2019/2020 Honda Insight Pros & Cons after 26,000 miles- Long Term Review

- 2019/2020 Honda Insight Pros & Cons after 26,000 miles Review. Having driven this vehicle for many miles I can attest to the good and bad of the vehicle.
Pros
1. Slick design and nice looks
2. LED Headlights/Daytime/Tail Lights standard
3. Active Safety Features as standard on Entry Trim
4. Michelin Eco Tires for less noise and great MPG, and no hubcaps!
Cons
1. Build quality is low. Trims and alignment on panels are off. Very different compared to Toyota, which has very high build quality.
2. Very low to the ground. Getting in and out of the car is a hassle and becomes tiresome after some time.
3. Paint scratches easily.
4. Active Safety Features need some more tuning since they can be off in terms of accuracy.

Just purchased a 2022 insight touring last year and Im still impressed with it. No gap issues or lane keep assist issues. 2019 was the first model yr so maybe Honda worked out quality issues by 22. It’s low but I realized that when I took it for a test drive and I can live with it, kind of adds to the sporty look which is a plus for a hybrid. Great mpg’s especially now with gas being so high! I love it..
I agree! Glad they fixed the issues. Prob alot of folks spoke up on the issues and they got that feedback to improve the years later.
@@JohnnyKReviewsCan they push out updates for lane assist and acc over the air? Do you think it's better now, or is it still the same as your original review? Thanks for the great video!!
@Travisneedham1 they can a update for sure but that's a lot of work and time (in their eyes). And it's not OTA. So most likely I don't see it happening
I agree with all the cons, but if you are on a budget, and you want a reliable alternative to a Prius (& personally, I much prefer this to a Prius) I would say my EX trim is a fantastic hybrid, value wise. For me, value (what you get for what you pay for) makes me happy with my decision. Ultimately, if my 2020 EX remains reliable over time, as Honda's generally do, and if the battery holds up for a long time, I have no regrets.
Al F I’m the same way. The battery in the Prius and Honda are both lithium ion, which are light weight and hold more energy. Only issue is the very cold temps. The nickel hydride batteries are better in that spec. Overall their both great
$30000 for the touring model is not cheap by any means.
@@z1az285 Back in 2019 they were way cheaper
@@SIIKAP1 Yeah, I'm aware 😁 unfortunately but my car was working fine then and was until this year, so just bad timing for me I guess
@@z1az285 don’t worry. I sold my car before prices went crazy, and need to buy a car now and have to overpay with these inflated prices too
Dude… you’re being wayyy too picky. I totally disagree with the build quality. I have owned both Honda and Toyota and I have done lots of researching. I will only buy Honda. Both Honda and Toyota use less paint to paint there cars making less coats. Honda hits home where it counts. I have NEVER been stranded in a Honda for any reason other than once of my own. I drove many Prius and the insight and I would pick Honda hands down any day of the week. I cannot stomach the looks of the Prius. You’ll never convince me otherwise. I had a crv with over a quarter of a million miles on it and still running to this day. I sold it and the person who bought it is still driving it right now. My parents have an accord with over 200k miles on it and I would drive it to the moon and back
After watching your review, I checked the build-quality issues you spent time critiquing. I own a 2020 Insight, made in March '20 by Honda in Indiana, and I don't have any of those problems. All seams are uniform throughout, no interior mis-fits either. Sorry to hear your car is not up-to-snuff. Yes, it is low to the ground and ingress is a bit of a struggle, but manageable.
Glad you don't have the same problems me and others do. They may have corrected the issue within the manufacturing assembly line.
Here's a video I recorded of another Insight EX trim with the same issues:
ruclips.net/video/kzQXDRkeO_c/видео.html
I bought a 2022 Honda Insight EX. Adaptive Cruise Control works perfect and Lane Assist is decent. I checked the build quality on these as I was shopping for one. All the gaps and trims line up now. I wouldn’t have purchased one that didn’t. I’ve owned cars lower than this so I never have had issues getting in and out of this. Con for me is the flimsy trunk floor. The car is great otherwise and mine came with a lifetime powertrain warranty at no extra cost.
Yes after the 2nd year the fix all the bugs and misalignment. Glad you're having fun with your insight! How much did you pay for yours? Heard prices are quite high now
@@JohnnyKReviews I bought mine in Fresno California. They had a dealer markup of $2,000 which I talked down to $0. I compromised by getting $1,200 in safety add-ons. It still was the best deal within a 5 hour drive from me. Other dealers had it marked up $6,000 and wouldn’t budge below a $4000 markup.
@@timterrell8678 yeah there's a lot of markups over msrp these days. My friend paid for a EX $28k out the door. Is that how much you paid as well? He lives in Texas
@@JohnnyKReviews MSRP on the EX is $25,210 plus $1,015 destination charge, Honda also charges $395 for premium paint colors. DMV taxes $2,662. That is $29,282 just for MSRP with taxes. I doubt your friend paid under MSRP.
