Toyota Prius Versus Honda Insight - Japan's Hybrid War!

- Опубликовано: 6 сен 2024
- Although not quite the fierce rivalry as the Camry and Accord, the Toyota Prius is facing some stiff competition from arch rival Honda. For 2019, the Insight is back for its 3rd generation, armed with more attractive styling, more rear seat space, and over 50 MPG. Can it topple the hybrid king from Toyota?
The insight looks like a small Accord. Good design
"A face that only a mother could love" = Prius
Aaron Jaggan lmao my mom likes minivans and she says the Prius is ugly
@@Datsun7705 same. I told my mom she should get a prius and she said she doesn't give a fuck what the mpg is, shed be embarrassed to drive it
TheRubberSoup lol
@@nahfam9716 ikr like if your going to get a Prius you’d have to get the newest one because it the least boring and least ugly one and it may or may not be a bad thing and you should get all the options or no option
love love love my 2007 Prius. 95k miles and $0.00 for repair. One trip to Toy dealer for a recall. That is it, dead-pan reliable. My experience with Honda is the same. 1980's Prelude ran 385k miles on the original clutch and was working fine the day I dold it.
Yes! 2010 Prius 126000 mi and 0 repairs. Nice car. It’s smaller than my ex 2004 diesel Jetta wagon, but Prius is driving. Jetta was constantly need something to repair. Still don’t understand why people buying that piece of junk
Just got the 2021 insight touring and its amazing! Whats new for this year is the blind spot monitoring and rear cross alert. Its oozing with tech, safety sense is standard. Interior is beautiful. Im getting 50MPG avg. ample power for my need. I dont mind the engine sound, beside EV kicks-in quite often so its silent always.
You know what's funny, Californians buys these for efficiency but drive the Prius like a sports car.
Double JJ but they still get mpg in the 40s 👌🏽
Supreme Etnel Is it worth the humiliation of driving a car that hideous though?
KentB27 If your serious about saving money yes; and the new prius’s don’t look that bad at all. it’s clearly a car to get from A to B efficiently why hate .
Supreme Etnel I'd just buy the much better looking Insight instead and not have to deal with friends and family making fun of me for buying an ugly car like a Prius. Or better yet I would get a Camry or Accord hybrid. Way better looking cars with all of the benefits of having a hybrid without the ugliness of the Prius. The Prius is soooooo ugly. You would have to pay me to take one. Its ugliness negates any positive qualities it has. Prius sales are way down compared to a few years ago. The current body style of Prius is so ugly that people are going out of their way to buy something else instead.
KentB27 If your family and friends make fun of you for the car you drive, I feel bad for you.
Prius drivers are always speeding. I average 75 mph , and everyday I see Prius drivers speed pass me at 80 or faster!!! Prius drivers are hypocrites !!!!
That makes you upto 93.75% hypocrite.
No, I’m not a Prius owner.
Just got the 2020 Corolla Hybrid. Comes with the Prius drive train, so finally a very nice looking body for the core of the Prius. We love it so far.
you wont get the same MPG. The prius is lighter and has a greater Drag coefficient.
Given he drives less than 30-40,000 miles a year, the difference won’t kill anyone. Still will be saving tons compared to today’s ecoturbos
My prius base model gets 56-75 mpg while I do rideshare services.
Honda will make a killing with this Insight.
The Prius is the most advanced cheese wedge I have ever seen
Loganscarinfo 07 It’s also the ugliest and moldiest cheese wedge, too.
@@97I30T Also the most reliable car and economic cheese wedge too. (Reason why ppl buy this cheese wedge)
And the cheese wedge has more tech vs the insight. Large screen, hud, self parking rear cross traffic braking
@@97I30T and the most reliable cheese wedge.
Yes!!!! Exactly what I wanted to see. Thank you for comparing!
J bio
I bet the Insight will sell like pancakes.
I think you mean hotcakes :-)
David Devan LOL I thought something was weird.
David Devan how about flapjacks
No, because it suffers from interior design, prius is fresher, plus that huge kockpit monitor that reminds of tesla cars...
Yeonhoo Kim 😂😂😂😂😂
Being a toyota/Lexus guy, I'd definitely consider the Insight. Not a big fan of the exterior of the Prius, but I'm also not a big fan of Honda/Acura interiors.
