I have an '01. Original engine and trans. About 150K miles, not sure because the digital odometer went out years ago, lol. The engine is wearing out, oil pressure light comes on at idle when at temp, but it's been doing that for several years now, and otherwise still gets down the road ok. Those GM 2.2l engines weren't really meant to last this long. I drive it every day, but mostly just short little stop & go trips. Only put about 3.5k miles a year on it, but still change the oil every 6 months. I remember when it was new you'd see Sunfires and Cavs everywhere on the road. Npw I'm all alone out there!

Between my 6 kids and my mom we have owned 4 Pontiac vibe all surpassed 200k without any issues, next daughter driving asked if we could help her get one for her next car because she sees how reliable they are haha
Most of their auto trans came from jadco, which those were obviously garbage lol. And some came from aisin (Toyota) , and those were the more reliable auto options. But the jadco ones really left a bad mark. Manuals were also better options at the time.
Yes, I used to stink at calculus in high school....until I got a teacher who had worked in the Peace Corps in Africa for 5 years. The class was so fun and unintimidating that even the worst students were soon getting A's! The teacher's demeanor can really turn around an entire classroom and even give kids a feeling that they CAN DO MATH even when they thought they never could.
I own a 2021 Mazda 3, bought new. Don't be fooled. The interior is a rattlebox. Rattles and buzzes from the dashboard, glovebox, infotainment screen, seatbelt fastener mechanisms, windows, and door panels. The instrument panel cover is also made of cheap plastic, which scratches so easily you can't clean it with anything but a can of compressed air to clean off the dust. Touch it, and it will get scratched. The exterior paint is very thin too, and scratches very easily. I haven't had any engine or transmission problems over the past 28,000 miles, though.
They're a cheap car they're going to have little rattles but that seems pretty excessive for 28k miles. My 2013 Focus has 400k km and it's not even that bad despite all the hard plastic I'd expect it to be worse
I still own a 323 F, year 2000, 1.5 l with manual transmission, now my daughter, born 2 days, after I got this car, drives it and it works like a charm, not burning up a single drop of oil. Perfect car! Much better made than their succesors the 3 series.
Mazda doesn’t get enough love. We had a 323 that went 200,000+ miles and currently have an 09 6 with 240,000 miles. We wanted to get a new 6 but they’re no longer available in the US. Got an Integra and kept the Mazda as a 3rd car. I drive it once a week into town. Still runs and looks great.
I used to deliver auto parts, and Mazda usually had the least amount of parts going to the dealer. Maybe cause less people own them or something but I figured maybe they were somewhat reliable too. I would definitely consider buying one.
Two different shops I consulted about buying a used said they were good cars BUT, very difficult to get parts when needed. And if the parts are available, they will have to be from a dealer, this being the most expensive.
@@bobullman Yeah, that used to be true because Mazda had lower market penetration aka sales and so distributors carried lower parts inventory. NOW, it has changed significantly as Mazda sales, especially of the CX5 have soared. However, they are more reliable than CRVs or Rav4s so again distributors carry lower inventory levels because they are needed less frequently. But, they are always available and these days the parts turnaround outside of the pandemic era is good. Also, OEM parts are available more than aftermarket but that too is changing. However, since they break down less frequently than other cars it evens out. Also, the largest piece of most repairs these days is labor vs parts for the average repairs. BTW, this is based on both experience with LOTS of cars and about 10 years in the business. 7 Mazdas vs 3 Hondas and 3 Toyotas owned, I have to say that the Mazdas have been more fun to drive and slightly to lots more reliable.
I inherited my 2005 Pontiac vibe with the 1.8L from my grandmother, and it only has 40,000km on it and I got it when it only had 20,000km, runs like a dream and I’ve never had one problem with it, will keep it for years to come!!!
When I was in the Navy I remember buying my first financed car in Virginia, It was an 86 Mazda 323 back in 1991 or 92. It was very important to have a vehicle on that large Naval Station Norfolk, I had a ball back then.
