- With up to 47 miles of electric only range and a 1.5L gas engine to give you another 360 miles of range, the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is designed to give you the EV range you need for your daily commute plus the security of being able to fill it with gas when you need to go on a longer trip. If you need a comfortable commuter car that is roomy, well equipped, and easy to drive, the 2018 Clarity should be at the top of your list... just be sure you can get past the strange styling.
Авто/Мото
I own a 2018 Clarity can agree with his statement about keeping the full tank. I have only gotten gas 3xs in the 3 months I have had it. I typically get 55+ miles on battery alone. An amazing commuter!!!! I love getting gas only 12-14 bucks
Adonis Lipscomb before you brought it did you compare it with the Insight?
@@ezeo.7315 The insight wasn't being released yet, but I would have still chosen my clarity, its much larger than the insight.
I get 250+ and since Jan 2018 I have put no gas in mine..a Chev volt. Time to get a new car
D exactly I have only fuel up about once every 3 months+ on Chevy volt. And fuel efficiency is always 100+ mph. 50miles on electric only.
I love mine but only get 24-25 miles per full charge? I’m trying to figure out why? I was told I’d get at least 48 per full charge? Anyone have an idea?
I have been driving this car for over a week and put over 350 miles. I still have a full tanks of gas and I am averaging 53 EV miles! Great commuter car and big enough to carry passengers too.
Who cares about the rear wheel skirt design when your saving $$$$ as you drive by waving to all those 'negative nancies' lined up at the local gas bar? It's designed for wind drag to improve mileage. Excellent and informative review, thanks!
The clarity doesn't have a CVT transmission, it is an electric motor that has a single speed. At highway speeds the gas engine can directly connect to the drivetrain. Only at highway speeds since it is a single speed transmission, at all other speeds, the gas engine turns a generator to power the electric motor. This is a series hybrid versus a parallel hybrid.
Can't believe I'm the first person to correct you. You just said that it can connect directly at highway speeds, which means in that state it IS a parallel hybrid. The Volt is similar, and can run as both a series and parallel hybrid.
We've had this exact version of the clarity for 5 months and we absolutely love it. Price came out to $25k after incentives/rebates. There is no better commuter for the price.
Would this car make sense for long distance commute? As in 180 miles round-trip?
@@rxonmymind8362 It is still a great car in hybrid mode and has about 400 miles of total range in real life. The gas engine sounds annoying at low speeds, but you can't hear it at highway speeds.
Advanced Form I’m curious, did you ever test the Ioniq? What do u think of that little car?
I think the rear wheel skirt design is to reduce drag. In the 50s the fender skirts was for looks.
The clarity is a very slept on car, it's AMAZING all around!
I have owned one for about 7 months, and driven it for more than 12,000 miles. I am 6 feet tall, but most of that is body, so i sit very tall. I weigh 220. The car is extremely comfortable to drive. I have gotten more comments from people who like the look of the car than any car I have ever owned.
The three complaints I get from non-owners are 1) it looks funny. 2) no lumbar support 3) no mirror blind-spot warnings.
These turned out not to be an issue at all.
1) People really like the look of the car, though there is a small cadre who do not. Can't help that.
2) The lumbar support has turned out to be a non-issue. While I would like some flexibility here (and would have paid for it) I have driven this car all over Texas, and never had any need to adjust the back support. The seat is fantastic for my frame.
3) I thought the video blind spot stuff was weird, buy I have become really dependant on it. It shows the blind spot back for 10 or more car lengths. This is really critical when exiting the freeway, and needing to merge onto fast moving access roads. It is far superior for that piece. That said, I would still like the blind spot warnings on the drivers side. The car has great vision all the way around, but we still get lazy and need it to be there. Not a deal breaker.
I drive a lot (20k a year) and I put about 5 gallons of gas in this car every two weeks. Just great gas mileage. That works out to about 153 miles per gallon, on average.
