  • Honda seems to be done playing it safe in the world of hybrids, proof of that is the new Clarity Plug In Hybrid which is the first no-compromises plug-in family sedan. With interior room and comfort like an Accord or Camry, 42 miles per gallon and nearly 50 miles of electric range, this is finally the car that will do everything your current sedan will do with a focus on fuel economy and lower operating costs. Oh, and you'll get to drive in the HOV lane in some states too. What do I mean by no compromises? I mean an honest to goodness trunk, 212 horsepower, a wide and comfortable back seat, standard active safety tech and a price tag just $800 more than an Accord Hybrid (after tax credits). Why would you buy anything else? I'm not sure either.

      Of course not. I have been watching his videos for three years and haven't purchased a vehicle in three years (and even then, the vehicle I purchased was 15 years old and not reviewed).

    Wow, no other RUclips auto reviewer packs so much pertinent info regarding the complex drivetrains of PHEVs into their reviews. That Clarity really is a no compromise mid-sized sedan, offering stellar fuel efficiency.

    We own the 2019 Clarity, which we purchased new in late 2018. We now have 35,000 miles on it and have only needed regularly scheduled maintenance. I wanted to comment that the battery regularly charges to over 50 miles of range during warmer months. This morning it read 54.8 miles of range.

    I am a 2018 Clarity PHEV owner, and I find your review spot on. I drove a Sonata PHEV prior to purchasing the Clarity and the trunk space was the deciding factor. The Sonata cabin was superior, electric range inferior; but the trunk was terrible. No pass through or fold down and a small space. My previous car was a 2011 Sonata HEV and the trunk space was an issue for me. The 2017 Sonata PHEV was a huge improvement on my 2011 Sontata HEV in terms of luxury and driving experience, they had addressed all of the issues I noticed with the Sonata PHEV except trunk space. With the Clarity my combined mileage (electric and gas) over 4300 km is 3.2 l/100 km and my highway mileage (cruising at 100 km/h) is around 5.0 l/100 km. What really impresses me about the car is that if you try hard to get good fuel economy, you are rewarded. Using the paddles and your driving habits have an effect on your mileage; more so than with my Sonata HEV. So far, very impressed with the Clarity...and the seats are OK by me.

    Apart from all the details you provide, you also clearly state your opinions. You'd be surprised (maybe not) at how many channels don't actually state their opinions, because (mistakenly) they go into risk-management mode and try and avoid pissing anyone off. But they actually achieve the converse, because most people want to hear an opinion. With back-up. Well done you.

    Great review Alex. You have the best car reviews on the internet.
    The Clarity is a perfect fit for us. We remain in EV mode for weeks at a time, forcing the engine on only when we rarely leave town. It is luxurious, super quiet, rides nice, comfortable, and smooth. It's a great car around town and on long highway trips. A lumbar feature would be nice as well as a few other minor improvements, but overall it is a great car. We charge ours from the sun so near zero cost for fuel.

      It is not for me. I was surprised that there were no read sensors. But the rearview camera is great and I can get very, very close to objects.

      I've never had them so I don't know what I'm missing. The backup camera isn't 180 degrees but it is pretty wide.

    Thank you for your review, I just picked one up and so far have been loving it. Electric only range has been a bit lower than anticipated, but still able to perform most drives on electric only and not use a drop of gas 😊

    Hey Alex, these reviews are great. Far more information than even a Honda reviewer gives, and you do it for all makes.
    I very much appreciate the explanation of the drive trains for cars you're reviewing, I would rather be informed, and I love technical aspects of vehicles.

      Can you make sure that when you review other Honda hybrids that you explain the regeneration paddles and it's spare tire? I think that these are vague in any honda publication, and are important functionally to me. No compromise also means having that spare tire, to me.

    Excellent review. Very informative and less trash talk about its looks. The sales rep at Honda confused me by saying that this car cannot drive in just EV mode. It would have to be in Hybrid mode the entire time which made no sense to me. Thanks for the informative review. Honda should make all their sales reps watch this video to get informed on what they are selling.

    I have a 2017 volt and love it. My average gas mileage according to Chev. is 201 miles per gallon of gas purchased. When fully charged it almost always says 60 miles available sometimes has high as 68 not the 53 on specs.
    In addition when doing local driving it always gives more than the miles sated, often about 20% more. So this needs to be taken into consideration when buying a plug in car.
    Biggest problem if you buy an all electric car is that I find many broken charging stations so if you were depending on electric only you might face some challenging times.