Loved my Mazda 6. Good gas mileage, plenty of power (2.3L is I remember correctly), and sold at 170,000 miles. Unlike my Corolla that blew the engine at 81,000 miles (1.8L if I remember correctly), and had a multitude of issues starting at ~18k miles. Great video as always Scotty.
I'm up to my 9th mazda and I LOVE them! since 1991 (my 1st) they've averaged 250k miles before I move on. granted I only use manual transmission vehicles, (other than my fiance's 2021 CX-5, 82k miles; and my current 6 isport 2018, 42k miles) they're amazing vehicles...... love hearing scotty coming over to the dark side....
@@derekisthematrix I had a 90s era miata 13 years ago. fun car, but not really practical. traded it in for an 02 audi tt roadster. did a stage 3 upgrade and took it from stock 225 hp to 340 hp. still have (and enjoy) the audi.....
I've had Mazdas since 1985. Been very satisfied with them. Had a 1988 626 turbo with manual transmission. Several years later I gave it to my son. Still running well. Eventually the body rusted severely (we live on a dirt road and the fine dust gets everywhere and turns into a water-absorbing muck everywhere). He found another 1988 body with no engine, so he put the turbo into that car. Ran it for some time until he had an accident which ruined the body. The turbo engine, still running well, had 204k on it. That engine was maintained well, with oil changes at about 2800-3000 miles per change. That was a sweet turbo.
My 2009 Vibe 2.4 engine burns 1/2 quart of oil every 1600 miles. I change oil and filter every 3000 miles of 6 months religiously using full synthetic 5 W 30 oil, rather than 0-20 or 5-20 oil. I change the PCV valve every 3 years. No issues.
Note I have purchased 2 new cars in my life out of 55! The last 2 have been Lexus’ ES models, I’m here in Germany and found a 2021 Fsport. Thanks Scotty😂
I have a 2015 and it’s fantastic kind of work I’ve ever had to have on. It was to have the brakes replaced, and that was just regular maintenance. I have that exact car. It’s wonderful.
The '09 Matrix's were the only year that actually had the bad 2.4L to my understanding. Which is what I had: a 2009 Matrix XR w/ the 2.4L. And yes, it burned oil. From what I heard though for the 2010 model year, the piston rings were changed and the problem was fixed for the 2.4L.
I've owned a 07 Pontiac Vibe for 10 years and have put over 120,000 on it. And the odometer is reading at 189,000 currently. Only issue I had was a intake gasket leak at 100,000 and the driver side wheel bearing at 135,000. And with a little help with RUclips I fixed both issues quickly. I definitely will say it is a solid vehicle....
Had a 626 sedan v6 5 speed , paid 1000 from a dealer, What an amazing little car , Almost 30 mpg , Handled like a sports car, the struts ended up in the back window
My 2010 Mazda 6 was made in Dearborn at the ford factory. The 2.5 liter was co engineered and used by ford and Mazda and mercury and Lincoln for years. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned and if the motor blows up I can get another for 1k bucks and run it another 150k. After 15 years I may never get rid of this car . It runs perfectly and I think it’ll be a nice project to keep it going for my son’s first FREE car . Cause I damn sure never got one I didn’t pay for.
I had an auto 323...bulletproof. New they weren't cheap either. In Australia Mazda's are a big name and have been for decades. The series 3 Mazda 3 was the biggest selling car in Australia for a few years.
I had purchased 2 New Mazda Protege in my younger days. I loved those cars. I bought a standard for me and an automatic for my wife. The Mazda 3 was it's replacement but the Protege was an awesome looking car, and we never had any problems with them back then. Mind you, I think we had only kept them for 5 years.
4 speed overdrive transmissions were great. The 4 speed on my 03' Lesabre was still shifting great after 200,000 miles. I did change the transmission fluid every 50,000 miles in that car.
The Mazda3 actually replaced the Protege. I owned the 2003 Protege and ran it to the ground at almost 200K miles. Back in 2016, I replaced the Protege with the 2012 Mazda3 with 35K miles. I still own my Mazda3 and it now has under 80K miles!