It cost me $1500 to wire my garage and buy a 220 charger, but if you are going electric, this will not be the last electric car you have.
If you live in an apartment complex, what are my options for charging? does the Honda dealership maybe have charging stations?
@@designthinkingwithgian you could charge at any public charging station when you run errands or if your work has one
I actually like the design over the back wheels
It's a nice throw back!
I LOVE mine. Bought in January. Took a road trip to Canada, no problems getting charged. Got 70+ mph, but we get 100mpg+ if we just stay around town. Very comfortable for road trips. All the bells and whistles but I would like a sunroof.
Clarity owner here, clarifying the "Modes". Econ, Normal and Sport are options that alter how aggressively you use power. Econ will cut back the heat pump to conserve charge/fuel, Normal is the base and Sport gives you max power (fuel and electricity) and you'll notice. Hybrid mode can be engaged in any of these modes. One push maintains your charge level, uses gas/electric and is what you use on the highway for cruising. Push and hold and you get into charge mode, which will take your battery back up to 57% charge (max). Why do this? Electric mode is way better in the city (quiet and smooth), Hybrid is great on the highway. So far I am getting better mileage/range than Honda indicates. Matched the Honda mpg for Highway with a loaded car (5 people and luggage). Not designed for speed, handles nice, sips fuel. The looks are controversial; some like some don't. I don't care much, I pay nearly nothing to propel this car vs. my old Sonata PHEV and that is what I like.
How’s the snow?
Also to clarify (no pun intended) do you recommend the sport mode then for highway?
@@NuviReyes hi, I run Blizzaks in the winter. Ground clearance is the main issue. Wish Honda had a button to really deaden the accelerator when trying to get unstuck, but the linear power delivery is great. I run Econ almost all the time. All about saving gas.
Shawn Key thank you so much
A wagon version of this would be amazing!
That would be the perfect car
Cross tour 2
Looking forward to seeing this car improve. There's a small bundle of things I don't like such as the volume controls and the just generally outdated tech in the center but hopefully in 3 years when my lease is up they'll have a nice well-rounded plug-in for me to try
I've seen a few of these around surprisingly. They're really nice looking, I really wanna see them improve on the all electric version, and maybe make it a Model 3 competitor
That button on the key fob that you press and hold just opens the charge door. There is also a button inside the car that opens the charge door. It has nothing to do with actually charging the car. When you plug the cable into the charge port the car starts charging. That's it. There are no extra buttons or steps. Plug in and charge. Done.
Yup. You don't hold it to charge. It just opens the door.
Thank God you addressed this. I was so confused lol. Seemed so unnecessary
I bought the Clarity and have 1,100 miles on it, but have only used 2 gallons of gas since I got it from the dealer. I drive 20,000 miles a year. Great car. $30,000 - $9,000 fed and state credits and rebates = $21,000. I get 60 miles on a charge on LA freeway driving. Select “narrow” option on Honda lane keep assist and it will turn the car for you on freeways better than in this video.
How much do you save?
Do Americans always calculate this way? Here in Europe we always calculate everything down to COST PER KILOMETER. (Including the price of the whole car)
Still like it?
I think they are quirky in a very cool way. I like the look. It looks like a spaceship. I would hook mine up if I had one. Black the top out, black out all the chrome, different wheels, blacked out and slightly bigger.
I drove one of these today. Yeah it’s ugly but it drives great. Easy to use. Plenty of power and speed. Comfy seats. Good value if you can get a used one for $22k.
I was pumping gas in Los Angeles Arco station and saw Clarity owners filling up their car nearby hydrogen fuel cell charging space. I asked if they like their car and both of them loved their car. Some of the things they shared. A. Honda provided them with a Prepaid card which can be used to fill up the car. ( $750 I think for a year ) B. In case you have to drive out of state with less hydrogen fuel stations, AVIS card was provided 21 days of free rental. C. If there is a car problem the parts have to fly in from JPN. One owner reported that he received the rental car and $500 for his trouble. D. Zero Emission. E. Highway carpool lane pass.