      Don Graffam it’s not worth it to charge at those stations unless you are working or having major issues at that place. Just charge at home

    Alex - GREAT JOB !! I love the compare and contrast with near equivalent cars. And you do a great job with the detail, which a lot of reviewers seem to have lost or gloss over.
    Just a suggestion... If you are referencing the United States as America, instead of Canada and the United States, I would suggest simply saying the United States.

    Just bought the Clarity last week, really the best PHEV in the bunch considering it's a real mid-size sedan. Love the back wheel skirts! No lumbar support needed, the seat is super comfortable for long rides. Volume knob is really no big deal as the touch screen control is very responsive. Street sign reading is really not that important if you pay attention driving on the road. You really have to own the car to know that the "dealbreakers" in some reviews are really not that big of a deal at all to someone who actually drives the car daily.

    In Ontario our $13k rebate makes the Clarity about $7k cheaper than the Accord Hybrid.

    I bought a Clarity PHEV 6 weeks ago, I plug it in when I can, so far I've been getting an average of 180 mpg, on workdays I only need about 35 miles to get to and from work, nice to have an electric car without the range anxiety, nice quiet comfortable ride.

      Are the seats hot in summer? I want ventilated seats and not many have them in a PHEV. I wonder how it will drive in snow and if the skirts will cause snow to get stuck?

      I have the base model, the seats are not hot in summer, I have not driven the car in winter but I don't believe the height will be an issue, being 4000 lbs should be very stable and get great traction with dedicated winter tires.

    The Honda Clarity plug-in is a great car for commuting. I drive over 23 miles one way and it only uses 1/3 of the battery. I don’t even need to charge the car when I get home because I have enough juice to drive to work next day. I still have a full tank of gas after a week of driving. The Honda Sensing works without gimmicks. I use the ACC with LKAS in traffic jams to ease drive.

    Alex, you a trooper for sticking it out in the rain. I have a 2008 Prius. I am looking to replace it. I appreciate your thoughts on the Clarity because, though I hate the styling, it is tough to argue with the roominess and mpg. My choices are the Prius Prime Advanced and base clarity. You review is helping me make a sound decision. Thank you.

      Before I got my Volt I drove a Clarity and there was a noticeable acceleration lag. So much I considered it dangerous when turning into traffic.

    Honda, GREAT JOB on the Clarity. Clearly, your data points and market research are spot on for the western market! You have found a great balance in performance, features, and design to ease people into the 21st century and the realities associated with peak fuel. As has been shared by many reviewers you have ingeniously cloaked hybrid tech in a package that makes that tech confidence inspiring and imperceptible in all the best ways.
    And, as a designer myself, I appreciate the finesse applied to (re)introduce drag reduction in a way that is purposeful and forward thinking, yet approachable. It is commendable how you are walking the consumer subtly into the future and the realities that are sure to come with, not in a dystopian or science fiction way, but instead in a way that lends familiarity and maybe even some hope.
    I look forward to watching vehicles like the Clarity PHEV evolve to adapt to some of our cultural norms, and simultaneously evolve the minds of consumers that will surely line up to purchase them! Keep up the good work!

    Hi Alex. Spectacular review. The only thing missing is the passing acceleration - is it adequate - let's say from 50 mph to 70 mph? And as an aside, you can keep your phone out of view by putting it in the console armrest, but your cable will be exposed. But the phone will be out of sight.
    Great review. Love your reviews. And I've ordered my Clarity Hybrid base. Should get it in the next month or two.

      Give it another try. On the ICE, this car is ok. On electric, it is great. And it is easy to use just electric within the battery range.

      Scott Gruber - You can always charge the EV battery with the engine via HV mode, and use one of thousands of free EV chargers (for added free EV range). 👍🏿

    Wow! What a great review! I’m looking to get the 2109 Touring version. Any changes in the 2019. I like my, actually LOVE, my last two Volts mainly because of the EV range. In the summer, I would get 62 miles. In a year, I’ve visited the gas station maybe once, not including said trips. Love the base Honda Sense. Wish all cars would add it base. There would be less accidents and way less fender benders. I am only not getting the Volt this go round because there will be no 2020 sending the residuals out of whack and making the lease majorly unattractive so I think I’m landing here. Your review is emboldening my de ision.

