  • Edmunds Senior Writer Carlos Lago drives and reviews the new 2019 Honda Insight. The latest version of Honda's compact hybrid shares little with its predecessors and its contemporaries. It looks good, for starters, and it is nowhere near as militant about prioritizing fuel efficiency. How does it work on the road? That's what we'll find out in this video.
    Q: What kind of engine and transmission does the 2019 Honda Insight have?
    A: The Insight has a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that primarily generates electricity for the motor that drives the front wheels and a 1.1-kWh battery. The engine can supply power directly to the front wheels under heavy accelerator use and at freeway speeds, but does so through a clutch and a fixed gear ratio. There is no traditional automatic or continuously variable automatic transmission. The net output is 151 horsepower and 197 pound-feet of torque
    Q: How much does the 2019 Honda Insight cost?
    A: The Insight starts at $23,725 and tops out at $28,985, including destination.
    Q: What kind of fuel economy does the 2019 Honda Insight offer?
    A: The base LX and midgrade EX trim levels are rated at 52 mpg combined (55 city/49 highway). The top-end Touring comes with additional features that move it to a different weight class, so it's rated by the EPA at 48 mpg combined (51 city/45 highway).
    Q: What are the 2019 Honda Insight's main competitors?
    A: The Insight's pricing and fuel economy mirror that of the 2018 Toyota Prius and the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq. Along with more power, the Insight offers a sharper exterior design and a more functional and nicer-looking interior.

      Eh.....I drove a 2019 Insight for two weeks. Never got much above the rated MPG's and often was less. Then I drove a 2018 Prius 4. I often got 70+ MPG's and a few times over 100 MPG's. The Insight does not have the cargo area that the Prius has. The Insight and Honda are about equal in ride quality. Yeah, the Insight is a bit less expensive but I NEVER EVER buy a first year car. I have found that the first year cars usually need updating and the years following usually are better with reliability and features. I love Honda.....but the 2018 Prius 4 was so good that I bought it. YMMV.

      This is the nicest looking Honda, although I'm still not sure about the wheels, and I'm especially tired of what Honda does with its bits of chrome "garnish." Mazda has a much better aesthetic these days. I wish Honda would focus on elegant lines, like they used to, not the bright little add-ons.

      Acc0rd79 I think it actually look boring. It just looks like a normal sedan. From a distance everyone will think it's a civic or accord. It's gonna blend in which is not a good thing for a new model. It needs to look different. It's not a ugly car but it doesn't stand out in anyway

    One thing I *REALLY* like about the 2019 Insight: the styling. They successfully _toned down_ the silly-looking front and rear ends found on the current Civic models. Indeed, the 2019 Civic sedan and coupe models have redesigned front and rear ends that are quite a bit more restrained compared to the 2016-2018 models.

    First hybrid I would consider, precisely because it looks and behaves like a "regular" car. If Honda made this in a HATCHBACK model, I would almost definitely buy this for my next car. I drove a 2005 CRV for eleven years and this looks better, but you sacrifice so much functionality with a sedan. I need to occasionally haul large boxes or furniture pieces without borrowing someone else's vehicle, or the expense of owning a second car. I once moved an overstuffed Lazy Boy recliner type chair using a much smaller Datsun B210, but it had that magical fastback hatch door on the end and I think I could have put a couch in there if I tried.

      I beg to differ. Nearly all previous and some current gens hybrids are all hatchbacks. I drove a sedan before I got my insight. I was not happy for the available hybrids that are out because they were either hatchbacks or main sedan lines turned hybrid. I'm glad Honda decided to revive their hybrid as a sedan

    What about this? Do you get a sense of braking when put off the gas (accelerator) pedals?
    Do the generative brake kick in when you off gas?

    For me personally, I was crossed between the Ford Fusion Hybrid (but the whole trunk is gone, and the battery seemed last thought like ford was like" Oh yeah, we are building a hybrid, where do we put the battery?") and this, which is based on the civic platform and other than knowing it is hybrid, you wouldn't be able to tell otherwise. Looks and drives like a cross between the Accord and Civic. This gets at or better overall gas mileage than the new Chevy Volt Plug-in Hybrid (for long range trips), although the Volt and Insight are not exactly directly comparable to each othert, however, the Volt costs 10,000 more for the options, unless you are lucky enough to get the tax credit. Props Honda, thanks for making great cars. I will most likely be getting a Honda Insight when my Escape (will never buy again) comes up for lease-end.

My only gripe is the ivory cloth interior will easily get dirty. Taking steps to avoid that. I didnt like the black cloth interior, too dark and lacks a 2 tone dash look.

