All of my favorites are that long, too. I'm dividing them into volumes by the major arcs/plot progression acts. It keeps the story from feeling split awkwardly by taking advantage of its natural lulls!
Imagine getting your friend a hardcover of their favourite fanfic for their birthday. Imagine your friend getting you a hardcover of your favourite fanfic for your birthday.
Imagine someone one day in the future finding this in a thrift store and thinking “wow! This book is so old and interesting!” And they find out it’s a fanfic about minecraft block people but pirates. I love it.
imagine they dont know about those minecraft block people, end up enjoying the story and being like “this is good but why do they have such weird names??”
@@February_arts_ I could have mispelled the name, but it's that infamous Harry Potter fanfic with the author's heavily goth OC. ColeyDoesThings has a whole video talking about it.
Tips: Remember to double check that you didn't lose any formatting when copying over: italics, different fonts, page breaks. If you want to avoid page trimming, measure what paper you have (should be 8 1/2" by 11") and look for books where the pages are around 5 1/2" by 8 1/2" (the big page folded in half). If you're using Word to add page numbers, check under Headers & Footers for an option called "Different Odd & Even Pages." If you check that box, you can make your odd pages have numbers on the bottom right and your even pages have numbers on the bottom left, so they'll always be in the outside corner (always good to double check with a test page or two). Addition to the last point: There should be a way to break your book into two sections: One for the title page and table of contents, and one for the rest of the book. If you do it correctly, you can have page numbers -start- at chapter 1, instead of the book plate. I do need to google this step every time though, as it's complicated. Control+f Is your friend! I use it to double check that the work is consistent (Nick names being capitalized, "six-year-old" being always hyphenated or never, redhead being always one word or always two, etc.) If you feel up to it, go ahead and do a run of editing over the work. I'm doing minimal changes; basically fixing typos I find and altering sentences that read weird to me. If you do not fear embarrassment, see if your school has free printing. I try to print only 20 pages at a time, so it doesn't look like I'm pirating a textbook or anything.
Copy editing/grammar fun fact: "six-year-old" should be hyphenated only when it's being used as a compound adjective! ("The six-year-old boy." vs. "The boy is six years old.") ☺️
This! I had to reprint almost my entire book because the italics didn't transfer, and I only noticed after revisiting this comment and actively looking for it :')
i turned a fanfic called 'More Like You' into a hardcover book as a gift for a friend and used a handmade cover with my art for the fanfic, my friend told the fanfic author about it. And the author loved it so much they commissioned me to design the cover for their original book! I wanted to come back and thankyou. It because of this video that i stumbled upon on a random day that these chain of events happened. Thank you so much @Jess Less
Any time a person says fanfic is bad just remember. Ullyses by James Joyce is a fanfic of the odyssey, Song of Achilles is a fanfic of the Illiad, interview with a vampire is a fanfic of Dracula, and the Arthurian legend is just a ridiculously long fanfic of the original story.
I think what people overlook is that a lot of fanfic _is_ bad because there's just so much of it. Anyone of any age, skill level, and maturity can write it and it _all_ gets grouped into _one_ category of "fanfic" It doesn't matter if it's a talented writer turning a bunch of well loved and multidimensional characters into a deep and relatable story about overcoming trauma and choosing your family (like Ad Astra by Hellenite, for ex) or some 12 y/o writing about two straight dudes making out - it's all considered fanfic.
Exactly !! So much works of literature are the results of fanfic thought process of 'what if'. One of the most important piece of French literature to this day is a literal fanfiction of The Odyssey with Odysseus’s son as the main character. Considerated as such an important piece of literature, it got integrated into the schooling curriculum of the, at the time, reigning family’s son (grandson of Louis the 14th).
My first thought after seeing this video was also Passerine! That story deserves to be put into a book and probably even sold in actual book stores because that thing’s quality!
@@Charlottiepops Of course. I'm just saying that for example Passerine is in my opinion way better than some actually monetized books I've read and it's a shame that the author doesn't get the chance to monetize their hard work, if they wanted to. :)
I desperately need to do this with all of my AO3 bookmarks. I also think it'd be cool to combine a bunch of one-shots from the same fandom into one book - so it's a sort of collection of "short stories."
I thought the same. My favorite fics are only a few chapters so i printed them out and put in a mini three ring binder with custom cloth cover to make it look fancy.