@@timterrell8678 oh okay not too far off the $29k. How is it taxed in California for purchasing a vehicle? Is it a yearly tax amount based upon the purchase price of vehicle?
I have the 2021 EX, some of those gaps are still present. The lane keep/safety suite is pretty good now though.
You're saving a lot of $ w/ your prius and insight!
My biggest complaint is the fit and finish of my 18 accord. Fender gaps are all over the place! Hondas QA dept mist have gone on strike
Purchased a 2020 Honda Insight in February of this year, and noticed alignment is off on driver side door, as well as the gas tanks lid. It also sticks out like a sore thumb. I also have vibration inside the car and I'm only 3500 miles in. You're right about interior being cheaply assembled. I'm beginning to regret my purchase for these reasons. Only positive is the savings in gasoline and hopefully reliability.
Glad I wasen't the only person with the same issues. Noticed many others with the build quality issues as well. The Engine is built in Japan, so in terms of that, it should be very reliable. I'm now going into 35,000 miles. I drive it like a baby, but noticed MPG has gone down. Before I was getting 55 MPG, now it's around 45 MPG. And I've got the LX model. Most of my driving is city.
@@JohnnyKReviews My Insight touring model has absolutely no build issues whatsoever that you have on your Insight. That was shocking to see to say the least. Mine was assembled in the Indiana plant.... maybe yours was assembled first thing on a Monday morning when everyone still had the weekend on their minds while assembling your car.
@RickReviews yeah you need to pump the air higher than normal.
It’s a really good looking car I never thought I would say “I love looking at my hybrid”
Agree!
I’m 6’2” and checking out the car. Fitting is number one for me.
The old two seater insight had plenty of room
Itll be tight for you. I'm 5'10" and have the seat pushed back all the way. Let me know how you feel though
@@JohnnyKReviews This is a big issue with either Hondas or Toyotas that I've been in.
I'll check it anyway and then check the prius.
I've driven my mother in laws Lexus. Those are the worst. My wife's Rav4 is more comfortable
@@beebob1279 agree 100%! They’ve really differentiated the sedan and subcompact suv offerings. Hate it’s so low to the ground, getting in and out is hard.
@@beebob1279 how’d you end up fitting? I’m 6’2 as well and am looking into these soon
@@peteharmon3090 I did not fit in the Honda. Plus it's close to the ground.
I ended up with the Prius Prime instead and there's plenty of room for my legs and a good four inches to the roof over my head.
I plug in the car when I get home from work and it's ready then next day.
Actually, it's a technological marvel to me.
I've got 1800 miles on it now. I've filled the gas tank two times which is about 10 gallons.
Agree with your pros and cons. I have a 2019 EX and still love it but there is a quality gap between Honda USA and Honda Japan or Toyota Japan. My son drives a 2015 Toyota Corrola and the fit and finish is so much better than my Insight. I've often wondered if the quality control is off because it's a new model and if they'll get better with future Insight models? I chose the Insight because it had so much more power and a better ride than the Prius plus it's a better looking hybrid automobile. My next hybrid will be a Honda CR-V, hopefully fit and finish will be better.
Mark Stephan agree with your statements. The Prius is built fully in Japan. Whereas the Honda Insights Engine is from japan but the vehicle itself is built in America. Usually with production lines on a new generation, it takes 1-2 years for them to correct any issues. So the 2021 Insight will be corrected hopefully in terms of quality. The prime is a amazing plug in, great MPG and all electric capability. Issue is, it’s much much heavier than the regular Prius and the Insight. So that is the reason why you’re able to go faster than the prime. The regular Prius and Insight through are spot on I think in terms of speed and off the line.
@@JohnnyKReviews The Insight despite some issues is still faster and better looking than the Prius and cheaper too.
@@JohnnyKReviews Good information. My next vehicle will be a plug-in, would love to go EV but I'm waiting for the infrastructure and vehicle cost to get better. The Honda Insight generation 3 is an example of the good, the bad and the ugly with it being 97% good imo.
Excellent points you have. The body panel gaps are off quite a bit on mine too. My passenger door was off kilter also and the honda body shop literally leaned on the edge to straighten it out. Looks pretty straight now. You're still under warranty so you should go make them fix the door like I did. The knee scraping on the center console is classic! You are 100% right and I'm going to figure a hack for that someday. Lane centering works very well on expressways, but like you said, it doesn't see lines on the road nearly as well as it should. Can't tell you how many times I'm driving 45mph on maine back roads and the lines are straight and clear yet the car keeps losing track. On the expressway it's nearly bulletproof.
Concerning our disagreement on replacing the head unit. The touring and EX head units are completely different than the LX head unit. Looks like you were able to do some changes to yours, but as far as I have been able to learn, the touring head unit is not currently replaceable. It also runs on a variant of Android 6 as well, but then again since it's basically a pre-built OS, I'm not surprised Honda would use it to build their top end on it. Take care Verdier400@gmail.com
Verdier 400 agree on the build quality. Toyota’s have not had that problem and neither the Honda’s from back in the day since my family has had a Cr-V/Civic and accord pre 2010.