    If Honda could just fix the looks, I would purchase one. Its EV-only range is perfect for my daily commute to work plus any trip to the grocery store. The gasoline backup option is handy and the MPG is impressive for such a large vehicle. The interior is nice and roomy for passengers too.
    I'm hoping Honda will keep the Clarity plug-in as part of their line-up and just improve on the exterior like they did with the Insight.
    I've been going back and forth between plug-in hybrid and electric for my next vehicle (probably in about 3 years), so I'm keeping an eye on Honda. Looks like they are closest to what I want, but right now the exterior is enough to make me strongly consider their competition.

    Honda added a pretty compelling car to its stables - it has 90% of the EV credentials & range as the established Volt but makes less concessions in interior volume, an actual 5th seat and a noticeably nicer/higher quality interior. For all intent and purposes, I think the Clarity PHEV is a smarter buy than the Accord Hybrid.

    Thanks for a great review as I bought the 2018 Clarity last week. One thing I learned is not to let the battery run out when your in Eco Mode as the engine revs up and the 103 Hp tries to keep the 2 ton car going. If you go to HV mode to hold what ever charge is in the battery and go back to EV I noticed the engine still keeps running. Is this because of cold temps or will eventually revert back to electric only. So far I love the car and although the Volt was my first choice its a lot bigger and very comfortable.

    Also should note that the USA Clarity does not have a battery heater like a Volt or i3, so in the cold it won't get as good of EV range. Canadian Clarity models do get a battery heater.

      AFAIK, Yes, all Clarity PHEVs use use active liquid cooling. However, unless you buy a Canadian model, Honda omits the battery coolant heater. There is no way to actively heat the battery on USA model , so in very cold weather, the battery performance will be lower. Perhaps Honda is using a chemistry that is less susceptible to cold temps.
      The owners manual does recommend that owners in very cold climates keep the car in a garage though, so it may just be an engineering compromised to hit their price targets.

    Drove a ‘18 Clarity Touring today. While driving in EV mode, I liked the smooth power delivery, noise isolation, and road manners better than the new Accord Touring. The lack of lumbar support, volume knob, and street sign reading were deal-breaking omissions. This could be the sweetest car on the market with a refresh to bring it up to the Accord’s infotainment and lumbar standard.

    Great review Alex!. A techie question: Can the AC motor draw the full 181 hp from the battery alone in EV mode? - ie, Can that big 17kwh battery actually discharge fast enough to feed it all the oomph it needs and not fire up the engine? (assuming a relatively full battery) I Love the styling, btw.

    Excellent review. I have size 13 feet and always wonder how the floor space on the driver side will feel, especially the left foot. Some cars have their wheel wells crowding the left foot to where I have to pull it back and over towards the door to get some relief. Nobody seems to cover this particularly annoying feature of cars, maybe they're all bad. but my 1984 nissan 300 zx has a good left foot rest that is over far enough that it is relaxing to drive. In test driving a few Prius models, I find they have different amounts of space for the left foot.

    When I bought my Clarity, I had the wheels changed for 17", which gives about 5% savings. When the roads are bad in spring, the probability of breaking a tire and a wheel is less than with 18-inch wheels. In Quebec City, winters are hard .

    Just a reminder to all, you got 50mpg in hybrid mode in the Optima. I still think Honda has the edge with the trunk and price of course, but I didn't hear you mention worrying about mountain climbs :)

    Fabulous review, Alex. I Just test drive this Clarity. Truly a fabulous ride. *Bar none* excellent from all other PHEVs I’ve tested. I wish the blind spot safety feature would be installed on both left/right sides. I guess I’ll have to buy one of those round tiny mirrors and attach it to the left mirror. I am so impressed by what Honda has done here. Do you think the resale value will be much higher on this one than the Ioniq or the Prius? @Alex on Autos.

    Alex, great review, but you are stuck on lumbar support like I am with ventilated seats. I get it will take up power but I want my cooled seats and not many have it, only the Niro or really expensive PHEV's. I wonder how it will drive in snow and if the skirts will cause snow to get stuck?

    How did Chevy Volt let Honda Clarity beat it so handily at its own game?

      Remember that car design is a game of "one-uppsmanship" so you'f expect a new car to be class leating if not class topping. So don't be surprised if the next Volt beats the Clarity by an MPG or two the next time around.

