I saw some at a cat show a couple of years ago. They were really sweet. One couple had two. They were selling some clothing from their store. They had two very sweet kittens with them. One of the kittens had furry ears, legs and tail. The couple were telling people that the kittens loved a lot of attention and getting people to hold and cuddle them.

She was literally hugging your hand when you were clipping her nails, she's such a sweetheart! Also, I have a very sudden newfound appreciation for my ear hairs.

When we picked up our first cat (British shorthair) her ears were also dirty af. My guess is some breeders don't bother as much with maintenance because "once someone buys the cat it'll become their problem"
Things to consider befor getting a hairless cat: they do not only need a lot of help with their hygene, and need sun protection. They also need help keeping warm, means you need to train them accepting cloths so you can have them not freeze, when traveling with them at the very least. In addition they are on the more active and social side of the cat spectrum needing a lot of attention and preferably at least one other cat to keep them occupied. They also need to get their nails clippey routinely to not hurt themselves or each other when playing, as they have no protective fur to prevent scratches. In addition consider the cat breed you pick. The Sphinx inherits the hairlessness on a recessive gene and has because of that severe inbreeding issues, they are often born with glass bones, an athrophic muscle condition, HCM or congenital heart defects. Breeds like the Donskoy or Peterbald inherites the hairlessness as a dominant trait, and while they often get a thin fur coat in winter, and are thus not completely bald all year through, they also inheret less genetic defects, and are not known to have issues with any genetic deseases caused by excessive inbreeding, like the Sphinx does. Additionally: not all countries allow the breeding or sale of hairless cats, as they ban to breed cats that have genes that negatively affect the cats health, and some countries declared hairlessness as such a negative effect.
Thanks! I was wondering if people put them in sweaters. That has to be so freaking cute! Too bad I would still be allergic or I would get one after I retire
She's adorable and so well-behaved during her bath! Exfoliating gloves are great for Sphynx bathing! Easily scrubs off any accumulated grime and the kitties love the scritching. Sphynx earwax looks like melted tootsie rolls. ☮️😺
I am astounded at the amount of gunk you were able to get out of her ears! She must have felt so much better after that. What an adorable and well-behaved kitten.
I doubt that's half a day worth of gunk, honestly. Perhaps the owner doesn't really know how to do it (understandably, they might be scared of hurting her).
@@ThePolypam Pretty sure it probably is... my girl picks up the dust from the cat litter, her nails and ears (and sometimes nose) are black as the oils in her shin mix with the dust from the litter and the house in general. And fluff, as she wants to be snuggled up the whole time. It's absolutely astounding how fast the black gunk builds up.
Prettiest Sphinx cat I've seen on the net thus far - and she actually has a fine coat on her. Such a lovely gray alien with a loving home and a great groomer to give witty commentary. Thank you for your hard work! Tell her owners they're blessed with this lovely gal, if at all possible.
He's not a sphynx, but there's a kitten at my local humane society right now who is absolutely a shoulder cat. He's been there for several months and hasn't been adopted and I have no clue how that's happened, he's so sweet and friendly
I met a Devon Rex (like a sphynx but with very soft curly short fur) kitten at a cat cafe. Within 5 seconds of meeting her, she climbed up to my shoulder, dug her claws into my sweater and refused to let go.
@@casualm0thThankfully he got adopted about a month ago! Which is good news for me because I can barely take care of myself right now, let alone a pet.
Another important thing to know: Sphynx cats are also (very sadly) at high risk for HCM and other cardiac issues. Genetic screening and regular ECHOs are an absolute must with these precious kitties.