I do not see that much Honda Clarity running around in LA as much as Toyota Prius, but I'm glad more car manufacturers are pushing towards post-petrol energy source.
As Elon Musk mentioned, I do have a reservation regarding the cost of hydrogen fuel. ( not per KG, but the energy it requires to collect hydrogen..) I think I will be replacing my car within 1-2 years and looking forward to replacing my regular car with electric or hydrogen fuel cell car.
Kudos to Honda for pushing new option and Toyota for bring back electric cars back to masses, and Tesla for making electric cars sexy.
The cobalt method for hydrogen extraction will be a game changer. The sooner we can get batteries out of the equation the better
I actually kinda like the rear... side panel thing. That 1950/1960 retro synth feel, I dig it. Imagine a full blown electric alfa romeo carabo style car. Oh man
It kind of reminds me of what people of the 1950s would have imagined the car of the future would look like. I think that's pretty cool.
I have now owned my Clarity for little over a month now and it is the best vehicle I have ever purchased. And just so everyone knows, the seats do fold 60/40 just like the Insight. The hinges are in the trunk as well as the Insight. And for anyone who owns a Clarity, you do not have to hold the "Hold" button with the lightning bolt on it in order to start charging the vehicle once you plug it in. Doing so just overrides a charging schedule you have active and starts charging the car. If there is no charging schedule active, then the car starts charging immediately upon plugging it in.
I bought the touring version with black exterior and matching interior. I highly recommend it and this video is spot on with one exception. This car has amazing acceleration when placed in sport mode. It literally takes off like a rocket and you have to brace yourself. Lots of fun to drive. I didn't put gas in it for over a month. I tripped the gfi on my garage plug on an overnight charge so it didn't charge that night. The next day I drove it like a normal car, no problem. Android auto dominates my council so I get everything on my phone when driving. Phone calls are nice and crisp audio in the vehicle. This is a hidden gem.
I love my Clarity! I was the first in my city (of 1.3 million!) to have one. 18 months and 22 000 miles! 75%+ on full EV! Changing the oil is hilariously unnecessary (but I still do it).
The button on the key fob only opens the electric charge door. You do not need to press it to charge the vehicle, I am a Clarity owner.
Another top notch review, thanks man
This and the Honda Accord are my favorites
I am currently leasing the EV model of this car, after the rebates I average about $140/month so the car basically pays for itself since I drive 70 miles everyday. It's a great practical daily car. - drives well and sits well. I just hope it has blind spot detection instead of the side lane view camera. I especially like its walk away auto lock and remote climate control using my phone. After end of lease I am looking to purchase a used plug in hybrid model if the price makes sense.
does the battery drain fast while using highways
I absolutely love the interior of this car. I sat in one at a local dealership and the quality and comfort on the inside is incredible. But I just can't get over the exterior styling. Honda almost has something great
I ordered this beauty since April from ontario Canada..still no call from my Honda dealership. The incentives (13k cad)cut off line is on Sept 10th. Plan b Honda insight.
People who think it's ugly forget the Prius and Aztec.. The reason Prius sold and Aztec bombed, insane gas mileage and reliability
If Honda were truly smart, they'd build off of the clarity name and build a clarity suv.
Iike a Honda clarity cross?
@@soul.rhymes better yet they should just make a CRV plug in. Would sell like hotcakes
Thanks Sofyan! I'm taking a lot of your review style and putting my own spin on it in my own review. I'm excited to keep growing my channel. Thanks for the inspiriation - great review as always.
Damn!!! You put 250 miles on that thing and still had a full tank?? I need to get me a hybrid lol
That's bc we would drive it using only the electric range then plug it in at night. Its a great option for someone who has a less then 50 mile a day commute to work.
well it's a plug in hybrid. so he just wasn't driving enough in one day. depends on how much you drive daily.