As for headunit I really hate mine due to the size. Reached out to 10 different aftermarket headunit companies mostly all in China, and they won’t work from what they said. Removed the headunit to see the double din size, and it might work on one or two I found.
Or I can use the touring headunit I found on eBay for $250. 8” screen but the aftermarket are much larger and you can use a ton more features to customize.
Going to buy rubber mats soon for it as you suggested for civic mats on amazon. Speakers aren’t too bad.
Road noise though I forgot to mention in the back seat is very high. Active noise cancellation is decent on keeping things low in terms of noise, but it’s decent not Accord quiet
Video is back up!
I have a 2022 lx and build quality is horrendous as well. None of the doors have a similar gap and the rocker panels are unaligned. In the interior there is a dash rattle from day one and the ac blower has a slight rattle.
My 2017 Acura MDX is the opposite. Even a little swirl the system will nudge me back. Very annoying.
l own a 2019 Insight and l put 60,000 miles on it and never had any problem.
It's a great car for sure
No your right my 2020 Honda Insight the panels are not aligned. When I get on the high way the hood on my Honda looks like it is gonna pop up!
the hood is really light and the air is meant to buffer into the engine bay to cool the engine.
I got the 2018 Honda Accord 1.5T and I love it.
Yeah heard the Accord is much faster in pickup. MPG is lower but not by much.
ex and touring are better by far! touring has leather as well.
Yeah they're great. Price point is much higher, and would go for the Camry Hybrid Personally at that point
I have 33k miles with no build quality issues. For a hybrid car, Honda insight is revolutionary fantastic. Equal to tesla and I have both. Truly this is an outstanding vehical.
I agree on the engine being great! What year is your insight?
@@JohnnyKReviews 2019 purchased new in 2020 because no one wanted to pay for the touring model. I guess they just didn't get how great the car and technology is. Toyota still can match it and ford, forget about it. We have ford hybrid GOV.s they always break down and sound terrible. I don't know why our government waist our tax money on such junk made in mexico ford. 33 mpg at best in the summer.
@@mahealanihawaii9830 Toyota has now caught up and surpassed it as of recently. Most of the tech is from one supplier, the auto makers just buy from them and pass the charge onto the consumer
@@JohnnyKReviews I took the new prius for a test drive. It was slow, small, not impressive. The new body is cool looking but it seemed to be wrapped around the same old prius from 10 years ago. Toyota makes a great product but they still have rust problems. Also all the dealers around here say they can order a new prius the way you want. Only 2022 were available. I think tesla will kill all hybrids though.
I love your cars, perfect combination
MPG 🤴 👑
So far I listen to 5 minutes of your complaints without one valuable comment about the car. When you bought it it probably had those gaps and the plastic piece for your knee rubs. I was hoping to hear a review about the car how it drives the responsiveness the gas mileage excetera. It's an inexpensive car so there are going to be some issues with upholstery Etc not that that's bad but it's to be expected
Thats right, first 5 minutes is like that. Keep on listening to get the full review on the other questions
I have an Acura and the line departure assents is not Accurate either 🙏
Thanks for the review!
Thank you for your comment and like!
About to pick up a 22 w/ 46k miles tomorrow. Pre-planning for kids starting to drive. GL me.
You should be fine. Just do the regular checks as a gas vehicle and you'll be good. It's a great car
How's the car handling now? I'm thinking of buying this car in Seattle, probably getting the EX trim since I really want Android Auto
Thomas Tay alittle more nosier in the interior. Don’t know why but just imo.
Its dope bro go for it. I recommend getting the touring model and just buying a year or two old with low mileage. Best bang for the buck. The cons he mentioned vary from person to person car to car. I've had two of these cars so far and the first car I had did have the gaps and unevenness but the second didn't. Also I never had an issue getting in and out of the car, never had to hold on to anything to get out of the car. You can also lower and highten your seat to assist.
The con of being low is a pro for my 10 year old husky hopping in the back :). Old man doesn't like jumping into the SUV anymore 😂 great review video.
Yeah I guess if you look at it that way :)
Test driving one in 2 weeks which I am sure is much better than a 2009 subaru legacy with minimal power and 25mpg . I drive 500 miles a week and I love honds cars so I'm sure it will be just fine
It’s def a great vehicle! They’ve also improved the issues I spoke upon on the 2022 year
Thank you I also ordered a 22 acura integra and just found out sticker will be about 37k and running super unleaded over 5 dollars I have reevaluated to something cheaper and more economical oh well
@@jeffreymadia1725 it’s based on the same platform as the insight. The insight is truly king in my opinion overall value. Integra is great too, alittle too much imo
I hear a Slight Persian accent, am I right?
