Noice Cancelling Headphones helped me a lot with shopping, noisy public transportation and so on. I'm less stressed out in the evening when I've put them on.
I wear headphones everywhere that I can too, or have background music on when I can. It really helps me concentrate by blocking out anything else. Headphones are banned in my office and I really struggle with focus when you can hear 20 people tapping keyboards and having conversations! I just bought some Calmer ear plugs to try, hopefully they might take the edge off when I can't listen to music.
I have moderate to severe symptoms of ADHD. I’m also a middle school English teacher at an American public school. Imagine being trapped inside a small room for 8 hours a day every day trying to manage the behaviors of 30 fourteen year olds (per class period). I’ve been struggling so much from sensory overload and I just can’t manage anymore. Teaching is the wrong job for ppl who have this problem.
Just been recently diagnosed and I too have just come to the conclusion that I suffer from sensory overload at times. Definitely one to zone out when this happens. Especially at work. Thanks for this! Will be looking at your other videos as I’m going to try medication next week.
I find that in crowded environments like restaurants or bars (unless drunk) I go into myself so much, always felt like social anxiety by even when I’m not anxious, like there’s just too much going on and I end up listening to other conversations whilst trying to listen to someone else etc. How’s your meds been going? I’ve been on vyvanse about 2months now
I can definitely relate to that, it’s really frustrating! Meds have been okay thank you, no real changes - I took a med holiday about 5 weeks ago now though because I felt as though I was taking them for granted slightly and over-relying on them. How are you finding Vyvanse?
Yes! Recently discovered this myself. Does anyone else have real problems with being super jumpy too? Everything makes me jump and I think it's like you said in the video, I'm hyperfocusing and completely shut off/unaware and them BAM massive audio/visual input and I immediately go into heart attack levels of adrenaline and reach low orbit with my convulsions 😅. My biggest sensory triggers are - Crowds - Being bumped/jostled, lots of conversations going on around me and suddenly hearing them all at once in a rush. Loud noises - Sudden bangs like doors slamming or things being dropped, dogs barking. Fluorescent lighting - Usually supermarkets or offices, makes me feel nauseous for some reason. Some odours are really overpowering, stale cigarettes for example. Touch - Clothing - Tags....gah!, certain fabrics are super itchy and feel like a constant sensory input that I can't ignore. On the other hand, some things I feel like I enjoy way more than other people. Stroking animal fur or really smooth fabrics is bliss. Temperature - I get hot or cold really easily and it dominates my thoughts to the point where I can't concentrate and get really irritable. I think the audio overwhelm is one of the reasons I struggle following conversations, I find it difficult to filter out what people are saying and tend to look at peoples lips instead of their eyes because I'm lip reading to compensate a little. My hearing is fine, really good for my age actually but I can't ignore sounds that are happening in the background. My anxiety therapist is getting me to do a daily Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) exercise called Attention Training Technique (ATT) to train my attention in conversations. They play 4 sounds at the same time and you have to focus on one sound at a time, which is difficult for me. It's supposed to help anxiety and depression too. Here's the video that I'm using currently - ruclips.net/video/kbTkwMJExCc/видео.html
Thanks so much for this - I can relate to so much of what you’re saying here! I do the same thing in conversations where you look at the persons lips instead of eyes - I even had my hearing checked last week to make sure that wasn’t the issue! When they told me my hearing was brilliant, I was actually a bit upset because I was then like ‘well what’s wrong with me then??’ 🤦♂️
@@ollieedward643 Yeah that's it, I can hear all the right frequencies but I'm either getting distracted by thoughts or it's just getting lost in the background noise I guess. Either way I'm constantly having to ask people to repeat themselves 😂
Same here with confrontational conversations, specially with my partner . She talks a way too much to me , i just want to know what is the point , the demand , i get so stressed with my brain full of useless sentences that dont help at all and dont go straight away to the point to make ne understand what the conclusion is , what is the need that is not being attended but its useless... too much talk irritates me a lot , i feel we re waisting the time , that is something i appreciate a lot because it melts in my hands because of adhd and i just want to leave and its awful ... she feels i dont want to listen to her but i just need her to get to the point to make me understand what she needs me to fix instead of going arround past issues and stuff i dont even rember ... so difficult sometimes :(
If I wear wearplugs in the pub, I can actually hear the people I'm talking with clearly. They sound quieter (obviously) but I'm able to separate their voices from all the background noise.
Im learning about my high levels of empathy and wanted to go about it in a scientific way so i stopped at your video because I was researching the bodies nervous system and your explanation atleast on my end sounds like me 100 percent especially when overwhelmed how you close up..thankyou you for your viewpoint on this it has helped a whole lot...and i actually am trying to embrace this because I chose to find a way to cope with this instead of meds ( and i dont hate on meds ive just never found the right one and decided that this is how I am and wanted to embrace it) and i just wanted to ask you because of how you speak and use your words is do you feel you have high levels of empathy ? The way you express yourself you seem very caring.... Thanks again on another POV !

100% - I rely on mine so much in those environments 👍

How did you deal with sensory overload when learning to drive?
Good question! I'll be honest, it was really tough.. I didnt have anything in place to help me at that time, and i remember it being very difficult.

Black Friday is the WORST time of the year to go shopping; I thank GOD that my workplace DOES NOT do Black Friday.
How do your meds help with this?
They help me focus so I can better prioritise the information my brain is taking in. Although, it’s still a big problem, even with meds!
@@ollieedward643do the meds help or reduce sensory overload?
