Yep, roads is one of the areas where we still stick to imperial. Because all the road signs are, and it would cost a bomb to replace. We do buy fuel in litres though lol
If you learn both from an early age it's actually not that hard, a lot of people can do rough conversions in their head too. Most liquids are measured in metric but we still sell beer and cider in 1/3, 1/2 and full Pints, as well as milk, as well as measuring large quantities of liquid in gallons. When a lot of cooking recipes are in either metric or imperial depending on the recipe book you learn to deal with both systems.
british people: if you measure fuel tank capacity in liters, fuel prices in pounds per liters, and your petrol station tells you how many liters you've filled up, why on earth do you measure fuel consumption in miles per gallon? especially since your gallons aren't even the same as the american gallons? if you must use miles why not miles per liter or liters per 100 miles? this makes my head hurt...
I really love the RX-8 videos, but this mpg stuff is really difficult to get if you're used to l/100 km. I used Google to get a quick calculation and was impressed with the low consumption until I learned that British gallons are different from US GALLONS. What a mess... @SunzOffski That's actually pretty good for an Impreza 😁
Owner of an rx8 for the last 13 years. Low power model, bought it new. Today, odometer has almost 180.000 km with a compression 7,1 on both rotors (1st engine). The car is always under factory specs and factory maintenance. Really proud of my choice. Never seen that mileage though. Nice experiment. Hope your return to London was with the pedal on the floor!!! Cheers!
@@skylerbond56 for the last 35 years I've never used anything more than factory specs, in all my vehicles (cars, motorcycles). I don't disagree with you and I hope your engine will last long. @@gerkav1008 For sure, but never drive it under 3k rpm unless you want carbon build up, and a redline a day keeps the carbon away. Just keep up on maintenance and you're golden. I just premix in case the oil injection fails it keeps it lubed.
I literally just bought one and had to drive it home exactly 404 miles home. Used about 67 liters. The first 30 miles or so of the trip, it was sucking the gas and then it ended up doing better and better the closer it got to home haha. Maybe it needed a good beating to clear some crap out
my MazdaSpeed3 has been forgiving with the fuel light on i can avg 34 mpg out of boost on freeway barely using gas pedal. very impressive an RX-8 can go that far!! Even with a check engine light on! - meaning the car is not in closed loop and the catalyst / o2 sensors wont give max efficiency!
I had an RX8 for about 4 months, 8mpg.. I had to get rid of it, had 60k on the clock i didnt want to drive anywhere I always expected it to blow up. The saving grace for this car is the styling and chassis it handles so well.
You think this is bad? I have a 1999 nissan patrol with a 100 liter tank and i filled it up once and tried to go to another city which was 250 KILOMETERS away... I failed at 190. Your rotary is a toyota yaris to me.
Wtf. I got an Audi A4 2001 with 70l of tank (5l is reserve, so you typically fill up 65l) and I reach 800-900km with it. I really don't understand how this is special...
Is that the small diesel with 89HP? my dad has an early A4 (M-95) with the 89hp engine, that wasn't the most refined diesel, but if you just sat behind a lorry (at what the speedo claimed was 60MPH) it could do some pretty impressive MPG figures.
Nice one Alex I was one on the forum who thought this would never be possible! I average around 200 miles on mine per tank so 400+ is insane! Great video as always keep up that Rotary love

So cheap to buy, expensive to keep but to get an equivalent the price would be 10 times.

