Unlike 1000's of other youtube videos, yours give clear and concise instructions for the projects. No shaky camera action, no clutter in the field of view, no irrelevant commentary. Best of all for me, your hands show that you really are a true craftsperson - no fancy nails!
Thank you for repeating how to stitch behind the stitch seven times. I really needed to hear it several times since I’m a slow learner. The close ups did wonders too!
Here’s a few additional tips: - Use gridded paper to practice binding if you’re not ready to commit to your actual pages yet. - If you don’t have beeswax you can run your thread through a tea light candle which will have a similar result. - My grandmother taught me that in sewing you always tie three knots at the end of your thread to make sure it doesn’t slip through.
5 years later, I never expected this to be one of my most viewed videos! I've since received feedback (mostly from professional bookbinders) that calling this a 'kettle stitch' is incorrect, so I'm here to clarify (see description). I am self-taught and a hobby bookbinder (not a professional). When I first started bookbinding, I made my own adaptation and didn't know this was 'incorrect'. To get technical-what you see here is more like a half-kettle or a link stitch. That said, I still find this method works well for my book projects. If you prefer the traditional kettle stitch, here's a great tutorial: ruclips.net/video/5DZFTZDwT50/видео.html
I don't care what it's called lol, the pros can call it the hiccup stitch for all I care. It works and you made it simpler. That's what i care about. I'm a slow learner at things like this, and i have to watch videos 100 times. This one not so much cause it's easy. And if you have adapted it and put your own on it, then you can call it whatever you want. You do great work keep it up.
@Sea Lemon can you do the same with single pages? Like I'm trying a dark academia theme journal but I unfortunately tore out single pages,so does this also apply the same process?
Thank you Jennifer for these excellent instructions. Waxing helped as my thread was tangling badly. It’s a stitch I can do, so appreciate your amending the kettle stitch!
For my fellow europeans: good measurements are 1,5cm at the beginning and then 6 times 3cm until u end up with almost exactly 1,5cm again at the end. (A5) I hope that was understandable, Im not good at explaining ^^°
Man this makes me want to make more books. It's been too long and I recently dug out a huge piece of book board that I didn't know I had. I think it's a sign!
I'm making my third notebook to send to my friend and I wanted to say thanks for this clear tutorial, I managed to get it right the first time and if it weren't for such clear instructions, i don't think i would have managed without ending up frustrated.
Tried this and it turned out quite good. But I also made quite a few mistakes. Here are those: 1) Use a paper clip to keep in place the different signatures in place or they will move. 2) Please watch the whole video before starting. Being the rushy girl I am, I just watched the beginning and thought I could do the rest myself. As a result, while looping the new signatures, I kept looping them through the thread of the first signature rather than the stich below it, which resulted in a not so good looking book. So, watch it the whole way through and then begin😂 Edit: also don't pull too hard on the thread, it'll rip through your signature 🤦😂
for anyone who may read this, if you pull more to the side(along the spine) than out(away from the spine) you can put more tension on the string without ripping paper
Tried this today and I can't thank you enough for this wonderful tutorial. My journal looks just how I'd pictured it. I'm just so happy. No more buying journals. Plus I discovered that binding is just the most therapeutic activity I've ever come across!! Thank you so much! ❤️❤️
Hi Jennifer, thank you very much for teaching us how to sew a book. I've made 5 notebooks since 2017 using the method you taught in this video. It's super easy and works very well. ❤ Love from Brazil 🇧🇷
This was actually incredible...I'm binding my wife a journal for Christmas right now & was pretty sure it wouldn't work...but it's working. Thank you for all the close-up shots. Life-saver.
Thank you. Im binding my first book and this is very clear and straightforward. I think I may have been a tad ambitious for my first attempt though. Im making a leather bound travelers journal with blank pages. Most I see have lined paper, bound in brown leather, but I draw a lot, so I wanted blank pages. Plus, I prefer black leather and I had some at home from other projects, so.....yup. I decided to make my own. I'm finding it rather fun though, so I might make more.....thanks for the tutorial!!
