    A couple of things about Samoyeds that people may not know: one is that all of that fluff left after grooming has been traditionally spun into yarn and used for making yarn things such as hats, mittens, etc. And two, the biscuit coloring you see is actually part of the standard (at least the AKC) and pure white is something that has been a preferential breeding rather than the actual colors of the dog. It's been a while since I've seen a Samoyed with biscuit coloring. Snow is lovely even though he had to reach down deep to get in touch with his inner husky. 😊

      I used to have a Samoyed back in the 90s. And he had a complete white coloring without any bisquit coloring. Even though my mom brushed him a lot, she never made any yarn of his fur. She just threw it away. And he loved being outside all day long during the winter months when it was between -10 and -30° C. He refused to come inside when my mom thought it was too cold for him at -20°C, lmao! She clearly didn't know Samoyeds are arctic dog breeds and thrives in those temperatures. He was such a great dog and so good with kids and so kind to people. I never heard him growl at either people or any animals. He even allowed me to pull on his fur and ears didn'th even do anything to me (I did that when I was a baby). I really miss him and would love to have a Samoyed again.

      Yep - I went by the breed from and to weights for my Norwegian Forest Cat's gender (Wikipedia says a male ranges between 4.5-9 kg (9.9-19.8 lb) ) ... so was thinking that at 7.5 kg he was a perfectly reasonable weight. Nope. Vet explained it depends on the cat's condition ... whether or not you can easily feel the ribs. Jezza was pretty much rib-less and was way chonkier than I realised. His being overweight was probably a big factor in him forming a bladder stone - which could have killed him (it was at his consultation for problems with producing urine that I found all this out). He was already on a good quality grain-free diet, but after the operation, I stopped feeding 50% wet food and 50% kibble (kibble being a big no-no for cats prone to forming struvite bladder crystals) and got him on 3 small super high quality wet food meals per day with an Ash content of 2.6% or lower (the lower, the better). A year on, he is now a fine figure of a cat at around 6.3 kg (14 lb) and pees like a horse :D

      Well from my profile pic you can tell I have one, and in Australia too where you really need to make sure air can get through to his skin. With the brushing what I do is I just do a section a day, so a limb or his head or whatever is needed, so its quick for both me and him, and isn't a chore, just like brushing your teeth, just make it routine. I also use a long tooth Greyhound Comb which works a treat.

      But it is very likely negate that lead this dog to the condition it is in now. Fat overweight dog means standing for what is normal becomes tiring and painful.
      And a coat in this matted condition means grooming for longer time.
      A healthy dog with healthy coat would not had undergo what this dog had to, so yes it is on the owner for this one.
      Not bashing on the owner as there might be untold reason why this dog is not better cared for. But we cannot ignore the fact that the dog is in poor condition that could be minimise with regular upkeeping.

      I agree! I think a lot of people don't realise how physically demanding grooming can be and don't seem to realise that if only groomers who can cope with dogs like Snow should be able to work as groomers, there'd probably only be about 5% as many groomers in practice as there are now.
      Somehow, I don't see that as an improvement.

    • @wge621
      @wge621 8 месяцев назад +10

      @@GrainneDhu it's really helpful! and if anyone thinks that, they should really be watching "it's me or the dog", in which 100% of a dogs problems are with the owner (whether intentional or not), rather than how other people respond to the dog. it's not easy to properly care for a dog, especially ones that are large, show aggression/anxiety, or have long hair, but it is doable and a necessity if that's what you signed up for.

    • @GrainneDhu
      @GrainneDhu 8 месяцев назад +9

      @@wge621Absolutely!
      I owned 14 medium sized (45 to 70 pound), double or long coated dogs for the 40 best years of my life. Three of them were AKC champions, several others had championship points but never finished due to life getting in the way, all but one had performance titles (the one who didn't was blind), so I had plenty of experience with caring for dog coats. Heck, I was way better at doing my dogs' hair than I ever was with my own!
      I firmly believe that anyone who gets a dog should be certain they can take care of that dog's routine coat care before they decide to bring that dog into their household. If you have a coated dog, be sure that you're going to learn how to line brush so that you get all the way down to the skin and be committed enough to do it at least 3x a week.
      If you whip a comb through the easily matted areas, like behind the ears and the furnishings, once a day and line brush 3x a week, your coated dog will never suffer from compacted coat the way poor Snow did. And it won't take that long, either, since the coat never gets a chance to get into horrid condition.
      If the owners are nervous about trimming out feet or ears or don't have the right set up to give a bath, just doing that routine coat care means that regular grooming appointments won't take that long and will be affordable. And the dog won't suffer during them because it won't demand more physical effort from the dog than the dog can tolerate.

    • @wge621
      @wge621 8 месяцев назад +6

      @@GrainneDhu wow! that's impressive. yes I think a daily brush is really not too much to ask, and goes such a long way for any dog, both in getting them used to being handled in that way, and of course for the matting. it's quite sad how many owners just buy a dog that's difficult to maintain because it's cute. it's hard work! I so appreciate owners who put in the effort

    • @GrainneDhu
      @GrainneDhu 8 месяцев назад +8

      @@wge621 It also pays off as they get older because the brushing turns into daily massages, which helps with the aches and pains of old age. I had a theory that if I kept my older dogs happy enough, they would be too happy to die. It never quite worked out but my dogs did live to be 15 and 16 years old (even the German Shepherds) and my cats into their 20s.
      I have to say, though, that breeding for conformation really maximises the dog's chance of living into extreme old age without arthritis, the major cause of pain in old dogs. Less backyard breeding and more ethical breeding would mean more dogs that live to be active, healthy, pain free dogs who live to extreme old age.
      Which is good, at least to me, because somehow, I loved them more with each year we spent together.

