I love how you don't just explain the 'how' but also the 'why' of the steps you take in the crafting process. Your attention to detail is much appreciated.
I have one of Chanel’s books, and I can tell you that it is exquisitely made. There is such attention to detail that you will never be disappointed. I’m looking forward to getting a couple more of her books in the future.
You’re living my dream! If I had one of her books I’d be TERRIFIED to write in it because I’m sure if I messed up I’d hate myself forever. However I’d LOVE to have a bullet journal she made. I’d cry tears of joy and just spend hours opening and closing it and feeling the covers (this sounds creepy but I just love journals)
That hinge gap demonstration is precisely what I needed to see to get the feel of their widths - thank you very much for your effort in creating the video. I'm looking forward to doing more case bindings, and your video will help my confidence with it. Cheers!
Thanks. I am learning a lot as I teach a 14 year old how to make a book. We are learning together! We made our first one without learning anything. It stayed together is all I can say. Our next one is going to be GREAT!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Your voice is so soothing, and the instructions concise and easy to follow. I've been following you for a while and always learn something new from your videos. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge with us 🥰
i found your channel through your first case binding tutorial. it's so wonderful to see how your technique has improved and how much knowledge you've gained since then. i like to think i've been improving along with you but i'm yet to make a book as clean and crisp as this lol. thank you for this, it's always great to get another video from you
just finished my first attempt, aside from putting title on the cover. really helped to have this to follow step-by-step. First one might not be the prettiest thing but having finished it makes itthe best to me
During my binding projects I often come back to this video and everytime I come to the end of the video you say "You´re amazing, you did it." And that´s so extremely lovely and realistic...I´m so happy to hear that. I think you don´t know how important it was for me to hear that, so thank you ♥ your videos are amazing and so are you!
I honestly think this is your best tutorial yet. There isnt a single step here that i thought needed more explanation or clarification. I'm already through the signature step, and so excited to make my hard cover using your papers!
I just made my first case-bound book & have been devouring your videos! I'm a poet - who happens to not have much money - & this makes getting my work bound accessible! Thank you so much!
this is the best and most valuable video I have seen since a long time. Thank you for taking the time to properly mark chapters and for all of the beatiful shots. Instant follow!
I started with case binding (I've made three so far) and I found this video very useful along with your book. I've decided to work my way through your book 😊
I have been struggling with case binding for SO long but the measurement tips in this video helped everything come together for me. Enormous gratitude for your generosity in sharing your teaching and binding skills with us.
I've been listening to this video while I've been working. Your voice is really calming. I'm definitely giving this a go. Thank you for taking the time to make and share this video
As always, such a delightful tutorial. And the best part is actually when you do make a small mistake and then show us how we too can fix it. It shows you are human and makes us feel that it can happen to anybody. Loved this tutorial! I have made my first hard cover journal via books and other RUclips videos but this one was the best. I look forward to making my next one using your helpful tips❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for your channel and amazing videos! I am mom of a 7 month baby, and I am writing a diary for him since I was preagnet. Next step is to make my own diary 😊 Thank you so much for the inspiration and the amazing tutorial!! The best on youtube! 🤩 a Big hug from Porto-Portugal
Such a great video! I really appreciate seeing the mistake on the casing in, it is totally the hardest part of making a cased book for me. This really helped show some tips to look out for that I'll definitely reference again come casing in time! P.S. I also have your book right on my table to reference whenever I need, you've created such wonderful resources for us, thank you Chanel! :)
I followed your tutorial and made my first book! It’s not perfect by any means but I’m very happy with it and have already started my next hoping to improve on some of my first problems. Thank you so much for the great videos.
I’m a photographer hoping to self-publish and hand-make books someday, your channel has just become an incredible resource for me. I appreciate the detail and explanation so much!!
Thank you so much for making this tutorial! I decided I wanted to start bookbinding as a hobby, and this tutorial was so easy to follow! My first book turned out great!
Very nice, I tried your instructions and recreated a new cover for my old book and gave a great look for the first time and thanks to your instructions as well, but the hangman is external unfortunately I chose a bad quality but it was great nonetheless, thank you ❤
This is inspiring. Thanks for a great video with excellent, detailed instructions. My only suggestion (when demonstrating the sewing technique) is to use a thread in a bright colour so that it's easy to see the stitch patterns against the white paper. Can't wait to give it a go :)
Awesome, I'm having a keen interest in book binding and photo book making lately. This tutorial video was surely a great resource for me, and you are very likable by the way. Thank you so much. Would you consider doing a complete photo book tutorial in the future please?
