    Here's what will happen. Sells the sub, gets Explorer. Gets another sub, sells explorer. Buys a reduced Speedmaster.

      The maxi-case sub is far uglier than the 36mm Explorer. It's a real shame Rolex did what they did.
      If I were getting a new Rolex dive watch, it would be the Sea Dweller 4000. It has those classic proportions which made the Submariner an icon.

    TGV,
    If my memory serves me, you purchased the Submariner as a 30th birthday gift to yourself (a big milestone). You have traveled and built important memories with it on your wrist. If you want the explorer, trim the fat elsewhere and focus on a higher end, more meaningful collection. Keep up the great work!

    The sub is both fantastic and iconic but, I'm willing to bet that it doesn't give you the same level of enjoyment as your blue squale. You went as far as to say that that watch made you happy to be alive. I think all the watches in your collection should give you that feeling.

    TGV,
    I love the fact that the Squale remains in the collection despite being considered inexpensive in comparison to other pieces you have owned and since sold. A beautiful example of treasuring a watch for how it makes you feel, not the level of satisfaction it gives others around you. The true value of a piece is not determined by the price tag it carries. You're a true gentleman and an inspiration, keep it up mate.
    Kind Regards,

    Totally agree TGV. The Gut string classical has a very organic sound to it. And when played by itself becomes so warm and inviting to the senses. And that my friend is exactly why I am a classically trained classical guitarist. It speaks to me on so many levels. Keep up the excellent work on your chanel. I think the derection you have taken with your collection is proper. Don't try to be something you are not. I totally understand that I'm a sports watch guy. So that's what I collect and enjoy. I literally only have one quote dress watch. There's something classy in my opinion being big enough in your life and in your mind to admit where your heart lays as far as where the direction you take your collection and not what everyone else expects or tells you the direction you should take your collection. Cheers

    One of the nice things about the SKX is its cushion case form and the texture of the bezel which is lost when you make it all black and lose the reflectivity which mirror polishing gives.

    Great to see an update on the collection TGV, surprised to see the "Schumy" Speedmaster gone but can see your reasons behind it, love the Charles Frodsham pocket watch, Sekio SKX Mod, Sinn, Navi Timer and the GMT. I would go for the Explorer because the GMT looks the part and the Sinn is great as well, also the Sub is too common where as the Explorer is not, still a bit of a hard choice with the Sub being a 30th birthday present and a long term aim at the time, heart over head or head over heart?, great channel keep the videos coming.

    Very impressive collection TGV. Personally, I wouldn't sell the submariner, it's far more iconic than the explorer and I think you would greatly regret it. Yes, the explorer is cooler as a dress watch as Jon Hamm wore it in Mad Men but the submariner is so much more iconic as it was Connery's Bond watch and it is a grail watch for almost every watch collector out there.

  • @ChrisCarries_EDC
    @ChrisCarries_EDC 7 лет назад

    You've said in many videos that you have so many memories with the Subby: for me, that makes it a standout watch in your collection. I think you'd regret it!
    Also I don't think there's anything wrong with having lots of watches in your collection as long as you see yourself wearing every one of them at some point. You can fall in and out of love with watches over time, so a watch that you are considering getting rid of now may actually become one of your favourites a few months down the line.

    Maybe the squale should go? You have a navi with the great blue dial and the Rolex submariner has more sentimental value to you ( I assume) because it was a gift to yourself and you brought to so many places. But great video. Keep up the good work.

    Hi TGV,
    The Sub is definitely an icon. But I would swap it for an Explorer within a heard beat! ;) For me it is the more versatile watch. And with your GMT you still got a similar watch. The only reason you shouldn't sell your Sub are the memories. You told us so often that the Sub reminds you of many journeys and special moments of your life. At the end it is going to be a tough decision you have to make.
    Best regards,

    Great update. I'm shocked you sold the Schumi. A speedy is definitely high on my list because it covers many bases so I can keep the numbers down. I can definitely see you have a lot of chrono's, so I do get the thinking.
    Also, I adore the Pepsi GMT on the Jubilee. When you had your live video and chatted about the 'dream Rolex', I was thinking that I would have a Pepsi GMT on a Jubilee with a display case back.