It's also a plus for the hov lane on 66 so you will not get a ticket. And trust me Virginia will not give you a warning.
I have a 2 miles commute; what do you suggest I buy?
And don't tell me to walk there's a bridge to cross and lots of trafic and I work long hours.
Should've made it a liftback.
ThatGuyKwe ikr 😞
Yes. Smart.
My guess is that the vehicles structure to protect the battery pack from side impact meant the hatchback wouldn't work. There's a huge structural member behind the rear seats and over the pass through.
Looks like a Buick from the rear. Not bad overall. Beautiful interior. Honda is definitely upgrading their profile.
Theodrick Davis I love the front lights.
I can only wish my MDX Hybrid is a plug-in with the electric range of the Clarity plug-in.
@Redline Reviews
Please do review and test drive 2018 Mahindra Roxor Jeep. Thanx
Sold my Tesla Model 3 LDRM after reading about this car and getting it. I have a fully optioned Model 3 LRDM with FSD and let me tell you that it doesn't matter if Tesla offers a 330-400mi range battery. It can't compare to a good PHEV. No more range anxiety with Clarity. Even with a 330mi range Model 3 at best I could only achieve 260mi range and 175mi range in the winter. The Clarity I just filled up gas whenever I need it and local driving rarely have to charge.
To be honest i think its a luxurious car
What do you think about the Honda CR-Z?
Thanks for the review. I agree with the rear wheel overhang fairing. Right away , didn't like it and still don't. I think that suede leather, like shoes, will be hard to keep clean.
Please do a review on the 2018 Honda accord hybrid
Nice :) also waiting for Subaru Evoltis at the end of this year
I just bought this car and I do hate the rear tire covers but the car looks nice regardless. I do find that the gas engine does come on about 45% power and not 50-60 like the video mentions. If your commute is between 20-30 miles you probably dont need gas at all. I love this car.
Also like to add that the hv charge mode will only charge the engine to 58% im sure thats for safety reasons. Recently I let the battery go to 10% charge and activated the charge mode. It took roughly 25-20 minutes to get it to 58% charge.
Awesome video
You didn't read the manual to understand HV mode. You mentioned HV Charge mode (twice), but didn't explain that regular HV mode preserves whatever charge is in the battery while the car acts like a traditional hybrid. You didn't explain how the engine-drive clutch works. Did you ever consider that the rear wheel well design has aerodynamic benefits? You should check out the aerodynamic vents for both the front and rear wheels. Also, the reason it doesn't have a sunroof isn't because it's made in Japan. Many Japanese-made Hondas have sunroofs. Sadly, Honda didn't give a Clarity with the updated HV Range software, so it shows impossibly high HV Range. BTW, the Clarity PHEV is just now going on sale in Japan--for $52K! We bought our Clarity PHEV in early December and haven't been to the gas station for the first time yet.
Thank you for clarifying those things he failed to mention
The best looking hybrid
I absolutely LOVE those wheel skirts! They not only make the car more efficient by reducing airflow drag, they make the car more beautiful too! I think those who object do so because they are not used to seeing wheel skirts. Many people think that anything different is ugly. They are wrong.
I know hypermilers ( people who mod their cars for better milage), promots wheel skirts
5. I have a great
I bought this exact car and color two weeks ago
When talking about the rear wheels I think Honda should have A. ditched the skirting all together or B. covered the whole wheel with a detachable panel like the 1st gen insight.
If the back wasn’t basically a revamp of the Accord crosstour, it would look pretty good
Sad to find out I purchased a 2021 and a week later they will not make it anymore. Ran it on 0 miles to E with gas. Still able to ride out on electric, but has the reserve fuel left. 6.84 purchased in fuel.
Picking up a pre-owned 2018 touring this Saturday! Trading in my 2014 Xterra gas guzzler. 15mpg on a 75mi round trip is killing me. ~$450/month in gas.
