The most impressive part about all of this isn't the efficiency. The most impressive part is that you made it from Virginia to NYC and back with no plates, no mirror, a fairly conspicuous car, and did not get pulled over once.
They had a temp tag taped onto the hatch window.
Also, some states only require "one mirror that can see directly behind the car for several hundred feet". PA for example, I drove my aero-modded first-gen Legacy around there for years without mirrors and had no issue. (I put the mirrors back on if I had cargo blocking my view out the windows.)
Could not be more proud that my S2000 was made in the same factory as a Honda Insight.
Weird flex but okay
The funniest part of all of that is that the insight has the same steering wheel as the s2k hahaha
I want one because the gauges and wheel would match my S2k haha.
Man my Lamborghini was made on the same planet as the Honda Insight.
What ?
Why ?

@@ericflores4924 No. US law requires at least one external mirror.

@@ericflores4924 Federal law requires two mirrors, one of which must be a driver's side. It doesn't have to be external, but does have to be driver's side.
I can't help but think that an insight would be a fantastic platform for some kind of performance mods. Low drag, *super* lightweight. This things is lighter than a freakin mirage!
Check out the Insight engine swap done by LHT. They swapped a K-series engine, turbocharged it and added all-wheel drive... They'll even build you one if you provide an Insight. Top notch work.
I'm thinking electric supercharger... 144v battery, lots of juice available, 1L engine, not too much air required, could be a good application.
@@Kiloechonovember1 yeah I was about to mention that myself think they did an awd one as well

Ben: "first tick was like 200 miles worth" "the last tick was like 20 miles worth"
**Cut to Ben literally filling up the fuel filling neck** 9:33
I have a first-gen Insight, and even without overflowing the filler neck, the first few bars of the gas gauge always take notably longer to disappear than they should.
It's fine though, it's the last few bars that you really need the accuracy, and it's always consistent. The indicated fuel economy is also highly consistent, reliably reads about 1.5% high.
"Gas gauge says our MPG is way off" "Oh wow our driving range ended up being exact match to our MPG"
The guage was also only off because they overfilled it
“This isn’t the first time i’ve done this in a car before...” “oh really?” 😂
Yeah, tall Ben is definitely still a virgin. 😂
congrats, you got the joke!
In 2004, I drove my stock 2000 Insight manual from Boulder, Colorado to Chicago, over 1,000 miles, on 8.5 gallons of gas. I had downgrade elevation and tailwinds on my side, but I did it. It was amazing to do such a long road trip across two days without stopping for gas. That was my claim to fame in that car.
I smell cap
that is 117 mpg, damn
I don't believe you
Maybe cap; however, Boulder is over 5000 ft above see level. Rolling down hill doesn’t take much.
I have an ioniq and I get about 67 mpg around town and about 65 on the highway, I feel like from the springs to Tennessee I’d only actually have to fill up once as my average range with electric and fuel is about 690-700 miles on every fill up on 87 grade fuel.
3:26 "and also your rear wheels aren't turning"
Well that's going to increase drag significantly
Missing a part of the underbody that deflects air around the front tires, makes a big difference. Full throttle driving like a jerk and you can get the mpg down around 45ish
Your video editing guy needs a pay raise holy crap
Yeah, very dope.
I believe that both Ben’s do a lot of the editing themselves. Saw it on one of their videos titled “who is gears and gasoline” 2020. Something like that
They record and edit everything themselves, thats why they the goats!!!
yeah they're previous video students, they have tons of equipment and knowledge. their editing is crazy. I think they showed it on their first roadtrip series.
Plot twist: you're the video editor
I'm an automotive engineer for Honda. I wanted to point out that the tape in the hood added back the drag if not more that you removed from taking the wipers out. Every time a tiny piece of tape moves, it creates a huge vacuum towards the back slowing you down. See if you can get a wind tunnel to test tape positions for better efficiency. Last, the mirrors actually lowered the coefficient, by taking them off you guys added some more drag back. Great try guys 👍.
Just wondering, how did removing the mirrors add back drag?
@@al1g8r94 the engineers take for account the vortex created by the different parts of the car, like the mirrors, wipers, badges, etc. That's why the rear wheel is covered to compensate for the vortex created in the front. Removing them, causes the air to distort differently than expected before it reaches the back. Also, tape adds surfaces that makes the wind react in a manner it was not expected, slowing the car down.
They should have just claybarred and waxed the car instead of messing with some of the tape
I knew something was not right with this trick but I was not finding the logical explanation behind it. Surely everything that is on that car is a whole that helps and makes sence👍
And this guy was driving 76mph, no way that’s the most efficient speed
Nice work guys!
723 miles on 11.1 gallons in my Kia Niro is my personal record. Just inside of 65mpg overall.
Nice! That's quite good for a car that size.
I absolutely love this video. It shows how much appreciation you guys have for any well engineered automotive venture. Its quite impressive to get those kinds of mpgs, where depending on the platform, making a lot of HP isnt that impressive anymore.