    I looked at this car today at the Honda dealer. I was REALLY impressed! I really want another hybrid, since I driver a lot (20,000 miles a year at least). I have a 2011 Honda CR-Z hybrid now with 160,000 miles on it. It's been the best car I've had, reliability and comfort-wise, but it doesn't get the mileage of most small hybrids (38 - 42 mpg). Plus, I like all the modern safety features the Insight has. The EX model I'm looking at is $25,000. Very nicely put-together car for the price.

    Great review! Honda Lane Watch is a great feature, I wish every car had it. As far as “losing” navigation it only comes on when you turn the right hand signal on (unless you deliberately turn it on). Not really a game changer in my opinion and being able to see cars in your blind spot out weighs the inconvenience of losing other features for a couple of seconds. From what I understand you can turn Lane Watch off completely if you want. I appreciate you spending more time actually driving the car and talking about the mechanics of it, transmission, etc than focusing on “soft touch materials” like some other reviews do. Well done! 👍🏼

First year I got average about 48mpg, then 47, then 46. Still pretty good and the car is fast, very easy to manouver. Plenty of power even at 151HP. Drive like a regular civic or sport car at non-eco mode or sport mode, but that would decrease my mpg and the defeat the purpose of owning a hybrid car; but the power is there when I need it. I don't understand why would I need any car more expensive than this. The price is right. Powerful and plenty of comfort, techy, space... Hybrid is the way to go because I can power my car with gasoline instead of relying on the power grid. Gas is everywhere when I need it but charging stations are not.

Pretty quiet driving along, not whisper Lexus quiet, but surely a comfortable level of sound. Going uphill when engine has to go into higher power range, you do hear a moderate degree humming/revving...Not bad at all, in my opinion considering its strengths are the priority, a smoother quiet ride is not supposed to be its priority . Complaining by the reviewer about the Honda LaneWatch or what my family calls the Blindspot camera is short sighted and a little reductive - it only comes on when you flip the right signal lever or when you push the button to directly turn it on. His observation that it gets in the way of the nav is silly because it only appears when you need it. It has saved myself and the members of my family when they were teenagers (we all had different models with the camera, a CR-V, a Civic and a Fit) from some very close calls out on the road and I hate to think about driving a vehicle without this feature. It is also especially important to people who have difficulty turning their necks to physically check their blindspot or when carrying a full load of cargo or people who may be blocking windows. I am so disappointed that Honda has chosen to remove the LaneWatch camera from its other models because I've always trusted my eyes more than a sensor when it comes to being absolutely sure that the blindspot is clear! I've driven a CR-V for years and unless I can get comfortable with the Insight, I'll have to look to another manufacturer that still has the Blindspot camera.

    Wish it was a hatchback, kinda weird the first two Insight models were.. and that the Civic this is based on is available as a hatchback also.
    The Hyundai Ioniq also does not scream Hybrid. And drives even more like a regular car with it's 6spd DCT transmission.. and is more fuel efficient in it's Blue eco trim.
    I'd take the Ioniq over this.. I think.
    Really don't like the sedan layout..
    Car looks great on the outside..and inside though.. they definitely got that right.

    it's just an Accord Hybrid downsized to Civic platform. the Accord Hybrid still gets 47 mpg despite being much bigger and having over 200 hp. technologically nothing new here but now the same tech that's already in Accord Hybrid, Camry Hybrid and Prius is finally available in a compact sedan. personally i find Honda Clarity PHEV more interesting but not everybody has time or space to charge a car and not everybody will qualify for ZEV credits that would bring the price of Clarity PHEV down to the range of Insight. that said every new Honda i test drove recently was good and i don't see why this should be any different.

      Accord has blind spot monitoring and cross traffic detection as well as parking assist. Nothing like it here. Morons in Honda don't think that people who like small cars might want it.

    • @g1981c
      @g1981c 6 лет назад

      Prius and Camry hybrid use exactly identical tech ( Hybrid Synergy Drive ) just different size powerplant. Accord and Insight use exactly identical tech ( Intelligent Multi Mode Drive ) just different size powerplant. Toyota and Honda systems are different in theory but in practice accomplish the same thing and equally as well but Toyota was first and as a result their system is more proven from reliability perspective.

    • @g1981c
      @g1981c 6 лет назад

      it's like that with most car makers - small cars are designed to force you to upgrade. the insight is actually much less of a penalty for going compact than prius or corolla for example, but it's still a penalty.

    • @jewelmarkess
      @jewelmarkess 6 лет назад

      g1981c - yes. It's the same thing with Touring - they offer navigation system as optional on EX, but Touring offers more luxury features that I like. At the same time, I don't care about sun roof or 17 inch wheels. I wish these features were optional on EX. But as you say, they want us to upgrade to a more expensive model. Prius Sedan? Does it already exist or is it coming out later this year?