LEXUriouS Kirk this Prius looks like a stretched catfish.
Heyu Yoma a Japanese public bathroom I'm sure is really nice
LEXUriouS Kirk I'd check in to kia niro or Hyundai ioniq.
jae yong cho I'd only stick with Japanese hybrids. They've been proven reliable.
Actually the kia niro has the highest JD power customer quality rating.
I know this will sound weird, but after leasing a new car every two years, I feel the exterior look doesn't matter. What matters is comfort, efficiency, safety, ergonomics and passing power on the highway.
Can someone point an angle where Prius looks at least half decent?
Maybe direct top-down drone view?
jsponson It seems to have the same pancreas inspired bulge on the hood as Prius Prime, why the fuck did Toyota put it there?
jsponson Don't tell me it improves Aero efficiency over the wiper blades.
nvm, it probably does. IT'S A FUCKING TOYOTA AFTERALL!
No
Zoomed in so much that you can’t even tell it’s a prius
I've hated the Prius since they built the first one. They've been ugly from the beginning. This new Insight? I'd definitely drive it. It actually looks like a normal car. Very nice!! Honda is really stepping their game up. The new Accord is just plain sexy, the new Civic is really sharp, and this Insight is impressive.
Toyota better redesign this ugly thing asap. they will lose tons of customers to the insight.
I was thinking the same thing! Toyota needs to find another design team since their vehicles are sooooo ugly lately.
DAVID Y not all of them, just this poor thing.
I generally agree with you. I think the Camry and Corolla Hatchback are attractive in their own strange way. NX line is nice. Toyota can keep the designers for those cars and fire the rest.
Amen. Toyota better be scrambling with a new design. In comparison to the Insight, the Prius really is fugly!
The Camry xse v6 is pretty nice looking. But overall Toyota makes ugly cars in my opinion. But the new accord has ugly tail lights and the chrome grill is pretty ugly. I think both companies have questionable designs but I prefer Honda’s design.
Very disappointing that this hybrid got a better design than the current famous Civic. It has a luxurious sporty style. The current Civic design fits better for a hybrid especially from the rear side.
Energetic Fox Studios love the new civic if they removed the fake vents. Other than that I actually love the design.
The current gen accord is hideous and it still hasnt grow on me, never will
Vithursan B Yeah the Accord sorta weird because of how much the nose goes out. Wished they mad a coupe of it. Maybe it would have looked better.
It's also much more expensive.
The Civic is pretty hideous, but frankly I think the Insight is the future mainstream Civic.
Nobody likes how the Prius looks, people like the fuel efficiency of the Prius.
I really like the rear turn signal placement in the insight
That's what i was looking for. I was confused between these 2 Vehicles to pick, you cleared my confusion. i will go for Insight. Awesome comparison. Thanks
I love everything about the insight, it’s amazing I love my car 💕.
Prius looks like the time Homer designed his own car
Prius was like the ugliest girl you can find in the village, but she was the only girl.
Turf Surf Lmao
I want the Insight, but that auto parallel parking is super attractive on the Prius, and the Prius does get better mpg plus a hatchback. The main thing I hate about the Prius is that it’s...not subtle. It’s like kick-a-door-down-slam-your-hand-one-the-table performative environmentalism. Not the look I’m going for.
I always wondered why hybrids had to looks weird.....with the new insight, I believe automakers were fucking with us...there’s no reason why these vehicles can’t be designed like normal cars.
The prius gets more gas mileage than what Toyota says it gets. I get anywhere from 55-80mpg city/highway driving depending on how I drive. The other vehicles could never do what a prius does
Well you could buy a corolla, or Camry, they are super ordinary looking cars, and hybrid. Quite a bit of silly anti toyota nonesense on here.
no car on this planet can beat Prius's engine, i change oil every 12000 miles and its still amazing after 3 years of driving, bought at 58k miles, now at 156k miles, feels like it will go over 1 million miles, forever, soever my Love=Prius
did they fly you in the hondajet?
Have you heard about Honda clarity?