Some of my favourite DSMP (mainly sbi) fics: - Tommyinnit’s Clinic for Supervillians by bonesandthebees (finished) - Ours Poetica by Zeeskeit (unfinished) - This is Not an Act of Spite by Alex_Wants_To_Die and ellabellachicketychella (unfinished) - Hush Now (You Were Lost but Now You’re Found) by CorpseArt (unfinished) Also I would recommend basically all of bonesandthebees fics, their writing style is so nice and fluid!
a few years ago I looked into "where can I get a book printed online" but realized having a 900k fic printed at an online store is a a pain in the ass so I gave up, never considered actually binding it myself....now I might give that a try some time HMMM
@@brrrh105 im reading one thats almost finished and is 900k roughly, except its only the first in a 2 part series, the second part hasnt even begun to be posted yet💀💀
I watched this and immediately begged my dad to take me to a second hand bookstore. The whole trip I was like “I’m gonna tear this book apart~” Two days of formatting and one day of folding and I’m almost done!! I’ve got some glueing left but by the end of today I hope to have a hardcover copy of Several Witches Are Typing by azhdarchidaen! It’s an Owl House fic and it’s reallyreallyreallyreally good!!!
My mother works in a library where she repairs books. Sometimes, the books are so old that they go to be recycled to be made into new books. But this time ahahah she saved me the hardcover shells of four (4) books. It is time for me to print out that PremingerxOC fanfic ahaha.
remember kids, make sure the author of the fic is okay with their works being bound, and NEVER take commissions to bind fics or sell any physical copies you make of fics, that is illegal and jeopardizes the ability for fanfiction to exist in the future (that said if things were different i can definitely think of a few fics i would love to have as books)
One day I just want a shelf on my fanfic like this so when someone comes over I can just see the confusion in their face when they open a book to see myct fight dragons for like 100 chapters-
I've been binding fanfic for years now, I have well over 200 different fanfics of varying sizes, and some with multiple volumes too. And I'm so glad to see other fans doing this as well! Thanks Jess for adding more fans to this niche craft! I cant wait to see what you do next :D
Any tips on where to buy good paper in bulk? I see a lot of sites, but I don't know which paper to get and I don't like printer paper because it's really thin. Any suggestions?
@@abbee_6557 it can be scary yeah. But sometimes it just takes trial and error to get into a good groove for making books. You got this, I believe in you! :)
I wish I could do this. I have many favorite fanfic authors but they're just gone now and their amazing wonderful stories. Only remembered by those who had read them. To counter this sadness, I always think they got picked by a publisher and their stories are being enjoyed and appreciated outside the fandom which this is the reason for some of them being gone.
Man, if someone did this for my fanfic, my life would be complete. There is no reward that money can buy that could top this. The dedication it takes to do this project for the love of someone else's story is insane. The real MVPs are the fans that read these works and this is the reason why we write. And I think I can speak on behalf of others who write that If we can just make one person's day better by tapping into their imagination, it makes everything all worthwhile. Congrats to the fellow who had their story enshrined in physical history.
I have this fanfiction that I've been meaning to turn into a book- It called "Drinks in new york city" in Ao3 AND HOLY HELL IS IT A MASTSRPIECE- I 100% recommend it if you want to read more heartbreaking fics besides Passerine! Btw, Thanks for the great tutorial Jess! I've been meaning to try doing this as project. Real helpful :]
I just found out my comfort fanfic, that i've read at least 15 times so far, has nearly 400k (398 842 to be exact) words thanks to this video and I am shooketh. edit: it is also nowhere near finished
@@gisellealarcon5656 if your book is too thick, use string and bee wax, but MAKE SURE ITS WAXED ENOUGH!!! There’s a chance that you get the wax off with every pass through the holes, wax it when you feel like “yeah, I should do that) or it’ll start knotting on itself and you’ll cry… again…
Wait you just saying that is genius, I can finally read it at school since we’re not allowed phones or digital books omg I NEED to do this sometime to aytd or some other super good fanfics 😊
Wow that's really cool ! If you are looking for some reading, I recommend "Change fate by being aggressively kind" by sircantus on ao3, where it is literally Philza who adopts "monsters of the apocalypse" turning out to be the rest of the sbi, as per usual. And also "Fanmail to an Immortal" by PiperTheViper also on ao3. This fic is not finished and "quite" short for the moment, but it makes me laugh so here it is. And finally, "RacoonInnit is Pog at Villainy" by AJ_the_BreadKing on ao3, which is a complete story and just exceptionally funny :D
@@Tsoos I honestly think no author would mind another hobbyist doing that. Of course, they would have to ask the authors. I imagine the problem would be with the original work's Copyright holder.
When you make it into a book, you can see just how many pages they are. It's astonishing just how much love and time fanfic writers put into work. I'm always so grateful that they provide quality books that could have won prizes to read for free.
