    By far the best tutorial….and no matter how many of these I make, I still need to watch again….attaching that top signature and cover, though, always causes me trouble…..so tricky. Found best to slow down the speed of the video for that last signature

    Thank you. This video has been invaluable. I just got done with a 45-signature, 1440-page, 8" x 8" x 8" coptic stitch book, full of mono prints! It's an extraordinary bind technique that, I've read, goes back to the second century. Works well single thread with hemp cord, I've found.

    Hi Jennifer From Sea Lemon! Recently someone invited me to learn how to make journals. They know I'm an art addict, of sorts, hence the invite. I tried to learn via another instructor(s). Results? Frustration :( THEN I discovered Jennifer From Sea Lemon. I'm pretty old and spent almost 20 years teaching people how to use a variety of software programs. One educator told me I'm "A natural teacher"! That was one of the highest compliments I'd received as a teacher! YOU are "a natural", from this old guy's perspective! Your tutorial on Coptic Bookbinding is OUTSTANDING!! I've gone from "Frustration", to finishing my 4th little journal THANKS TO YOU!! You "rock" (as they say today)!! Please don't go away! Very cool stuff, kiddo!!!

    Just want to say thanks for all your binding tutorials! They've helped me bind awesome customized scorebooks for my company's recreational softball team. I don't have a lot of skills on the softball field, but I am really proud to know the art of baseball scorekeeping, and I've designed special score sheets for us-in addition to the standard scoring layout, they feature our team logo and colors and space to note where we went for drinks after each game! I couldn't have bound the books, which take a beating in the dugout and in our gear bag between games, without your videos. You're awesome!

    Excellent tutorial! I was teaching myself coptic stitch from a book, and couldn't get it. This tutorial made everything clear and I was able to quickly bind a notebook. One tip I learned from the book instructions: the process goes much more quickly if you use a curved needle. You can curve a needle yourself by grabbing the ends with pliers, holding the middle of the needle over a candle flame, and gently bending until you have an needle with a gentle L-shaped curve.

    This is a very useful tutoruial, and I've just used it to make an amazing journal with alternating lined and sketch paper that's just shy of 2 inches deep. Thing is, when I was still getting used to it and struggling with the first two signatures, I truly grew to hate that music. It wasn't bad when I was just watching the video, but when I was trying to follow along and becoming frustrated with my mistakes, it became the most irritating music I've ever heard.
    If you're curious, I got the hang of it around the third or fourth signature, and managed the other 20 on my own. I've only just come back for a refresher on the back cover.

    like the deep pink thread against the white pages best. Shows off each stitch so clearly. Appreciate the tie off when you ran short on thread. I’ve been tangled up in the long lengths of thread before trying to calculate and use how much I’ll need to complete a book. Thank you.

      @@SeaLemonDIY I am 5 years late but the benefit of folded sheets (and you can fold 300gsm just fine) is that the middle page of a signature is a full page. Yes, there is a thread but there is also a huge area that you can go wild on, which is what we do a lot with watercolor, wild stuff.

    I just wanted to offer some advice from experience. It's really important to use wax thread because if you don't your book will be very unstable and the pages will move because the binding will be lose. If you don't have wax thread you can just make your own it's really easy. You just rub wax on the thread you're using ( I used beeswax cause it's really sticky and will have a stronger hold when binding). Any ways thanks so much for this tutorial it's really easy to understand!!

    • @mimaythelavendermenace
      @mimaythelavendermenace 6 лет назад

      TheSydneycasey So sorry for the late reply but as an alternative, can you paint a coat of glue on the thread or do you really have to use wax?

    • @dracenstein5556
      @dracenstein5556 6 лет назад +10

      Sam The weirdo who likes to art ....... not necessary, ive made lots with and without and see no difference the wax is more for keeping tangle free thread. But all my books you will never tell one from the other , if you do it right your threads will stay tight and flexible and will not loosen and if your book gets " hot" the wax will melt onto your pages in the binding as " from experience" that has happened to me, so theres that too.