Cons ~ 1. Ride height = aerodynamics. 2. ACC is a pain, I agree but you can bypass it with the use of regular cruise control. 3. Agree with the hard plastic, I use a small cushion that takes care of it. 4. The cloth is thin and shows dirt easily, have to live with it. 5. My Insight has good build and fit and finish in the interior but like your car it is an issue for some. 6. The plastic piece just snaps into place, easy fix. 7. Body fit and finish, I think the base model has a problem with this but other Insight owners on the Gen3Insight forum also point this out. 8. Honda's made in Japan are much nicer than Honda's made in the USA. Pros ~ Agree with your comments.
Mark Stephan thanks! Hopefully Honda takes these issues and concerns, and corrects them for the upcoming years or next generation!
@@JohnnyKReviews Agree 100%, I love my Honda Insight and it can be approved but I can't argue with my 63.6 mpg daily commute during the cold east Tennessee winter. Make it a better car and it'll generate more sales and better market shares! Honda needs to advertise the Insight. Everyone thinks I'm driving an Accord :-).
I have the same interior vents on my 2016 Civic and they are popping up.
Is there a way to show your speed as a digital number, not as an analog sweep style gauge?
Daryl Hurlbut yes you’re able to do that. It’s a personal preference
Thank you.
I have a new 2020 insight ex how do you switch it to a digital readout
@@chevis26 apparently you can't. Mine will only show KPH. No MPH available. Looks like we're both on the short end of the srick for this. I own a 2019 Insight EX. There is no way to display a digital speedometer with MPH. I hope Honda sends out an update for this. Seems like a pretty idiotic thing to do for a car that is sold in the USA. If anyone out there can show me a fix, please do so. I followed the instructions in the manual and it will either display KPH or nothing. There is no option for MPH. Honda.....you can do better than this. Very disappointing.
Have you looked into the comma ai software that will make the car drive itself like the autopilot in telsa im thinking about trying it
This honda insight is made in Indiana USA thats why the exterior design is not precise just like my mdx 2016
I definitely question the build quality issues in this review. We have a 2019 Insight with 24,000 miles on it and the build quality is outstanding. It looks to me like this one has been wrecked in the front end and the body shop did a shoddy job fixing it. You show no similar issues on the back half of the car which also leads me to believe it's not a build issue. I also have a 2014 Honda Odyssey with 119,000 miles on it and it has excellent build quality. I would put both them up against a Toyota any day of the week. The Odyssey has been almost flawless up to this point. We absolutely love the Insight and I would recommend it to anyone. Our only complaints is the gas mileage a little lower than expected and the engine can be loud and revvy at times. My wife and I do have some lead foots though.
It's a first year model. Have attached a video I had done of another insight with the same issues. Being the first and only owner with 5 miles on the odometer don't think it was a wreck.
ruclips.net/video/kzQXDRkeO_c/видео.html
Ours is a first year model as well without any of the build quality issues.
@@brianswafford3471 yeah I guess it can't be 100% of insights but a fair majority of them have had issues. You got lucky :)
More than half way in and was waiting to see if there were any pros 😒
Very helpful
Are the reverse lights and license plate lights LED? I’m really contemplating getting a 2020 soon with the sport black styling package and I think just subtle white LED reverse and license plate lights would set the car off
byu license plate lights are led from the looks of it. Reverse light not sure and will need to check. If not, it can be easily swapped out for cheap. Led lights off amazon you can get really cheap, just have to make sure they match your vehicle.
Honda has made it difficult to change many items from the LX to higher trims. Example: the headunit for LX I bought a EX headunit which is larger. You can not use due to wiring etc.

John K I'll try again next week. Thank you for responding! 👍🏻 Oh, Any chance they blocked it due to any potential music? One thought.
lockergr no music on the video. If you find out anything on other people having the same issue please let me know. RUclipss customer service is nonexistent
John K That's too bad. I guess if you get no response you would just maybe have to re-upload it. I've never actually seen this notice before in all my years on RUclips. I usually see the "This video is not available in your country" notice.
Video is back up!
this model is terrible compared to the touring. I dont blame you, bad on hondas end.
I love how all your complaints are complaining about buying a economy car in the lowest trim. The honda safety stuff is weird because most other long terms reviews say it works great, maybe you should get that checked out. And I can't defend the build quality, but again I find that weird since very few other videos I've seen have mentioned it (although maybe the other reviews just didn't notice or care as much as you do).
But seriously, if you're just going to complain about buying an economy car at the cheapest trim, just save up and buy a more luxurious car or buy this in a better trim. Not saying this is a bad video to be clear. I just hate when people complain about cheap materials in a cheap car. It's cheap for a reason is all I'm saying.
I would classify this higher than a economy car. A Civic we could state that, but regardless in today’s world with so many great options and competition I believe there should be ways to improve.
Without honest reviews and everything being fine, I believe is a dis-service to others.