Thank you for highlighting this breed. I know so many people who talk about getting a sphinx, thinking they would be low maintenance. Without fur they are very oily - even with weekly baths. Their favorite sleeping spots need regular laundering or they turn into grease slicks. 😬.
My husband wants a sphynx desperately but we also already have a French bulldog and I’m like. No. I do not want another pet that needs more skincare than i do!
@@wormteeth1734 If your husband wants a sphynx that much, make it clear that he will be the *sole* responsible for grooming it and taking care of all its needs, from constant washing to paying for its baths. Let's see how much he'll want it then lol don't let him push this high-maintenance cat onto you!
It is absolutely super important to learn both the pros and cons of a breed (or any pet in general, really) before getting them! I remember while my family still thought dad was allergic to cats (turned out to be serious asthma, not an allergy), we would talk about getting a spinx cause we genuinely thought it was better for someone with allergies. So thankful I looked into it deeper (as well as dad getting checked by a doc) before we ended up with an adorable handful we wouldn't have known how to take care of.
Omg. When you were talking about the easy dirt build up and why you need to bathe them weekly, the little meow in the middle sounded like “yeah!” And I was dead.
I really want one because I love how they look like little aliens and I have read they're very loving. I'm just worried that they may be more in need of constant companionship and I work too much to be there for them all the time.
She’s the prettiest little chaos goblin I’ve ever seen! Sphinx are also incredibly smart! So not only are they time intensive for grooming, you really must play with them or they’re likely to find their own ways of having fun.
I have an almost 3 y.o. male sphynx named Sal, which is short for Salmonella. We unfortunately weren't his parents at the beginning of his life, so we weren't able to start bathing him until we adopted him after he was already 1 year old. We are strictly a hypoallergenic wipe home because he hates water. We also use wipes that are specifically for chicken ears. Just have to say that there's absolutely no way her owner cleaned her ears the day before her groom, IMO.
So glad to see a Sphynx! I own three. A couple little tidbits- the best tool for baths is a softer exfoliating bath glove, and not all Sphynx need weekly bathing. It depends on the individual cat. They do have the best personalities, but come with significant, expensive health care (yearly cardiology visits)!
@ILUVFFANDKH Unfortunately, yes. The breed (like several other purebreds) are particularly prone to HCM. Two out of my three have HCM, and my youngest has a congenital defect in her aorta.
She reminds me so much of my baby Nala (who has passed on). The purring, the snuggling up, the polite attempts to leave the bathtub. Love these little goblins 😭
what a precious little girl oh my GOSH 😭 i cannot handle her little meows, sphinx cats are so darling!! also can we talk about your nails those are SO cute!
I'm so glad you featured her, Vanessa. First of course, I just CAN'T with how cute she is. But second, most importantly, you showed how much care this breed requires at the same time. That was perfect. Also, I love your nails!
I've just bathed and groomed my own sphynx and now I'm watching you do it as well! 😂 Fun fact: when sphynx cats live with hairy cats, they collect their hair in their ears lol. My Cleo hates cleaning her ears, but she knows it makes her feel better, so she grunts and meows but stays still until I finish ❤
We owned a sphynx cat and loved Him dearly. He loved his humans as well and always wanted to be near us. They are curious and so much fun! It is true though, they do need a lot of grooming. While he did not love it, he did tolerate it well and if not groomed regularly, would leave oily spots on the furniture as well as cause him skin issues. Cleaning the ears took the most time but they are so worth the effort. I was not a cat person until we owned our Gizzmo and I would definitely get another. He lived to be 12 and I miss him terribly.
Everytime I see a Sphinx I think about the episode in friends when Rachel gets a Sphinx and ross asks "WHAT is THAT?" Rachel replies "It´s a cat!" Ross makes a paus and says "Why is it inside out?!" Lol! Love the Sphinx, such personalities!