Tips: (I love this so much and wanted to add some additional advice as someone who professionally learned bookbinding as well as editing! :)) 1. I'd personally run chunks of the text or the thing as a whole through a spelling program or re-read it and fix spelling mistakes just because I'm a perfectionist and not only want to honour the work but also do it justice to spell it the way it was meant to :) 2. I would set the text to full justification with the last row adjusted to the left, remove AO3's blank lines (which make sense for digital paragraphs) and instead create the analogue paragraph indentations. This would also save lots of paper. It does work best in InDesign for sure, which is what I'm working with and I know that non-professionals might struggle with these adjustments, I just wanted to recommend them anyway, because most of these are doable in word too! :) 3. I'd use a thinner thread so as not create large gaps between pages in the inner book, I think the thicker one totally works in this case though for the aesthetic! 4. Usually for a high quality hardcover bookbinders will add a piece of colourful fabric that is glued to the back of the inner book. It can be just at the top and bottom or all the way through. If there's supposed to be a bookmark this can simply be glued underneath that. (I sadly can't find the proper vocabulary to name these things in english cause it's not my first language) With the added fabric this makes for a more neat look when opening a hardcover, since the inner spine might get exposed and the fabric covers that up! 5. I'd account for additonal page length and cut the entire inner book with an electrical paper cutter after finishing to make the entire thing smooth. I don't know about your country but in mine we have access to these in copy-shops. This would also enable fore-edge painting!
I wish I had downloaded one that was in progress, I think the author's account ended up hacked. The Viking's Throne by BlueBlaze77 was really getting good and it's just...gone. I can't find it archived anywhere.
@@MakoKitten no, it's actually still there on the AO3. I looked it up and it has full 11 chapters. Not sure if there is supposed to be a sequel cuz I haven't read it before
@@WhatTheFlo No, it's actually not there. The Viking's Throne is over 80 chapters long, it's a Hermione Granger/Oliver Wood/Charlie Weasley fanfiction by BlueBlade77. There is nothing matching it on AO3 when I look it on AO3. You can find some of the chapters on some scammy sites like novelww, but they're ripped from AO3 with no mention of the author at all. Their account is gone, their works are gone, and all that's really left is a reddit post.
@@sofilupi It is, but somehow it worked. It takes place post war and Hermione ends up working in Romania with Charlie and they co-parent a small brood of baby dragons, it was a really well told story and honestly it could have been a novel in its own right.
Me: yeah I’m going to do that with flowers from the 1970’s Also me: * realises that I have exams in three weeks * Nevermind I’ll do that during summerbreak Thank you so much for the amazing video and project. Your Karl Jacobs memory book tutorial really helped me to finish the cosplay. I want to thank you for the amazing content you give us!!!
Flowers From 1970 is easily one of the BEST dsmp fan-fics! I sobbed during that story, if u do do this with ff1970 hope u have fun! "Take Care of those flowers wrong numbers"
This has given me a perfect idea for my best friend's birthday present. They're a fanfic writer and artist but mostly write one-shots, this makes me want to make a hardcover collection of their fics for them
Some of my favorite and recommended dsmp fics (mostly tommy-centric and sbi): - Into the Night by Interjection - Passerine by thcscus / blujama - His Curse of Binding by bari_astralis - Blood Magic by Amilia_Farem - Black Bird Fly by MolyPollyKinz - three months of letters by IDONTWRITELEMONS (wedontwritelemons) - TommyInnit's unbeatable method of avoiding sudden death by eneli - tommyinnit's clinic for supervillains by bonesandthebees - Ad Astra and De Terra by Hellenite - oh dear, can you see me? by findingkairos - Hush Now (You Were Lost but Now You’re Found) by CorpseArt - We've taken different paths but I know we'll always end up on the same one by Alexander_Wesker i find a lot of them as hidden gems
tommys unbeatale method of avoiding sudden death (tumosad) is really funny! i fell out of my chair laughing once. ive read through the *whole* thing, its just vibes
A nicely done tutorial for DIY bookbinding. A couple of tips for you: Elmer's "school glue" is PVA glue. Also, when doing the pressing of the signatures, a low to medium clothing iron can do in a matter of moments what a can of fruit salad can't do in 8 hours. Optionally, you could add a ribbon for a book marker glued to the spine of the signatures before setting the cover.
The only fanfic I've listened to is Passerine. If there's an audio book of this one I think I'll check it out too. Seriously cool to be bringing these works of art to life!
ruclips.net/p/PLwNLJ1kXYZoSWYCDiEeN_YDb0pIpEbjsp I posted this a moment ago with no context and have now realised how that seems weird or scam-y. It's a link to the passerine podcast RUclips channel, they have readings of a couple mcyt first and fortunately for you this is one of them.
