in this than the 2L turbo, for something that is maybe a second or so slower 0 to 60. It just depends on what your usage case is. Other than the engine note I don't think the hybrid has any negatives. Drive it at under half throttle and it is really quiet.

    As an actual 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring owner/driver, I can attest that the sound is more muted than it seems to be in this video. Annoying stressed-engine sounds were common among all the hybrid sedans we test-drove. We considered the 2019 Insight, which is a better-looking, less-expensive car, and has better gas mileage. However, it isn't as smooth or as fast or as roomy or as comfortable as the Accord. And the noise from the engine is worse ...closer to what you hear in this video.

    My 2018 EX hybrid is about to turn 100,000 miles, and the only thing I have ever done to it are oil changes and tires. And the brakes are still at 11s and 12s which is essentially brand new.( A result of the regenerative braking of the hybrid power plant) it’s been a great car, the only issue is in cold weather the MPG‘s are in the 30s, and nowhere near the rated 48. Aside from that, I will run it probably till 300,000 miles or more

    I own a 2015 hybrid touring with 130 thousand miles and it’s s the best; i do taxi with it and theres things these reviews are not telling you. The oil change is every 10 thousand miles on a Hibrid accord the regular accord is every 3k miles. Also my brake lasted me up too 90 thousand miles because the Hibrid system barely used brake. The hibrid is super reliable no big issues just oil changes and tires great car.. recommended

    I just bought this car today except that I opted for the EX-L trim. Only put 21 miles on it so far but it is a very classy and very nice car. I thought the engine sounded fine for a hybrid four banger. I love when I turn on the sport mode, the gas engine comes to life and actually has a nice little growl. The lane keep assist is really really good, it will actually steer the car into the lane and although it warns you that you have to keep your hand on the wheel it feels like it can keep the car going for a lot longer. Adaptive cruise is also ahead of my other car, a 2018 mazda 6. I have yet to try the brake regen feature. Love the car so far.

    I just bought my 2019 Accord Hybrid Touring two weeks ago and filled it up for the first time this past weekend and the car said I got 45 MPG average while the math (trip odometer divided by gallons filled) said I got 46 MPG. The car only has 600 miles on it and am getting mid 40s. You do have to put a little work into making it happen, but when you said you drive with a little lead foot I think you mean a lot of a lead foot. I couldn't do 35mpg if I wanted to.
    I wish the drive review matched the mission of the car. Yes, it's faster than the 1.5T and slower than the 2.0T, but anyone who drives a hybrid with fuel saving in mind (at all) wouldn't hear the engine drone at all.

    • @Kelvin00

      A dealer near me in St. Louis. Big dealerships were telling me "we sell more Hondas than anyone in the state and we don't have to go that low to sell them. . . " so i said screw that and went to a smaller one and got that quote within 2 hours of making my first contact with the dealer.
      I got this with the $500 "recent college grad" but I never showed him my Degree. I've talked dealers down in the past asking for that while I was still in school so I know they are bullshit numbers they can mess with. I think the might also gave me a first responder bonus because I'm a firefighter and there's dealers around here giving first responder discounts and asked them to apply it and they did. They also screw up and gave me all weather floor mats and the extras for free because I asked for it, they said yes and then someone stuck them in the day before i bought the car and they couldn't physically take the add ons off so they kept their word.

    • @Kelvin00
      @Kelvin00 5 лет назад +28

      Walk away, i offered 3 different dealers $22,000 with whatever financing offer they pick and every one said no they can't go below their "invoice" of $24,600 or $24,700. Told them no thanks, 3 call backs within an hour saying $23,500 OTD. Kept playing two of them saying I'll come today and get it if you get closer to my price, got them both to say they couldn't do below $22,900 and then took that to a dealer I didn't know about and he said they can do $22,500 OTD if I can pick it up the next day. They are all liars, not so much the sales people but the managers. Never buy a car if they give you less than 15-18% off the sales price, NOT the MSRP. Helped my mom, brother, brother-in-law and then finally myself and every car, doesn't matter the brand or trim, all over 18% off and as high as 25% off. Also don't go in needing the car or with them knowing you have a trade in, always wait until the last minute of negotiations to tell them you had a trade in.

