      Could I ask then, what would you say is the difference between kettle and coptic stitch? They seem to be used interchangably on RUclips, but I thought they were distinct. Many thanks for any insights you can offer!

    Tysm! I have a lot of old unfinished sketchbooks I didn't want to continue drawing in since I've improved so much since, but also didn't want to waste the paper. I bound the unused pages and now have a whole new sketchbook that I can proudly say I made myself :) Will definitely be doing this again down the road.

    I've read some people rub wax on their covers to protect. Or you can find a matte varnish to spray on them. Just make sure it is archival-safe so it doesn't ruin your paper/book over time.

Don't get me wrong, it looks like a hot mess, lol. But I couldn't be happier and know that this is something that will take a lot of practice to get right. One way to make sure your holes line up is to use scrap paper to make a template with a thin sheet of scrap paper. Make it longer than your signatures, and mark where the bottom of the signature will be. Measure and mark your hole down the center of the template, than punch out the holes. Now you can put the template inside the signatures, line up the bottom, and punch! A bonus if this is you can label the size of the signatures and the type of binding and resume the template later to make another book!

    a couple days ago E.Lilly asked... who would actually do this, it takes too long? i don't think she really wants an answer (her "reply" feature is turned off. but in case she actually did? in my experience, artistic people are more creative and enjoy one of a kind things... whereas a mundane person would rather run to the store to get what everybody else has:) you can personalize this project in so many ways... we put the binding on the short side so our notebook opens extra long for landscape drawings.

      Yeah... if you don't have a spare hour to do a simple project like this, when do you have time to draw/paint/sketch anything? Ive made the equipment to do full on hard bound traditional bookbinding, and even that doesn't take too long once you have the tools - press, spine clamp, sewing frame, etc, the time sink is waiting for glue to dry after each step. These sketchbooks are literal childs play in the bookbinding world, anyone can do it with no tools and very little time, and you end up with a product that will bring endless satisfaction and even inspiration, as you feel compelled to fill every page with your best effort. I encourage everyone to try it.

      +Destiny The Sarcastic One It doesn't have to be, but it helps with the binding process (less tangles). Here's a tutorial on how to make your own, it's easy! bit.ly/WaxThread

      +Destiny The Sarcastic One I just saw another video where they waxed the thread themselves! They did it by pulling the thread over a stick of wax, while pushing on it with their thumb.

      As long as the thread is a thicker one, I don't see why you can't use the other types. I've used threads meant for leather on book repair before.

    I took a class for a semester in bookmaking, it is an art and your tutorial would have been an asset for me. I wasn't so into you tube a couple of years back. I will continue watching your vids now that I have subscribed. Thank you very much ! ;-}

    Can you help me? I don't understand signatures. Why is it important to stack four folded sheets together, compared to sewing every sheet or stacking more than four together?
    If my goal is to make a journal capable of taking glue-ins on the pages, which might sometimes be bulky, would this affect how many pages I should stack in a signature?

    • @laurens7469
      @laurens7469 9 лет назад

      You can have as many or as little pages in a signature! If your paper is very thick, usually two pages makes a good signature. This specific binding method works well with signatures; and I suppose making signatures helps to nicely group your pages together in your finished book. If you want a less bulky book, you can always try thinner paper or a different binding method c:

      Coptic stitch just requires signatures. Single sheet binding is on her channel too, so find that if you want to bind each sheet separately

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. 8 лет назад +1

      Actually, I experimented and found out that a single folded sheet works very well as a "signature". It does not have to be stacked with other sheets. Stacking is only done to save effort in binding the book. For my question above, the answer is YES, single folded sheets as a signature works very well, and does increase the roominess of the pages for folks who like to glue lots of stuff on later. When I made my single-folded-sheet-signature book I found the spine of the book was wider than the free edge, which was exactly what I wanted for my new journal.

    I watched your tutorial a few days ago and find it is a really good way of recycle one face printed pages, so I did it today. But at the end (last signature and cover), it's loose (the rest of the book is fine), and I don't like the sensation, have you any advice to avoid that ?

    • @SeaLemonDIY
      @SeaLemonDIY  10 лет назад +4

      Hmm. I know it may be slightly different than the front cover, but it's not enough to bother me really. The only way to adjust it afterward is to rebind that section. The next time you make a book you might have to adjust the tension (lightly pull as you bind) to avoid it being too loose. Hope that helps!