Hypermiling at nearly 80 mph? Come on, guys.
Seriously
More mph than hp lmao.
They are idiots. The car won’t even be able to use lean burn at that speed. I forget the cutoff, but I believe it was in the 60’s.
50-55 mph maybe...not at the speeds they were running. Heck i got 45 mpg in a 87 golf driving from philly to Atlanta
Was so angry that they went through so much effort to lighten the car, be aerodynamic, make it useless as a daily driver, but then throw that all away with speed.
I am so glad you guys fully respected this car, this shows that you guys are true car anthusiasts.
I like how they showed so much love and respect for this car
Yeah, too many RUclipsrs shit on cars that aren't supercars just for the sake of it.
Same, I got one of the new 2020 models. It only gets 57 miles city which is pretty good. I spend no money on gas since all my driving is city, also I put a 10in sub in the back to pass the time getting from place to place
insight is based on the CRX, which is a legendary old tuner car. Just because it's efficient doesn't mean it's not cool!
I drove a 2nd gen Insight for a few weeks, and it was the most stressful thing, because I was treating the MPG gauge as a challenge.
that’s me in my civic
@@pineLmc me in my tdi
Like they said, you could ignore the MPG meter and still get stellar efficiency. I would still try to learn efficient habits like cruising at around 60-70.
That’s me on my 2010 Honda Insight 😅😂
I did that for the first month of owning my 2011 Insight, and then I basically settled for having the cruise control do as much as possible. I tend to just follow (at a safe distance) behind lorries on the motorway and it's a bit of fiddling with speeds in the city and on rural roads, but in the end I get about 4.3L/100km and I'm fine with that. I use the heated seats and climate control like a normal person, so I'm sure I could squeeze out that bit more, but I can't be bothered.
These two are destined to be legendary.
21:04 why is he doing 76mph? That’s not hypermiling come on man
Coasting down a steep hill?
I owned an Insight for 12 years, and averaged 75 mpg. Once you learn how to best use the lean burn mode, it’s easy to cruise along at 100+ mpg on the highway. I’ve since gone full EV, but still miss that little car.
Which EV do you own?
One good smack from a delivery van or Suburban when you are in a miniature car and all your gas savings goes out in medical bills .

Great video, glad to see the Insight getting some appreciation! I have a 2006 manual Insight with 265K on the odo... fantastic car and very much worth the quirks and the maintenance. Keep practicing with that hypermiling thing... you can absolutely get into the mid to high 70s MPG on a stock manual first gen if you learn all the tricks and take it easy!
Couple things that weren't mentioned in this video that really help with fuel economy in your Insight: air your tires up to maximum sidewall pressure, it makes a surprisingly big difference in MPG on these cars by further lowering rolling resistance. Also, use lower road speeds (try to stay under 60 MPH) and focus on driving with load (give it less throttle on uphills/more on downhills) to keep in lean burn longer and more frequently. A wideband air-fuel gauge will let you see when you're in lean burn and how far into it you are (or get an OBDC&C for lots more Insight-specific data).
Also a couple maintenance things you could do: you were missing some panels under the front bumper that weren't replaced by the Killer3Cyl panel (there should be one in front of each wheel, these are pretty important for aero). It's also worth learning more about your IMA battery and checking up on its health, as these had very rudimentary battery management systems and can go out of balance easily and lose performance even if they still appear to function. For someone who's never driven an Insight before it could be hard to tell this is the case, since you've only ever driven it with the battery in its current condition.
There are lots more tips on the Insight Central forums and the community there is extremely helpful- check it out if you haven't already, it is a treasure trove of information.

I only got rid of it because I couldn't find someone to work on it other than the dealership. I still regret it. I'm surprised you guys didn't do 55 the entire way? Towards the end the speedo literally read 76 or something
Yea I caught that too... but also some cars get better mileage on some higher speeds
@@Vandallolwut The best mileage is accomplished, for the most part, by achieving the highest speed at the lowest RPM.
And in the case of a manual, (and some automatics) that is accomplished by holding the lowest, but most maintainable, speed at the highest gear.
My '97 Camry's best, on it's automatic 4 speed, is around 40-45 mph. I can manaage around 30mpg holding that speed on flat ground.
Which i think is pretty damn good for an old, slightly worn, cast iron engine.
I have a 2001 Insight, on a long trip 60 mph seems to give the best MPG. When I drove slower, the engine bogs down too much in 5th gear and the mpg suffers. So if they were to go 50mpg to 65mpg using, pulse and glide when they can’t draft; then you need to get right up on the truck to draft. You are helping his mpg as well. They could have easily broken 100mpg on the whole trip. Just traveling at 60mpg with no drafting they could have done 80mpg. (They should have finished tuning up the engine and battery). Fuel injector cleaner and re-balancing the cells (which is really easy). Easier than changing the oil or spark plugs.
Also, once the IMA battery is over 75%, you can use the AC going down hill and stay comfortable while going over 100 mpg. However, they did have the fuel cell; so they HAD to run out of gas to use it. So I imagine there is some footage where they were getting too high of an MPG and figured they had to drive faster and more inefficiently to make sure they ran out of gas. BTW, when accelerating you WANT to use the assist. As long as you don’t go over 3/4 throttle. In fact, my best mileage of over 800 miles on 9 gallons of gas; I would accelerate and decelerate using the IMA. If you don’t use the assist, you get WORSE mileage!
They also could've made things much easier by only having one person in the car and carrying extra luggage in the camera car from the start. I think it's pretty clear they didn't actually want to succeed.
I love this. Great work as always guys.

Love that Honda Insight
I've seen one of these in person, it's clearly a hyper miller, but it's ALSO kei car sized so it's actually potentially great for downtown driving
I loved the efficiency of the insight when I was in high school and even wrote my senior research paper on it. Do you guys remember the mpg insight battle that car magazines wrote about in the early 2000s? The winner ended up renting a large suv with side opening doors. they would literally make the insight drive up to the back bumper of the suv while the doors were open. They'd only move apart when a cop car was spotted so they wouldn't get a ticket. Got over 100mpg and beat everyone else by about 30 mpg.
btw, did you ever check the battery age and how well it holds the charge?
Proving the Honda could make the whole trip on the stock tank alone would have been nice but proving you've got the integrity to not tamper with the test by gassing up off camera, that's so much cooler. Nicely done boys, were proud of you.
Too bad they've not got the integrity to do the challenge properly by opening the windows, messing with the drag, accelerating fast, going too fast etc etc.
I love the way the insight looks. Would love to put a B series in it for gen III CRX vibes