    I just bought (in Feb, 2021) a Touring model 2018 Accord hybrid, and if you want to save $12,000, keep your eyes on the pre-owned market, as there are a bunch of them being traded in after their 3-year leases. End of Feb 2021 I found a perfect condition, fully loaded, ivory interior Accord hybrid with 29K miles, for $25,000. Retail was about $35,000 in 2018, and the 2021 model (Touring) is $37,000, so if you want to save some good money, keep an eye out.
    Some notes from reviews: The paddles on the steering wheel are for regenerative braking, and this is the first car I've had with this feature. I am making a habit of using these paddles when slowing, coasting down hills, etc, because I know it will both increase MPG by keeping the battery full, and also greatly lengthen the life span of the brake pads! Also, many people comment about the LOUD engine noise, and I can tell you that you can really only hear this when in sport mode. While in Eco or regular mode, it really does drive like an electric, super-quiet, and when the engine does kick in, you can barely hear it, if at all. However, the power is there when you need it with Sport mode, but if you're always speeding around in Sport mode, maybe the non-hybrid Accord would be a better choice anyway.
    I am super-happy with my Accord purchase, and highly recommend it. I drove it back to back with a Camry hybrid and Sonata hybrid and I just loved the way this car accelerated, cruised, it was very different than the other two cars. The combination of the luxurious cabin, nice features such as heated AND cooled front seats and the clear Heads Up Display, the quietness of the car in general, and the driving dynamics made for an easy choice. I should mention that the Touring model gets lower MPG than lower models, though the EPA listings for 2018 do not show that. The 2021 model lists 48 MPG for all models EXCEPT the Touring, which is 43 MPG, and it seems it should be that way for the 2018 to 2020 models as well. I have only had the car for a few weeks, but am easily getting 42 MPG in my fully loaded Touring.

    That the trunk is the same size as a regular Accord is a big selling point for me.

    • @orientaldagger6920
      @orientaldagger6920 5 лет назад +1

      Yes that is a selling point. BUT a BIG negative is that the fuel tank size has been reduced from 15.8 gallons to 12.8 gallons, no doubt to accomodate the the battery pack's new location and to get maybe slightly better fuel economy (however much 3 gallons of gasline weighs). 3 gallons is somewhere around 150 miles of range that you are losing. On my 2015 I can easily go 650-680 miles between fillups.

      YMMV. I have decent ears (musician, former acoustical consultant), and I think it's pretty great. I have the high-end system, which comes with the EX-L and Touring trims. It was much better than the stock high-end systems in the other cars I test-drove, including the 2018 CR-V (which should be the same, you would think?). The sound seems balanced and natural. The speakers are well-placed. Put it this way: The car has become my favorite room for listening to music.

    Ordered and picked up my 2018 Accord Hybrid Touring last month. Outstanding, good looking car. The advertised 47/47/47 is not totally accurate. Driving conservatively I wanted to see what I could get. On one trip I got 55.7 mpg. But average HIGH 40s and low 50s. As infrequently as I gas up I may have to add fuel stabilizer to my gas tank. What a GREAT car, fun to drive, quiet, well made and comfortable.

    • @Plastigoop
      @Plastigoop 5 лет назад

      We got ours (2018 Touring, also) at the beginning of September. We've done about 2,500 miles, and are getting a combined mpg of about 44. The short city trips seem to drag it down. The highest for any trip was about 50 and that was hilly country driving, with few stops. So my question to you - and to any other HAH driver who is getting over 47 mpg: What's your secret?

    • @zbfng812
      @zbfng812 5 лет назад

      That HIGH mileage is not my normal mpg or my normal driving style. The one-time 55.7 mpg was in town, keeping it in EV mode as much as possible and driving it as gently as possible (accelerating it like a passive 'grandma' so as to keep it in EV. Also, keeping the climate control either off or at a temperature where it does NOT turn off EV mode, and coasting as much as possible - remembering that any time the engine comes on, lower mpg will result). This style of driving is really not practical daily driving. Under reasonable, NON-Sport mode driving, I average mid to high 40s. I will be taking some longer trips soon and will be curious as to the mpg then. (FYI. It has one recall for the rear camera. A minor glitch in the software. It was a fast, easy fix at the dealer).

    • @tomspencer5192
      @tomspencer5192 5 лет назад

      @Greg F. If you're an aggressive driver, get the 2.0. When I pushed it (70+ on the highway), it was the lowest MPG (~45).

    • @tomspencer5192
      @tomspencer5192 5 лет назад

      @Greg F. It all comes down to what you're comfortable with. I was looking for fuel efficiency but didn't want to sacrifice the ability to move. The hybrid is a good mix but I can see the appeal of the 2.0.

    Bought my new base trim 2019 hybrid model a year ago for just under $21k (basically inventory price). 30k miles and never taken it to the shop for anything other than oil changes and a tire rotation. Range varies depending on the weather, driving conditions and your driving style. In the summer, peak range is ~610 miles, and in the winter ~440 miles for me. If you're able to get a good deal like me, than hands down its a steal. Only downside is you will have to pay separately for the spare tire.

My 2015 Mazad 6 gets amazing mpg for a non hybrid. Do like the interior but nothing I would go crazy for. Still a fan of my Mazda versus this or Camry. I purchased an Accord 2.0T after driving the 2.0T, the Hybrid, the Insight, a Camry V6, and a Camry Hybrid. I owned a Camry hybrid for 10 years and was really looking to replace it with another one. Lack of Apple Carplay and Android Auto quickly crossed Toyotas off my list. Additionally, I like the Accord interior and road feel better than the Camry. I also like the Accord push-button shifter and the extra center space it creates. However, the Accord Hybrid engine on the freeway didn't cut it for me. The buzzing was really disturbing. It seemed like the engine struggled when accelerating, passing, or climbing even the shallowest incline. I am happy with the 2.0T -- except for the gas mileage.