I live in San Diego with a 2013 Honda Accord EXL and the camera on the passenger mirror is phenomenal in heavy freeway 4-5 lane traffic!!! I'm glad to see it actually exist in new vehicles! I absolutely hate a dot light appearing on my mirror to tell me that a car is next to me. The camera mirror is so much better!!!💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I have a 2016 Prius and absolutely love it. Been driving it for 2 years. I often get 65-70mpg. Will go with the Prius over the Insight every time. I love the styling, the cargo space, the low drag, the backup camera, the joystick, the abundance of power, the spare tire and tire kit, all the small features that make such a huge difference, etc... Can't wait to take it on more adventures.
As always, great review, Sofyan! When the current generation prius first came out I wasn't a huge fan of the design choices Toyota made, but I applauded Toyota for their boldness. Now that the all-new Insight is out, the Prius looks somewhat awkward and less upscale (from the exterior mainly).
The average buyer in this class probably won't take styling too seriously though because the main reason they're shopping in the segment is for fuel efficiency. Therefore, the Prius edges out the Insight (comparing top-of-the-line models to top-of-the-line models) and the Prius offers a more spacious cargo area.
Overall, they are both pretty good vehicles, but I'll probably have to agree with you and pick the Honda mainly due to its lower starting price and the overall less offensive (and more mature) styling inside and out. As always, from one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work, Redline Reviews! 👍🏽
Styling: Prius = grotesque, Insight = mainstream & acceptable. The Insight is proof that 'enviro-dork' styling is not obligatory in a hybrid.
I think the Prius looks nice! I like the many corners and the unconventional shape, it's just more pleasing to look at! I personally don't like the generic look of the Insight. The Insight is very plain looking I cannot STAND the huge tablet and odd positioning of the shift lever in the Prius though. The screen is VERY obnoxious, I've driven the newer model and its very distracting. I personally am used to reaching next to me with my right hand to shift gears, but the lever is about a foot higher and sticks out perpendicular to the console which makes shifting very awkward, almost cumbersome. The chime is also fairly annoying after a few times. I've never driven the Insight, but I must say the screen looks nice. its big enough to see but not as obnoxious, and it's in an appealing looking position. Modern, but not intrusive. The thing I hate more than the Prius's wierd shift lever is the lack of one in the Insight. It's kind of off putting, and I can't always tell what I'm doing when pushing a button vs actually moving my arm. The seats on the Insight don't looks very nice from the back, they look like they'd squish your head forward, they look very uncomfortable even though they clearly aren't. as seen in the video.
Mechanically the Prius looks simpler and more inviting under the hood which is nice for someone like me who is newer to cars and is learning to change fluids and such. The Insight's hood looks a bit more intimidating to work on, just visually. It could be that it is wider or the engine doesn't look as "flat", but either way I just like the Prius's overall aesthetic more despite the large screen, annoying chime and shift lever. I personally like that there isn't any play in the brakes. You press it, and it works. Same with the steering. It does what you tell it. I dont really mind the view from the back, it looks very cool without getting in the way too much. I love how quiet and non-intrusive it is.
If I’m not mistaken, the Insight also has dual climate control where the Prius does not.
That Insight is an amazing car, beautiful, practical and relatively quick for a good price. The Prius is played out, it is so slow, almost dangerously so, I wouldn't be able to pull into traffic without causing road rage of the guy I cut off without trying to. Not to mention the interior is very sterile and plain and its fugly on the outside.
The Prius is super reliable. Hope the Insight is too
That is what my girlfriend in high school said. "just because your the first does not mean your the most successful."
But in this case it will be
That Prius front end has a 😣 face like it saw itself in the mirror lol
The insight looks a lot better then the Prius but cargo wise and reliability wise the Prius will win.
GiovanniLACA17XD RELIABILITY? REALLY? REMIND ME AGAIN WHO DID THE BIGGEST CUALITY RECALL IN THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY? OH YEAH. TOYOTA.
I don't know why so many people hate the styling of the Prius. I love it! Looks super sporty, feels HUGE on the inside (and everyone who gets in it says the same thing) and I love waking up to it every day. At the end of the day, nothing beats its mpg.
@@Areya-Sunshine
It just sucks
RELIABILITY??