Really looking forward to express lane access on my highway to work. Get free charging at Uni so I don't imagine I'll fill up very often!
How does the electric engine/battery react to very cold climates?
Wish Honda would offer this color on the Insight along with a beige interior.
Does the Insight offer any gov't rebates or such like the Clarity?
FYI... You don't have to press and hold the charge button on the FOB to charge the Clarity... you only have to do that if a scheduled charge is stored in the charge menu of the vehicle's computer. If you turn off scheduled charge, you simply plug in the J1772 connector and it will start charging immediately.
You don’t need to press the charge button on the remote to start the charge. The button opens the lid so you can start charging. The light turns green when the car is charging.
Do you have one?
@@ekphapai7310 Yeap, it’s my everyday commute car. I pump gas 3 to 4 times a year.
On the sport mode you can ride at on pedal. Just engage sport mode and engage regeneration at the level you want and the car ride at on pedal: each time you left the gaz pedal, the regeneration motor brakes the car. I have 60,000 km on this car and brakes are used at 20%. The regeneration motor make a good; it help brakes. I live at Quebec city in Canada. Winters are cold very cold. This car dont use gaz motor to warm the car; it use an electric compressor like a home freezer. The warm come rapidly when it is cold. Rear suspension is like a truc suspension to support the battery.
that color combination is like the 2018 version of hunter green and tan.
its a little was warm out there 109, unique car but really for the a select group of folks.
Are the rear wheel skirts there for aerodynamic efficiency?
Doe a review of the 2019 Hondapilot and 2019 Honda Hrv
who knows, maybe these skirts and wheels will make Clarity a collector's car one day! it's got what it needs to age well.
A good value if you can get past the exterior.
Any idea when the next model year will come out?
I like the skirts. I think they make the car look unique. The only thing I don't like is the huge front overhang, which looks disproportional to me.
This is not much to look at but once you sit behind the steering wheel, oh boy, i took all my doubts back
Hi im buying a 2018 touring with 9 k miles do you recommend it also anything that I need to know as today when buying the car through CarMax I’m getting the max care warranty 150k or 60 months a little piece of mind
Looks really good for Honda
Do you know whether this car is coming to the UK?
Correction about the Key Fob:
1: when starting the climate control, you have to hit the lock button, then hold the fan button until the lights go *Blink - - - Blink Blink Blink* - then the A/C will activate.
2: Unless you have a delayed charge scheduled, the vehicle will charge without the use of the button. That's merely to release the charge cover door.
---> 2A: If you have delayed charging or scheduled charging set, the key fob button will override that setting to allow charging. This is especially useful for people who get a special EV charging rate or off-peak electricity rate. ruclips.net/video/JARTPt4vtVo/видео.html
Non cooled/ventilated seats will be missed in Phoenix and no volume knob? Come on Honda, kinda 1/2 hearted on the driver interface. Otherwise, what an otherwise excellent car. Thank you for the great and thoroughly thorough review!
You can control the volume on the steering wheel. It's actually a very good design.
Beauty, like ugly, is in the eye of the beholder. There's no accounting for taste; so to each, his own. I wonder what, other than a plug and the Clarity's 17KwH battery, it would take to turn the Insight into a plug-in hybrid. If it's this close already, why not go all the way. For that matter then the Accord Hybrid could be plug-n-battery upgraded. Just came from watching YT videos re. what it's like to run out of charge in a Tesla. It was taken away on a flat-bed. Then I thought that cargo space up front would be a convenient place to put a small motor/generator that could extend the car's range. Back to the clarity, will wait until the 5-door "sport-wagon" becomes available, premium audio as well.
Looking at this car and the previous Insight... it seems to me that this car looks a lot more what the new Insight should've looked like. The 2018 insight should've been named Civic Hybrid.
