My mom bought a 2002 kia spectre for $700 as a beater car, just to get to and from work. We half expected to get about 10,000 miles out of the car before it gave up, but that was 2 years and 25,000 miles ago. It just rolled over 200,000 miles earlier this year and it just chugs along. I wouldn't say it's an underrated car because there isn't anything spectacular about it, but it is underrated because it's a tank that you would never expect to be a tank.
My 2004 Seat diesel has 370k (that's in kilometers) on it and runs fine. I wouldn't be surprised if the previous owner had it wound back a 100k either. Still I have confidence it will last easily to 500k and probably even further.
I had a 2007 KIA Spectra. My boyfriend was driving home just after dark in the pouring rain. He was hit on the highway offset front by an older Toyota Camry doing probably 60 mph. He was doing about 30 and slowing down in the turn lane when he was hit. He walked away from it with a small cut on his heel from his shoe, and bruising from the seatbelt. The driver of the Camry was taken to the hospital. He broke several bones in his feet, bruised not just his ribs, but his entire chest, and actually bruised his lungs. He had to have stitches on his forehead, and also bruised his face pretty badly. The KIA, of course, was totally demolished, but there was little to no intrusion into the passenger compartment. I was amazed.
That's a good anecdote to demonstrate what a load of horseshit these rating systems (IIHS etc.) are, they build cars specifically to pass finely engineered testing scenarios, which produce predictable results, to win a high score. Has nothing to do with real world performance with a recipe of randomly occurring forces and angles.
On Regular Car Reviews, the guy got it for free! I also have gotten cars for free in the past. I've gotten a 1992 Toyota Camry for free, a 2000 Mazda Milennia for free, and a 1994 BMW 318is for free too!
I own a Kia Spectra just like this one since 12 years now. Runs perfect and over 270000 kms driven. I fell in love with it on first day, and it's a so reliable car. It never let me down. A pleasure to drive and so smooth when driving in the snow. The parts are quite cheap and it'seasy to repair when needed. Even tough I care for it a lot, one day it may die and when it does, well... Laugh and judge me if you'd like, but I'll keep the key as a necklace and build office/gaming chairs with the front seats and a small couch with the rear one. This is my first manual transmission car, the first car I chose and bought, and it has so much value for me.
All kidding aside I know exactly what you mean. I’ve had nice cars and pieces of junk. The junk is care free living. The nice car is nice but you’re completely paranoid about everything