  • @JohnClarkW
    @JohnClarkW 7 лет назад

    I was impressed at how many of those weren't even in the collection 6 months ago. I tend to hold onto watches until they end up gifted to people who admire them. TGV, I was shocked that you let your wife have the SARB. That is true love, given how much you like that watch. I coughed when you said "far too many Seikos". That is certainly a value greater than two.
    On the topic of Seikos, I think you could have a legitimate collection and good range with just 4 of them. The SNK80x, a SKX, a flighty, and a SARB, would be a very affordable and quality set of watches.

      Don't know if the Sub is more ICONIC than just BOOOOORIIIING. Boring watch, for boring people.

    • @horacioar3277
      @horacioar3277 7 лет назад +1

      Ok, so what watch do you consider is not boring?

    • @meeshoo5881
      @meeshoo5881 7 лет назад +4

      The Navi, the Bulova, the Sinn, the Seiko Giugiaro, the Tissot. None of them boring. Sub: Boooriiiing. I'm yawning while writing "boring". That's how boring the design is. Of course, these are my opinions. In my personal opinion, it's boring. I keep using the personal opinion term, because some people are offended with other people's opinions, without realising they are just subjective OPINIONS, based on personal prefferences. But basically, I have the right to say this: The sub is the most boring watch design ever designed.

    • @horacioar3277
      @horacioar3277 7 лет назад

      A proof that your are not right about stating that the design of the submariner is boring is that the Rolex submariner is the most copied and replicated watch design in the world. That said... ARE WE ALL WRONG?

    • @meeshoo5881
      @meeshoo5881 7 лет назад +3

      This is exactly why it's boring, because everyone has it. It's like all people owning the same car. Eventually, that would become the most boring car.

  • @HowieDuwitt

    I'm a big fan of your RUclips channel and I highly respect your views on watches. The fact that you can get just as excited about a $50 Timex as you get about one of your rolex or omegas means you are a true watch lover and not just a critic.
    My personal taste doesn't very as much as yours yet as I am more of a "field watch" guy for now anyway. I find the day/date complications most appealing as I find I need to check what day of the week it is as often as what time of day it is.
    I've become quite fond of the Hamilton field watches from both your respect for them and from their respectable pricing. You've reviewed the Hamilton "Khaki King Auto" and I think it would be a great choice for me as I'm also a fan of Hugh Laurie but I can't seems to get over the day/date over top of the 12 position. I've been looking around and found that they have a day/date which looks more appealing called the "Field Day Date H70505133."
    Here's my question: Would you think it's worth me spending a couple hundred dollars more just to get the day and date in a more appealing place? Would you respect the khaki king more than the more pricey version? The size difference isn't really an issue for me.

    I have two watch collections, my real one and one I keep on Pinterest. I'm still building my real one but use the virtual one to record the real watches I own, and the sensible set I'm building towards. It is also good to see how the real collection will hang together as it grows. I use the same rules for the virtual collection, ten watches max, and get a bit of a kick when watches go in and out of it. I'm sure my real collection will change over time as budget, taste, life changes etc, but I love building the collection virtually to help my real watch purchases.
    Love the channel, it's responsible for at least two watches in my virtual collection, Stowa flieger and Sinn 856 UTC! if you could review the zodiac super sea wolf 68 you'd cover all the big ticket watches I need :)

    Obviously none of my business, but can't help but feel you're a bit too connected to the Submariner to not regret it terribly afterwards.
    As for the Explorer, didn't you have a Tudor Prince which looked very similar? Did you wear that one much? Might help avoid a potential howler!!

    Simply adore your collection, as i build mine id love to get a daytona in there as a (white-faced for historical purposes, but i love love the black face) racing inspired and chrono piece, along with a speedy , a gmt as an aviation piece with perhaps an iwc, and some seikos like the balck one for sure, where can i find a black pvd skx like yours?

    To keep the collection slim, add a diver that can do nighttime duty as a dress watch: the classic Longines Legend Diver with the internal rotating bezel.

    Why is Squale hated by so many people? is it mainly because their watches are homages (or replicas) to the Sub?