Sphynxes I've met have the most positive (loving, friendly, playful) temperament I've seen from any cat. They have no idea how freakish looking they are, and wouldn't care if they did.
I have a Cornish Rex girl, age 14.5, she is a sphinx with a little bit of curly fur... she is the kindest sweetest cuddliest creature on the planet. But she is oily, ohhh, so oily. Gosh I love this baby girl, she's adorable!
I’m a pet sitter & one of my clients has a Devon Rex. She’s so freaking cute I could spend all day loving on her. She also has curlyish short hair & spends most of her time sleeping behind the decorative pillows on the owner’s bed. She’s in a self made cave which keeps her warm.
That was an unreal amount of gunk and wax that came out of her ears hahaha holy cow! What a precious lil baby though. I've grown to love sphinx cats over the years.. I used to think they were ugly but they're the sweetest things!
My mom still thinks they are ugly 🙄 and is 'scared' of them. Even if she's seen only pictures. 😂 I try so hard to convince her otherwise. I got to hold one, met her in a place I didn't expect at all, and I was extremely thrilled. The surprise added to the wow factor. 😍
I would honestly avoid Sphinx and go for Donskoy. The difference is in how the hairlessness is inhereted, causing the Donskoy to have way less health problems and no risk of being born with glass bones. Another difference is, that the Donskoy gets a thin hair coat in winter, that is shed when it gets warmer again.
@@hannajung7512Not always true. Some Donskoys grow fur, sometimes it sheds and sometimes it doesn't. Their fur pattern can vary widely and can change until they reach adulthood.
I have a sphynx and I knew about the amount of care but I had no idea how *FILTHY THEY GET* , especially under the nails. The gunk I have to dig out from there while my lil gremlin cries like im doing the worst thing in the world (while at the same time sitting fine for it). I was not prepared for how dirty the water would get lol. I go through Q tips like no tomorrow. NO REGRETS THO, she keeps me on my toes and brings me so much love...even if she does knock pictures off of my wall if shes bored X_X
I wait til mine's asleep on my lap, under a snuggly blanket of course, and then I gently scrape the gunk off with my thumbnail. I'm very careful to never touch her cuticle, and she doesn't even notice. I clip her nails at the same time. it's so easy with her, she's a deep sleeper and I take advantage of it! :) xxx
Welsh, Irish, and Polish are 3 languages that have something interesting in common. Knowing how to spell a name or a word, and knowing how to pronounce a name or word, are two VERY DIFFERENT things. Knowing how to do either one is of no help at all when doing the other.
I Googled, and apparently there is some dispute over what the name means. My resource said it meant "my fine rare one", so that's what I'm going with. It's also the first result on Google, so it at least a contender for the correct meaning. 😉
She is adorable. Thanks for letting people know this breed has a lot of maintenance that other cats don’t. People often gets pets because they see them on social media without ever looking into their care. Your videos always are informative. Give those cute babies a hug & kiss from my fur babies Bella & Clara. 🐾🐾😺😺❤️❤️🐾
Watching sphinx cats is a constant reminder that cats are really just alien goblins that use a coat of fur to disguise themselves as adorable little fluffs
My cat started to have those coughing fits, which I solved by having little desk HEPA air filters near where she laid & worked on decreasing dust mites. This also meant whole room/home HEPA filters, changing bedding & wooden surfaces to bamboo &/or polyester where I could, washing/vacuuming often with a HEPA filter & hot water. Peppermint oil added to laundry also helps decrease dust mites. My cat was both asthmatic AND got acne on her whole body from dust mite allergies, so it seems anti-dust mite living is perfect for her!
I read that cats get that chin acne from eating, drinking from plastic dishes, so should be using ceramic, glass..? Older cats may not clean selves as well, & u should wipe their chins,.. & butts, which I do. !!

