My Routan uses the same kind of drain plug. After taking it many times to quick lube places and having an oil leak, I discovered that the gasket was shredded due to constant overtightening, and the shops would just compensate by putting it back on tighter each time. Destroyed a socket trying to get it off when I finally did my own oil change. Now I almost always do oil changes myself.
Look I do a bit of vehicle maintenance as a hobby, been doing my own servicing for years, now I service most of my familes vehicles just the basic like oil changes filter replacement spark plugs etc etc. Now we all make mistakes but putting in the wrong drain plug and forgetting the seal is just as dumb as it comes.
We agree. It is also just plain lazy. I have also heard that these guys changing the oil have a lot of pressure from the store managers to get these cars out ASAP.
@@premierautomotivediagnosti9432 yes here at local dealerships in Australia it happens too, I worked in car rentals for 7 years, saw some bad habits and short cuts like a oil change in 15 minutes to bad repairs you name it. Now I do not have the luxury of a lift but it takes me more than 15 minutes to do a oil change properly and check for any other issues under a vehicle at the same time. If you slow down, take a bit little bit of extra time and do the job correctly the first time saves headaches in the long term, I feels sorry for some customers thinking they are getting a good service. Not aming at anyone just in today's world its go go go and everything is so rushed these days.
As a technician, it constantly baffles me how many incompetent chuckleheads get access to your car. I guess half a century spent vilifying trade skills and honest jobs did its thing. Now people are surprised why there are no skilled workers.
Had a F-150 come in for an oil service. When I tried to install back the drain plug, the oil pan was stripped and had no end tightening. Car was serviced previously at Jiffy Lube, likely the thread wasn’t started right and someone used a wrench to tighten and tighten stripping the threads. Had to install a helicoil to repair the pan.
I know you dont like quick lube shops but i was a pit guy and i was good but if i see a stripped out drain plug i would have matched it because we had this handy dandy tool to match the threading and then all it is matching the head when i came into situations like yours id just call and order a new one wasnt much for guessing and yes it was an inconvenience for the customer and would hold a bay up which isnt good at a quick lube shop but if it kept the customer happy thats all that matters and i know most people in a quick lube shop dont think like me but thats why i had repeat customers
@@InsaneHaloMaster that’s kinda a waste of plugs, unless you reuse them and cycle them through every change after 10. Really the only thing you need to change is the gasket/washer on the plug. Especially a waste if they’re magnetic plugs. Those are super useful.
No sir, those have a 13mm drain plug. Alot of techs struggle with the "angle" (more on the Jeep Grand Cherokee's though) of the wrench position to loosen the drain plug. They dont want to grab a socket and rachet, so they use the 13mm 12POINT wrench off the rack and proceed to STRIP out the plug lol. Stopped the video at 1:11, to enter this comment before i went further.. first initial thought. I run a repair shop in Stockbridge, GA. After watching full video, im sure the OEM drain plug was stripped on the head of the bolt from a lazy/inexperienced technician. Then, you get the same tech or later down the road a tech who doesnt understand drain plugs.. he slaps in something that "threads" in and calls it good! Hate to see this.
We have an Ep 3 video coming out soon. You are very accurate. These cheap oil service prices easily end up costing the vehicle owner hundreds if not thousands for repairs.
Premier Automotive Diagnostics They have bulk oil containers , who knows what there putting in your car and those cheep no name oil filters . You are just asking for trouble ! I flew to Illinois two years ago to buy a somewhat classic, drove it back out west to find out it had the ( WRONG ) oil filter done by a quickey oil change place ! I’m lucky there was no damage !

Lube shops SUCK. hire young teens who know shit. they are trained to screw people..

I buy my oil drain plugs in packs of 10 I change the drain plug every change
