      The Wild Dinkus! Keep in mind the hot air is entered into the combustion chamber which will get even hotter than the temperature the hot air came in at so tbh it don’t even matter unless the air is so hot off the catalytic converter it starts to get hotter than the combustion temperatures inside the actual engine. Now the engine has coolant running all throughout it to keep it below melting temps. So you’re a dumbass.

      And the curvy design is purely form following function. Sharp edges make for worse aero almost everywhere (except the trailing edge of the car where the airflow separates from the body). The teardrop shape is close to ideal for reducing drag.

    • @tennisontower8003
      @tennisontower8003 5 лет назад +108

      @@mr.grenade9497 The way it is supposed to work is that you always stay to the right. Ideally, you should never cruise in the fast or middle lane. This works best in less traffic, and especially on a two lane highway. You always stay in the right lane, until you come up to a car you want to pass. You merge left, get passed that car, and merge back right. For middle lanes, you should only stay there if you are going a decent speed. In this video, Doug is doing 5 over, and you can see that the blue Jeep in the slow lane behind him was doing a similar speed. In this case, he is the slowest on the highway, so he needs to be in the rightmost lane. The people here doing 10-15 over would stay in the middle lane. Anyone going even faster than that should be in the left lane then. Our highway system is similar to the German Autobahn in principle, but it is not actually followed through by most people, I expect mostly since you can get your license without ever learning how the highway system is supposed to work.

    For those of you who don't know 285, that is the loop around Atlanta. I drive a truck for a living and traffic there is comparable to LA. Atlanta is a BIG city if you've never been there before. If he is doing 5 over the speed limit, he's really not doing anything wrong. It's not his fault everyone wants to fly at 75 or 80. I cant blame him for not wanting to stay in the right lane because there is an exit every mile nearly and people don't know anywhere in this country how to properly merge onto or off a highway. Is it safer to go with the flow of traffic? Yes, is that how the law is written? No especially now that they have those electronic speed limit signs they can change at a moments notice, yeah talk about speed trap waiting to happen. Lol people are just assholes here that's why when they're going 80, know the speed limit is 60, and yet get mad cause they get stuck behind someone who's doing 5 over, just cause they won't get with it and speed like everyone else does.

Everyone goes the right speed for the lane they're in, people never cut others off, etc. All in all, everyone is great there. Italy on the other hand... Everyone is awful. It makes Los Angeles traffic look spectacular. It's a real life Mario Kart to put it simply. Lanes don't even exist there. The parkings are merely a suggestion and people just ignore them.

      +Razvan J , It is the same thing.
      50MPG vs 30MPG is 5/3 better fuel economy. I can drive 5/3 the distance on a gallon of gas in a 50MPG car than I can in a 30MPG car.
      it is the same in l% 7.84 is 5/3 larger than 4.7 It takes you 5/3 more fuel to travel the same distance.
      The fact that you rounded 7.8 to 8 and 4.7 to 6??? and 5/3 to 2, just indicates a failure in your math rather than a deficiency in either system
      The comparison between 10MPG and 30MPG is also the same.
      I can go 3 times the distance on a gallon of gas in a 30MPG car than i can in a 10MPG car. That is a huge difference.
      Your system would tell you the same thing. 23.5 is three times larger than 7.84. It would take you 3 times the fuel to travel the same distance.

    • @gmansplit
      @gmansplit 8 лет назад

      Razvan J It doesn't measure distance, it measures fuel consumption. I'm not really getting what you are saying. You get 20 more miles per gallon of fuel with 50 mpg vs 30 mpg. So basically 66.6 repeating percent better fuel economy. So with he same size tank, 66% farther on 1 tank.