We had red 07 Vibe with the 1.8l for probably 10 years now and it's never let us down. The catalytic converters behind the engine at the firewall do seem to fail prematurely. Ours slowly started to leak exhaust into the cabin, a $1,800 repair. Exhaust shop told me he sees them constantly.
I had the same issue in my 2009 Pontiac Vibe 2.4L. Issue was with a gasket and it costed me 150$ at a local mechanic shop to diagnose and fix the leak. Yes, I had to replace the catalytic converter in addition to the above issue. It was the secondary cat, so cut the old one and welded a universal one for another 250$. In my case if I keep 'Recirculate Air Inside' in the AC, then smell won't be noticaeble inside.
I had a 2007 Vibe. It never gave me any issues . Gave it to my son in law . He totaled it with about 190 K miles ! If he did not crack it up, it would still be on the road . Fun fact when we went to toe tow yard to clean out the car . For the fun of it I turned the motor on and guess what ? It started right up even with the front end all smashed in !
As a toyota rav4 owner, and before it I have owned 5 Mazda cars..I can tell you Mazda are far better, good handling, good looking, never any trouble with any of them. Driving Mazda cars for over 30 years.
No problems with my 2008 toyota matrix. Love that the passenger seat folds down flat. I can carry 8 foot lumber inside and i can sleep in it when camping. Would have liked if it had higher clearance.
Just got my Toyota Corolla Hatchback Hybrid 1.8 here in Germany. Almost new with 40k km from 2020 for 18k€. Such a great deal here. My 14y old VW Polo with 220k km is now being retired, I am sure I can sell it for 2k.
I have a 2010 ranger bought it used and I have 215k miles on it now. Never had any big problems. I’ve replaced the spark plugs, fuel filter, and that’s it. Hopefully it keeps up
Scotty, I’m original owner of 2015 Dodge Dart SXT 2.4 liters with 6-speed auto OD it has 361,000 miles with of course my original transmission went out on 342,700 miles got another Tran and it still running
Great video. I was a mechanic for 15 years and never thought I'd ever hear anyone recommend a Pontiac. Every single one that i worked on was a POS. My God. It's no secret that GM made junky cars but it seems that they saved their worse for Pontiac. Anyway, this is cool info.
I purchased a used Mazda 3 and would say mechanically it is worth it. The unfortunate part is the dashboard is melting. It feels like glue. Mazda had a recall on the dashboards and the previous owner did not take advantage to have it replaced during the time frame required in the recall.. So now, it would cost over $1k to have it replaced. I purchased a mat that goes over it so we don't have the tacky surface exposed. But, it still produces a vapor that sticks to the windshield and it takes solvents to clean the inside of the front windshield and remove the fogginess. If it wasn't for this, I would say it is a great car.
I wish Scotty sticks to how to fix cars and mechanical stuff helping us solve problems with vehicles and leave everything else alone . He is interesting when he talks about how to fix cars...at least that is why I am waiting.
2005 Mazda Tribute 198K bought new only replaced the center instrument cluster under warranty. 2013 Mazda3 189k bought new replaced the AC blower motor So only $800 spent on non maintenance items. Only complaint is some of the Interior parts and seats quality are a little cheap.
👉👉 Had a 2005 Pontiac Vibe last year. Family hand-me-down, drove it for about a year. Loved it BUT one thing that Scotty did not mention is that the transmission build quality SUCKS in many of them. Ours ended up going out slowly and died at 180,000 miles. 😢
I had a 2004 Pontiac Vibe that threw a rod, the transmission was still working. They were very common at one time, now you rarely see one. I will never buy a cheap Toyota again. Mine had 139,000 miles on it. It had the 1.8 liter engine.
bro it's so easy to drain the transmission fluid on Vibes, just a hex wrench plug underneath. I got a Vibe with 184k on it, risked a drain and fill, and it still shifts smooth at 235k
@BearfootBob That wouldn't do a thing for the engine. That car was OK for around town. On the highway at a mile high altitude, (Rio Rancho, NM), it was way underpowered. It spent most of its short life in second gear. I took it to Wheeler Peak once, and people were honking at me with the pedal on the floor in second gear. The same problem occurred when driving up to Los Alamos.
