Is the 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid a BETTER hybrid than the Camry?

  • To the naked eye the Honda Accord Hybrid looks just like any other Accord, but that is a good thing. Under the hood is a 2.0L inline-4, and permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor that is producing 212 HP and mated to a CVT transmission. The Accord Hybrid has it's battery pack mounted under the rear seat so passenger room is plentiful. Find out all the details and see for yourself if the 2019 Honda Hybrid is the better buy!

    It’s a great car. I went with the Camry hybrid last year. The Honda is better for everything except for cross country road trips. I’m getting 49mpg on 2k mile road trips at 75-80 mph. Feels like magic.

    Absolutely nothing wrong with a cvt letting the engine stay at its literal peak numbers. I get it the sound from shifting is what we are conditioned to, but the way the cvt operates is just so much more efficient, and I actually praise honda for not adding fake shifts when you floor it since that just defeats the purpose of the cvt entirely

    • @jeffjo8732
      @jeffjo8732 4 года назад +2

      CVT is a misnomer. It actually has no transmission. Honda calls it an "eCVT", and the "e" means "electrically-coupled." There usually is no mechanical connection at all; the ICE drives a generator, and the car operates on electric drove only.

    Now do yourself a favor and review the 2.0T Touring model. Most of your zonks will disappear. Trust me you will love flooring it in sport mode - nice, smooth and very quick - 0-60 in 5.5 sec. - (quick for a family sedan of course)...
    I own the 2.0t Touring and have had many compliments on it. One time one of the workers at the car wash said after cleaning my car , “Wow! This is a New Accord? Very nice!” He then took a long last look at it nodded his head and gave a thumbs up.....He cleans BMWs, Mercedes', Audi's, etc.....that must mean something...

    Bought one of these in Touring trim a few months back and love it. Actually tried to buy from Tampa Honda -contacted them through CarGurus, but they never replied. Hopefully their service department is good because I live close by.
    When you are accelerating you are being driven by electric motor only. Gas engine is just acting as a generator for the electricity. Gas engine is only connected to the wheels in cruising conditions over 40 mph. A little gear will appear in the center of the Power Flow display when this happens.

    • @jsponson
      @jsponson 4 года назад

      You have to at least get the EX for rear vents. I agree that for a car that's so rear-passenger-frieindly these things should be standard. There should be rear readings lights too.

  • @mdw1000
    @mdw1000 4 года назад +7

    Also, it is an ecvt with planetary gears, not a traditional belt driven cvt

    • @jsponson
      @jsponson 4 года назад

      Honda's current hybrids do not use planetary gearsets. It's an electrical transmission. The engine is powers a generator and the electrical power is sent to a motor connected to the axle, like a diesel-electric locomotive. There's a simple clutch that engages when cruising at highway speeds. There are videos on RUclips explaining Honda's i-MMD.

    I just don't understand why I can't pull up a digital speedometer in MPH on the digital screen. That just seems like it should be one of the most basic functions of a digital display in the instrument cluster. Especially since the Civic has such cool digital speedometer, it sucks that the Accord and the Insight don't have it. Other than that I love this Accord Hybrid.

Range varies depending on the weather, driving conditions and your driving style. In the summer, peak range is ~610 miles, and in the winter ~440 miles for me. If you're able to get a good deal like me, than hands down its a steal. Only downside is you will have to pay separately for the spare tire.

      It's advertised as eCVT, not CVT. Like Toyota's, they are not the same thing. And in Hondas, the difference is even greater.
      It really should be called "vCVT," for "virtual" CVT. Because there is nothing physical about it. The engine drive a generator, and an electric motor drives the car. So there is no relationship between the engine's rpms and the wheels'.

    Let me tell you a funny story. I work in a medical building and I park in the same parking spot every day. These particular 4 parking spaces in the lot has the same people parking in them which are employees. We don’t want door dings. Anyway, there’s a dentist that parks next to me all the time. He had a 2013 Camry when ‘I had my 2017 Camry. When the redesign came out for the 2019 Camry, I traded my car in for the super white colored hybrid. Two weeks later I noticed there was another 2019 Camry in silver parking next to me. I figured the dentist traded his car in. I finally ran into him in the parking lot one night after work and I complimented him on his new car. He told me after he saw mine, he was totally sold on getting the new one. Only regret he had was he couldn’t get that super white color. They didn’t have one on the lot. I guess we’ve been playing Camry wars. Yes,
    I’m obsessed with Camry’s. They’re the best reliable cars on the road today. Keep your videos coming. Love your reviews. I look forward to them.

  • @SilverScarletSpider
    @SilverScarletSpider 4 года назад +6

    I’d say yes, the Accord Hybrid is a better value than the Camry Hybrid. Honda has always built the better driver’s car and engine compared to Toyota’s utilitarian commuters. Whether it be the Civic vs Corolla, Accord vs Camry, Fit vs Yaris, Acura vs Lexus. Just wish Subaru, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Mazda could step it up to in terms of 20+ year bulletproof reliability. We’re starting to see more older Hyundai’s and Kia’s surviving 15+ years as opposed to the usual Japanese and American rivals from the early 2000’s.

      At that price point and equipment, looks like a basic model. The "Red Lobster," seats come with.

    The way it starts to slope down towards the rear kinda bugs me. Reminds me of a dog with the tail between his legs, or squatting for a number 2.

    The Camry hybrid is faster in all 0 to 60, and in merging speeds. In addition, the battery cells will be easier to find and cheaper to replace

    About this car I just can’t stand with the engine noise 😫. Terrible sound. At least they might should instead make it similar to electric car.
    Not a fan of ECVT at all🤯
    I’d prefer less smoother and get 6-8 transmission speed rather than this horrible sound.

    Not as efficient as the Malibu Hybrid.

      Malibu isn't as stylish and is more poorly made, has a poor resale value, and is being discontinued in five years.

      @@travelseatsyellowlab thr Accord and it's chrome brow is hideous. The Sport looks under tired with it's wheels sunken.
      Cars dot.com has Malibu Hybrid for about $20K or 1/3rd off MSRP. Good finding any Japanese car made to matching that low of price and residual.
