Toyota Prius Versus Honda Insight - Japan's Hybrid War!

  • Although not quite the fierce rivalry as the Camry and Accord, the Toyota Prius is facing some stiff competition from arch rival Honda. For 2019, the Insight is back for its 3rd generation, armed with more attractive styling, more rear seat space, and over 50 MPG. Can it topple the hybrid king from Toyota?

You would have to pay me to take one. Its ugliness negates any positive qualities it has. Prius sales are way down compared to a few years ago. As always, great review, Sofyan! When the current generation prius first came out I wasn't a huge fan of the design choices Toyota made, but I applauded Toyota for their boldness. Now that the all-new Insight is out, the Prius looks somewhat awkward and less upscale (from the exterior mainly).
    The average buyer in this class probably won't take styling too seriously though because the main reason they're shopping in the segment is for fuel efficiency. Therefore, the Prius edges out the Insight (comparing top-of-the-line models to top-of-the-line models) and the Prius offers a more spacious cargo area.
    Overall, they are both pretty good vehicles, but I'll probably have to agree with you and pick the Honda mainly due to its lower starting price and the overall less offensive (and more mature) styling inside and out. As always, from one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work, Redline Reviews! 👍🏽

  • @GarlicGrinder9

    I think the Prius looks nice! I like the many corners and the unconventional shape, it's just more pleasing to look at! I personally don't like the generic look of the Insight. The Insight is very plain looking I cannot STAND the huge tablet and odd positioning of the shift lever in the Prius though. The screen is VERY obnoxious, I've driven the newer model and its very distracting. I personally am used to reaching next to me with my right hand to shift gears, but the lever is about a foot higher and sticks out perpendicular to the console which makes shifting very awkward, almost cumbersome. The chime is also fairly annoying after a few times. I've never driven the Insight, but I must say the screen looks nice. its big enough to see but not as obnoxious, and it's in an appealing looking position. Modern, but not intrusive. The thing I hate more than the Prius's wierd shift lever is the lack of one in the Insight. It's kind of off putting, and I can't always tell what I'm doing when pushing a button vs actually moving my arm. The seats on the Insight don't looks very nice from the back, they look like they'd squish your head forward, they look very uncomfortable even though they clearly aren't. as seen in the video.
    Mechanically the Prius looks simpler and more inviting under the hood which is nice for someone like me who is newer to cars and is learning to change fluids and such. The Insight's hood looks a bit more intimidating to work on, just visually. It could be that it is wider or the engine doesn't look as "flat", but either way I just like the Prius's overall aesthetic more despite the large screen, annoying chime and shift lever. I personally like that there isn't any play in the brakes. You press it, and it works. Same with the steering. It does what you tell it. I dont really mind the view from the back, it looks very cool without getting in the way too much. I love how quiet and non-intrusive it is.

You can also fit 3 car seats in the back of a Prius. But not an insight. The prius is also rated 54hwy, 52 City. But the way the prius system runs you can also get those numbers quite a bit higher. Yes it is. Camry is also an excellent car but does not have the ability to haul things like the Prius.
      To those who say that it is still a Honda.....well Honda is really more American than it is Japanese.
      I have driven Honda's.....many for over 500,000 miles. I now drive a 2018 Prius four. I don't care what the car looks like.....I like what it does....
      it gets way more mileage than the Insight when driven correctly. How do I know? I drove both for over a month each. My one brother bought the Insight and my other brother bought the Prius 4. I found the technology on the Prius is more established than the first year Insight. I never buy a first
      year car....ever. The Prius is now in its third year at the current design. It exceeds the MPG ratings more often than the Insight did. I found the Prius was more comfortable although the Insight interior I found to be of higher quality. They were both pretty quiet cars. They both are about the same as far as comfort goes.The Prius is known for being taxi's in NYC.....the reason why is they are so darned reliable. Proven technology.
      What pushed me towards the Prius was the ability to haul things, it is not a first year car and the ability to achieve higher MPG's if you work at it.
      The Insight, no matter how hard I tried, could not get above the posted MPG's on the sticker. The Prius, if driven with care, can get over 100 mpg's....
      one trip I did, which I went down roads that were under 50 MPH, I got an amazing 103 MPG's over 27 miles.