It is refreshing for me in Bookbinding. I was in the family of Printing & Publsihing firm all my my teen/adult life and very familiar in all sorts of Bookbinding manual or by machine. However when the firm closed for the past 20 years I have never done and in fact lost touch in "classic"bookbinding . Now I am very much in Sketching and Arts, Crochet etc and found your tutorials in Book binding are helpful and inspiring. Thanks.
I tried bookbinding yesterday for the first time ever, following this tutorial. I've left the glue on the spine to dry overnight and when I woke up, I just couldn't believe I have done something like that. It turned out AMAZING and I'm sooo happy. Thank you for this super helpful tutorial!
Thank you so much for posting this excellent tutorial. I just finished binding my first journal, and to my utter shock and surprise, it worked -- mine's not as neat as yours -- and everything you did and suggested was relevant. I did not use a contrasting thread, and it made it a little difficult to see the previous signature, because I had different colors for the covers -- next time I'll know better, but i'm very appreciative of you posting this. Cheers -- Patricia
I saw another channel use a curved quilting needle to sew behind the seams (with the same method). Just thought I would share it, since it looks like it would save a lot of time.
Your video was really very helpful and I am sure it was helpful to others as well. Everything was so well explained that there was no confusion. Just because of your video was was able to gift my friend a binded book and I did that on my first try. I am on the way to bind another book and without you it wouldn't have been possible. Thank you so so so so much. (And a little more thank you) Loads of love ❤❤❤
First time I'm trying to make a book by myself and I have to say I really enjoy it so far. Your videos are really helpful and make the process easier. I loved the stitching part! Now I have to make a cover and my first handmade book ever will be done. Thank you so much!!!
Jennifer I tried this a few days ago, and it turned out just awesome!)) Thank you!! And yes, after a few signatures it can be a little dificult to work with a straight needle, and it's much easier to work with a curved one)) (which I didn't have at that moment so I had to curve mine a bit whith some pliers, and it worked just fine))❤
Can't wait to try this out! I'm going to try bookbinding for an art project for school and hope I will get the hang of it so I can at some point just make a spellbook prop to use during D&D.
thank you, I have watched this video a few years ago when making writing journals, but I was recently inspired to write an actual book. I will be using this method, thank you for concise clear instructions, and i don't really care what anyone wants to call it, I like your stitching.
The QUARANTINE word on You Tube is getting really tiresome, I'd like it to be quoted in a Quentin Tarantino film & machine gunned out common usage. You use the 'Q' word but its not as if your incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay along with 40,000 others & at risk of COVID &/or HIV. It just constructive criticism, its nothing personal.
Despite taking two bookbinding courses in college, THIS video is what finally got me to understand how to sew a text block. My most sincere thanks to you!
Love it. I've love an uncut version of you binding at least the first three signatures. *Seeing* what you're doing would be a lot better than hearing you explain what I missed due to jump cuts. The end result was very pretty!
I made my first hard-bound book using this stitch. It's 480 pages. I spray painted the edges gold from your other video. My very first project and it came out fantastic! Thank you for your vids. I'm starting on a second book now and plan on making this one with a rounded spine.
Wanted to buy a nice sketchbook with good watercolour paper but they were all so expensive!! I just got some A4 watercolour paper and used your instructions. now i have a cute little watercolour sketchbook. It was SO much easier and quicker than i thought. Can see me making lots more!! Would use thicker thread next time. I wasn't going to cover it but i might even have a go at that! Thanks
I loved watching this style! Several years ago I made 5 books for a friend. They were copies of a portion of her great Aunts diary. She gave them as Christmas gifts to family members. I loved learning the process with a book press I made from two blocks of wood with bolts and wing nuts.
Thanks for watching my tutorial on kettle stitch binding! For those who are asking, the paper I'm using is 8.5x11" 70 lb. text in warm white made by International Paper (Accent Opaque Digital line). See description for more info & here's a video all about the paper I use for bookbinding - bit.ly/SeaPaper
For what reason in the world would anyone give a video like this a thumbs down? Bad day? Negative person??? It is a super easy to follow tutorial. A super likeable woman who wants to sbare her knowledge with total strangers in a really exceptional friendly way. Thanks so very much for this tutorial. I learned so much already. You found a new follower in me. I so love the calm way you instruct us. Some people are so overwhelming, they talk non stop without saying anything interesting and telling us their whole life. Thanks so. Much for this wonderfull video. ❤️ From Namibia
I want to thank you so much for this tutorial!!! I made a first-time (in hindsight, half-assed) attempt to make memory books for my nieces and nephews last Christmas. It was all kinds of wrong. Over the past two days, I took two mixed media books, cut them down, utilized this stitching (which I love btw so they open flat) to make sketchbooks for this year's Christmas presents. The next step, a book press. I found a pack of two cutting boards on Amazon for less than $10. Thanks again, I have learned so much from your videos. {{{hugs}}}
Thank you thank you thank you, I am up against a deadline for a conference and needed to get my picture book dummy assembled - this is by far the clearest, easiest to see tutorial on book stitching that I've found.
