2019 Honda Insight Touring - 55 MPG Never Looked So Good

  • Honda's pure hybrid offering hasn't had the best luck with American shoppers. Although they were first to market a mass production hybrid in the states, the first and second generation Insight never really won over eco minded buyers. For 2019, Honda is trying a third time with a new premium sedan with styling that will offend very little consumers and the promise of up to 55 MPG. The 2019 Insight is also more powerful then its competition, but only time will tell if American shoppers will ditch their crossover for very stylish new hybrid sedan. It goes on sale on June 29th, 2018.

    Wow! I really like the look of this new current generation Insight! I honestly think this looks more premium and sophisticated than the Civic and possibly even the Accord from some angles. I'm surprised Honda didn't call this vehicle the Civic Hybrid (especially considering all of the design cues it shares with the Civic).
    Nevertheless, in terms of its competitors, the Insight seems like the one to beat. After reviewing the Ioniq HEV recently, I have to say this vehicle seems like it can give that vehicle a pretty good run for its money. As always, from one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work!

      I’m not sure where you see a better interior... unless you’re talking about design, which is subjective. What I saw was a car that used lots of plastic and was extremely loud over expansion joints. In my opinion the Prius Prime is still a better vehicle, looks cooler too.
      Overall if you need a Hybrid, the Camry Hybrid is better than both of these cars. But the Chevy Volt still takes my vote as top Hybrid. Or just get the Bolt over all these cars.

      If most of your driving is in-town, the Volt is still the best option. The Insight and standard Prius still have to kick on their gas engines with regular driving, which means driving it costs more. The only downside to the Volt is that it costs a little more, about $25k after Federal rebate (Some states have ~$2k rebates as well), versus the $23-24k for the Prius and Insight.

    I bought one a few weeks ago and watched this review before I did. The 2019 EX which I've driven for a few weeks is a fun car to drive and I get the advertised mpg. I live in a mountainous region of east Tennessee and when driving up the mountain roads the car is loud and you can hear and feel the engine screaming to maintain the speed limit but it still gets 51 miles to the gallon which is unbelievable. A few friends and family members have checked out the car and everyone is surprised when I tell them it's a hybrid and I get 50+ on the highway and 55+ in town. I'm hoping to see new innovation added to the Insight in the future with a better battery and more power and better efficiency. A plug-in hybrid Insight that got 75 miles per charge in EV mode would be the perfect Honda Insight.

It is missing a few options that would really be nice, like memory seats which really comes in handy when my short wife and I switch around in our Accord. I never use the lumbar, so that wouldn't be missed. Toyota should be concerned as this car will poach a lot of their sales. Actually, Honda should be a bit concerned as this will rob sales from the Accord as this a better looking car too.

    My big brother just showed me this car yesterday. He knows that I am interested in a hybrid car but I don’t like how hatchbacks look (not sure why, but to me they look like “female” cars). The Honda Insight is literally the best looking Hybrid car I have ever seen. It almost looks like a luxury car. It’s definitely at the top of my list now. If you want other good-looking options for a hybrid vehicle, I suggest looking into the Kia Niro (it’s a crossover vehicle) and the Hyundai Ioniq (another hatchback but they recently updated the design so it looks more like a regular sedan). But this Honda Insight definitely takes the cake for me as far as looks and design goes.

    Don't break the shifter! Can regen be turned off completely with the paddle shifters? That is one feature I wish the Prius had since it's more efficient to coast with no regen at all. I have to say, I'm disappointed Honda doesn't offer a plug-in version.
    I'm also a little disappointed they didn't make it a lift-back, but I very much like the styling of this car. I think it's the most attractive Honda right now and more to my taste than the Prius.
    You mention wind noise, it would be disappointing if the Insight isn't significantly quieter than the Prius and Ioniq since you are giving up the practicality of the hatch.

    Thanks for the review.
    I tested the Ionic, and the next day the Insight.
    If you think this car is comparable to the Ionic, this is a whole other level of class. Even though they are similarly priced, this feels and looks Acura like. The Ionic is much more Kia than Hyundai, do you see the relationship?

      @VaunShiz 6 лет назад +1

      Doctor Ferdinand your whole comment falls apart if you look at car sales lol look at the top 10 selling cars of 2017....., yet you use car sales as evidence against his argument. I think you're rather confused

    • @doctorferdinand1003
      @doctorferdinand1003 6 лет назад +2

      It's a shame you strive so vainly to interpret such simple data. First, the data you picked doesn't actually prove the point you seem to think it does since the car in question is a 2018 MY and didn't go on sale until late Q4. 2018 Accord sales are down ~15% from this point in 2017 and it's ceded nearly 12% of market share to the competition, namely the Camry.
      The news is bad for most large sedans, but it's especially bad for the Accord and this should raise some eyebrows for those of us watching Honda bet so much on a diminishing market segment.

    The push button transmission is a no go for me but everything Honda killed it especially the design. Shows you don't need ugly or odd looking design for maximum efficiency.

    • @de89456
      @de89456 6 лет назад +8

      Double JJ you do realize push button start is going to be standard in the next couple years. If your argument is that it’s not reliable, it’s not really valid as most cars have a slot in the car where the fob can be inserted or have a spot where you can touch the fob to which the car can sense.

    • @Eeaotc02
      @Eeaotc02 6 лет назад +1

      David Esposito I really don't see any benefit of it. That's my issue. Yeah it open some space but it's not a huge difference. It's more of a style cue than convenience IMHO. I just prefer a shifter anyday.

    • @Eeaotc02

      Bert Bert Probably. I will say Honda's push button is better than FCA's shifter, Mercedes and even Lincoln's layout.

    • @payrocoin
      @payrocoin 6 лет назад +2

      I definitely see the validity in your comment. If you were to accidentally spill something sticky on those transmission shift selector buttons then it might cause some issues. While I do like the clean look the buttons give I don't think a gear selector knob impedes so much into that space for Honda to have removed it entirely. Maybe someone should make a type of plastic protective cover similar to screen protectors on smartphones.

    Two things, the prius gets over 60mpg and you can drive for extended periods in electric mode......meaning you are using no gas. While the new insight is indeed better looking, the. Prius has a proven record of extreme reliability. I am a uber driver and ive never had single problem. Not a. Fanboy just a realist. By the way. This review doesnt even talk about driving this vehicle in the gas saving electric mode.....a glari ng omission

    • @siopowar
      @siopowar 6 лет назад +3

      mike forte this car also has 30 more hp, almost 100 more torque than the prius, gets 10+ more mpg than their last generation, while having a starter price less than the prius. There's a compromise, so the competition doesn't have to be "which ones better", because they have their differences.

    • @mikeforte991