    I have a 2005 Prius. To be honest, over the years I've been pretty abusive to my Prius and she's always been so good to me! I've hit a few things, and even totaled her. She has never even so much as made a weird sound. I've owned a Chevy and a Ford in the past (Thinking about getting a Ford Focus? Don't.) but the Prius takes the cake. I also commute over 100 miles a day for work. Currently the display says I'm getting 56 MPG. My friends and I always make Prius jokes and laugh about its strange design, but honestly I love the jokes. My fiancé and his friends have much newer, nicer cars, but everyone wants to take the 20 year old tan Prius up to Maine for the 4th this year. Her name is Lil' Pri and she's ugly and she's covered in stickers and coffee stains and and she carries my bikes and all puts up with all my shit. 10/10 would recommend.

    People who drive hybrids, WANT it to look different. And no, Prius sales have not been hurt by its looks but because of fuel prices. We'll see if people want "normal" looking hybrids/electrics, but I doubt it. That's why Prius and Tesla are so popular in their respective segments.

    “They have kind of 16” wheels instead of kind of 15” wheels”. You bash the design of the Prius, then you say that taste is subjective, then you go back to bashing the design. You tend to waste more time on cosmetics, when you could have used to cover the technology. I think my favorite part was the tour of the cockpit. You pointed out how weird the Prius gauge cluster. The same gauge cluster that Toyota has used on the Prius since the second generation. I agree, the Prius is quirky. My issue is with how your reviews are so focused on your opinions, instead of empirical data.

    It's so dumb for the Prius to not utilize the area in front of the steering wheel to display useful information. You're just looking at plastic dash material. What a waste. The Insight digital display is quite good. Audi has the best solution in which Navigation information can be displayed in the display in front of the steering wheel.

    • @podunkis
      @podunkis 6 лет назад +1

      I have mixed feelings about this. I lower my tilt steering all the way down in my car because I find it more comfortable, but now the steering wheel obscures a large part of the speedometer and I can't tell how fast I'm going once I exceed 30 mph! A few cars have instrument clusters that move with the steering wheel tilt, but the ones I've seen have been pretty ugly. I would love to be able to display driving info on the center display, at least optionally.

    • @iakona23
      @iakona23 6 лет назад +1

      Maybe I could get used to looking at the center display on the dash all the time. I guess we are all creatures of habit to some degree. It just seems like a wasted space to have that area in front of the steering wheel to be blank.

      Every Prius model since 1997 has had the display more towards the middle, although I think this latest generation the speedometer readout is a little bit farther to the right then in previous models. I have a 2008 myself and the speedometer readout is almost directly in front of you at the very bottom of the windshield. Actually like it a lot more than the next two generations of Priuses. If I was buying a brand new hybrid I would probably look at a Hyundai ioniq, or the Kia Niro,.I don't really like sedans so for me the new Honda Insight is kind of a fail in that regard.

    for Pruis 43 Liters tank in city it can go for 614.3 miles or 990 km in dstance
    for honda insight it is only 40 liters tank. so it can go in city upto 540 miles in distance or 870 km
    if honda has same tank capacity then it will return in city over 580 miles or 934 km in distance and the difference will be 33 miles or 58 km
    so the benefit for honda you can fill it up lower by almost a gallon or 3 liters and there is no big difference in miles only 33 miles is nothing compared to high great looking car compared to the super ugly pruis>>>>>>>>. what do you think guys >

    The Insight's mechanical connection between engine and wheels is usually disengaged. Except at high speeds/low loads (freeway cruising on a level road) there is no mechanical connection. The engine only spins a generator. In a drag race situation you're being propelled by electric motors only. Both engine and batteries are dumping maximum current into the motors.

I think quite a few people are repeat buyers and wont take chance. On the new insight. And lets not forget the prius comes in three different configurations subcompact, sedan , and wagon.