    I feel like killing the engine is cheating. "Yeah, you get amazing gas mileage if you roll it down a hill with the engine off". What's next, shooting a grappling hook at the ass end of a semi trailer and getting drug around? If youre trying to get an accurate reading of your engine's gas consumption, it seems a little unfair to not run the engine at certain times. IMO

      @davidrichardson6749 4 года назад +1

      Simon48 Simon48 I do get your point but all “the other cars” aren’t killing their engines every time they have a second to spare (not talking about vehicles with start stop technology). My problem is inconsistency. If everyone measured every car that way, fine. But it’s just an unnecessary unreasonable thing to do. If you’re a hyper miler and you’re into doing stuff like that in the daily, fine. But if you’re trying to accurately get a number for consistent fuel consumption, why do something that is inconsistent and takes focus away from the vehicle being driven normally. I’m being nit picky and maybe a little unreasonable, sure. But I like statistics that are easy to understand. And killing an engine is a wildcard that makes it harder to know exactly what the car is capable of on it’s own, without outside or abnormal conditions effecting it. It’s just my own opinion really. It just makes me doubt the data a little more than usual because it’s an unusual variable. Nothing against anyone who uses this method.

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 4 года назад

      It's not cheating. How could it be? You're using an overlooked feature of the car, not a trailer. However, in some places, it's illegal to engine off coast (E.O.C.) It's also not advised for all drivers (especially inexperienced teens, and also people with joint problems who can't turn a steering wheel without power assist.) Plenty of hypermilers will E.O.C., if their car's equipped with a Manual Transmission. (They bump/pop start the engine with the Manual Transmission, to avoid using the starter and battery.)

    The hot air intake actually reduces fuel efficiency, for any given rate of acceleration the engine will require higher load to achieve this due to the lower output, resulting in more fuel being injected (due to the higher load). This is tried and tested.

      The most common purpose of this on this car is to get the car to operating temp quickly in cold climates. The colder the car runs the worse the MPG. This car will never reach full operating temp if its too cold outside and this hot air intake helps with that.

    • @flapdrol1095
      @flapdrol1095 6 лет назад +7

      The hot air intake works if you're in top gear with low load. The engine management will not go below a certain fuel/air mixture, warm air is less dense so less fuel will need to be injected per cycle and the throttle can opened a bit more lowering throttle losses.
      But it would be more efficient to have a cold air intake and a higher gear to shift to.

    • @DrCvC-nl2ji
      @DrCvC-nl2ji 6 лет назад +11

      You're probably right in stop and go driving situations. Long freeway trips as well as winter driving where the air density is much higher (therefore requiring more fuel to balance out the A/F mixture) a hot air intake made a huge difference (10-20mpg) on my specific application.

      A hybrid's usefulness depends entirely on the dedication towards efficiency put into the rest of the vehicle. Many/most hybrids available are little more than gimmicks, with the gains seen easily achievable via more conventional means.
      It's the fact that the Insight was focused on efficiency from the ground up that makes it so good. And also why it didn't sell as well, having only two seats and a relatively low recommended maximum load capacity.

    the 2000 honda insight is the best mpg car ever mass produced,a tiny 1.0 ltr 3 cylinder engine with a price tag of $20K when it came out.All aluminum body,and plastic as well.also has a aluminum frame to make it lighter.Total weight is 1600 pounds it pretty quick considering the 67 hp and the 13 hp electric assist.I had mine up tp 92 mph on a flat strech of highway then i got off the gas when i thought about how skinny my tires are.If you inflate the tires to 40-42 psi you get even better mpg.A 10.6 gallon gas tank and I go an average 550-625 miles to that tank.And if the costly battery does fail all you do is shut off the breaker and it still will get 40+ mpg and have time to save for a replacement battery,,which will cost from 2,500-5,000 depending where you get it replaced at,very smart to shop around for that battery,,thx for the video

      BTW if you need a new traction battery, I'd do a lot of research about upgrading your existing one with superior cells or buying one with them so it'll last longer and more capacity.
      A charger for the battery is good for the health of it so the cells stay equalized because I've heard the car doesn't do so great a job of that.