      Thanks for the reply. Agreed and the new 7.2 kW charging system on the 2019 Chevy Volt goes a ways toward improving it somewhat (although still comes standard with a 3.6 kW) and it is probably a response to cars like the Honda Clarity with its 6.6 kW charger. It seems to me most car companies are very unsure how to approach this changing market. I'm not sure if GM is even making money on each Volt it sells. I have heard that on the Bolt it is losing money and that is the reason they have not "plugged" it much, perhaps the reason they also made it unattractive. In any case I hope you are right, and that Chevy has a real Volt CUV waiting in the wings for 2020 or 2021 since that is where the market is moving too. Frustrating to see GM work on the Volt since 2010 and get out done like this by Honda. I'm just very impressed by the size of the Clarity for the efficiency, although I wouldn't exactly call it beautiful either. My best.

    Wondering why they don't have full blind spot detection (just the right side camera view) and rear cross traffic alert on the Clarity. These are availble on the Volt.

    I’m confused. He said on the right of that we find controls for the infotainment system and it looks like it’s on left. Is image flipped?

    I’ve had my Clarity for 4 months now. Love it. You compare it unfavorably with the fuel economy of the Prius Prime, but I find that my day to day driving is all within the Clarity’s EV range, but frequently exceed the Prime’s more limited EV range. So, if I had a Prime, I would be burning some gas most days, where as with the Clarity I only use gas when I take a road trip, or take my wife to the outlet mall that’s 30 miles out of town! I haven’t put gas in the tank since I came back from a road trip in October, so that’s about 2 months now. I don’t expect to need to buy gas until my next road trip in April. Should I worry about unused gas in the tank that long?

      I would add fuel stabilizer or when you add gas find a gas station that sells ethanol-free (marine) gas. Also, if you don't use gas that often don't fill the tank all the way... the reduced weight of carrying less gas may improve your economy.

    I just bought a volt. I looked at both that and the Clarity. While everything he said in this video was true, the Clarity doesn’t lock/unlock from the rear doors (small I know, but a requirement for me). Also, I can not get passed the rear wheel skirts. I just don’t like the look. Other things that are subjective: I liked infotainment system much better on the volt, and I thought it was much more fun to drive. Both are great cars and the clarity will only force other manufacturers to step up their games. Thanks for the great review.

      The Clarity can be set to lock as you walk away from the car, and unlock when you approach the car.

    Unless the HOV rules change, my 2014 Accord Plugin will be parked and Ill buy the Clarity Plugin this Jan 2019 to get red stickers.. I'll miss my HUD and my adj lumbar support, but it will be nice to trade 15 miles EV for 48. Also, with my 6.6 kW battery and 2.0 L engine---I avg 44.5 mpg for the 77K miles so it should be an even trade. Pretty much everything in your video less auto braking is currently on my 2014.

    Hi! Current Clarity PHEV (Touring) owner here - this video is one of the things that helped me make the decision between the available PHEVs available. I definitely like to drive my Clarity like an "EV with a backup plan" and find that I can drive to and from work and do some shopping fairly comfortably for 2 days on a single charge. As my apartment complex's EV charging station is about 1/2 mile away from my unit, I'm glad to know that I can go without charging in inclement weather or when I've got a lot of stuff to take to my room. As you noted, the regen is a bit weird, but I've grown to like how Honda handled it. More on that below.
    I was primarily split between the Clarity and Volt as I know someone with an Optima Hybrid (2012). They take great care of their Optima, but the steering wheel material is flaking off, the seat cushion has gone flat, and the hybrid drive system (even after numerous firmware upgrades) is iffy at best. I've also had issues with both Kia and Hyundai's 'Infinity' sound systems - I've never been able to tune them to suit my tastes and the Bluetooth modules can't handle modern high-end audio codecs (and at least on the 2017 Santa Fe have some serious issues with WOW over Bluetooth).
    I was almost going to buy the Volt because of some of the safety features and its hatch style trunk, but the dealers nearest to where I live aren't Volt certified and, due to Chevy regulations, can't purchase tools to service the Volt and they can't order Volts for sales or test drives. Since the local mechanics I trust won't touch a car with any form of electric drive, I don't feel comfortable driving a car that I'll have to take 90 miles for even routine service. Add to that Honda's legendary reliability and service (even flying Honda engineers from Japan to diagnose and fix an Insight that the American service teams couldn't figure out), and the choice was clear to me - if I want a PHEV that isn't likely to break down and leave me with the choice of 'Scrap it' or 'tow it 90 miles', I've gotta go with Clarity.
    In the 5 months I've been driving my Clarity, I do miss having adjustable lumbar support and have had a few issues with Android Auto which I think would've been fixed by using the newer audio system. Those are my only gripes. I never use sun roofs since I get sun burnt quite easily and had to apply heavy tint to the sunroof in my last car to avoid getting burnt too badly. The cargo and seating space are big upgrades from my old Acura RSX (coupe/hatch), and due to my driving style, I get better than EPA rated fuel economy at least 70% of the time.
    More on the regen paddles and braking: I can drive my Clarity like a normal car, coast like a normal car, then up the regen for light braking to adjust speed or following distance. The regen adds a good bit of force to the brake pedal. Now, it's second nature to up the regen merely feather the brakes until I need to come to a stop in situations like highway off-ramps and city driving. I've had one or two emergency situations where I've needed to brake hard and, with max regen + traditional brakes, I've found the braking distance to be pretty good for a 2-ton car!