From your comment stating it being negative during the whole video, believe you should go through it again. There’s a lot of positives about the vehicle which I brought up. Wouldent have purchased the vehicle if I didn’t feel it wasent good and all negative ;-)
I'm looking at purchasing the 2022 Insight EX or Touring. Any thoughts on the quality of that year?
Great quality for the 2022, you'd love it! They're cutting back though on production so I would be quick
I am about to go check one out this week. A 2022 Honda insight EX, 18k miles for 23k, I’m trying to have $7,000 down payment so I can have decent payments on it. I’m excited. My friend has a 2019 Honda insight, she bought it brand new, she drives a lot for work so she’s got over 200k miles on it but it’s still running like a charm!
If you're comparing a $50000 car versus a $22000 car of course the bill quality is going to be better you're paying double more than double.
Which car is $50k?
@Adam Marsh yeah I didn't compare it to a Lexus. The Lexus is amazing though. Which hybrid you got ES, CT RX etc?
$23,00.00 You get what you pay for and honestly I would not pay a penny more.
All the prius are built and assembled in japan which is why the Quality is much better, the Japanese takes bride in everything they make. i cant even consider Honda a Japanese car anymore here in the u.s consider all their cars are built in foreign countries.
We couldn't understand European American workforce, just slow and expensive.
what are you talking about - there are some Hondas made in Japan
@@MontyGumby most of them aren't not in the u.s
@@cloudies3671 BTW I just got the 2020 Corolla Hybrid - built in Japan. This is the major factor I chose it over Insight (made in Indiana, ha!) and Hyundai Ioniq
Cherubino the quality control it’s just different. Not saying insights aren’t built well.
Did you find that your range increased over time? My range hovers around 298, but when I purchased my insight it was around 400
I've had my 2019 Insight Touring for 2 years now and my range has actually increased quite a bit. Maybe one of the reasons is I learned how to use to the paddle shifts when braking or slowing down. I just learned several little tricks/driving style that increases my mpg. I've gotten as high as 900 kilometers several times during the spring & summer months. I also always drive in ECO mode which helps a lot as I didn't buy a hybrid to race anyone or out-accelerate anyone also.
Raven Jones it’s actually decreased over time. Now at 35,000 miles. I might have the highest mile Insight out there. From experience having Eco mode, and city driving, with inflated tires. Your range is pretty low though. I would check the PSI of tires and how you’re driving the vehicle? Do you press hard on the pedal etc
I’ve got up to 555 miles range with one tank and my 2019 insight is at 53k miles already. I pushed it on this try tho since I drove 35 mile after I hit 0 miles left
@@STRIKEORSUBMIT LOL you really did push it, I would've been so nervous. I'm thinking about buying an insight and your comment alone may have convinced me. You people are getting some serious mileage out of the car!
@@STRIKEORSUBMIT Hi! I recently bought a 2020 Honda Insight and I’ve been wondering how to increase my range! Right now it typically maxes out at 425 miles but I want to get and get it higher, any tips you can give me?
I'm having issues with my 2019 EX Honda Insight bottoming out really easy hitting the skid plate. Anyone else noticing shock issues. Mine has 40,000 miles on it.
It's a low vehicle in general. Mine always hit the skid plate when new. At 40k bottoming out is uncommon and depends on what potholes you drove on etc. I have roughly 50k miles on mine now without that issue
@@JohnnyKReviews It happens on quick dips like coming off bridges where you hit bumps or dips. It's like the shocks are not stiff enough up front.
I have a 2021 insight with 25k miles. Im smelling a faint burnt smell. Has anybody experienced the same issue. Drives great no issues
Weird indeed. Oil burning smell or tire burnt?
@JohnnyKReviews sort of neither. More like burnt plastic. I'll have to let it warm up and pop the hood to see what it might be.
@jaimerios995 yes I'd check it out since it should be the case
It’s not gonna be perfect as far as like panel gap goes. You mentioned Toyota quality is better will, I used to own a 2018 Camry and the left taillight has a giant gap on 1 side. The sunglasses holder feels flimsy. Whenever you closed the door it sounds like a tin can especially with the window down. Standard key fob range is so bad that your TV remote from 1995 probably have a better range and responsiveness. But with that being said Camry is still a solid car.
Yes Camrys are built I believe in Kentucky. So are the insights in Ohio. The prius is built in Japan. Huge difference
Gaps don't make a car a lemon. 🤣
REGEN BRAKING QUESTION .......
If you're going downhill or let off the brake to coast, is it automatically regenerating your EV hybrid battery?
Or are you forced to use the paddles on the side to get the regen braking to engage?
It automatically does it. But the paddles make the regen stronger
I have a serious question. Where was your vehicle manufactured/assembled??
Ohio like all insights are
That might explain why those imperfections are so noticeable in your vehicle. I've heard that vehicles actually assembled in Japan have better quality regarding small details like those. I also believe it's in Indiana where insights are manufactured. You got a sweet ride tho.