This was my first time trying to bind a book, i made a few little mistakes but it still worked out. This was very clear on how to do everything, no confusion whatsoever. I was just practicing with a small amount but enough to do all the steps, and now im going to do it, learning from my mistakes with coffee-stained paper i made myself and add a cover to it. Im so exited to see if it works.
i've rewatched this soo many times but i still don't understand. I'm bored during quarantine here in england so I really want to make Tom Riddle's diary.
You are good at what you do and teaching, BUT Unlike so many on RUclips your a very good video producer. No distracting looping music, good editing, good audio, good camera angles You are a Professional and it was a pleasure to learn from you. Thanks very much -j
Best explanation ever! The guide is so clear that a person like me (with zero experience) managed to easily bind my sketchbook! Thanks so much! Saved the link for sharing and future reference.
Dear Jennifer, first I want to say that I love your DIY tutorials about bookbinding. I want to know if there is a tutorial where you stitch single sheets before gluing it. Thanks!
I had never made a book in my life. With just watching 2 of your videos I was able to create a screen ready replica of the Grail Diary from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Thank you so much for this video! So easy to follow!
I'm so deeply in love with your work in this channel since the first video I saw... I feel so grateful for have access to those amazing tutorials and informations, all so simple and professional. Also, the way you show things and talk is so calm and easy to listen to, It's almost like you are a friend of mine (I feel something like) xD So, again, thank you so much for this channel and all the inspiration and knowledge you poportionate to me :)
Thanks. I have been trying to understand the kettle stich and you gave me the easiest method. Before your video I examined three of my books but your explanation is by far the clearest.
I’m actually writing my own book and I can’t wait to be able to bind it!!! I also have a question. How do you transfer the words on smaller paper? Instead of the big printer paper while still being able to type it all out? 🤔
I think you can edit the text placement or size on whatever writing program you’re working on! I’d recommend looking into that because I’m not sure what program you’re working on!
Love your tutorials as always. If you're keeping a wish list of other binding methods, I'd love to see your take on Secret Belgian Binding. Not many online tutorials out there for that one. It seems sort of coptic stitch-like, in nature, however.
Thank you soo much. This video was very helpful. My friend asked me to help her bind a book she wanted for a prop and I didn't know how to do it. Now I do and have a skill I can add to my cosplay skills. Thanks again
I have a question regarding the signatures. Having four pages together to make a signature, the center two pages stick out a bit past the first two pages in the stack on the long open edge. Do you trim your edges to make them even, or leave the pages as they are? What does anyone else do about the uneven edges on the pages in their signatures? Thanks!
+Pamela Goodman You can trim the uneven edge after the text block has been stitched and glued. I usually show that step in bookmaking tutorials because this video is just to focus on getting the binding method down. Here's an old video on making a smooth edge, this might help - bit.ly/XfjxYr
+Pamela Goodman You can also trim each signature to have an even edge and then bind all the signatures together. The final edge might not be perfectly smooth but you won't have the middle pages sticking out :)
I love your made up stitch! I'm on my third book using it, I was shocked and impressed when I seen that you basically made up this stitch using a combination of various ones!
This helped a lot! I am 10 by the way i really love reading especially fairytales :) i also love arts and crafts you inspire me with this :) thank you so much I appreciate it ☺️💕
Sea Lemon, i watched you when i was 8-9 years old, i love your content to this day. Im also planning to write and bind a book and this video looks great. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for such a simple video - I thought my new hobby was going to die a depressing death because I couldn't figure out the stitch but your video has been incredible! Thank you!