As long as they don’t sell them it’s fine unless it’s like completely their own characters and their everything is theirs but if it’s someone else’s work likes a Harry Potter fanfic and then you print it and sell it without the writers consent or J. K. Rowling‘s consent that’s illegal
If you don't want to tear apart an old book there's a great video by sea lemon on how to make a hard book cover! And nerdforge have a lot of videos showing how to make the cover look more vintage. It will take more effort but I'm putting this here in hopes people who feel very uncomfortable with using actual old books (like myself) will see!! hope it helps
I've commented before and I'll comment again, but this time to tell you I have finally attempted to do the thing! I have friends birthday coming up and as fanfiction is something we have bonded tremendously over, I decided this would be the perfect gift. I've got everything printed out and now my signatures are folded and being pressed for stitching. I'm very excited about how this is turning out and now that I've tried it once, I foresee a lot more in my future...
I recently became comrades with the author of my favorite fanfic, and he's not finished updating it yet. When it's done, it's getting downloaded onto my computer so I can bind it for myself. If the author wants a copy, I will most definitely make one for him. In no way will I ever profit from it.
I would love to do this with Tommyinnit's Clinic for Supervillians by bonesandthebees. It's one of, if not, the best fanfics I've ever read. If anyone out there is looking for dsmp or superhero content, or just likes stories that have a way of questioning or flipping moral dilemmas on their heads, I would highly recommend!
"All the young dudes" definitely deserves all the hype it's been getting recently, definitely my favourite fanfiction. other than that "Ukiyo" by Sharleena and "The Brightest Stars Shine Here" by strawberrysummers.
Yes omg I actually came to this video bc I was considering binding ATYD- now I’m thinking binding a shorter fic sounds like a good present for my friend who’s in a lot of similar fandoms :P The fanfic I’m referring to is “Habits of a Lifetime” by out_there if anyone was wondering~ it’s legitimately the best mycroft/lestrade fic ive ever read
0:10 Yes!! A whole series was on AO3, genuinely some of, if not THE best literature I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading! And then! It was deleted off of the site!!! I die a little every time I remember it. Now I know to always download my favorite fics to hold onto them forever!
@@woodenkat8971 I tried to, it took me to the sign-in because it was only available to account holders, and ever time I signed in, it reset to the original page. I don’t know if it will work, but I’ll try again!
Okay, this is COOL AS CRAP. Not me freaking out over my favorite fic and Wolfy's art printed in color and how flipping cool the cover is. Everything about this is amazing and I'd love to do it myself, hopefully with some of my own writing someday?? Which also means I'll need to actually write so I'd better get doing that more consistently *nervous laughter* but AMAZING JOB
Jess, I think that the thumbnail should not have been changed, why? Because it feels like doing so, people are "deleting" him from the fandom if I can put it that way. I understand that people might be doing that out of respect for his family or others still grieving, but it feels wrong? He's worked so hard to get where he is right now and I think that removing him from videos and such is simply erasing his memory. I don't want that to happen and I don't think others would either. I'm not hating on you. I'm simply stating my feelings toward the thumbnail change. Thank you for reading this whole comment and if anyone reading this disagrees, please express it respectfully, I don't want this comment to be the source of a comment war.
You make some valid points, and I agree that we should keep honoring him and all he did for the community. I am by no means trying to erase him from the video. Just at this time, I don't want it to come across that I'm capitalizing on his image. For this thumbnail in particular, since Phil is just as important of a character in the story, I thought it would be the most respectful thing to do. And if I'm being honest, it made me really emotional to see his character in the thumbnail every time I looked at my channel. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. We are all going through a tough time grieving his passing and figuring out how to manage.
@@JessLess Of course. You too are correct on many things. I think Philza should stay on the thumbnail not only for the time being because he truly is just as important as Techno is in the story. I should have clarified that in the original comment. I have just been seeing videos and such removing him as of late so I guess I was just scared (not that you would do such a thing). That's not the point though. What I'm trying to say is you have many good reasons for changing the thumbnail and you should keep it as it is currently. However, once time passes and we come to terms with our feelings towards the situation and the situation itself no less. Could you have Philza and Techno both on the thumbnail? It would be reminiscent of the original thumbnail and emphasize that they are both equally important to the story. Of course, you don't have to do any of this if you don't want to, it's more of a personal preference really. I just want to thank you for talking to me about this during such a tragic yet new situation at not all of us have fully grasped.