@@juanjosecisneros1633 yeah all the insights are built in Ohio including Civics and other vehicles. Long gone are the ones built in Japan, unless you get the Clarity Hydrogen or Plug In Vehicle
@@JohnnyKReviews I thought Insights were built in Indiana?
@@briandavis8406 powertain for insight is all in Ohio. Indiana is the assembly which might change to Ohio in near future.
Did you ever consider the Honda Clarity? It’s a plug-in hybrid with 47 mile EV range. It’s bigger than the Insight, about the size of an Accord. Not to mention it’s made in Japan!
I have. But the handling, interior space, dash unit, and engine are under powered compared to the insight. Love plug ins though! And think the clarity is amazing. We’ll have to see how Honda does it next year. So far the RAV4 Prime is prob the best plug in imo
@@JohnnyKReviews The Clarity actually has more interior space; it's a bigger car. It has the same engine that's in the Insight but the Clarity is 1,000 pounds heavier, so it can feel underpowered when the battery is depleted. Honda should have given it the 2.0 liter engine from the Accord Hybrid. There will be no Clarity next year, Honda discontinued it. Too bad the RAV4 Prime costs like $50K, and it still has less EV range than a $25K Clarity.
@@rickscott5290 believe I heard alot of the interior space or trunk was taken up by the batteries on the clarity. Yes cheap price used, they depreciated crazy! Rav4 Prime are crazy high price but with federal tax incentive and if you make a lot of money in writing off, it comes out to the same price as the hybrid. Overall much quieter, much more comfortable. And alot of room sitting up High. It's worth the price with the high EV range too. We'll be seeing alot more EV come in the lineup soon! I'm looking forward to it
Whats the maintenance cost monthly and after 6 months??
Almost Zero 0. Its a amazing engine and vehicle. Have to change the oil and rotate tires like normal car.
I heard that the insight's hybrid system is very different from other hybrids like the prius. Is that true? Seems like the engine can either 1) charge the battery only, 2)drive the wheels, 3) stay off. Is this (2) mode exclusive to the insigt? If so then will repairs etc be very expensive down the road?
The older insights had that issue. The newer ones went similar to Toyotas.
They’re reliable and you won’t have a issue, so no worries. But do your own research to make sure :)
Looks like the Corolla hybrid would be a better pick.
Yes I agree. Much better in terms of fit and finish. But the insight drives and handles alot better in my opinion. It also feels nice inside in terms of materials.
@@JohnnyKReviews Oh ok. Haven’t driven the new Insight yet. I have a 2010 Insight. I’m sure it drives a lot better than mine.
@@pianoplayer2516 yes way better and very different. It's on the new civic platform which is great. They'll be discontinuing the insight though in 2 years. Civic hybrid will take its place
At least you have black there mine is white always cleaning it
White interior?
Honda cannot maintain quality now...
The new car for Malaysia?
We’ll have to see!
Would you happen to know if an info system update will fix my backup camera issue. When I turn my lights to the auto position my reverse camera pops up on my touch screen (EX model). When I switch the lights to the off position, the reverse camera turns off and I can play the radio and use all the apps... only happens when I switch the lights on.
Also, the led backup lights on my trunk don’t turn on... think this is a wiring issue? May be related to the backup camera issue.
Kristopher Gastelum If it’s under warranty take it to the Honda dealership. They’ll fix it for you. If you’re under 36k miles
Could have been okay if I could hear the chap.
Should check out open pilot.
Already have. No videos on the software instalation. If they need someone to trial run it I'm open!
Video issue still not fixed.
Are there any weird noises or excess vibration etc.? Since you complained of the build quality. Thanks.
TJ I reached out to RUclips and they still have not gotten back to me. Went into the forums to read, seems many people are experiencing the same issue, and it is a RUclips glitch.
Will post a updated video shortly. Hopefully RUclips won’t mess that up too
TJ no vibrations, but the door and good panels are uneven. The engine noise makes significant amount of noise, just at regular throttle.
Video is back up!
Hi Johnnny! I have been thinking about buying 2022 Insight ex model at MSRP 26,855 buy I've never driven push button gear (no knob shifter). Is it easy to get used to it after driving for one week or taking longer to get used to it ? I like either 2022 Toyota corolla or Hyundai Elantra hybrids but these cars aren't available and waiting too long. It seems like people not interested in buying Insight like Corolla and Elantra. The only one available at Omaha ne is Honda insight without mark up price while Corolla and Elantra hybrids with mark up price they sold very quick. Does Honda fix ACC active cruise control in 2022 ?
The insight is a very strong choice in my opinion. For 2022 they've fixed many of the issues in exterior build quality. The ACC I've not heard issues for the 2022 model, but if there's any you can cover it over warranty. Corolla hybrid just updated theirs just recently. Elantra hybrid issnt bad but the corolla and insight take the cake for the moment. Hyundai and kia will be taking the cake imo next couple years.