Just see 2 blokes in a car next to me at some lights and thought I'd just go and leave them for dust not realising they were police.... Anyway I left them for dead, then in my rear view I see flashing lights, and was shit that's for me.. So a good minute later after I slowed right down to the speed limit they caught up.. As much as I miss the suicide doors, quirky interior, 9k rpm redline and the immense smoothness of that rotary engine, I'm so glad I don't have an RX-8 any more.
Jeremy Clarkson did an economy run in a Supercharged Audi V8 from London to Edinburgh and back to London on one tank of fuel ! Yes, my second guessing, is that the Audi's tank is much bigger than the Mazda's, but still, Jezza still holds the record for the best V8 eco run ever ! 👏
I also had my brand new RX8, bought 2004 on my own plate A17 RXB (AN RX8).... Overall fuel consumption was circa 24 mpg, and never driven in anger! It did burn oil, but not as bad as some were saying! Traded in 2 years later, with 53k miles (had to get out of it before 60k), and also it was lethal in snow)! Got a 6 MPS reg T16 MPS (Ti6 MPS) Turbo injection 6MPS, (4WD) and we had no snow!! High road tax, 9k service intervals, tyres all round before 11k miles and low 20s mpg!
I had a (monster port) 13B when I was younger and got 29 miles to the gallon on a trip. Every bit as good as 4 cylinders of that era. Also, you didn't run the poor old thing dry! You might have had another 10 or 20 miles left in it...( I should have watch the end before I made that comment)
The celebration probably was going to wait until everyone was home and rested. Driving that long would have probably been hell without all the "games" and stress.
Jack D I got 13 cars but the 20b outa my drift wagon popped the intake manifold gasket so it down at the moment luckily there isn't any events at the moment till the end of march. Other that the apex seals and intake manifold gaskets my 20b has been a tank 189k on it since the last time I rebuilt it. If ya build them right rotary's can last a bit lol
I would assume they detuned (for mileage) and or shot this video first but released it later because they needed to gain a following for Felix with the build videos, hence we are more willing to watch this.
Chuffed you guys got 400+mile from a rx8, When it hit half tank i was doubtful as anytime I hit have tank the second half goes twice as fast as the first half 😂 Super cool series 👍🔰🔰🔰🇯🇵
This man is a beacon of hope for all rx8 owners out there I would drive from Kent, WA all the way to Seattle and that ate half my tank with moderate acceleration
Economy driving has more skill involved that any other form of driving. Most folk don't have the patience or the knowledge to get what the manufacturer claims nevermind hypermile their cars.
I dunno about that. Takes a bit more skill pushing a car around a corner at max speed than it does to set cruise control with the a/c and all power accessories turned off driving as slow as you can.
Yeah I think he must have done this during the run in period maybe after they did the rebuild. He probably went back to rotary revs on the way back down they shot the tuning video. I don't think he would have made this trip on a tank after they put that tune on it to make flames out the exhaust.
@@VidzVideo that would be ridiculously bad for the engine if this is the case. When running in a rebuilt rotary it needs to have different RPM loads put on it, keeping it at 3k RPM during the run in period won't do the engine any good.
I personally know a former owner of an RX-8. He bought the car brand new. After getting to 30,000 miles, the engine lost compression completely. It was rebuilt under warranty at the dealer. 5000 miles later, the engine died. Mazda sent a rebuilt engine from Japan (because they didn't want to risk having quality control issues at the dealer). The engine blew after 6000 miles. At that point, they suspected it may have been a problem from the injector, ignition or fuel pump. But after going through this, who would want to risk it again?
Strange. I never had such issues with any rotary I had to deal with. But I always drove the hell out of it with daily redlines, and cruised at 4K. Premix also helps.

@@EvLSpectre The amount of dead examples with tip seal failure on eBay is frightening. Almost all seem to have hot start issues or have just had a donor engine fitted if actually running. It's a shame as I think they're cool cars but I'd rather not risk it.
Anecdotal examples usually aren't very representative of what the average user will face. Hence why you can find literally any car with at least one horror story with one particular owner while for the most part they'll be perfectly reliable. I personally know a fair few owners who haven't had complete engine failure anywhere near as prematurely as 6k miles. Mine took a lot more than 60k for even modest engine failure. A lot of it an come down to user error, keeping up on oil changes and checking the oil regularly is important for RX-8 owners which is where many issues owners have spring up from, but with any car you can find stories where nothing seems to work.
@ Unfortunately they do require basic maintenance to keep going and for most people that's too much, especially compared to piston engined vehicles which can be ragged around and almost never maintained with few issues until a long time in. The only real thing to keep up on maintenance wise regularly with an RX-8 is checking oil levels and keeping it topped up, which is why you'll find so many that do have hot start issues from being poorly lucked after. If you were to buy one, find a garage that deals with them (like Rotary Revs in Leeds, UK) and get a compression test on it before you buy it, saves a lot of time and money in the long run.. and if you still want to go ahead with it, having a compression test can save you big when you're bargaining. Then, it can be rebuilt and as long as you keep that minimum maintenance then you have a car with excellent handling and a decent bit of speed for way cheaper than your sports car. For clarity, I have one myself that has nearly 10k miles since I got it rebuilt having bought it for cheap with poor compression and have had 0 problems since: imgur.com/a/luHPYva I've never looked back on the purchase.
@ On RUclips alone, there are many examples of dealer maintained RX8 with prematurely failed seals at under 100,000 km, some at even lower km. The problem is that the fanboys will say that seal failure is normal wear and tear. If so, that's a very complicated and expensive repair for normal wear and tear. And they attribute seal failure as "driver error" because they usually blame drivers for pushing the engine too hard or not revving it enough. Don't get me wrong, I love the RX-7. I am just referring to the RX-8 that is being advertised as being reliable.