As a Fanfiction writer myself, this is something amazing, this brings our stories to life more so then how we first thought would go, and this is also inspires me to maybe do this with some of my own stories as well
One of my favorite fanfics, Symphonious Solitude on Ao3, is about Fundy escaping the DSMP and finding a home in Hermitcraft, I am still reading it, and its already one of my favorites ^^
I actually have one where Tommy escaped the smp to hermit craft and got the help he needed plus there’s a bunch of drama at the end “Shells In The Foam” I forget the author
I have a little trick for if you want to create a very old looking book, maybe even going towards a wheathered kinda treasure-mappy way (if you know what kinda look I mean lol): Just use cold coffee and spill a tiny amount on every page, dap it off with a kitchen towel and let it dry. It's gonna "wrinkle" a bit, you can leave it like this or press it down. When you want the discolouring to be fainter, mix the coffee with water and dillute it down a bit. You can propably build the colour up a tiny bit too by doing this twice for example, so if you're unsure about the amount of water you want to use, then put a bit more in and maybe do this a second time if it's fainter than you want it to be. I wouldn't do that process more times than that though. And remember to always let the pages first dry completely before continuing!
This is officially my new favourite youtube video of all time. I'm not even joking. I am TOTALLY doing this, my only problem NOW is to choose just one fanfic!!! (and get supplies lmao!) Also love how it was next to Heartstopper on your bookshelf HAHA thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! I've barely ever been this excited about a potential project, but as an avid reader, mcyt fan and artist, it's something I know I'll enjoy :D
This video inspired me to bind a fanfic for my mom, over 300,000 words, it took months, i even had to split it into 4 separate books. But she said it was the best gift she had ever gotten! So, thank you Jess, for this wonderful video.
13:38 that mid video rant... that is truth and we do write because we love our favourite characters (a little too much in some cases) and go on to write like what an eternal fic about it! As someone who is going through it myself, with writing something I never thought I'd write... (yes a literal book.. :) ) I really appreciate people like this in the fandom culture! You go Jess!
Passarine is amazing. If you ship Dnf, Flowers from 1970 if just **chefs kiss** but sad. There is also a really nice finished SBI one called “pleasing a storm” on Wattpad, it’s amazing.
"George, I just wanted to say one thing, and thats Thank You." Clays voice was so broken and George found something off-putting about it, "Thank You for all the late night talks, the stories you'd tell, everything. You changed my life, thats for sure. I just cant have my heart in 2020 when it belongs to 1970. I'll fall for you more, and if i go deeper i might not get out of it. Mabye, in another life, you and I were together happily, the way i want it to be. The way it should be. But it was just bad timing"- ff1970
I found that actually downloading the fic as an HTML file helped when copy/pasting by keeping all the formatting from AO3 so I didn't have to go back and add all the italics back in.
Passerine on Ao3. It’s amazing and sad. That, or Butterfly Reign. Or Tommyinnit’s clinic for supervillains. They are my favourites and are also really popular.
My best friend and I have a fic that I will not disclose here that we call "the cursed fic" because it's s just the worst possible thing you could ever imagine reading with your own two eyes. I thank you for the wonderful Christmas present idea
I turned "Not easily conquered" into a book! It's a trilogy, so I made three books and I'm in love with them 😭😭 I've loved this fic for years and it's amazing to read it in print, and knowing that I made it myself makes it even better (I even like the mistakes I made along the way lol). Thank you for this video! ❤❤
Me at past: I'm going to translate "Bones in the ocean" on my native language just because there are no translation Also me: you know what? I will make an entire translated book >:)
my favourite author picked up DIY sewing/binding book (idk what it's called in english) as a hobby recently so she asked readers if there's anyone interested in printed version of her story. it turns out good, the binding is not perfect but neat enough. the bind is very strong compared to other mass printed book and I love it🥰
I saw this video a year ago and was so wanting to do this, but i didn't have money to print THAT much text and i don't own a printer (i am baby, i have nothin). But now! Now i got unrestricted access to my mums work printer! I am going to print my entire bookmarks collection! As well as print out any fics i just want to read this summer and seem cool. I am gonna waste so much paper and not feel guilty one bit. Screw caring about enviropment! Screw reuse recycle! Your girl's gotta print MCYT and Naruto fanfiction on company ink, paper, time and money. Your video inspires me to do evil.
I’m a paid author and personally yes, writing actually gives me tranquility, seeing the image that is playing in my head turn into words is extremely satisfying that I got carried away, once I am done with writing a book, I ended up surprised myself on how much words I have written and also at the success of making a whole novel! Your book binding skills deserve a huge applause, the determination and effort you put is just mind blowing itself and I love to see more of it!😍❤️
Didn't break only Ao3, but the entire internet Glass Animals may have become famous only thanks to the fix, as Heatwaves (the song) after the big boom in ao3, got... Suspiciously Popular. Here we are now with Heatwaves on the radio and me crying.