      May I ask another question, will wax from a candle or a crayon do? Its pretty much all I have right now around my house XD

    • @TanteDorle
      @TanteDorle 5 лет назад +4

      @@mimaythelavendermenace I'm not Gary but I can answer this: yes, you can use a candle but I wouldn't recommend a crayon. Just hold the candle & pull your thread tight over "the curb". If you left small "grooves" in the candle, you did it it right ;)
      But keep in mind what Gary mentioned before, the wax may smear or you've got it on your hands & smudge the paper with. This will leave you with resistant stains while drawing with watercolours, so handle it carefully.
      Maybe you wanna use twine or buttonhole thread instead. Both are pretty sturdy threads that won't wear out or loosen, plus the latter is available in many different colours.
      Happy book-binding :)

    Hey Jennifer. Have watched numerous videos of yours, most given thumbs up and for those I didn't 'wuz' only because I forgot as I moved on to other Sea Lemon videos. I may go back and correct my forgetfulness later and will subscribe after this comment. I just wanted to say to you that your videos are among the best on RUclips (YT), if not the Internet. They are well planned, filmed and presented with just the correct amount of dialog, no unnecessary filler nonsense. "Just the facts, ma'am." as Sgt. Joe Friday might say.
    My secondary reason for commenting, the first being my compliment to you. You provide excellent, additional information in the "Show More" section and I appreciate that. I would, also, be interested in learning the recording tools you use (i.e., camera type, camera accessories (tripod or other supporting brackets), camera settings, software you used for editing, background music sources, etc.) as I haven't a clue on how this is done. (I'm, almost, older than dirt--you get the picture.) I am a YT-taker, not a YT-giver and I may want to contribute something to YT one day but, only if it's close to the quality you provide. I have seen where some YT contributors provide their recording information. The more recording info provided by YTubers the better, I think.
    I hope my request doesn't over burden you. I have read many requests by commenters to your videos and, to my past college professors who always announced on the first day of their classes, "There is no such thing as a dumb question.", I would simply reply, "The IS such a thing as a dumb question." and some of your commenters have asked useless, dumb questions. Hopefully, mine isn't. Once produced and saved via Notepad, you could easily copy and paste your recording information to your future videos changing/updating the information when changes occur.
    Unfortunately, I don't "face" and I don't "twit" so, can't help you there. But, I will speak highly of you when I converse with my fellow old farts. Some of them don't know what a "RUclips" is. I might have to say, "No, it's not a special tire inner tube, Jack (or Al or John or Bill.)" Car/truck tires used to be inflated via inner-tubes, you know. Then, maybe you don't. Doesn't matter. ;)
    Lord, I write too much. Sorry 'bout that. Gonna' leave it, as is, though.
    My best to you and keep on truckin'.

    First of all, lovely tutorials! And you're a goddess for answering comments so sweetly. I know you do, because I searched them before asking my question. I've been sewing coptic blocks for years, but your tute is what helped me finally understand attaching the covers. My problem is that I'm having trouble keeping the first few stitches tight, when attaching the first signature and cover. Tips? Thanks!

      Almost all the signature of mine are tight except the front cover and the signature with it.. any tips?

    Ho ly hell. I have no idea how long it took me (a few rerun episodes of yugioh, I don’t have an actual time though) but I just made a book. I JUST MADE A BOOK. OUT OF NORMAL A4 PAPER AND A GODDAMN CAT FOOD BOX (as the cover)
    You, you are a god. This always looked so difficult but now that I’ve done it once I assure you I’ll be doing it again.
    It’s not the prettiest book, nor the most stable (since I didn’t have waxed thread, I had a choice between sewing thread and thick yarn, and since I didn’t have a needle big enough for yarn..) but it is a book. Thank you so much.

      And 20 hours later, another book created (didn’t take 20 hours, I just slept and such.) I love this tutorial so much.

    hahaha, no way. If anything, it's pretty awesome if I guy knew how to bind books! On top of that, it doesn't really matter whether its girly or not. This skill saves money and its really fun to do! If you do it, that's totally awesome and you should keep doing it if it's something you enjoy!