Gotta love that 2 toned paint job...... passenger side backseat stripes is a weird flex 😁

Epic! In nearly 6 years, I never had more than 240 miles from a tank in my 231, so i genuinely thought this was impossible!
I honestly love vids like this, to test a car on fuel economy etc.
Love the vids guys, not gonna say keep up the good work as you guys always keep it the best.

No Pistons were harmed during making this video

Sorry guys but I got 422 miles out of my rex in 2015! Route was Northampton - M1 - Leeds - M62 - Manchester - M6 - Birmingham - M40 - London - M25/M1 to Newport Pagnell services, driving a solid 60 mph the whole way except for a few roadwork sections which were 50. Set off at 9 pm, arrived at Newport Pagnell 4.25 AM. Your mistake was taking your journey into the morning rush hour and Scottish hills - you'd have got another 20/30 miles out of it otherwise! I was trying to make it back to Northampton but bottled it 15 miles short, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have made it though :'D
@SunzOffski
That's actually pretty good for an Impreza 😁
Great Video. My hands even got a lil sweaty in the last minutes of the video. Good Job guys and good job Felix

That was quite incredible.
I don't get any more than 370 mile to a full tank in my M140i.
Cheers!
Congrats! Mines almost at 128,747km on mine. It runs great still, and I premix still gotta check compression.
@@skylerbond56 never used premix since it's not 100% clear if it helps or not
@@gerkav1008 It won't hurt it so it's best to have a preventative measure in my opinion.
@@skylerbond56 for the last 35 years I've never used anything more than factory specs, in all my vehicles (cars, motorcycles). I don't disagree with you and I hope your engine will last long. I really believe the secret for the wankel engine is to use it wisely, not as a normal car and not as a super car.

Hello, I'm Felix, the RX7, thanks for taking me on a road trip with you even though it was really tiring.
Is it just me or is this video from before the engine rebuild? It's just that it has the old exhaust on it.
I noticed that too. Isn't it kinda weird to do hypermiling with a shot engine?
First Name Last Name it’s even better that way.
And the fogged headlights... and it seems odd to try hypermiling in a car tuned specifically to waste fuel to make flames.
kinda weird, but at the same tine why not. broken engine produces less power, so it should use less fuel, right?
@@jhnswr broken engine=no compression=bad mpg
Take your e46 estate to the nurgburgring already!!
I had an RX8 for about 4 months, 8mpg.. I had to get rid of it, had 60k on the clock i didnt want to drive anywhere I always expected it to blow up. The saving grace for this car is the styling and chassis it handles so well.
Well, massive thanks for alex and felix. You two have done incredible things. Haaah!! Take that rotary haters.
You think this is bad? I have a 1999 nissan patrol with a 100 liter tank and i filled it up once and tried to go to another city which was 250 KILOMETERS away... I failed at 190. Your rotary is a toyota yaris to me.
yeah you have a fuel leak dude lmao
Wtf. I got an Audi A4 2001 with 70l of tank (5l is reserve, so you typically fill up 65l) and I reach 800-900km with it. I really don't understand how this is special...
You have a fuel leak
Is that the small diesel with 89HP? my dad has an early A4 (M-95) with the 89hp engine, that wasn't the most refined diesel, but if you just sat behind a lorry (at what the speedo claimed was 60MPH) it could do some pretty impressive MPG figures.
there is no fuel leak anywhere believe me i check it all the time because it's seriously unbelievable
Nice one Alex I was one on the forum who thought this would never be possible! I average around 200 miles on mine per tank so 400+ is insane! Great video as always keep up that Rotary love
Thanks Tom, hope the rest of the OC guys are enjoying the series too.