It's unfortunate Honda had very limited stock for Ontario in first half of 2018, dealerships had to return deposits to would-be buyers as there was no 'clarity' if and when the Clarity would arrive on dealer lots. Now with the new Ontario government having canceled cap-n-trade, and having canceled Phev / EV rebates ( it was upto 14000 $ Cdn ), Clarity or any other Phev / EV sales will just tank here in Ontario.
Side skirts don’t bother me as much as the trunk opening. Appears small, a lift back would have been nice. Perfect commuter though and definitely a vehicle I would consider buying.
The skirt worked for the '68 Bonneville...
Sofyan, un your opinion is it worth to spend the few extra grand in the Clarity and mostly stay electric or go cheaper with the Insight and get a highly efficient hybrid?
How long until they even up in the long run for spending if intended to use the Clarity within the 47 mile range?
A. PLUR if your daily commute to work is within the 47 mile electric only range and you prefer a car with more interior space it would definitely be worth it to spend a bit more initially on the Clarity versus the Insight. Plus, if you live in America you can take advantage of the $7,500 tax credit.
I would like to know how often the engine needs service like oil change and stuff in this type of cars. Is it based on hours of use and displayed on the cluster? Or has a service light that comes on?
There is a maintenance minder in the instrument cluster that monitors how much the engine is used. it automatically tells you to change the oil after a year since that's the average life of oil.
Any changes for the 2019 model? They should have put the new infotainment system in. ...If gasoline just sits there in the tank week after week do you have to worry about adding a fuel stabilizer? ... I drive a CRV but find Honda’s model names confusing. $37,000? .... I suppose the ev tax credit has expired.
Does it have the parking assist? Self driving by its own?
I always look up redline reviews before I buy a car.
WHAT TRIM IS THIS CAR? WHAT ARE THE SEATS MADE OF?
Can you put cross bars on it?
Nice interior, peppy in stop-and-go traffic, sweet highway ride, to be honest that's all that matters, who cares what it looks like
I should have looked into this over my ford fusion energi
is this available for leasing?
if only the side was wood's it would be nicer, i don't see any downside when they add option of 90's style , but it still nice.
"That engine drone that nobody likes" speak for yourself. Myself and plenty of other people I know love to hear the roar of the engine when they cut loose on the highway
It's not a bad sound at all it's pretty neat sounding
The question, is there any way that the user forces, selects an "EV only" mode, even he hits the pedal to the end the gas engine does not start? So that you can warrant a zero gas consumption mode if your daily range is less than 47 miles?
If you press the "eco" button the car does not turn on its engine as long as you don't go past the "click point" in the petal. Which is easy to do so you stay in EV 24/7 unless there are extream cold demand or if the engine starts for "Maintenance " reasons to keep things lubricated every blue moon.
A quick question. I know that this would never be Tesla quick in terms of Acceleration, but is it `Accord` quick ? I am thinking of getting this over 2018 accord, considering what I get for the price for this car.
We will be reviewing the 2018 Accord Hybrid in early Sept so stay tuned!
It is smart to kick in the gas on the freeway where the electric is probably less efficient. If only it wasn’t ugly outside it is very nice inside.
The PHEV is almost perfect ... and the skirt ? It can be "chopped" short. 😃
You should have spent a day or two in HV mode to test MPG.
@14:22 the complete opposite of a plug hybrid flies by. The irony made me laugh a little.
The design is the best thing about this car. It doesn't look like everything else on the road. Lemmings. It's called original thinking. Considering that blue hair is now not a big deal I'm surprised people are so polarized by the looks of this car.
what a sweetheart
What does that mean 110 E?
745 miles and still 90% left in the tank :^)
idk about having gas in the car for long periods. does it deteriorate over time?
@@jerbsherb4391 it charges.
@@tamiaroshelle1770 I am referring to the gas tank. It's a plugin not a full EV
Jerb Sherb the gas tank is pressurized to help with this but it’s a good point. I just bought one and will be using gas exclusively during the winter and trying to find non ethanol blends