@@Wurll Yes, you'll notice the Prius is on every Top 10 Most Reliable Cars List out there
Just a couple things. The"leather" in the Prius is not leather. They don't offer leather. It's faux non-animal based look alike that's designed to last longer. You can also get a sunroof. You can also fit 3 car seats in the back of a Prius. But not an insight. The prius is also rated 54hwy, 52 City. But the way the prius system runs you can also get those numbers quite a bit higher. Whereas you can't do that in the insight.
Insight is a totally US made car. They are assembled in Indiana and the engines and other components are made in Ohio. I like that....US jobs for US workers.
Its still a honda
It's good for US jobs, but $15 an hour jobs for Americans making Hondas is not very fair.
In Japan, Honda pays their auto workers at least 4 times more than it's US workers....fair?
Steve smith true but Camry Hybrid is made in the US
Yes it is. Camry is also an excellent car but does not have the ability to haul things like the Prius.
To those who say that it is still a Honda.....well Honda is really more American than it is Japanese.
I have driven Honda's.....many for over 500,000 miles. I now drive a 2018 Prius four. I don't care what the car looks like.....I like what it does....
it gets way more mileage than the Insight when driven correctly. How do I know? I drove both for over a month each. My one brother bought the Insight and my other brother bought the Prius 4. I found the technology on the Prius is more established than the first year Insight. I never buy a first
year car....ever. The Prius is now in its third year at the current design. It exceeds the MPG ratings more often than the Insight did. I found the Prius was more comfortable although the Insight interior I found to be of higher quality. They were both pretty quiet cars. They both are about the same as far as comfort goes. The Prius is known for being taxi's in NYC.....the reason why is they are so darned reliable. Proven technology.
What pushed me towards the Prius was the ability to haul things, it is not a first year car and the ability to achieve higher MPG's if you work at it.
The Insight, no matter how hard I tried, could not get above the posted MPG's on the sticker. The Prius, if driven with care, can get over 100 mpg's....
one trip I did, which I went down roads that were under 50 MPH, I got an amazing 103 MPG's over 27 miles.
The cost of living in Japan is so high.....a can of pop can be $10 US. Food is not cheap. The average pay for workers at Marysville Ohio is between $43K to $96K per year depending on what you do at the plant.
I have the previous gen Prius which looks less contentious. Great gas mileage 55-60 most drives.
Now I would pick the insight though. Much better looking. Good review. Thanks
I have a 2005 Prius. To be honest, over the years I've been pretty abusive to my Prius and she's always been so good to me! I've hit a few things, and even totaled her. She has never even so much as made a weird sound. I've owned a Chevy and a Ford in the past (Thinking about getting a Ford Focus? Don't.) but the Prius takes the cake. I also commute over 100 miles a day for work. Currently the display says I'm getting 56 MPG. My friends and I always make Prius jokes and laugh about its strange design, but honestly I love the jokes. My fiancé and his friends have much newer, nicer cars, but everyone wants to take the 20 year old tan Prius up to Maine for the 4th this year. Her name is Lil' Pri and she's ugly and she's covered in stickers and coffee stains and and she carries my bikes and all puts up with all my shit. 10/10 would recommend.
The Prius looks pretty weird while the Insight is very stylish, however I’m buying the Prius because it’s the best Hybrid hatchback offered. The Insight lost me as soon as I saw the small trunk. I use my current Prius as a two seater with tons of room behind - can’t do that with the Insight.
the insight is gonna sell really well. amazing job by Honda. I even think it looks better than the new accord
Dhruv Kota it won't sell be cause Camry hybrid is better
@Josh Khup I saw like 2 lmao
@Josh Khup Priuses have just been really common for so many years. I think they are ugly af. I wish the insight was more popular
@Josh Khup yea, I do have to give it that. It is unique for sure
I owned a Prius, wanted another, but the financing rates are nuts up here in Canada. Over 6%, to me that is why they don't sell. Ioniq is near 0%.
People who drive hybrids, WANT it to look different. And no, Prius sales have not been hurt by its looks but because of fuel prices. We'll see if people want "normal" looking hybrids/electrics, but I doubt it. That's why Prius and Tesla are so popular in their respective segments.