He was a lovely dog, a real joy to own, except for the billowing clouds of white undercoat that he shed twice each year (and more moderately, though continuously) between those major seasonal sheds. My floors, furniture and clothing were perpetually coated with white dog hair no matter how often I groomed him or cleaned the house. After Pete’s time with us had passed, I deliberately avoided adopting more dogs with similar coats and shedding patterns. I had hit my limit for what felt like 24/7 vacuuming.

It's the Bichon side that makes him double-coated (well given he's a mix, I'm not entirely sure whether he is or not. I just know that Bichons are). But she shaves all our dogs every summer or when they get mats. Our Maltese is prone to mats and fleas so he's usually shaved "naked". We also live in the tropics. They often let us know when it's time for a hair cut (inability to lay still, peeing in the house, etc.). None of our dogs are outside long. They have free access to our backyard which is fenced in with a dog door.

      If You need to spend 4-6 hours on one client, I think it's pretty fair to charge for that. I live in a country where I got a fairly specific technique done for like 50$ which took 4 hours, but it was in a small town too, where basic stuff goes for like 30$, and my country is, while expensive for our standards, on a different level to USA. Plus I've been going to the same hairstylist for half of my life, and so does my mom, so we're kind of loyal clients, even though neither of us would refuse to pay a bit more. The prices for basic 1.5-2h service in the capital here varies from 70-140$ depending on your hair length and is much pricier for more advanced techniques. That stuff requires skill and time. What people see on youtube are literally 6-8 hour transformations stuffed and edited to 15-30min. so i suppose it all gets distorted in people's brains that's they can go from dark brown to platinum blond in that amount on time, plus most of the time it's done in collaboration where both parties get something out of it, and usually by big names on the platform and if not, they have the funds to do that stuff in a day, and majority of the populatation forgets about it. It's all very easy untill you try to do it yourself.

    It is so much easier to monitor your pet’s weight when they have a short coat and aren’t so fluffy. And like my own weight it can sneak up on you.

      Definitely agree, and want to add that fluff camouflages weight loss, too.
      I had two purebred Maine Coons who originally came from a sketchy (and subsequently closed) breeder, and they both developed health problems where they lost a lot of weight without me registering it - the first one due to stomach cancer, and the second due to diabetes.
      Both times, it snuck up on me, because they were such fluffy little dudes that it wasn’t visually apparent.

      That’s what I worry about with our Great Pyrenees pup. At months old, she’s eating 5 cups of puppy food a day. But we exercise her a ton all day too. I find myself checking her ribs through her fur a couple of times a week. I plan to as ask our vet what a good meal plan is when we go next week.

      @@melindajohnson9726 at least while she’s small it’s relatively easy to weigh her by picking her up and getting on the scale urself, but that’d be impossible once she’s bigger 😳

    My great aunts dog got a entire new lease of life when she went to a new family and dropped like half her bodyweight through eating dogfood and going on walks. basically being a regular dog. She loved the walks and her new dog brother and was active and happy like a young dog for many more years. She even got a few tummy tucks when she mammary tumors and the vet had plenty of room to sew her up after removal with all that extra skin. Keeping your pets at a healthy weight makes them feel good and happy.

    I appreciate that you did not shame the owners nor other groomers. I bet the owners were so frustrated at not being able to find someone who could help, AND I bet local groomers who tried to help wound up very upset, too. So glad you could help them, and maybe Snow can return at a later date for further de-matting. Awesome work!!!

      @@5117danielleI had this long train of thought, whereby people will still demote Snow's owners for being unable/unwilling to put their dog into a strict diet regimen, that may or may not include exercising (because, you know, engaging with a separate dog training coach is hard on both the heart and on the wallet).
      Then afterwards people will _still_ demote/demean the owners again if they had to give up Snow to another willing owner.
      Along the way, some people will threaten the owners with their lives.
      I'm not in a good mood today, and I usually have a penchant to see humanity and the future of the world in grim, dark and depressing colours. Maybe I will invest in a coal power plant company more, to spite everyone to death.

      @@5117danielle I'm sure they've tried, the trouble is that really thick and dense coat is difficult to get all the way through, especially if you don't have professional grooming tools. He was also getting quite snappy during parts of the groom which would be extremely intimidating for someone who isn't a professional, plus they could be worried about noise complaints with all the barking - there are definitely places where that can have a really negative impact on your living situation if you're renting. It didn't look like he wasn't well-cared for, it's just that his ligament injury made regular grooming vastly more difficult than it probably used to be.

    • @nckojita

      @@5117danielle the issue is that not all dogs can be brushed by their owner, esp when the dog is old and arthritic like this. most ppl dont have professional grooming tools like vanessa which made this much easier. plus this is the kind of dog that genuinely needs regular professional grooming even with brushing tbh, all the ppl ik who do it themselves spend like 3-5 hours doing it every few weeks which not everybody can do for obvious reasons… then if they couldnt get him into a professional they’re shit outta luck sadly

    As someone with spinal degeneration and arthritis (related to scoliosis and spinal surgeries), I very much empathize with this dog during this process. He must have been miserable. And yes, sometimes walking is definitely easier than standing in one place. And fresh air and sunshine makes everything a little more tolerable.