@@karllued checking transmission fluid level and changing it out at 180,000 wouldn't help the transmission in any way? Ok man. I'll work on my car, you work on yours. Mine shifts perfectly and just past 236,000 mi
We talking always about what car brand is good or bad. I think we turning about the real point. Any car is good if you don’t race it. I saw the mechanic twice in 20 years except for services. It was for two clutches because the first one was fitted wrongly. 432.000 km with an humble Peugeot 307. I think good driving is the point.
My first vehicle was a 1992 Mazda 323 Hatchback, 5 speed. I need to hunt one down and buy another one. Loved that car! It was so much fun. You could swap the 2.5 from the 626 or the Probe enigne into it and it was a sleepin screamer =D
I drove a 1998 Chrysler Sebring, and it ran forever hardly any problems at all. In fact, none other than spark plug replacement. Then I realized the first generations were made with Mitsubishi engines. And then the generations after that were made by Chrysler and they were absolute crap.
Like this Mazda 3, my old type. Now a new car only sold less than 15000 US dollars in China. And you can also negotiate some discounts. But still very few people buy.
Very pretty as sedan in germany are station wagon more popular the Mazda 3. This also the reason why toyota stop to sell the Camry in germany from New since 2021. greetings from Germany Scotty
Hi, I’ve just found your channel just in time too… we purchased a 2017 Ford Escape and have had nothing but problems with it along with two recalls for transmission issues. I’m currently looking for a car that’s reliable and that can fit a small wheelchair in the trunk. All the used cars are about 20,000-25,000 so I’ve been researching throughly.
Been following you for years. Love the info you share. BUT, please have someone else hold the camera for you. I get dizzy watching your videos !!!! LOL
When i was in US, I found only luxury cars were worthy to buy. Middle range to low range cars were much more expensive than in China. Now as EV and hybrid will rule the market, I strongly suggest American consumers to look at Tesla, BYD, Tanks... These cars are the future.
My 1996 Pontiac Grand AM GT that is now 28 years old still has a pretty descent looking paint Job where it's the original factory paint. Unfortunately in 2000 I was T-boned and the paint job from that finally has failed about 6 year's ago from being out in the Weather and a neighbor constantly watering that side of my car when they watered their tiny yard in front.
I wish you not tell people about the Mazda 3. That is my under the rader car that is so cheap used, that I plan to buy one. Now you just made them more valuable to car dealerships since people will be flocking to buying them. So now the price will go up. :(
The Vibes are great, but beware of part-finding difficulty. I bought a used 2010 Vibe several years ago and it has been great until recently. Recent repairs have been difficult to get parts for, but I've always managed-until now. Now the PCM is out and I can't get one. I'm without a car and haven't yet found an exact part match through any sites, salvage yards, etc.
Scottie, you might want to get a GoPro or some camera you can clip to your shirt pocket. Sooner or later some cop will see you driving while recording with your phone in your hand
I have a 2006 Vibe I bought used 13 years ago. It’s comfortable, gets great mileage, still looks like new, and it has the 5 speed stick and literally goes like stink
@@robertt9342 Yes. It was a joint project between GM and Toyota and built in California. It has the Made in Japan engine and transmission and a lot of Toyota parts with a few GM parts added and a different exterior body style but the interior is exactly the same. I had to replace my battery about 4 years ago, it still had the original battery from Japan
we had a mazda 929 when i was a kid. the transmission went out in it. The transmission was a total piece of junk. we took it to a transmission shop to have it rebuilt. it didn't make it home after the rebuild.

God bless Scotty ❤
That's good one 😂👍
Maybe it’s what’s in his coffee
Scotty, you have a very unique delivery, every teacher should be as enthusiastic as you. Every kid would get an "A".