That's a push but possible, with lots of easy driving.. Most I've ever got is around 320, cause its so hard not to floor it especially on motorways or long open roads or lovely bendy roads... In fact any clear road...
Love my rx8 one of the best cars I've driven, and I've been thru quite a few and driven expensive sports cars... So cheap to buy, expensive to keep but to get an equivalent the price would be 10 times.
Same here. 318miles when the fuel light came on. Mostly dull motorway @70ish but a little 2nd and 3rd gear blatting over the moors though. Couldn't resist after such a dull drive.
Still miss my RX8.

Agreed! I loved driving it like i was running from the police. Its actually a lot of fun to drive through the mountains too. Like you said lots of turns and hills. Im by no means a professional behind the wheel. But i knew that car well enough to drift it in certain places.
@@eriklehnsherr5784 I love the drifting.... When I first bought it thought I take off the traction fully.. Wasn't quite expecting it to drift quite that easy having exchanged it for a shit old piece of shit was a bit to heavy on the gas... I got done by the police, in unmarked car.. Stopped me then less than 1minute later I'm surrounded by 6 coppers 3 cars... Anyway got away with speeding only cause I forgot the bloody limit so I was 10mph out.. So fucked myself like a total idiot... Ended up in court with a list of charges as long as my arm but thankfully I had one of the best lawyers in the country and the lot got thrown out apart from my fucked up statement... VERY fun video! I always have sweaty hands and a pounding heart when watching tense hypermiling stuff. Oh and that interior is B-E-A-utiful.
As much as I miss the suicide doors, quirky interior, 9k rpm redline and the immense smoothness of that rotary engine, I'm so glad I don't have an RX-8 any more.
alex casually drinking liquid cocaine instead of coffee
Frkn ace mate, so tense watching this, used to have one of those and never seen anything over 180 per tank in London.
The traffic lights you got stuck at before the garage, I lived in the house directly next to them.. 😂
And the V8 was a diesel with 2 turbo chargers.
That'll always be more efficient than a rotary.
You should have don't this Edinburgh to London, that way it's all down hill ;)

"I've done your request, now gimme a drink of that 92. Ohhh yes."
A pop bang map probably isn't the best thing for mpgs lol

*engine?
I love how Alex is slowly going crazy through the journey
Why old exhaust?! Is this filmed before new engine?
Yeah, even with the low compression, the old engine has a lot better mpg than the new, especially since they tuned it to make flames...
If they used the new engine it wouldnt reach 300
Yawn why so?
I would assume they detuned (for mileage) and or shot this video first but released it later because they needed to gain a following for Felix with the build videos, hence we are more willing to watch this.

@@HarryG98 Don't know. Tell me about your experience.

Is this video older than the others?
The exhoust pipes are still small in this video
We shot this a few back, yes
Yeah I think he must have done this during the run in period maybe after they did the rebuild. He probably went back to rotary revs on the way back down they shot the tuning video. I don't think he would have made this trip on a tank after they put that tune on it to make flames out the exhaust.
@@VidzVideo that would be ridiculously bad for the engine if this is the case. When running in a rebuilt rotary it needs to have different RPM loads put on it, keeping it at 3k RPM during the run in period won't do the engine any good.
@@hayesmeadowyeah. what I meant was the period of time between the rebuild and then him going back where they did the tune
@@hayesmeadow engine was well run in before we shot this video so don't panic 😅
@@EvLSpectre
The amount of dead examples with tip seal failure on eBay is frightening.
For clarity, I have one myself that has nearly 10k miles since I got it rebuilt having bought it for cheap with poor compression and have had 0 problems since: imgur.com/a/luHPYva
I've never looked back on the purchase.
I had a 2004 model. My best was roughly 250 miles in a tank. Usually it was 200 miles between fill-ups but never went bone dry.