      Tonuzzo Nicklefritz maybe you can call them homages, but not to the sub.

    Great review. Based on your wrist size are you thinking about the classic sized Explorer at 36mm or the redesign that comes with a better bracelet? Same for the skx. Do you prefer the 41mm or your smaller version?

      I love Certina, especially their vintage watches. They actually have a very interesting history.I came so close to pulling the trigger on one many times on eBay.
      It will happen eventfully. How do you feel about them?

      I would be really glad and intrested if you featured them on your channel.
      I really like them especially their diving watches new and vintage. The Certina DS Action Diver was my first real watch and I can really recommend it even though it probably is a bit big in your taste at 43mm.
      You should make a google search on: Certina Super PH and look at their vintage divers really really intresting.
      Thank you for the answer. :)

    a collection this big with such a broad range of entry/mid/luxury is almost a shame without a Speedmaster and/or Seamaster. Speedies are legendary and Seamasters are turning into a modern icon.

    I decided that once I worked for years to get myself entirely out of debt for the first time in my adult life I would reward myself by buying a nice watch, so I did (well, nice for me at the time). I ended up selling it a few years later and now the trophy of that milestone is gone and can't be replaced. I hugely hugely hugely regret it. It's your collection and 100% your decision of course, but if you sell the sub I think you may regret it down the line. Cheers.

    Beautiful collection so far Tristano. I wouldn't suggest to replace the Sub with the explorer because the Explorer hasn't the story of the Sub. Rolex insist to say it climbed the Everest witch is true but not the explorer model and Rolex hasn't been the first. In my humble opinion, because you like the pilot watches you should own a Pilot IWC eventually.

    You could consider selling the Timex, Flightmaster, and Tudor and get a sporty dress watch with a moonphase to replace all 3? Something like a Zenith el primero with a moonphase might tick all the boxes. Not sure how much wrist time they get or how attached you are to them though.

    TGV,
    You have a perfect collection! I am quite surprised you let go of "Schumy" :( That was a stunning piece.
    I offloaded an Omega Seamaster 2254, a TAG F1, and a Tissot Sea-Touch in 2016 to make room for a more concise collection. The hardest one to let go of was the 2254. I had quite the attachment to it so I may add one in the near-term.
    My main near-term goal is a Seiko SRP773 "Turtle" which I am excited to purchase. It is 44mm, which is large, but works with my wrist. The movement is solid and a great investment in my opinion. I have recently purchased a number of NATO straps that I think would look great on a turtle.
    My medium-term goal is a Speedmaster Moon Watch (any reference, just as long as it is a moon watch!). I have decided to curb my expectations and save for the next 12-14 months instead of blowing what I have and risk something coming up.
    My forever goal, similar to yours, is a Lange 1. I may be waiting 20 years, but I too, shall have a Lange at some point in my life haha!
    Thanks for sharing your collection. I hope you go back to Omega this year :)
    Cheers,
    Nathan

      The 2254 is a stunner, I don't blame you finding that one difficult.
      I have heard nothing but great things about the turtle, great choice.
      Wise plan there too, and I am totally with you about Lange, eventually right!?!
      Happy hunting and good luck my friend, great comment.

    You can use a piece of red hot metal instead of an open flame to melt the end of the strap when cutting light colored perlon straps to size. If you quickly wipe the soot from the metal with a piece of cloth before you start melting the perlon it won't discolor that much.

    Fantastic video, I must admit I've been looking forward to your "SOTC" update. Glad to see some of my favorites are still there (like the Giugiaro).. Funny enough I was at a bistrot some months back, and a tall beautiful brunette with hazel eyes came to take our order. And she in fact was wearing what I recognized as a A150WA.... I commented on her iconic casio and she smiled brightly, said it helps her get to work and class on time. She paid only $15 for it! (true story)

    I love the Modded Seiko SKX007, Casio Databank, the Classic Timex, Bulova Accutron Spaceview, and of course, the Charles Frodsham pocket watch. Amazing collection, TGV. I only have a Seiko Ranger, a classic watch of my dad back in the 70s. But seeing your collection, encourages me to one day acquire such for my own.
    P.S. Will you have a giveaway sometime? 😄