    The gas engine in this car has "sequential multi-point" fuel injection. Honda has had one version or another of this since at least 2008. In the case of the 2018 Clarity, what does this mean exactly? Will the intake valves gum up with oil from the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system?

    Great review. Our current ride is a Prius V, with reclining seats. Will the seats recline in this car? or move fore/aft? We have a 10-year-old boy who likes to use these functions. My major gripe with the Prius V is still the loud road noise. Other than this, it's been a good car.

      Sadly sedans dont recline. But if you test drove this car its whisper quiet, especially in EV. Typically Dealers dont charge these cars but if you do a "Charge mode" at the beginning of our driver, you can EV for alittle on the 2nd half and experience the serenity.

    While I know American's are anti hatchback (even though they buy CUVs like mad), I think the Clarity should have been a lift back rather than this strange trunk implementation. Maybe Honda needed the additional structural pieces that come with a trunk for safety reasons?

      Yeah there is extra struts built in there to prevent a hatch. Likely used to protect the Hydrogen fuel cell tank in the trunk which needed alot of protection.

      On the plus side, if you have a trunk like this, contactless grocery pickup, such as is currently recommended for higher risk populations in many countries, is improved over a hatchback where you don't have an easy way of preventing bulk air exchange between the trunk area and the passenger compartment during loading. This is one reason why I'm regretting not having gotten this car jnstead of the liftback Nissan LEAF I got instead in 2018. Don't get me wrong, I quite like my car, but in the current circumstances it's a problem, albeit not one I'd have anticipated.

    I've got a Volt and have been very happy with it, averaging 142 MPG lifetime. I would consider a Clarity EV with 250 MPC for $35k, but alas, Honda in its wisdom gives the EV only 90 miles range per charge. The Clarity also lacks a hatchback, which is a huge mistake. If I were buying a PHEV today, it would be the Clarity, but what I really want is an HR-EV with 250 MPC and full suite of safety features, for $30k.

    I went to a dealership that had one in stock in December 2017 and asked the salesman a question about the hybrid battery warranty.
    Since I had a bad experience with the hybrid battery in my 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid (there was a class action lawsuit), I wanted to know whether or not there was a warranty covering the battery capacity. The salesman did not know, but said that he would call me back. When he called back, he said that there was no warranty covering the capacity of the battery. I told him that I was not interested without a battery capacity warranty due to my experience with a Civic Hybrid. Just to be sure, I wrote Honda about this. They re-confirmed that there is no battery capacity warranty. If anyone has contrary information, please post a link.

      I really had to dig around the website, but the electrical components (incl. the battery) are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. Talking to salespeople about green cars is really a disappointing experience among all brands. They don't know their products, and you can tell they have no interest in selling them.

      Is that the warranty for defects? If it were a capacity warranty, they would have to specify the percent of the original capacity that they were guaranteeing. For example, a minimum of 65% of the original capacity within 8 years/100,000 miles. As for the knowledge of sales people, I find it rare that they can tell me something that I don't already know via my own research.

    i do agree with you Alex that i'd rather have fully adjustable seats than extra EV range but but the worthless trunk in the Optima is a deal breaker and the Optima is just overall a more dated design with interior that looks 10 years old whereas Clarity interior is completely modern