+Joel Siciliano How true...I used to sell the Hyundai Elantras in 2003, and the timing belt must be replaced every 52,000 miles. Sold one to my neighbor's son, who decided to put the timing belt off at 52K, and it snapped shortly thereafter. The Elantra was a good car, but the Mazda Protege is better...my wife still drives an 02 Protege and it runs like new at 105,000 miles. Timing belt on these easily lasts 90K.
some years ago i was working for a contractor. At the time i din't have any cars of my own, so i was given an old Toyota Dyna 100(pick up) that i could use to and from work for a few weeks. There was a orange light in the dash saying T-belt though. The car was about 15 years old, it never started on the first try, was dented an scratched, and had about 300k km(180k miles) on the clock. Of course there was something that was wrong, so I gave it no care for the first few days. I asked my colleagues what the T-belt light was, they said it indicated it was time to change the timing belt. I asked when it was last changed, they answered "never". Till which, slightly shocked, I ask "how long does it last?". I was told it was supposed to be changed every 100k km (60k miles) and that it could snap at any time. Nice to know, considering the car was a flat nose, and that I literally was sitting on top of the engine while driving. I do believe the timing belt held the cars life. I believe it was scraped a year or so later, when it failed the road vehicle approval(whatever it´s named in american).
+Torvikholm Toyota are pretty long lasting from what I observe. a timing belt lasting that long is impressive. friend of mine had his go in his Hyundai at 83,000 miles and of course interference engine... engine was toast. still annoys me when they just scrap, atleast be in a big financial pinch before if you're gonna do that. if it's older, whatever it is just fix it and keep it going.
The T8D engine in that Spectra is non-interference. It's a nice little engine really, not a powerhouse by any standard but solid, economical and well executed. The story is that it was Kia's first wholly in-house design and being their first in-house design the engineers were rather conservative: everything is a little heavier, little thicker, slightly less stressed and designed to run cooler.
I had an 03 Kia Rio, well I kept putting it off till one day Idling at a stop sign the belt had a 5 or 6 inch section of teeth sheer off. Most of the valves shattered, couple of cylinder wall scratch up bad but luckily the engine was Idling at the time. I got the head rebuilt for about $850.00 plus a new timing belt and all was good again :) But boy did I learn my lesson, don't put off replacing those belts.
My brother used to own a 2004 kia spectra, one day I was driving it when the car made a loud bang out of nowhere! The the noise of the engine then became 2-3 times louder, we figured that the muffler might have gone out. But the muffler was still there. 3 days later it unexpectedly caught fire while in the parking lot of my brothers work. The whole front end was torched by the time the firemen came, it was a total loss.
Hell, for $1, I'd be happy driving it around too. Cosmetics aside, he could probably get several years out of it with about $300 in parts. In my book, a car that costs $8 - $12 per month plus gas and cheap insurance is a good deal.
Well this is when you realize total frustration of feeling jealous due to the way you have to take care of his Aston and the final price tag for maintenance....
+Techno sailor - I had that same noise with my Spectra, even after changing all the belts... and it was actually the bearing in the alternator. Had to get an entirely new alternator, even though it was just the bearing for the pulley.
+S Brian Chong Most people don't have the tools required but if you disassemble the alternator and got the part number for the bearings you could replace just the bearings using bearing pullers and a hydraulic press. But hey it's a throw away society now so they'll waste the whole alternator.
+KiwiPowerNZ - Damn, I would've done that had I known. I asked the dealership if they could just replace the bearing and they said no... I don't have a hydraulic press, though.
S Brian Chong Parts are cheap, labour is very expensive. If you ask them to fix an engine they'll recommend finding a used engine from the wrecker because it's less time and labour. Mechanics and dealerships will always take the route that requires the least time and labour.
See my whip is made of low quality leather, so I'm relatively worry free. Sometimes the handle gets a little dusty when I'm not beating people with it, but brush it off and it's good as new. Some nasty residue or gnarly scratches have no effect on my whip, it's fake leather too so it's vegan friendly.
My car was £280 and is a fiesta and like this it doesnt matter. It is fully working and has 0 issues and only had 69k miles at the time as well but I had a crash and scraped the bumper, didn't give a fuck. I've stood on the roof as well, stuff I wouldn't dare to have done in my newish bmw
I have a 07 Kia spectra with 155k miles and drives perfectly for me. I use it for business and make thousands a week from driving it. And I drive it all over Texas. That’s why I love it so much because I have 0 worries.
+Tuddec It truly is the best way to go. I screwed up bad when I traded my beater pickup for a nice one. I had to buy a trailer to use for more severe "truck" things. I just can't bring myself to ruin something nice. Now if it was a company truck or that was how I earned my living, bring on the abuse.
I owned this car throughout highschool. One time, I got stuck in some snow at a party, and I and 5 friends of mine were able to lift is out. I used to do donuts in my local church parking lot using the parking break. One time, a dude in a huge ford truck backed into my drivers side door in a dairy queen parking lot while I was still inside, and I got a green replacement door for like 15 dollars. I loved that car.
Shitty beaters are the best. I owned a 1990 Mazda 626. Rust was everywhere, but that car was comfortable, had 4 power windows and a glued in sunroof. I never locked it and never cared about it.
So let me get this straight, you owned a Ferrari and an Aston Martin and your camera dude is driving that? You need to pay him better my guy! Edit: guys I meant this as a joke chill the F out
LegacyMuse Kia and Hyundai are the same company and they offered the same warranty. Also, there was a trick, you could buy it "Certified pre-owned" and pay to renew the warranty bumper to bumper.
this kind of a transportation unit is precisely the reality for most people, at least at one point in their life (just an observational guess). i got a handed-down 96 corolla that had gotten its oil changed THREE TIMES before it got to me (150k miles). surprise surprise, the engine seized up on me one day, and right when i got on the washington (dc) beltway.
In Africa or Russia they would still pay thousands of Dollars for this car! Fix the water pump and belt tensioner and this car will still live for decades
I bought a cheap car that was going to the scrapyard anyway, just to use as a hack and not bother about it getting banged or dented or whatever. After a few months I got quite attached to it. It never let me down, drove spot on, and I got used to all it's little quirks. One of the best cars I'd ever owned and all it cost me was the equivalent of a night out in town. Was really sad to see it go in the end.

Koshunae hellyeahhh it will go forever lol
Koshunae most cars can get over 200k
Many cars can, many cars also blow transmissions and engines long before.
Koshunae 200k miles is only surprising for American car owners. Most Japanese cars like a Civic can do 400k and still run fine.

That's amazing because usually the one getting hit will sustain more bodily injury
Wow!
That's a good anecdote to demonstrate what a load of horseshit these rating systems (IIHS etc.) are, they build cars specifically to pass finely engineered testing scenarios, which produce predictable results, to win a high score. Kia and Hyundai are all fun and games until the timing belt snaps...

That's more than the car's worth even if it's free
sounds like a salvage title
or you can buy 75 more Kia Spectras for that money, and hopefully one of them won't have that noise
Wait, I think that means the car is totaled in some terms or whatnot
Could you make the guy feel any worse Doug? Jeez...
He seems pretty content with owning a worthless car lol
Hell, for $1, I'd be happy driving it around too. Cosmetics aside, he could probably get several years out of it with about $300 in parts. In my book, a car that costs $8 - $12 per month plus gas and cheap insurance is a good deal.
Well this is when you realize total frustration of feeling jealous due to the way you have to take care of his Aston and the final price tag for maintenance....
I'm pretty sure it's all just friendly banter.
apparently he did by taking a dump on the bonnet after this review
Common car knowledge would tell you that the screeching noise when it starts up is an easy fix, its just a belt...
+Techno sailor Even a cheepo belt would be worth more than the car.
1:22 is actually the 90s version of Kia's infamous "welcome sound" and young Doug wasn't ripe enough to catch that quirk
If the handbrake actually worked I would've bought this car instantly.
It a really really easy and incredibly cheap fix. Mechanical handbrakes are some of the simplest machines