And yes the knob thing I felt the same but I love it. Clears up space in the middle and easy to use. You'll get use to jt
@@JohnnyKReviews Thanks for reply. About 2 months ago I was thinking to buy 2022 Camry all wheel drive or Subaru Legacy because in the winter it is easy for me to drive during the snow weather. But the gas price keeps rising, I change my mind to buy the hybrid. The AWD Camry and Legacy use more gas mpg than front wheel drive
@@alanle5369 2023 corolla now comes AWD and Hybrid. If I would go back to buy I would get that instead of the insight. Corolla hybrid will last till you go to the grave plus super reliable. My uncle has the 2021 and it's amazing.
Honda is still great for reliability. But now Hondas are being assembled in America and I am sorry to say but Americans are lazy. And they are not good at assembly. Japanese made Hondas, Mazdas, Toyotas are much much better. Still for the money you can’t beat a Honda.
Toyotas and their manufacturing process is much more advanced and they're much better in my opinion having owned Prius, Corolla Hybrid and such. Ranking: Toyota, Honda, then Mazda. Although Mazda has been doing amazing lately. Would not recommend Nissan, they're owned by Renault (now overthrown), and quality has been terrible
I am fond of the Insight and expect to buy one late this year. I would never have noticed your build quality (actually fit & finish) issues wrt the gaps, because to me it's an appliance, not art and discussing that tiny amount of variation in gaps is a waste of my breath. But those issues often have more to do with a first year car of a new generation.
That is a 2019 (1st year) car. Was your Prius a new 1st yr car of its generation? That's exactly why I wait 1-2 years after the car has been released. All those fit and finish issues are addressed by good companies like Honda and Toyota after the 1st year. I agree with the "hard plastic" concern at the knee. Thank you for you very serious report. I will make a point of checking on my future Insight's gaps and let you know if they resolved that deficiency.
Prius is the first year as well for Gen 4. No issues. Family also had a Gen 3 2010 Prius, no issues. Honda has been iffy lately compared to Toyota in the last 10 years. Hopefully that changes and we see improvement! Great vehicle, but make sure to check it before buying :-)
FYI think the 2019/2020 Prius looks better now, and is a better vehicle imo. Compare both and see
@@JohnnyKReviews I don't have stock in Honda. But in your review I would have compared the fact that, aside from the MPGs, other important performance factors are handling and acceleration. There, the lackluster performance of the Prius drove me to the Insight. In that vein, Honda is like a ballerina next to a sumo wrestler in those two categories.
@@islandon22 yes the insight is 1.4 seconds faster 0-60 mph. But these cars aren't meant for racing to the red light lol. Big issue with the insight is the smaller sized engine makes a lot of noise compared to the Prius. End of the day, you've got to weigh out what matters most to you. Both cars are great though, whichever you choose
Honda has been going downhill for a while my 2017 civic has so many gaps and all of them have them to hats how the car is built lol I should of gone for Toyota paint chips easily and there's rattles to
As it turns out, we ended up with a 2020 Civic Coupe EX with the 1.5T. After 5000k, I've averaged 37mpg combined. Considering they offered $3000 discount off the Civic and next to nothing on the Insight ($500), I figured that it would take too many years to make up that $3000 in gas savings. And I love coupes. The discount was huge because Honda cancelled the Coupe for 2021. Also the dealer was stuck with 3 of the same color and trim.
As for the gaps...perfecto baby!!!😆
then get an SUV if its too low..... smh
YOu are right though, build quality is not high at all in most of these new cars
Def getting a SUV next, but there's many sedans that aren't low like the Insight in comparison. First two years of build of a newly designed vehicle will have issues till they fix out the bugs. You're right though new cars aren't like what they use to be
I'm 49, 6-0, 230lbs, I have the seat at its highest(tallest) position, and I don't feel really any issues regarding fatigue from seating height/posture, or any knee hitting like you describe. Build quality, tho, I agree, its not perfection for sure, although the build of my particular vehicle has less noticeable build quality issues than the one in this video, but that's still very indicative of inconsistent build quality. These cars were NOT assembled in Japan and perhaps that's why.
...1 side note, the front "passenger" side has NO height adjustment for my EX trim. Thats a shame. Its pretty low and if I were a "passenger" everyday, at my height, weight etc, getting in and out frequently would be much more of an issue.
If anyone wants to test drive and get your hands on one, come see me at Right Honda in Scottsdale, AZ!
You think they’ll improve these issues for next year?
Jeremey Potter I think a product refresh may bring solutions to some issues. But a lot of the misalignment on body panels etc idk and we’ll have to see
Johnny thanks for the response my man.
I think an additional con for me would've been the fact that there's no gear shift and knob
and… how does it drive ?
Drives like a Civic which is great. Firm but not too firm ride. Not as comfortable as accord though. Overall I liked it. Road noise was high though
Great car I have the touring car.