Not everyone though. I for one prefer a Camery Hybrid, Ford Fusion or Insight over a Pruis. For the mpgs ya know?
“They have kind of 16” wheels instead of kind of 15” wheels”. You bash the design of the Prius, then you say that taste is subjective, then you go back to bashing the design. You tend to waste more time on cosmetics, when you could have used to cover the technology. I think my favorite part was the tour of the cockpit. You pointed out how weird the Prius gauge cluster. The same gauge cluster that Toyota has used on the Prius since the second generation. I agree, the Prius is quirky. My issue is with how your reviews are so focused on your opinions, instead of empirical data.
I love both the Insight and the Prius. Once I save up and build my credit on those cars, I’ll stick with the Insight instead.
Honda made a nice car but it seems to me that the biggest competitor might be the Civic.
Beast man pumping out the vids!
When he was in the insight and said he’s going to put the insight into sport mode he actually took it out of sport mode. You can tell by the red lights in the instrument cluster when the car is in sport and green when in normal.
I think the Insight has a better looking than the Prius, inside and outside, I would buy the Insight. Great comparison of these hybrids. You get great millage with both cars too
that honda look good omg better then all the other cars they have stay very ture as a honda looking. i love it
It's so dumb for the Prius to not utilize the area in front of the steering wheel to display useful information. You're just looking at plastic dash material. What a waste. The Insight digital display is quite good. Audi has the best solution in which Navigation information can be displayed in the display in front of the steering wheel.
I have mixed feelings about this. I lower my tilt steering all the way down in my car because I find it more comfortable, but now the steering wheel obscures a large part of the speedometer and I can't tell how fast I'm going once I exceed 30 mph! A few cars have instrument clusters that move with the steering wheel tilt, but the ones I've seen have been pretty ugly. I would love to be able to display driving info on the center display, at least optionally.
Maybe I could get used to looking at the center display on the dash all the time. I guess we are all creatures of habit to some degree. It just seems like a wasted space to have that area in front of the steering wheel to be blank.
Every Prius model since 1997 has had the display more towards the middle, although I think this latest generation the speedometer readout is a little bit farther to the right then in previous models. I have a 2008 myself and the speedometer readout is almost directly in front of you at the very bottom of the windshield. Actually like it a lot more than the next two generations of Priuses. If I was buying a brand new hybrid I would probably look at a Hyundai ioniq, or the Kia Niro,.I don't really like sedans so for me the new Honda Insight is kind of a fail in that regard.
iakona23 so your hands don't block your vision
The Honda Insight is like a luxury car it’s really nice way way better than the Prius
As far as styling goes, I like the Prius's unique different looks. To me Honda insight's styling is normal sedan styling and little boring.
You should review the Honda clarity
Thank u for this review. Now my mom can get A new insight! Excellent review as always!! ❤❤❤❤
the odd sound might likely come from the engine matching the power requirements of the electric motor which is not in phase with the car speed
for Pruis 43 Liters tank in city it can go for 614.3 miles or 990 km in dstance
for honda insight it is only 40 liters tank. so it can go in city upto 540 miles in distance or 870 km
if honda has same tank capacity then it will return in city over 580 miles or 934 km in distance and the difference will be 33 miles or 58 km
so the benefit for honda you can fill it up lower by almost a gallon or 3 liters and there is no big difference in miles only 33 miles is nothing compared to high great looking car compared to the super ugly pruis>>>>>>>>. what do you think guys >
The insight will break down after 100k miles
The Prius looks like it was designed by Homer Simpson.
this needs a NEW COmparison with the Corolla Hybrid
Camry hybrid it’s in the 50´s mpg, pushes 208hp, and looks good too. Better than the insight :)
It doesn’t compete with Insight. It competes with Accord Hybrid which out-performs the Camry Hybrid :)
Lol he realy wanted to say the Prius is ugly. You can Sofyan.
He's trying his best not to call the Prius ugly.
Very useful comparison. I hope you'll get a chance to try the Ioniq hybrid to compare it to the Prius and Insight. These are three cars that I think will compete for many customers.
*WE GET IT!!!* You don't like the Prius....