(straight up, straight ahead) I would say leave it in 5th gear, and keep following distance, so throttle can be applied as gradually as possible. Here in Quebec trucks have a maximum speed of 105 km/h (about 60 miles an hour). Needless to say I was scared as fuck to drive in the United States, nobody, I mean nobody respects the speed limit.
    Bonus points: there was this pick up truck with rocks in its bed, one flew off the bed, bounced on the highway, destroyed the oil pan on our friend's car leading the way. Almost killed our driver because the rock weighed at least 10 pounds, at 85 mph on the highway it would have went right through the windshield. Seriously american drivers, get your shit together.

      I was driving to VA beach and ran over a 6" (1.8288 m) ladder, just as the car in front of me swerved out the way I seen it, had to straddle it, heard a loud BANG.
      Pulled off at the next exit, looked under the car, pull out a long piece shaped over the engine cradle in the form of a "U".
      However when I was in Canada coming back from the "Falls" , I spotted a dead dear on on the road, I got around that one just in time to see the guy in back of me in a Chevy Celebrity hit it square and JUMP his car over it.

      I got hurt in the Army, so did many of my brothers and sisters, I knew if I walked that road...I just might not make it .. you know.
      Lost quite a few friends in more ways then one because of the bottle.
      When I was a freshmen in HS on the football team, we traveled to Canada to play your guys, we stayed with the other players, this was a 1-2 week event? back in 1989.
      First night we went to a place called ZAPS, my first bar. We walked in to see a guy getting carried out by all 4s by bouncers.
      I was sipping Labatts in one hand and chugging Bud in the other.
      The guy I was staying with had a scar on his head from a bar fight, had a bottle broken over his head.
      You guys can start drinking at what 14?
      The hangover was bad, very bad, but what an amazing time, the next night we were at a house party that got broken up by the cops, we all piled into his car, in the back seat with your cheerleaders, one on my lap 4 more in the back with me. Still rem my right side of my shirt stained with makeup and glitter, and the top of my legs hurting from her boney ass moving around, and trying not to get a hard on and failing at it lol.
      She had a skirt on, super hot and super flirty, I can still rem her "mound" slipping over my right leg.

      ramairgto72 The legal age to drink in Canada is 18 years old, but I guess kids will do just about anything to get their hands on alcohol. I started drinking at 18 because I was dead scared of getting drunk. If I remember, I got high for the first time before getting drunk for the first time.
      Anyways. Getting old doesn't suck. Everybody gets old. Let me put it that way: I'm 26 in 4 days, and I don't miss one bit being hangover. Getting wasted just to feel accepted. Getting so drunk, you wake up in the morning with puke next to your bed. When you wake up still drunk, but it takes an hour before you realize your breath smells like shit and that you're still drunk as fuck.
      Drunks think they're cool, but in my book they're pathetic people that need help and love. I'm not a drunk anymore but I'm glad I've went through this shit because I wouldn't be where I am right now.

      It depends on many factors of the car, on top of wind resistance, like transmission and differential gearing, tire size, engine power band (where the HP and TQ peaks are) and then aerodynamics. These are what are most significant to what speed you get the best MPG at in your vehicle. What may work great for you in your vehicle won't work for someone else because they are in the top of 2nd gear to reach 45 and 3rd gear bogs you down too much. There's all kinds of factors that all work with each other and contribute to peak MPG.

A vacuum-operated door in the air intake pipe (feeding the air filter) switches between cold outside air or hot air from the exhaust manifold - or a mixture of both. I've thought it helps the engine get up to working temperature quicker (in a cold climate), and that it reduces emissions on a cold engine.

      It is also incredibly dangerous to switch the engine off while coasting - your brake booster and power steering will no longer function and you won't be able to stop or swerve to avoid an accident because you will need to employ much more brake pedal or steering effort than you're accustomed to.