Aww her purring ❤ What an absolute sweetheart! Very happy to hear her beautiful name Myfanwy - it roughly translates as beloved or my lovely little one. A very popular traditional welsh name 🏴😊 My work colleague used to breed and show hairless siamese cats and she has 6 of them at home. I had never come across them before and they are the friendliest and sweetest cats I have ever met. Having 6 of them purring and cuddling up to you is like having several hot water bottles on you and is so comforting and relaxing. Their skin is like velvet and really soft to stroke. A really beautiful breed and such wonderful personalities! I am not a huge cat person but I adore her cats 😊
It really depends on the cat. I had a long haired black cat, kind of tuxedo, w/ the white bib, paws and moustach. Everyone thought she was so pretty, because she had the sweetest face w/ big round eyes, like a China doll. She was grumpy as heck w/ strangers though. Very much a one owner cat and an introvert. She was super cuddly w/ me, and would growl at pretty much anyone that tried to come near her, as she had no use for attention, even from those that came regularly. Took her over a year to get used to my ex and get attached to him.
@@LisaLesa1993I had a beautiful, affectionate black cat. Now I have a beautiful, affectionate but frankly sometimes mean white cat and they’re supposed to be sweet too. I think generalisations are just that; mostly true but there are exceptions.
Something to think about doing when bathing cats is to put a towel, cloth, or a textured bath mat (like a shower mat but more textured for claw grasping) on the bottom of the bath, so they can grasp hold of the wet cloth or anti-slip mat with their claws. The reason why they're freaking out during the bath is they don't feel secure enough to stand in the bath without slipping. So, their immediate instinct is to jump out of the bath onto a more secure material. Then they feel like they have a better handle on standing, escaping, or hiding on the floor material outside of the bath than in the bath itself. Adding cloth to the bottom of the bath receptacle allows them to grasp hold onto something while in the bathwater, so they don't automatically feel that "I'm going to slip at any moment" feeling that everyone feels in a bathtub that doesn't have a anti-slip mat. Except humans know what's going on, cats really don't and just want to escape the insecure place. When they feel secure, they feel more in control their environment instead of slipping all over the place willy nilly. When I found out about such a simple fix, after my cats had passed away; I was so sad that they were never able to feel secure during bathtime. Though I can always let other people know so their cats can feel more secure during bathtime. The same can be said about carry cats as well. Cats want their feet on the ground, whether that ground is on a person's arm, on a lap, a shoulder, a ledge, a shelf, or a cat tree. Always carry them with your hands under their feet, when you lift them up to place them in another location. That's why they have their claws and legs extended at full range, since they're trying to find secure ground, when they're picked up like you did around 4:40, no matter how high they are, solid footing is always a good thing.
Oh my gosh! Some friends have 2! The adults in the house have cat allergies but with the routine bathing they do well with their girls. They realized they are more "cat people" than "dog people" after vacationing. They are very sweet kitties. I love her tail and unibrow hairs. So ready for a nap after the big bath day. I love your timing with removing her from the wash tub. Great positive reinforcement. She wasn't trying to get out abs realized it was safe. Boom, out you go. Her wrinkles are a great example of what you were talking about with the matted kitty that had escaped and was found. We can't see these wrinkles because of the fur. All cats have them for maneuverability.
If they have a ton of problems with the allergies still, tell them about Allerpet. Both my husband and I have pet allergies (I got just the cat - he got the double whammy of cats AND dogs, poor guy) and Allerpet (and so I don't sound like an infomercial, I have no connection to the product or company. Wish I was, that has to be some SERIOUS money the company rakes in!) has saved us a ton of problems since we have been married (17 years) we've never had less than 3 cats. (Lord help us, we had 7 at one time when we took in my inlaws cats too. I apparently can be suckered into anything that involves little furballs.) We still take an over the counter allergy med but the allerpet takes care of the rest for us (might not work for your friends, but it might be worth the little boost of help for them) and is really easy to just put on a cloth and give them a good rubdown. I've worked in animal shelters even and the main 'pet' shelter (I've also worked in wild animal shelters but this isn't for them, not sure how an owl or a bearcub would react to being rubbed with it and since I rather enjoy have a face, I never gave it a whirl) used it constantly. Best part of that job were getting the cats set up with the stuff (lots of petting and cuddles) and it also helped socialize them and get them calm around humans. And while I do still like dogs and grew up with really large ones.. cats rule every time. Your friends came to the right conclusion in what kinda folks they wanna be! lol
Hobbits are known for their hair: curly brown hair on their head and very hairy feet. Pretty much the only place they don't grow ridiculous amounts of hair is on the face.
My friends ex boyfriend was watching his sisters two Sphynx cats while away & it was the first time I’ve ever seen them in person. I swear, they were like dogs! You couldn’t eat around them & they even tried opening pizza boxes (we were over for a football game.) They also loved sitting on the cable box because they were warm. I’m not cat person but I feel in love with those two rascals!!
Thanks for showing how much high maintenance these cats are! too many people get them for aesthetics without realising that unlike your regular moggy, these guys are a looooot of work, more so than a dog even!
For anyone who wants a sphynx but not the maintenance of a sphynx, get a Devon Rex!!! We have one and his personality is absolutely the BEST and he's incredibly whitty, loving, cuddly, and spunky! We love him so much.