To reduce tangling thread, thread your needle before you cut your thread. Or at least make sure your thread is threaded in that direction. That way, it lays flat and you are not pulling against the stapling of the fibers.
The first one worked for me :) It's nice that you take the time to upgrade it, tho. What's the difference between kettle stitch and coptic stitch? I thought they were the same.
In my experience it depends on how long the distance between the holes are, and how thick the paper is (thicker paper = fewer papers per signature). If it helps ahah
I agree about that… Furthermore, I would say that this method is probably not the best to use with watercolor paper if you intend to use it for watercoloring : the water will probably be sneaky enough to go right on the stitching and weaken the binding holes, leading the pages to completely rip off the book… For watercolor, i would recommend the japanese binding in which the holes are further away from the edges of the paper and not located in a fold (which also contribute to the weakening and ripping of the pages mentioned before)
Thank you! I really enjoyed this tutorial. It was very clear and instructional. I've been working on binding my own journal using an old cover from the late 1800's, and this is just what I needed to get over the hurdle of binding the pages.
I'm just getting into book binding and found your video. I did my first text block last night using your method. It came out pretty good for my first try! Its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Thank you so much for your video!! I'm putting the case on today using your case tutorial! Wish me luck!!
Thank you! This has been very informative. I'm going to be professionally publishing my book series soon, but I have my own version of the book series that I plan on hand binding. Your videos are easy to follow. I've subscribed a few and favorited them so I can go back and follow along when I start hand binding the books.
Thank you! Very clear indeed, and now I'm binding a collection of 90 poems I've learned by heart. Never too late, I'm 77.
Awww. This comment makes me soft.

Here’s a few additional tips:
- Use gridded paper to practice binding if you’re not ready to commit to your actual pages yet.

I'm just starting this hobby and your grandmother has saved me a TON of headache!
You saved me today with that candle back lol thank you very much. ❤

For some reason after watching this video it's inspired me to write my own book, now I am at four chapters and 6,591 words

I'm just wondering, how many sheets of paper did you use for one signature? Thx
Ps. I absolutely love your vids
It's 4 pieces of paper per signature, so 8 pages. :)
@@annaviehhauser8594 It's 4 A4 pieces of paper, so there's 8 A4 pages, but book is more like A5, so it'll be 16 pages
@Amit Patel hello amit patel from india 👋
Thanks for watching my tutorial on kettle stitch binding! For those who are asking, the paper I'm using is 8.5x11" 70 lb. text in warm white made by International Paper (Accent Opaque Digital line). See description for more info & here's a video all about the paper I use for bookbinding -

Sea Lemon you are making the books very easily
You have amazing DIY projects.
Sea Lemon if using sewing machine to thread each bundle instead of hand sewing. Will the result be the same?
Sea Lemon this was very helpful! I made a book and I think it looks okay!
Spacial Art
I'm gonna take Fundamentals of Typography this fall and one of the projects is to bind your own book and I feel this will help me big time.
SO helpful @SeaLemonDIY I have just refreshed my memory after not doing any bookbinding for a couple of years. Thank you!!
this was a tutorial my 10 year old could follow! so it's perfect for me :) GREAT JOB! I'm subbing!
Thanks for subbing!
Sea Lemon hi love your videos and am I am making a book but I am typing the stories from the internet and I need some guidelines
Sea Lemon what kind of paper are you using? I want to this to my artsy friend 😊
For those wondering, each signature has 7 holes
Love you 😢❤
Yay now I don’t have to keep looking everywhere for the perfect journals when I can just make my own!!!
I want to thank you so much for this tutorial!!! I made a first-time (in hindsight, half-assed) attempt to make memory books for my nieces and nephews last Christmas. It was all kinds of wrong. Over the past two days, I took two mixed media books, cut them down, utilized this stitching (which I love btw so they open flat) to make sketchbooks for this year's Christmas presents. The next step, a book press. I found a pack of two cutting boards on Amazon for less than $10. Thanks again, I have learned so much from your videos. {{{hugs}}}
Thank you thank you thank you, I am up against a deadline for a conference and needed to get my picture book dummy assembled - this is by far the clearest, easiest to see tutorial on book stitching that I've found.