They should bring the Fit 3 Hybrid, single motor electric and dual-clutch 7-speed. Gives better MPG than Prius C, decently quick (0-60 in 7.8s), big inside and fun to drive.
Thanks for the comparison, great review.
The Prius first went on sale in Japan and other countries in 1997, and was available at all four Toyota Japan dealerships, making it the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. It was subsequently introduced worldwide in 2000
Driving the Prius would make me feel like a gender fluid space cadet.
ok we get it you are old
I swear it's as if people forgot Toyota offers a hybrid model of EVERY VEHICLE THEY HAVE
We need to get you up to a million subs in the next 12months..
The Prius front end looks like it just had a head on collision lol
If they never put the rear turn signals outside,Audi was gonna say that Honda copies their design from A3 sedan
Why do you drag race with the windows opened? You increase your aerodynamic drag.
Thank you for doing this!
The prius look like after someone hit the front end by a baseball bat
Toyota hybrids have really good reliability, it’s easier to change hybrid battery, and lower depreciation
That's why I'm looking at it. Long-term ability to keep it going.
The Prius is a face not even a mother would love
Insight all the way, it's so much better than the awful prius.
The Toyota Camry and Corolla is available as hybrids with over 50 mpg if they wanted to compare a traditional sedan instead of a hatchback.
Is this video even necessary? We all know the insight won. Lol
D Es it's just to bash the Prius...we all know Camry hybrid wins
The Toyota Prius has a face that only a mother can love because it is also known to be an efficient hybrid that hot-rodders love to hate
Who is the crazy designer of prius
yousuf aijaz Chris Bangle
Marco Morel The looks of the Prime are actually tolerable. I don’t know why they didn’t make every Prius look like that.
Brian Griffin
The one who smells crack.
jorge guzman it’s a Japanese car dumbass
i am smelling a redesign for the prius in the very near future.
The Prius's front looks like an ugly disfigured fish
𝕀t looks beautiful and is better than afford maybe you can't afford it that's why you are against it.
Honda needed to put that dash in the accord. What’s up with the paddle shifters?
Toyota designers be like: Hold my beer.
*In Japanese*
Syed Shah
Stfu with that hold my beer shit!
I have 2011 insight with 215k as of today. It still drives really nice without problems.
I wonder what Toyota designers and executives drink while approving such an ugly meaningless design!!!
Glad you made the comparison. Toyota is still the most practical which for me is the main factor.
I love the styling of the Prius.
ygg drasil ugly as fuck, you got bad at taste
The Insight's mechanical connection between engine and wheels is usually disengaged. Except at high speeds/low loads (freeway cruising on a level road) there is no mechanical connection. The engine only spins a generator. In a drag race situation you're being propelled by electric motors only. Both engine and batteries are dumping maximum current into the motors.
Good to see honda has back to the path where it supposed to be
That's a Honda Jet
(I mean the plane at the beginning-not the car!)
Honda tried to do the BMW Hofmeister kink on the Accord and it's a total failure. That's partly why it's so ugly. This insight is beautiful compared to the Accords exterior porpotions
PLATINUM I thought the Accord was ugly too until I saw one in person. They look a lot better in real life.
THIS DESIGN WAS TAKEN FROM THE ACCORD, AND HONDA JUST CHANGED A COUPLE THINGS!!!
PLATINUM the Accord is gorgeous man!
Duck Fayce so true. without the new Accord, there would haven't been THIS new Insight.

Thanks for the excellent review! I think only people who want a lift-back should choose the Prius. Actually they should consider the Ioniq. Only people who like literal "cutting edge" styling should pick the Prius. The Insight is a great choice for the rest of the shoppers. I hope Honda wins this sales battle against Toyota; they deserve to.
Guess i will have to be the lone person still on the prius side.....sure its ugly, but the prius has a long history of good reliability and great gas mileage....you cant say that with the insight....new or old model. I think quite a few people are repeat buyers and wont take chance. On the new insight. And lets not forget the prius comes in three different configurations subcompact, sedan , and wagon. You dont have that with the insight. I think the prius will remain on top in sells
Soften, I have a family of 6, live an outdoor lifestyle, tow a camper, and prefer 4x4. What would be the best bang for my buck? Suburban, Sequoia, or front bench seat Tundra?
