The beauty of high revving engines like the rotary is that engine torque does not matter. Engine torque only matters as a component of power when talking about performance; it's something to consider when talking about transmission design or efficiency. It's wheel torque that matters, and if you've got a high revving engine you can just use shorter gears.
Well it highly depends on application. Horsepower is a function of torque, you can’t make horsepower without torque but you need to be able to rev to go fast. Take for example a diesel (I’m talking stock) they make massive torque figures but because they’re very slow to rev they don’t really do speed. On the flip side, having a strong torque curve gives you more horsepower at a broader RPM range. Meaning your average (not peak) horsepower will be higher.
Finally someone that understands that revs alone OR torque alone are meaningless figures. It all boils down to the gearing used. And for power you need both torque and revs. And it's always a tradeoff situation.. the higher the revs, the lower torque you're gonna have, because it means it's a engine with lower stroke, thus rotating faster, but having less radius on the crankshaft, thus producing less torque (a force applied at a distance)
and they often need to idle higher, doe to the lower torque as well. I see it more as a percentage of the rev range used, and on that level, it is the same as a lower reving eng

Typical comment from someone who would have folks believe it’s a miracle it runs at all. Have owned mine for 14+ years and still waiting for my first engine problem. Most reliable car I’ve ever owned.
Another awesome episode. I have to say the Rx8 is one of the easiest rwd cars i've driven on track, they're so forgiving and the grip is unbelievable. Stick a set of track tyres on it and they're pretty much unbeatable on a tight twisty track.
Have only found your channel today and have loved the RX8 series, I picked up my first RX8 about six months ago not really knowing much about them other than the Rotary engine and that a friend had one back in the day. Have learnt show much about the car watching your channel and like felix it needs so TLC. 402 miles on a tank is amazing, mine is somewhat shy of that! Thanks again and give up the good work!!
And this is why I love my 8. It's fast where I like it fast. It's hard to beat diving into corners with 30mph warning signs at 70-80mphs and not squeaking a tire. All you need is a nice set of tires. Nitto NT05 in my case, but any comparable tire take the car another level higher in the corners.
@AYE OK SURE go back and watch the previous videos look which way they go round tight corner before the straight. I think you need to be abit more honest..
Vlad Mihai The mazda is light sports car, but it is mainly because of the track. He barely got out of second gear. On longer and faster track there will be bigger difference.
Vlad Mihai That doesn't matter. Its a 230hp car, so it will accelarate as fast as any other car with similar power/weight. Check the times on the top gear track and see the difference.
@@nikolal.4502 It does matter from an engineering point of view. Such a small engine means it takes less space, can be mounted as far back as possible, and the nose of the car is not heavy, hence the great steering that Alex is talking about. I know that from a physics point of view, power to weight is all that matters and also grip, but still, it is impressive.
After this series. You have made want to buy an RX8 (if I had the money) and get the engine rebuilt by the guys at Rotary Revs. That RX8 sounds awesome around the track.

I love my rx8. Warm her up before you get on it. Premix a lil bit each fill up, and do oil changes every 3k with conventional oil. It's a reliable race car, and practical. One of a kind!! People dont realize how great they are until they actually drive one.
In my quest for quicker lap times, I find my self sliding sideways out of turn 9 at Hallet Motor Racing Circuit, a corner affectionately known as "the Bitch". Struggling for rear end grip in the 2002 Camaro, I spot in the corner of my eye a Mazda Rx8 pointing directly at my passenger side door only about a cars length away. Father in the passenger seat screaming "slow down!", I must cede my position on track to the clearly superior grip of the sadly forgettable outside the track, Mazda Rx8. For when I get back on the front straight, the V8s power will once again have it's revenge.
In 2003 when the RX-8 came out with double wishbones and rear multi-link there was no competitor for the money for chassis/handling. Not much has actually changed but nobody cares because of power. Would have been as iconic as the RX-7 with 250-280 genuine HP that could be tuned for more. It wasn't to be.
Been considering replacing my miata with an rx8. The miata is fun don't get me wrong but no tcs makes it terrifying in rain and icy conditions. The top being a convertible does not seal the best making it incredibly loud on the highway and gets condensation in the interior on the windows which is frustrating as it causes visibility issues. I also just wish it had a bit more room and wasnt as small, which the rx8 solves most of those problems for me. Its a 220 something horsepower engine and a 6 speed giving me a little extra range as far as top speed goes, its much newer, its a sealed driver's cockpit, and its got 4 seats. Not to mention sounds great and a nice high rpm redline, They appear super tunable I just can't get over what everyone says about them and how unreliable they seem to be, especially since Itd be a daily for me (Not like I drive far every day but itd add up)