@@Doubl3_Black I heard heatwaves on the speakers at a Main Event and immediately texted my friend about it. I have not read the fic yet because everyone says it makes them cry and I don’t want to cry yet.
Quick remark and tips for making a fanfic book look as professional as possible: 1. Often in published books, chapter titles (or story titles for a collection of written pieces) are set on uneven page number (1-3-177 etc.) which results in the title being on the right side of when reading. 2. You can Google which font are commonly used in books. There’s Time new Roman, Gamond, Palatino or Georgia etc. 3. Indented paragraphs for me is a must. It makes everything more readable, coupled with the paragraph spacing. 4. About pages being upside down when printed: Idk if it’s my computer, the printer I’m using or Adobe Reader but when I print tested the first booklet of the fic I wanted to bookbinding, all the back side of the pages are upside down. I tried changing the settings on Adobe but nothing works and I can’t access the printer settings so what I did is download a pdf reader app from Apple Store (I’m on Mac) I hope it will fix the issue.
i was printing some pages to check if adobe set the offsetting right, and like for you, it printed upside down, but mostly the main problem was that it printed the pages that were supposed to be on opposite sides of the same paper on two different ones T-T. i don't think my printer is sophisticated enough to print on both sides of a single sheet of paper in one go but not even this,,, did you have this problem as well? i don't want to print every page one by one lol
@@letizia2827 I went to my school printer and accessed the file I wanted to print directly on it. In the settings of the file, I switched the F/B printing to F/B (short side). I also downloaded a different PdF reader than Adobe, ticked the automatic rotation. But depending on your printer, you need to find to find the print on short side option directly on the PDF reader.
This was so cool! I really wanna bind Ad Astra and De Terra, both by Hellenite, but the word count is very daunting and idk if I can fit the both of them in one book lol
I'm doing this with Passerine! I decided to handwrite it, so it's taking a long time, I currently have 4 of an estimated 22 signatures. I aged the pages with tea as well, I think it's going to turn out really well.
Omg, there was this one fanfic that actually got a comic called Sooner Or Later, You're Gonna Be Mine. I love that fic so much- lowkey sad its discontinued
SO PROUD OF YOU AND YOUR PROGRESS JESS!!! Also, if you haven’t read it, “the little children raise their open filthy palms” by thanotaphobia (blue000jay) is a good SBI Zombie AU on AO3. Obviously Passerine by Thcscus is also incredible and I’ve been meaning to make that one into a hardcover so this will be a great tutorial for starting that project!
YES I love “Bones in the Ocean” so much, it made me cry so many times but it’s so cute 😭💕 And it’s also so well written, I can only dream to reach that level of writing 😔✨
Seeing that thickness knowing that that's 80k+ has me wondering just how long the 200k+ fanfic I read would be. Probably have to separate it into volumes💀
I have a few. the My Hero ones are "Type Two Hero", "Quirkless Reject'" and "UA Ranger" this one has been redone so I recommend the revamped version. The mcyt one is "Ascension of the Dragon God". The original is "Never Wake a Sleeping Dragon" and both have more adult themes but the Ascension is the kinder one of the two
You can get the page order in word, no Adobe required. Just go into page layout, it should be in the advance margins menu. There, you can also select how many pages are in the signature. This also lets you print the whole book all at once instead of one signature at a time, you just have to pay attention to your page numbers. The advance setting also has a feature for mirrored margins that are wider on the inside to account for lost space in the binding. Very handy if you want to use Japanese stab stitching instead, but also to minimize the outside margin to fit more on a single page. Or just give yourself a little wiggle room for a little wobbliness. My first book is diffidently on the looser side. It's The Colony of Gotham by Crzyfun and the spine is duck tape. Currently working on Embers by Vathara.
8:10, you can use an exacto knife or super sharp knife and a ruler to cut the pages instead of a paper trimmer. It just probably won't be completely exact.
Tommyinnit's Clinic for Supervillians and Tommyinnit's Unbeatable Method of Avoiding Sudden Death are both really good! I could go on and on about over 100 fics that I have read and love in the MCYT community but then I would be here for hours so I'm just gonna leave you with those two absolutely iconic fics.

Never please never ;-;
Oh god the horror if that happens
@@February_arts_ it is the worst thing that you will ever enjoy reading it's so bad you can't tell if it's a troll or a serious attempt at writing
Tips:
Remember to double check that you didn't lose any formatting when copying over: italics, different fonts, page breaks.
I use it to double check that the work is consistent (Nick names being capitalized, "six-year-old" being always hyphenated or never, redhead being always one word or always two, etc.)