How can you not love this guy ?! Fantastic!
It's the engine that matters
As long as the transmission doesn't break 👍
I have a 2016 Mazda 3 with almost 80k miles. Still rides like new. It does scratch easy when cleaning though.
@@duckling4393 Sure...while the remaining parts of the car disintegrate all around it!
Finally, Scotty! You're opening your mind to other brands!!!
Thanks Scotty for all you do and the info you provide. We viewers appreciate you!!
I inherited my 2005 Pontiac vibe with the 1.8L from my grandmother, and it only has 40,000km on it and I got it when it only had 20,000km, runs like a dream and I’ve never had one problem with it, will keep it for years to come!!!
Just got a corrola SR 2.0 D-4D 2007...42000 miles.. bullet proof and 50mpg
My mom had Mazda 323 as her first car, pretty good apart from the rust issues it was later scrapped due to the amount of rust problems
If you haven't already, try the MX-5. You'll be hooked for life. Pretty cheap used for a fun, 2nd vehicle if you don't want to commute in it.
@@derekisthematrix I had a 90s era miata 13 years ago. fun car, but not really practical. traded it in for an 02 audi tt roadster. did a stage 3 upgrade and took it from stock 225 hp to 340 hp. still have (and enjoy) the audi.....
230,000 miles on a 2006 Matrix 4WD...still runs perfect.
I change oil and filter every 3000 miles of 6 months religiously
using full synthetic 5 W 30 oil, rather than 0-20 or 5-20 oil.
I change the PCV valve every 3 years.
No issues.
Yeah the later stuff changed, find a 04 vs your 09 and see the difference, NO oil BURN!
Note I have purchased 2 new cars in my life out of 55! The last 2 have been Lexus’ ES models, I’m here in Germany and found a 2021 Fsport. Thanks Scotty😂
Buick Lesabre, Park Avenue, Lacrosse, Pontiac Bonneville basically anything with a GM 3800 V6
Yep.
I had the Bonneville.
Folks had a park avenue.
They were both outstanding.
They bought a celebrity(? Or something??, ) gm w/ 3.8 & it was junk!
The 3800s in GM cars were all Buick engines.
@@jupitercyclops6521 The Celebrity's had a 2.8.
@@jupitercyclops6521 My ‘99 park Avenue was bulletproof and I practically gave it away for some dumb reason.

Somehow, Scotty would use his feet, hips, eyes, tongue, and ears
I'm concerned that you have a bondage fetish.
Correct. '07 and '08 were the best years of the Vibe/Matrix/Corolla. Only trouble is they don't last in the rust belt (very few cars do)
I've owned a 07 Pontiac Vibe for 10 years and have put over 120,000 on it. And the odometer is reading at 189,000 currently. Only issue I had was a intake gasket leak at 100,000 and the driver side wheel bearing at 135,000. And with a little help with RUclips I fixed both issues quickly. I definitely will say it is a solid vehicle....
Had a 626 sedan v6 5 speed , paid 1000 from a dealer, What an amazing little car , Almost 30 mpg ,
Handled like a sports car, the struts ended up in the back window
I bought a 323 new in 1990.
1588 cc manual.
I still use the car today.
Bought my 2014 Mazda 3 last September and so far I love it! Sensible and smart change from the Ford Focus I had.
I had a 323. '91 model as I recall. 4 speed manual trans. Put over 200k on that little car. No repairs other than wear parts.
Love your work my brother, but never giving up my 2009 Honda 2dr Accord V6. Over 200k miles and still powerful and silent.
Love my ‘08 Corolla 1.8L
It runs great and runs perfect everyday I head to work.
I maintain it like a fanatic, expect many, many miles.
How many miles on it?
@@chrispeveler1578 130k miles. I maintain it like a fanatic
Same issue with my 08, the most expensive repair I’ve done on it. At 203k miles strong now
I had a 2007 Vibe.
Curious to know why you didn't buy another Mazda ?