      It's still the most highway-efficient non-plug-in car ever sold in the U.S., 20 years after its release!
      It's got an all-aluminum chassis, and the body panels are aluminum or plastic!
      It's got a 1-liter 3-cylinder engine with an electric assist built right into the engine block, making ~67 horsepower out of the ICE and another ~10 or so out of the electric!
      It uses NiMH batteries for its Integrated Motor Assist battery pack, which it keeps between 20% and 80% charge to prolong battery life!
      It's got fully electric power steering!
      It's got a drag coefficient of 0.24!
      It's got an aluminum engine block, and parts of the suspension are aluminum!
      The 165/65R14 tires are specially made for this car, which makes them annoyingly expensive!
      The road noise is annoyingly loud!
      The seating position is really low, but once you're sitting in it it's actually quite comfortable!
      It's got digital climate control, and optional air conditioning!
      Unlike the Prius which uses electric primarily, the first-gen Insight uses the gas engine first, which is one of the reasons why it's better cruising on the highway and the Prius is better in the city!
      The manual weighs under 1,900 pounds! The CVT weighs under 2,000 pounds!
      Only 14,000 of them were sold worldwide over 7 years! Compare this to the Accord, which sells more than that on a bad month in North America alone!
      Adjusting for inflation, they'd be about US$31,000 new in 2020! And Honda still took a loss at their MSRP!
      The car has a 'lean burn' mode; it collects the resulting nitrous oxides in a second catalytic converter, and then periodically burns them off with a slightly higher than stoich mixture, thereby _actually_ adhering to emissions requirements instead of cheating them, while still improving efficiency!
      Also it's my dream car! And I own one and I love it! Can you tell I'm enthusiastic about this car!

      ***** if the down hill is steep enough or you're trying to drop speed, coasting in gear (in any remotely modern efi vehicle) is better because the injectors get completely shut off since the computer knows that the motion of the car is keeping the engine spinning.

    2.) Add 2 gallons of fuel

    I once was helped by a rural route mail carrier who is driving a modified insight that she had given a warm air intake. She claimed that she'd gotten well better than a hundred miles per gallon and I believed her but I think she was driving pretty slowly to do it. at the time I was single and was really kicking myself for not finding her because she seemed like a really fascinating girl.

    Turing the engine off downhill? WTF?!? Ever heard of fuel cutoff? The hotair intake is also copmplete nosense...

    • @d4rkhound388
      @d4rkhound388 8 лет назад +5

      No... Diesel engines use it but for a different reason, the Hot air is less dense and instead of burning more fuel and air you take up some of the volume of the cylinder with USED gas and then add a small amount of air and petrol to keep the same speed without burning more fuel.

    • @Dwarf19864
      @Dwarf19864 8 лет назад +1

      Some cars come from factory with a loop back system and a ECU which knows that some exhaust is looped back in to the cylinder. Now on this video, they just force feeded smoke into intake, messed up the ECU''s calculations and made the car have bad burn cycles -> more burn cycles needed for car to move -> more fuel consumption.

    • @Eric__J
      @Eric__J 7 лет назад

      Actually, if this works the way it's claimed, it should decrease fuel consumption. The MAF adjusts fuel injection to match the amount of air flow. If the air is hotter, it will inject less fuel. Whether this actually increases fuel economy over cold air and less throttle is hard to say, but based on my experience with cars without A/C, the efficiency gains might be worth the effort.
      It is not looping the exhaust through again as one commenter believes. It is simply using the hot catalytic converter to pre-warm intake air.

    • @charvakkarpe
      @charvakkarpe 7 лет назад +2

      It works by reducing pumping losses. Low density air at wide open throttle results in no engine braking. Dense air at partial throttle means the engine has to pull more vacuum. And you're right, this isn't EGR, it's just heated air.

    • @IstasPumaNevada
      @IstasPumaNevada 7 лет назад +1

      Fuel cutoff still leads to losses from engine friction. Not saying coasting in neutral with the engine off is safe, or legal, but it is the most efficient. And warm air intake does improve efficiency for gasoline engines; reduces pumping losses past the throttle plate and improves vaporization of fuel. Drawback is it's the opposite of a cold-air intake; reduces available power.

    In Toronto Canada the speed limit is 100km/h on the highway and when you drive 130km/h people still fly past you like darts. Trucks drive in the left lane going like 135km/h and every one swerves around you. It's literally scary to drive the actual speed limit.