My long haired indoor cat is brushed daily, and we often do sanitary cut around her butthole so she doesn't get infection. Cats also need care indeed.

@@thisisnotausernameXDabsolutely!
It's not really that much. I'd say if people gave all cats as much attention, they' d be as sweet/loving/bonded as theSpynx.
And some OVERestimate it too
I can’t believe she had that much gunk in her ears being brand new! She’s a cutie!
When we picked up our first cat (British shorthair) her ears were also dirty af. My guess is some breeders don't bother as much with maintenance because "once someone buys the cat it'll become their problem"
Goes to show how useful hair is for animals, she has nothing to prevent gunky skin and ears lol
@mist5273
It could be the breed, my brittie also had dirty ears if not cleaned regularly but my other cats don’t.
I wondered if their hairless ness subjected them to sunburn… 🤔 Thanks for the info!
Thanks for this!
Thanks! I was wondering if people put them in sweaters. That has to be so freaking cute! Too bad I would still be allergic or I would get one after I retire
Hold on... I thought you weren't supposed to give a house-elf clothes???
So what
She's adorable and so well-behaved during her bath! Exfoliating gloves are great for Sphynx bathing! Easily scrubs off any accumulated grime and the kitties love the scritching. Sphynx earwax looks like melted tootsie rolls. ☮️😺
That cat was clearly more people motivated than food motivated! So cute

@@carmenclemons2556 I was going to comment pretty much the same thing lol
I am astounded at the amount of gunk you were able to get out of her ears! She must have felt so much better after that. What an adorable and well-behaved kitten.
And the bath water changes color. For a kitten born indoors that was an impressive amount of dirt!
I doubt that's half a day worth of gunk, honestly. Perhaps the owner doesn't really know how to do it (understandably, they might be scared of hurting her).
It was kinda gross that she kept using the same cotton bud again after it was filthy 😳😳 I would use a new clean one once I got enough out of the ear
@@ThePolypam Pretty sure it probably is... my girl picks up the dust from the cat litter, her nails and ears (and sometimes nose) are black as the oils in her shin mix with the dust from the litter and the house in general.

They have amazing outgoing personalities. I once met a litter of Sphynx kittens, and it was like a bunch of tiny, hairless talk show hosts. 😂

Oh man, what a delightful little rotisserie chicken. So lovely when she was purring up a storm while getting her nails clipped.
I use a tanning mit because of how soft it is. It gets all the grime and is not harsh on my sphynx's skin :)

You're an awesome cat/pet parent! Hopefully hers see this comment or find these tips online like you did so they can help lil miss thrive at home :)

@@ThePjl110Heads up for anyone with a pet who needs an inhaler (and frankly for humans too): I’m a Respiratory Therapist and everyone (cats, humans, horses etc.) who uses an inhaler should be using a spacer with it. That may be your experience but it's not true. I've met some MEAN cats & one was a black cat.
@@LisaLesa1993no, I'd say they are correct
My black cat was utterly splendid.
Your friends came to the right conclusion in what kinda folks they wanna be! lol