If you feel up to it, go ahead and do a run of editing over the work. I'm doing minimal changes; basically fixing typos I find and altering sentences that read weird to me.
If you do not fear embarrassment, see if your school has free printing. I try to print only 20 pages at a time, so it doesn't look like I'm pirating a textbook or anything.
This all comes from my current work in progress: binding the batman fic Jason Todd: the Not So Outlaw by GoAwayOlivia. 10/10
^^^^^^^^^
These are all really good tips!
Oh my gosh that’s so cool
That’s amazing.
That's really cool
Amazing I am amazed you are amazing keep going and you will continue to succeed! God bless!!!
How did you do the cover with art on it?!
And a lot of Shakespeare, who also wrote RPF.
Don’t forget Dante’s Divine Comedy
I think what people overlook is that a lot of fanfic _is_ bad because there's just so much of it. Anyone of any age, skill level, and maturity can write it and it _all_ gets grouped into _one_ category of "fanfic"
It doesn't matter if it's a talented writer turning a bunch of well loved and multidimensional characters into a deep and relatable story about overcoming trauma and choosing your family (like Ad Astra by Hellenite, for ex) or some 12 y/o writing about two straight dudes making out - it's all considered fanfic.
Exactly !! So much works of literature are the results of fanfic thought process of 'what if'. One of the most important piece of French literature to this day is a literal fanfiction of The Odyssey with Odysseus’s son as the main character. Considerated as such an important piece of literature, it got integrated into the schooling curriculum of the, at the time, reigning family’s son (grandson of Louis the 14th).
and dante's inferno is a self-insert fanfic of the bible/famous figures
I've been thinking about doing this with Passerine but I didn't know where to get started, Jess my saviour 🙌

My first thought after seeing this video was also Passerine! That story deserves to be put into a book and probably even sold in actual book stores because that thing’s quality!
@@karamelalb2328 sadly making profit from fanfic can put the writers and fan work in general in legal danger😪
@@Charlottiepops Of course. I'm just saying that for example Passerine is in my opinion way better than some actually monetized books I've read and it's a shame that the author doesn't get the chance to monetize their hard work, if they wanted to.

17:32 (Salesman voice) “Now you too can read fan fiction in public & claim to be reading a thrilling novel from the 1800s!”
Tips:
(I love this so much and wanted to add some additional advice as someone who professionally learned bookbinding as well as editing! :))
1. I'd personally run chunks of the text or the thing as a whole through a spelling program or re-read it and fix spelling mistakes just because I'm a perfectionist and not only want to honour the work but also do it justice to spell it the way it was meant to :)
What’s so good about AO3 is that you can really bookmark the gems. “The Changeling” by Annerb is my favourite in the Harry Potter community

I just want to thank you for talking to me about this during such a tragic yet new situation at not all of us have fully grasped.
i didn't know someone could be so cultivated to make a video about this fine art of, not just fanfiction but binding the old art of fanficiton.
Who’s the author?
i remember this :D
I actually have one where Tommy escaped the smp to hermit craft and got the help he needed plus there’s a bunch of drama at the end
“Shells In The Foam” I forget the author
A rift through worlds is a good one
I have a little trick for if you want to create a very old looking book, maybe even going towards a wheathered kinda treasure-mappy way (if you know what kinda look I mean lol):
Just use cold coffee and spill a tiny amount on every page, dap it off with a kitchen towel and let it dry.
(and get supplies lmao!)
Also love how it was next to Heartstopper on your bookshelf HAHA
thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! I've barely ever been this excited about a potential project, but as an avid reader, mcyt fan and artist, it's something I know I'll enjoy :D
I would totally turn "Ad Astra" (by Hellenite on AO3) into a book but I have absolutely no time, lol.
Love that story
I completely agree its so amazing
This video inspired me to bind a fanfic for my mom, over 300,000 words, it took months, i even had to split it into 4 separate books.
But she said it was the best gift she had ever gotten!
So, thank you Jess, for this wonderful video.
13:38
that mid video rant... that is truth and we do write because we love our favourite characters (a little too much in some cases) and go on to write like what an eternal fic about it!
You could try this with Passerine next time! :"D
I love how perfectly you summarized fanfiction.
When i heard the word pirate techno, i cried its only been a few hour since the news he passed…may our king Rest In Peace
Blood for the Blood god
Legends never die
My best friend and I have a fic that I will not disclose here that we call "the cursed fic" because it's s just the worst possible thing you could ever imagine reading with your own two eyes. I thank you for the wonderful Christmas present idea
I turned "Not easily conquered" into a book! It's a trilogy, so I made three books and I'm in love with them 😭😭 I've loved this fic for years and it's amazing to read it in print, and knowing that I made it myself makes it even better (I even like the mistakes I made along the way lol). Thank you for this video! ❤❤
Me at past: I'm going to translate "Bones in the ocean" on my native language just because there are no translation
Also me: you know what?