    • @g1981c
      @g1981c 6 лет назад

      Prius sedan ? in the last year Hybrids have moved the battery from the trunk to under rear seat ( Toyota and Honda both did it for all their hybrids at the same time ) and this would enable a Prius sedan possibility in theory ( the original reason for Prius bubble shape was to have battery in the trunk and still have enough room for cargo, but latest Prius already has battery under rear seat so it could have been a Sedan ). if a Prius sedan will ever come it will probably be called Corolla Hybrid but so far the only new Corolla that was unveiled is a hatchback so i don't know when the next Corolla sedan is coming ... pretty sure it won't look as good as Insight though.

    It totally is way better than a prius. from the styling to the features, it is far superior. Another great thing is that you can decide what kind of driving you want to do, from eco mode that gives you amazing fuel efficiency, to the sport mode that will give you more power and control. Honda sensing is what really is what makes the Insight a home run compared to a prius.

    I sat in the current model Prius and the seats are very narrow and seating position is awkward and my knees were rubbing the steering column with the seat all the way back. Most uncomfortable car I've ever sat in. I don't doubt the engines or reliability but it's just soooooo uncomfortable. I'd be interested in this honda insight, price, comfort, style and gas mileage. I'm will to sacrifice some mileage for comfort in the end.

    CARLOS, how does this Hybrid compares in interior space vs. TESLA Model 3? (Head room, Leg room etc.) I know its not a fair apples to apples comparison, but for me, if at $28,000 for 55 mpg, and NOT have to wait two years for a $35k Tesla, this is looknig very good. You forgot to mention rear seat space, next time seat on rear seat. Evrything else, great video, best regards

      chocolatewheelchair You are right, I like the Tesla Model 3, but i saw it at the NYC Show room in person , and for $55k (thats whats available for now, plus two year waiting list) it's not that nice at $55k. The INSIGHT EX, 55 MPG and at $25k may be a better deal if you dont mind that its not a Tesla badge and dont want to plan your driving to charge on long trips. 55 mpg is amazing, and this may even be similar in passanger interior room than model 3. In addition, the purchace price savings may be even better than the savings in fuel vs electricity cost savings at 55 mpg. Ahhh... i just talked myself out of a Tesla :-)

    • @CarlosLago
      @CarlosLago 6 лет назад +1

      Front seat space is similar, and the Insight's rear seat is a little tighter, but not by much. Similar cargo volume, too. Keep in mind that the city mpg rating is 55; combined fuel economy ranges between 48 and 52 mpg, depending on trim level. But thanks to diminishing returns, that difference probably won't be noticeable to most people.

  • @kens97sto171
    @kens97sto171 4 года назад

    One a really annoying factor in both the Accord and the Insight.
    when you put those seats down for some reason they put the male part of the latch on the back of the seat so if you go to slide something in there it's going to hit the hooks.
    The Accord is this way to this really limits the actual amount of stuff you could put back there with the seats down.
    Or you would have to lay whatever it is on top of the protruding hooks which might damage the cargo.
    I assume they did this because the release mechanism is inside the trunk area.
    the problem is the release mechanism doesn't actually work that well you pull the handle and then you have to open the passenger side rear door and put the seat down anyway.
    most of their cars the latch is in the seat back itself along with the female part of the latch mechanism and the male part of the latch mechanism with the hook stays on the car body.
    might seem like a small detail but if you're comparing it to a Prius which already has better storage possibilities you now have limited even more because of the stupid design.
    So even though it's quite boring I would get a Prius instead.

    Look up the Camry LE Hybrid it gets 52 MPG has a 2.5L and way more HP @ 208HP. If price is an issue go with the Insight... if you want a Hybrid with great looks and the power to match plus the MPG stick with the Camry.

    Maybe it's just me: why automotive designers keep putting directional (aka turbine style) alloy wheels if it doesn't have unique design for each side. It's a turn down for me when the vehicle is viewed on the driverside the wheels spins one way and on the pax side it spins the other.

      Dominic Fong I agree. Before radial tires it made sense to have four identical wheels because you rotated tires across the vehicle not just front to back. Now, it is strictly because it would cost more to stock and sort wheels based upon which side they get installed.

      tesla pete: No, I haven't. To be honest, I have always been intrigued by hybrids but could not justify the added cost. The Clarity has caught my eye because of the tax rebate. That car is not a hot seller in my area. It is fairly expensive due to the high level of standard equipment. Most people don't have 220 available in their garage and don't want the added expense to get it wired and to buy a level 2 charger. So, I might be able to negotiate a good price. I can do the wiring myself and have a 30 amp service close by with an option to pull a full 40 amp service. Have not decided. If Honda had a plugin version of the Insight I'd buy it in a New York minute.
