    It does kinda get to a point where when you've tried so many meds and therapies you just wonder if you'll ever get better... (I have ADHD, anxiety, depression and possibly dysthymia, have tried countless meds, therapy and still struggling). It's good to hear other guys opening up about it, feeling less alone.. I think exercise is the best help it's just when it gets to the point where you're so depressed you can't even move that flies out the window

    Jessica McCabe says this very same thing.
    CBT alone has some benefit, Medication alone has some (more than "some" actually) benefit, but the best progress is made by those who receive "both".

    Hey! Have just discovered your channel. I have OCD and ADHD and just experimenting with meds for the ADHD. Anyway, I wondered if you drink and how much. Sorry if you've covered this in another video. I slipped into drinking in my 30s, mainly, I now see, to medicate the ADHD which was undiagnosed. Also in my 30s I began to experience really terrible episodes of depression and OCD thoughts, which could last a week or two. I saw several therapists and none of them thought my alcohol intake was that high. During the lockdown I stopped drinking and the episodes also stopped. The next one I had was triggered by stress and - drinking. So, my theory is that I was drinking late in the evenings to relax and then to sleep, and my already bad ADHD sleep was made even worse by alcohol. So - this was at least part of what triggered the episodes. Of course giving up drinking if you don't need to also has downsides in terms of socialising and so on. For me - I needed to for sure and am better off for it.

    CBT really helped me to be honest with how I was feeling, and thus acknowledging when I was feeling jealous envious, angry and happy. I say happy because I learned I has having a hard time sitting with my joy and instead I was questioning it. This was key, because I was having a hard time loving myself, well how could you love someone, who pushes the feeling of joy away from you? I don’t know when, but over time, I felt happier and content. Depression, anxiety and anger are all human emotions it’s a important gage to our well being, it was CBT that helped me develop compassion for myself when I went through a mild depression, it scarred me, and I knew I needed professional help, because I strongly feel I should not have to be at rock bottom in order to deserve help. That compassion has led me to amazing professionals and even tho I’m currently in the middle of it all. I really feel good that the foundation I built for myself through CBT is there.
    So in short I’m on the opposite side as you at the moment, I did CBT first for years. There is science behind it, that’s why I trusted it to begin with, and it turned out to be a good direction to steer my boat in.

    Hey Bud, sorry to hear you´re struggling. I´ve also been through 2 years of cbt and different medications. Meds have definately helped, especially with the more acute stuff. I had to just cry uncontrolably and i always thought, well if i could just stop that i´d know how to make myself feel good in a sense. So the bar wasn´t to high for the meds to be working for me. Otherwise i just also meditate and exercise daily and use the sauna multiple times a week. You can be sure that will do something to feel more positive emotions. And meditation isn´t so much about seeing your thought and grasping and putting meaning into them, because they´re really somewhat random anyway. It´s more of a recognition of how your mind already is. - I´d recomend you try sam harris app "waking up" sound more woo than it is. It´s actually really structured and if you´re to broke to afford you can get a year for free. - Back to my story. What i learned during therapy was that i was always looking for something special or some understanding that would finally get me out of this state. In sense i was looking at the wrong place and avoiding looking at what was happening in my life. So my focus really started shifting more in a direction of "how can i get more control of what´s happening in my life" rather than trying to fight my depression. By trying to fight my depression i was sort of chasing my own tail. I started going back to school and then applying for uni, i started a family and went after my hobbies. such as meditation, working out and music. I´m actively trying to create a sense of belonging, control over my life and where i´m going, finding pleasure (i.e meditation exersice and music), and that would in return give me confidence and i could believe in myself. But i still take my meds, and i also just started taking vyvanse. Mental illness is a real thing but having all of those other aspects in line helped me not be the only thing i worry about and identify with. Ok i´ll stop here .     CBT is oftentimes (at least in the US) required when prescribed with ADHD and/or depression medications. Due to the pandemic, virtual CBT sessions make it difficult to share everything I am feeling.cant wait until I can get back to in-person appointments after pandemic.

      Yeah mine are going to be over Skype or a phone call - I’m sure it’s not as effective as in person but it’s definitely better than nothing

      @@ollieedward643 at least for my insurance the co-pays are waived for virtual sessions.

    Hi Ollie 👋 i think the CBT will really help you- I’m surprised that this wasn’t suggested before starting any anti-depressant medication. I’m shocked but not surprised with the response from the first GP you saw, some are so dismissive of mental health issues others however are really good. From my experience a lot of people who have ADHD don’t find anti-depressants very useful but now that you have the Elvanse I think this together with the CBT will do you wonders!

      Hey Ben! So, it was suggested and I tried to access my local well-being service but it was the least user friendly service I have ever known! (Which is especially frustrating considering it’s purpose). I agree - I’m really hopeful that CBT combined with medication to help my adhd should be a good combo

      @@ollieedward643 I think things have improved a bit now from a few years ago! Majority of people I’ve referred into CBT find it useful. Get in touch for a chat if that helps.

      @@ollieedward643 I have heard most of the typical responses ie “I’m glad you found religion and if it works for you then great but not for me” etc but I just want you to know Ollie Jesus Christ lives. I would have laughed 10 year ago but I’m now a fairly dedicated catholic Christian. I do have adhd & have had mental health issues in the past including an acute psychotic episode about 9 years ago. I live alone with a dog in my flat in the south of the UK & have become fairly solitary as I have gotten older. I don’t really have many friends to tell the truth but it’s not because I couldn’t make them if I tried it’s just how things have turned out so far. Finding God in my experience was not an instant thing it took many years of on off active seeking but I know he’s there for the “poor in spirit” & “broken-hearted”. I’m told to do to others as I’d like done to me so I thought I’d send you a message to say there is a hope In this life and it’s found in a relationship with your maker. There are plenty of rational reasons to not believe and there are plenty of rational reasons to believe! Choice is yours my friend but I promise you the reward of faith is a lifesaver! (Literally).