5 madza's vs my 1 Pontiac vibe! hum🤔
Really better how? What do they have that's as good as the RAV4?
2006 Mazda 3. 240k still runs like a champ and still fun to drive
Better interiors and standard equipment on base models for one.. @@patfraser3869
The vibe was a great car but our 2009 had problems with the air bag systems and no one will fix it
No problems with my 2008 toyota matrix.
The 'TOYOTA' tax in the automotive world is as real as the 'MARANTZ' tax is in the audiophile world.
Vibe all the way for a daily driver. I have one that I use to wrack up the daily miles and allows me to put less miles on my other vehicle.
My es350 is named the Flying Carpet
I love it!
2013 Mazda3 189k bought new replaced the AC blower motor
So only $800 spent on non maintenance items.
Only complaint is some of the Interior parts and seats quality are a little cheap.
Hes finally talking about my car 2013 lexus es 350 great car.
I own a 2010 Mazda 3 and still run perfectly
I believe you sir.. image of cars determine the cost
In Nigeria the Kia,Hyundai,Honda cost alot less than the Toyota brand
We talking always about what car brand is good or bad. I think we turning about the real point.
Any car is good if you don’t race it. I saw the mechanic twice in 20 years except for services. It was for two clutches because the first one was fitted wrongly. 432.000 km with an humble Peugeot 307. I think good driving is the point.
I have an 05 Pontiac Vibe and I absolutely love it. 168k miles and no issues with the engine or transmission.
My first vehicle was a 1992 Mazda 323 Hatchback, 5 speed.
I need to hunt one down and buy another one. Loved that car! It was so much fun. You could swap the 2.5 from the 626 or the Probe enigne into it and it was a sleepin screamer =D
Just bought an ES350 2008, top of the line, with 170 k miles.
those old protégé’s would run forever
4:43 to 4:46 …Mazda made the right move joining with Toyota
Scotty, please keep up with your work and keep on going strong. God bless you sir 🙏😇🙏😇.
Scotty is the Apocalypse Now Dennis Hopper of the car world
Very pretty as sedan in germany are station wagon more popular the Mazda 3.
All the used cars are about 20,000-25,000 so
I’ve been researching throughly.
Evs and hybreds are sooooo over rated😂
That Vibe is in oristine condition! Aside of being a rebadged Toyota, one feature I like is the 110v outlet. I think Matrix doesn't have that.
My 2016 Mazda 3 1.5 diesel always gives 70+mpg. It's brilliant to drive. Prefer it to the newer model.....and.....made in Japan.
Mazda, very uberated car! Have had my mx5 mk2 for 22 years. Lovely car.
I don't live in america but i wish you had a twin here. I've had four cars since i was 16 and I'm 61. I love Toyotas.
I have a 2014 Mazda 3 hatchback. The only issue I had recently was an emissions system problem.
I have a 2014 corrola I get 37 mpg on the highway I love it
Scotty you’re the best !!!!!
I wish you not tell people about the Mazda 3. That is my under the rader car that is so cheap used, that I plan to buy one. Now you just made them more valuable to car dealerships since people will be flocking to buying them. So now the price will go up. :(
A Vibe with 80k miles in that shape a lot would want about $13k or more.
I got my moneys worth for my 2020 base 3 hatch. It’s brilliant and economic.
Isn’t the vibe a Toyota Matrix?
@@robertt9342 Yes. It was a joint project between GM and Toyota and built in California. It has the Made in Japan engine and transmission and a lot of Toyota parts with a few GM parts added and a different exterior body style but the interior is exactly the same. The one thing I could not care less about is MPG. I want reliability and low maintenance.
I always felt those p9ntiac Vibes had a little extra over the Matrixes.
Nicer colors more options in them.

we had a mazda 929 when i was a kid. the transmission went out in it. The transmission was a total piece of junk. we took it to a transmission shop to have it rebuilt. it didn't make it home after the rebuild.
If you have to look at your windshield to know that you are approaching a stop sign. You shouldnt be driving