Thank you for this tutorial. I was struggling with the attachment of the block and the front and back pages coming out smoothly. I was able to execute an almost flawless book❤
This video is marvellous. I love how you share every single item you use, and the gsm of paper. Your bookbinding skill is amazing. I am going to have fun trying the french sewing method. I totally love it. Thank you so much for your superb tutorial. Blessings 💜 x
OMGosh, I really appreciate this so much!! I bought your book a few months ago which I have looked though but haven’t actually read yet. I have not been able to go in my making studio for months. I don’t feel like there is a lot of booking making/binding tutorials out there but I have watch most of the ones I’ve been able to find. I can honestly say, this is my favorite one! As it is the most clear and thorough explanation for me! I just want to go back a book right now! First I have to go to work. 😅 ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I especially appreciate the spacing information between spine and book boards as that is what has caused me the most issues especially with leather book “cloth”. This is so helpful!!!
Great job explaining everything in detail. I was especially impressed that you explained the proper names for each part of the book as you built it, so we can learn the correct terminology! You're a really good teacher and I love watching you do your craft. 👏👏👏😄😄🤩
Excellent tutorial! Am a beginner, only having made 5 book so far over several months. Needed a refresher to make a hardcover case & learned a lot more from your video as well. Great instructions and easy to follow.
Awesome video tutorial! very clear and concise. I will use your video when I finish writing my book. Publishing through a professional place is so expensive - unless you know them. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this. I have your book. The video is very helpful and makes the instructions complete and easy to follow. Your quiet voice and lovely demeneor is enjoyable. ❤
This tutorial is perfect. Thank you so much! I've watched a lot of casebinding tutorials before so I'm familiar with the process but my main issue was figuring out how to get things to lay flat. Now I know in my past projects I didn't have enough of a gap around the spine. I am excited to give this another try!
Even after a few years of taking up bookbinding as a hobby, which I love, I still can't get casebinding quite right. I always can't get the endpapers exactly straight onto the covers and it vexes me so bad because it's an imperfection that I must perfect!!!
Thank you Really, This is my first book I made it .The instructions are very clear. I am very proud of this book,Am I the only one who was so messy when I finished?😅
Excellent tutorial! Thanks for leaving in your mistake. So helpful to learn how to correct errors. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience so your viewers can learn from them. From Cheryl in AZ.
When casing in the book, always bring the cover over the glued endpaper rather than trying to position the glued endpaper to the board. Much more accurate and the fore edge of the paste down can always be trimmed afterwards.
Saludos desde Costa Rica 🇨🇷, hace unos días te encontré y estoy encantada con tu trabajo. También hago encuadernación 📚 espero algún día que mis libretas lleguen a verse como las suyas ❤
An excellent tutorial - thank you. Please make extra commentary that when trimming paper edges; or anything for that matter, use a 'safety' rule which I noticed you were using. This is imperative. Should the knife slip using a rule without a guard, it will cut the top of your thumb clean off. It happened to me - one slip and the thumb was cut right through to the bone. I managed to rush to hospital and get the thumb sown back on. All is good now except that not all the nerves on my thumb have rejoined together. Always make safety a primary issue. Once again, thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable video that gave confidence to non-creative people = a talent in itself. As always with people who are good at what they do - you made it all look so simple.
Wow, i can't remember when whas the last time I watched a YoutTube turorial without my hand on forward arrow key. I think your voice is very calming and comforting on top of that you have very inormative content. Really great video furthermore an expert sharing her expertiese, nowdays people just go online find videows that have a few million views rewar the diy without having the porper knowledge. I could never do that, but I guess the joke is on me because they are laugin all the way to the bank.
So glad I found your site! Just what I needed to see. Now you have me wanting to make book cover lol. BTW I love the name - my dad grew up hating bitter melon but I did not get to try until I visited China - where it also carries a deeper meaning where I was studying martial arts. Anyway thank you I will be back to learn more from you!
I love this! the first time I attempted a case binding book it was a all a bit wrong, like the spine was loose, the measurements weren't correct.... It's a good thing i got more watercolor paper recently, guess I'll make another sketchbook! 😇 btw, if using watercolor paper, how many sheets per signature do you sugest? 🤔
2 sheets per signature! Ideally it's not super heavy weight because the spine and pages will be too stiff to turn. I experimented with this recently, it's best to add a few more layers of glue to support the binding, line the spine lightly (only mull ideally), use a thinner board (1.5 mm or cardstock) for the spine, and try a wide hinge gap (1 cm should be good). When opening the book, the signatures will be a bit stuck together, open them carefully and there may be a gap between them because the paper is thick, but hopefully there is enough glue and mull to keep the binding intact.
Good luck! I only made mini ones with homemade book cloth and a cardstock spine, you may have to figure it out through trial and error. Hope you’ll find a combo that works, I know how valuable watercolour paper is!
Thanks very much for this tutorial! It was super clear. I just have one question about the end papers, so are they're not glued all the way to the main paper of the book? Just a short strip along the spine? Thank you!
Soak the brush in water for a while (at least 30 mins) then rinse at the tap. Use soap if necessary. Pour the gluey water down the toilet to prevent glue from coating your pipes.