Your book binding skills deserve a huge applause, the determination and effort you put is just mind blowing itself and I love to see more of it!😍❤️
Okay, but we need to honor heatwaves as the legend it is. The fic literally broke Ao3; it deserves a hardcover.
Yes it does
Link?
@@cryptid_user5080 If youtube deletes my comment it's "Heat Waves" by "tbhyourelame"
Edit: It's also a dnf shipping fic
Didn't break only Ao3, but the entire internet Glass Animals may have become famous only thanks to the fix, as Heatwaves (the song) after the big boom in ao3, got... Suspiciously Popular.
Here we are now with Heatwaves on the radio and me crying.
@@Doubl3_Black I heard heatwaves on the speakers at a Main Event and immediately texted my friend about it. I have not read the fic yet because everyone says it makes them cry and I don’t want to cry yet.
Quick remark and tips for making a fanfic book look as professional as possible:
4. About pages being upside down when printed:
Idk if it’s my computer, the printer I’m using or Adobe Reader but when I print tested the first booklet of the fic I wanted to bookbinding, all the back side of the pages are upside down.
I LOVE THAT SERIES SO MUCH
AAAA! I LOVE THOSE!! I REALLY WANNA DO THEM TOO!!
THIS
YES! I love that series!
Hell yeah, oh by the way have you seen casserole's animatic of this fanfic? Cuz u really should check it out!
I'm doing this with Passerine! I decided to handwrite it, so it's taking a long time, I currently have 4 of an estimated 22 signatures. I aged the pages with tea as well, I think it's going to turn out really well.
Oh wow! I wish u luck with that! Sounds like an awesome project ^-^
Obviously Passerine by Thcscus is also incredible and I’ve been meaning to make that one into a hardcover so this will be a great tutorial for starting that project!
omg i loved that one!read it so many times
YES I love “Bones in the Ocean” so much, it made me cry so many times but it’s so cute 😭💕
And it’s also so well written, I can only dream to reach that level of writing 😔✨
Seeing that thickness knowing that that's 80k+ has me wondering just how long the 200k+ fanfic I read would be. Probably have to separate it into volumes💀
I have a fanfic I want to do this with but it’s not finished yet, time to watch this over and over again until it’s finished
are you telling me THAT'S how an 80k fanfiction looks in book form??!!?! 600k+ is going to be INTENSE for me to bind huh
I have a few. the My Hero ones are "Type Two Hero", "Quirkless Reject'" and "UA Ranger" this one has been redone so I recommend the revamped version. The mcyt one is "Ascension of the Dragon God". The original is "Never Wake a Sleeping Dragon" and both have more adult themes but the Ascension is the kinder one of the two
Challenge accepted.
that's so nice, keeping the fanfic for eternity
This is amazing. Maybe one day I will have my own bookshelf just full of fanfictions.
I just realized how long the unfinished fic with over 100000 words is
Tommyinnit’s clinic for supervillain’s possibly?
I think I'm going to do this with my own fanfic (Sunflowers and Sand if you're curious) just to see how long my story is! This is so cool
"What fanfictions deserve to be a hardcover book?"
Flowers from 1970. Is this even a question?
hehe i agree. I sobbed reading that- truly amazing story
i think the author is selling it as a book currently. i dont think it was hardcover tho. i think it only ships in the us, sadly.
@@stupidestella Oh gosh dangit!
Here here! Literally changed how I view life and death
@@emilyharkness9685 same 😅
FF1970 broke me tbh 🥲
8:10, you can use an exacto knife or super sharp knife and a ruler to cut the pages instead of a paper trimmer. It just probably won't be completely exact.
Tommyinnit's Clinic for Supervillians and Tommyinnit's Unbeatable Method of Avoiding Sudden Death are both really good! I could go on and on about over 100 fics that I have read and love in the MCYT community but then I would be here for hours so I'm just gonna leave you with those two absolutely iconic fics.
Omg I love those
But seriously, imagine.... years from now, maybe your grandchildren or even great grandchildren are gonna find that book and ask you about it. Oh I'm just thinking of another plot to finish a story I'm working on. Thank you for this. Really appreciate it. I was thinking of making a fantasy love story, but based on my parents Anniversary. I'm planning on turning it to a book and giving it to them as a present.
I just asked my parents if I could do this and they said I could as long as I pay for it. Time to print the entire Phantasm series
I started reading "Bones in the Ocean" and it is a really good one. I cried in chapter 13, it was super sad.