the best part was "oh crap, CUT..!!" very good episode!!! also thanks for the street ported / bridge ported one
You can have fun in rx8 until the oil burns but with the mx5 you can have for days!
premix
And really doesnt use that much 1/2 quart of oil per three tanks of fuel
You can refill oil like you refill fuel, there's nothing stopping you from driving for days in one..
Ive had petrol BMWs that burned more oil than the RX8, you clearly never owned one, people say the same things, gets boring.
No we don't say f instead of th my guy. American gang Unite
I love the practicality of the RX-8 with the hidden back doors. I knew someone with one when they first came out and it was a fun car, but had a bunch of issues. Some were small, such as needing a new battery, but eventually they got a BMW instead (and had different issues).
LEGO airship Ha! The little Renesis is the heart of the 8 and the best thing about the car.
Have had one for 12 years, that's literally the only problem I've ever had with it. Nobody has been able to figure out the battery draining.
didnt it also beat both of the bmws? impressive car, they also have a huge amount of torsional rigidity
That's a cliffhanger ending lol
I own an RX8 PZ for the past 2 years. Never had an issue and I always do short journeys in the city. Compression is still high and I change the oil (semi-synthetic 10w40) once a year. If you look after the engine, it is fine.
The answer is *fun*
Alex, when you're changing the clutch, you should get a lightened flywheel. Get the revs up quicker..
yes, this is a great mod on the RX8, but a bit late now he did all the engine out stuff already! unless the clutch dies soon....
Damn now you need a celica gt four.
Ye
Pascal Kirchmayer
For real. My ST-205 and my SW20T would fucking destroy these cars.
False.
*insert Celica GT-FOUR drifting around the hairpin*
hi dere
This has always been my favorite but it’s extreme overkill in this conversation.

4 questions:1:who owns the silver mx5 and will there be a series on it? 2:when is 2 guys 1 car going to return? 3:will ethan ever have a project car?4: will you do an update on Phil?
He did say who the owner of the MX-5 was...
Nice driving, but needs more EUROBEAT!!!! 😎 🚗💨
In the bridge vs street port vid you didn’t have many good exhaust clips PLEASE GIVE US SOME STRAIGHT EXHAUST CLIPS OF THE BEAUTIFUL POPS AND CRACKLES!!!!!!
How much fun is repairing a RX-8 on the race track? (This is a joke btw)
Way more fun than driving a diesel. 🙂
Typical comment from someone who would have folks believe it’s a miracle it runs at all. Have owned mine for 14+ years and still waiting for my first engine problem. Most reliable car I’ve ever owned.
@@Saboda53 You know it's a joke. Right?
@AYE OK SURE I don't have a car.
@AYE OK SURE What about rotary diesels?
Next build an S14 or S15 Silvia? Cheap, handle well, easy to get power etc!
I love rx-7 FD than a rx-8 give a like if you do😍😍💓💓
Why aren’t you driving Phil rather than that shit box?
Another awesome episode.
I have to say the Rx8 is one of the easiest rwd cars i've driven on track, they're so forgiving and the grip is unbelievable.
Stick a set of track tyres on it and they're pretty much unbeatable on a tight twisty track.
can't trust someone with a cellphone for lap times
For people thinking its as quick as the 330d and type R etc looks like the RX8 and Mx5 did a different layout of the track
@AYE OK SURE go back and watch the previous videos look which way they go round tight corner before the straight. I think you need to be abit more honest..
Did you use DSC? or turned it off on RX-8?
Anyone know where to find the sticker at 1:17 ???
Im looking at 08 rx8 6speed i really want it🙏🙏
"Barely enough torque to lift a man off the toilet" are probably the greatest phrase that's ever been said
haha yeah i burst out laughing then too...
that's not herbera or whatever it is
that's the car throttle test track
So, let me understand. BMW M3, V8 400 ish HP did 37.1s and this mazda with a 1.3L rotary did 37.3s? Wow
Vlad Mihai The mazda is light sports car, but it is mainly because of the track. He barely got out of second gear. On longer and faster track there will be bigger difference.
@@nikolal.4502 I get this, but that is still very impressive considering that rotary is so tiny and has almost no torque.
Vlad Mihai Yes, I meant about the torque, otherwise the car handles great.
MX-5 vs ae86 would be a good test on which is more fun
good luck finding an ae86...
I'd choose a Mk3 2.0 MX-5 if you want the best of both worlds.
Final question over all would you pick the mx5 or the rx8?
Alex is cheating on phill!
He drives another mx-5!
If i tell this to phil he would cry and leave you! 😂
After this series. You have made want to buy an RX8 (if I had the money) and get the engine rebuilt by the guys at Rotary Revs.
That RX8 sounds awesome around the track.
Because Pettit Racing catback! 8)
that rx-8 is my dream. ill drive my mazda 6 for now.
ok, I officially no longer hate the rx-8
Fcukin well funny! Alex is a DRIVING GOD 👌🏻😉😂
How much fun? well that's easy.....ALL OF IT, EVERY LAST BIT OF IT!!
Alex : swears
Subtitles : *MUSIC*
To help with you been loose in the seat you can buy a cg lock from the owners club shop. It makes the bottom belt part like a plane belt and keeps it locked in place. I haven't fitted mine yet but using it on the RX8 track day. shop.rx8oc.co.uk/CG-Lock/p664353_8044331.aspx
Not to mention sounds great and a nice high rpm redline, They appear super tunable I just can't get over what everyone says about them and how unreliable they seem to be, especially since Itd be a daily for me (Not like I drive far every day but itd add up)
rx8 on coilovers, semislicks and better brakes will be a very good track car but mx5 will always be more fun!
"Oh crap" Alex 2019