The touring is nice. Alot of additional tech and nice interior
Hi, Does the Touring have memory for the seats position?
You own a Prius so Of course you will give it a thumbs up but this car is much more refined, much more quicker, and gets much better MPG then you toy tincan car
@mercingfashions I own both so no taking sides here. However like I said in my review Honda drives better than prius. Mpg though prius is better and has more cargo room.
do u still have the car?
No I don’t have it anymore. Drove it to 50k and sold it.
@@JohnnyKReviews What made u get rid of it?
@@jflowers6620 made $5k over what I paid for it and drove it for free basically lol
Is this car made in US or Japan ?
US body etc. Engine from.japan
How much do you spend gas a week/month?
$30/month. But that varies on your driving, so it depends
@@JohnnyKReviews I see. How much is your daily/monthly drive mileage-wise?
The reason I’m asking is I’m looking to buy a hybrid/EV cars to use for my daily driving. I may have to drive around 110 miles a day for 5 days soon with my new job.
@@hondatoyotaforlife6646 you'd do great with a Hybrid. Had a 2010 prius and ran it to 150k with no issues
Bad review. Seems like you were trying really hard to find cons. Like another person said you got the base model. Get what you pay for.
Doesn't matter what trim you get, issues of it being low to the ground or exterior are all the same
Are you selling?
Still have it and it's going strong. Once the Kia and Hyundai EV's come out later this year I'll sell this. You interested?
Its lousy american made w japanese badge.. very unoriginal.. what do you expect??
There's def pros and cons to it!
Great review! Any issues with Fuel Pump/Oil Consumption as mentioned here: www.hondaproblems.com/models/insight/
No issues with it knock on wood. It's been a great vehicle, amazing handling, and amazing MPG including tech features
@@JohnnyKReviews Thanks! I’m debating on this vs Corolla Hybrid!
@@sunitjoshi3573 both are amazing vehicles you can't go wrong with. The insight is much more sporty in terms or handling and lower to the ground in seat height. The technology and digital display is better in the insight. MPG will be similar as well if you're getting hybrid.
@@JohnnyKReviews I think Corolla gets better mileage and better build quality. But, Honda has more power.
@@sunitjoshi3573 depends on model. LX insight gets over 55mpg. Higher models get lower. Toyota hybrid in my opinion is great

J/k don't know but they're Llumar and they make a world of difference in the cabin temp
@@JohnnyKReviews Thanks. I'm getting tint on a 21 Insight Tuesday and yours looks really good.

In the meantime I’ve placed a cliff notes in the description of video
John K thanks! You should look into getting the car fully detailed and ceramic coated for easier washing/drying and scratches usually wipe off with ceramic coating
You probably picked up a vehicle made in Mexico
Made in Ohio based on the vehicle information and manufacturing for Insights. Several parts are from Mexico though
*A “lemon car” means it looks great on the outside but it is garbage under the hood. So no, you don’t have a lemon
its been in an accident. any new car out of the show room will not dis align what so ever.
Accident as a brand new car? Unless its a lemon
Woo hoo no seat problems!
Who cares about your Prius! We were looking for a review of the Honda!
I think he was just trying to compare it to another hybrid
Because people cross shop this with a Prius.
DO NOT BUY THIS FUCKING LEMON!!!!!
I purchased the 2022 Insight Touring package three weeks ago. I purchased it for a daily driver and for road trips around Oregon, specifically to Mt Hood where my family has a tiny ski cabin.
With guests in the vehicle, it is unable to achieve and maintain highway speeds without the engine redlining with any more than one person in the car. It can barely make it up the 2-3% graded area, and I was terrified to try the 6% graded area. It felt INCREDIBLY unsafe and underpowered. My brother and I both thought something was slipping. The engine revs dramatically and almost no power is sent to the wheels.
I have no idea how I can use it to carpool. If you know the Portland area, it struggles to get up the west hills of through the tunnel up to Skyline on the way to Beaverton with just me (155 lbs). If I had two people or more in the car, I would feel horribly unsafe.
I took it to the shop and they said it was working as designed. This is completely unacceptable!
If you live in a completely flat area or only drive on city streets, yeah it will probably be fine. If you have any hills whatsoever, you are fucked.
Yeah the engine makes alot of noise since it's under powered for good MPG which it does get. The camry hybrid and Accord hybrid get lower MPG but don't have the same issues
@@JohnnyKReviews My 1980 VW Vanagon Bus had better acceleration up those same hills. I'd rather have my old 2000 Jetta TDI back that got 45+ mpg AND could take those hills without any effort. This car is garbage.
This troll posts this in all vids about insight
I weigh 250 and travel up the local canyon in Colorado with no problems. You can feel the difference with load in the car but unless you’re driving a hellcat no car is going to have the same acceleration. Side note) EV mode all the way down the other side of the mountain.