This was so fun! I really enjoyed sewing my text block along with you!
Thank you so much for this first plane of the stitching.
I have perfectly clear how it's done.
I'm totally doing this
This is really helpful!! I’ve been looking into bookbinding for awhile and I’ve finally decided to try it out :>
Thanks! It has been a year and bookbinding has been my favourite hobby because of your video.
The tutorial starts at 1:45. You're welcome.
After two hours I finally made it!
You are good at what you do and teaching, BUT
Unlike so many on RUclips your a very good video producer.
No distracting looping music, good editing, good audio, good camera angles
You are a Professional and it was a pleasure to learn from you. Thanks very much -j
Best explanation ever! The guide is so clear that a person like me (with zero experience) managed to easily bind my sketchbook! Thanks so much! Saved the link for sharing and future reference.
Thank you for this video! I made my first succsesful diy planner thanks to you! I'm back this year, making the one for the school year to follow! ❤
Dear Jennifer, first I want to say that I love your DIY tutorials about bookbinding. I want to know if there is a tutorial where you stitch single sheets before gluing it. Thanks!
+Cristiano Romualdo yes! Here's a single sheet binding tutorial - bit.ly/SingleSheet
Thanks!
I was so confused in the first video but this one makes much more sense, thank you so much for the updated version!!
2 years of making books for my journaling and morning pages with this way ,and this is my favourite method ever ! Thank you so so much .
Also, the way you show things and talk is so calm and easy to listen to, It's almost like you are a friend of mine (I feel something like) xD
So, again, thank you so much for this channel and all the inspiration and knowledge you poportionate to me :)

Larisa Kachko i hate you ok

Thanks. I have been trying to understand the kettle stich and you gave me the easiest method. Before your video I examined three of my books but your explanation is by far the clearest.
Thank you! That’s the clearest demonstration for kettle stitch I have found yet!
I’d recommend looking into that because I’m not sure what program you’re working on!
does anyone know where i can find the second tutorial of how to make the complete book? thanks
Love your tutorials as always. If you're keeping a wish list of other binding methods, I'd love to see your take on Secret Belgian Binding. Not many online tutorials out there for that one. It seems sort of coptic stitch-like, in nature, however.
This is exactly what I've been looking for, thank you!
+Sea Lemon DIY Thank you so much! I am a quilter, so an uneven edge on anything drives me crazy, LOL.
+Pamela Goodman You can also trim each signature to have an even edge and then bind all the signatures together. The final edge might not be perfectly smooth but you won't have the middle pages sticking out :)
+Sea Lemon DIY That's a great idea! I'll go with that..trimming each signature before putting them together. Thanks! :D
I personally leave them rough because I like the look, but you could probably trim them afterwards.
This tutorial is amazing thank you so much for making it !!!
Just a personal preference, but waxing the thread is absolutely a must in my book. (Heh. Get it? :D)
Luca Morgenstern that was beautiful, I choked on my water!!😂😂
Luca OOHH!!
Ooo you made my sides ache =P
Can someone explain lmao
I have bound a 300 pages book with this and it's wonderful cause I can write in every mm of the page...this is the best binding technique...thank you
You're giving my ideas of gifts for my friends and family. Love it. I haven't made handmade books in about 15 plus years. Thank you for this.
What if the signatures are already sewed each alone, can I still attach them all together?
I don't know what the oldest known example of bookbinding is, but it would be super cool to see you recreate that! This was SO helpful so thank you!
I love this tutorial it so clear and simple, hopefully I don’t run into any problems but hey, you earned a sub 😉
I love your made up stitch! I'm on my third book using it, I was shocked and impressed when I seen that you basically made up this stitch using a combination of various ones!
This helped a lot! I am 10 by the way i really love reading especially fairytales :) i also love arts and crafts you inspire me with this :) thank you so much I appreciate it ☺️💕
how many pages r in each signature?
One full sheet of paper
Four pieces of paper that was folded in half
Is this kind of binding the same as Smyth Sewing? I'm looking forward to trying this.
It's too late to answer you might know the answer already but this binding doesn't require the cover to be sewn with signatures
Will this stitching with stand heavier paper like watercolor paper/mix media paper? Can it hold copy paper without ripping?
