I love your flightmaster on that gorgeous, marvelous yellow perlon strap. My favorite aviation watch is interstellar Hamilton. In my opinion is the best affordable Flieger watch.

Of all my watches, the Navitimer has, by far, my favorite dial. I get lost in that timepiece as I watch the sun playing off of the different layers, textures, and colors of the dial, hands, indices, etc.. As always, you have a terrific collection representative of every price category, and love the enthusiasm you show for each one. All are unique, and all have a story to tell. Che bella collezione!

What a thoughtful collection of beautiful things. 🌼 The watch industry should be so grateful that you are dragging their work into the twenty-first century; nobody cares about full page adverts in magazines we only read in the dentist's. Great work as always.

When I think of aviation watches I always come back to the B-style dial Fliegers. The dominant minute numerals give them a very technical and tactical appeal. In that respect I would prefer the Laco models with the more contemporary case like "Aachen", combining the historic reference with some versatility in style. Don´t you think, that this genre comprises an enormous variety of designs? Quite a stretch to fit the Rolex GMT and the Navitimer under the umbrella of one theme...

My Breitling Avenger is my favorite (and only) navigation watch. Years ago, right after I had bought my Rolex GMT Master, I saw a picture of a Breitling in a magazine ad and wished that I had seen this ad before buying my Rolex; It is the most beautiful watch I had ever seen. Recently, while trading guns with my dealer, he offered me an Avenger just like the one in that ad, but with the addition of the little 24 hour quartz 'mini-watch' on the bracelet in exchange for my FN SCAR-H. It was meant to be. Wouldn't mind a Navitimer with a face just like on yours, though.

    Fantastic collection!
One can sense the genuine affection you have to each and everyone off your watches. Very admirable.
My choice of aviation watch would be a flieger, A type dial in particular. Love my Laco, looks like no other watch.

On the day of this video's release, I received my SNK809, my first 'real' watch. As you said, 'the gateway drug'; now, after a week, I am addicted.
The exhibition caseback made me so interested in mechanical watches, never thought about anything other than visual appearance before. I actually filmed it in slo-mo to better see what's going on, and my god - that's a mesmerizing experience..

You asked for our favourite aviation timepieces. Although I really like Flieger watches, I prefer more contemporary designs. My favourite aviation watch is the Sinn 857 UTC. I bought it some 8 years ago and it's still taking the majority of my wrist time. To me it's the ultimate tool watch. It has exactly the complications I find most useful in a watch, it is tough as nails, highly legible, the design is - at least to me - absolutely flawless (I strongly prefer the monochromatic original over the TESTAF version) ) and it is actually very accurate although the 2893-2 is rather delicate with respect to that and needs rather high and constant spring tension to keep time properly.

    Beautiful aviation collection.
I've had several GMT's in the past, but they were mostly homage style from Steinhart and have sold those a while back.
Now, I am enjoying the Glycine Airman 18 Purist (GL0223). It's has the 24-hour movement and really all I need is just 2 time zones. at 39mm with a thickness of just over 10mm, it's the perfect size. It retains much of the originalvintage Airman looks and charm with just slight update. I really like the look of the dual jumbo crowns.. it reminds me a lot of the Omega CK2129 Weems style pilot watch.. much like JLC and Longines produced, back around WW2. It runs great and was and still can be had for very reasonable price of around $500-600.
Like I said, I only need 2 time zones, but I think if I ever wanted to track more than 2, I would just go for a world timer and track all the major time zones around the world at once rather than just 3. I think it makes more sense to go that route unless you really only need to track no more than 3 time zones all the time.
I would still love a flieger some day. Between the A and B dial, I still prefer the B dial.. I like the little extra business of the dial. And, if I ever were to get one, I'd go Laco. I prefer their original pilot design which is basically; a 1:1 replica of their original WW2 versions.. well, they do have the 55mm version which definitely more 1:1, but I'd go with the 42mm.. and I'd try and get it in their special weather beaten finish they specially do.
FYI, I did consider and was happy when they finally made a 39mm version of their original pilot watches. BUT, I think the scale at 39mm is just a tad dainty for a flieger. Additionally, they proportionately scaled down the lug and strap size to 18mm.. which I also find a bit too dainty for a flieger. .. and I've noticed the double rivets on the leather strap at 18mm seems a bit crowded.. they overlap the side stitching a bit which I don't think looks too good. If you can pull off wearing the 42mm with 20mm lug/strap size, I think that's the best most appropriate size for a flieger.
... although, I have to admit at 40mm, WatchGecko has made a nice modern interpretation of them using an ETA movement now.. It uses 20mm lugs/straps which is better. The finishing on them is quite good, a little more polished than the Laco which is more bead blasted, but I think the radiant grey dial with blued hands is the best of the bunch from Watch Gecko. And, the lume application is pretty sweet too.

My personal favourite aviation watch is Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive Navihawk Titanium Ref. JR3034-59E (with C650 movement, which is a solar powered world timer movement without a radio receiver, ..which the later model had) My 10 year experience with that particular watch has been as follows: I set that watch in time when it was new (summer 2008) being set 30 seconds ahead the actual time in purpose, and during first year of use the watch gained 7 seconds during one entire year... Then it began to keeping time extremely well with +/- 2 seconds fluctuation range per year, ending up being the most accurate watch I have ever owned ... Now, after its faultless service of 10 years, I can say one thing about precision; I have never bothered to correct those few seconds watch gained during its first year, and therefore watch reaches noon time about 37 seconds before the official noon time signal is sounded. Watch has ability to enter power saving sleep mode when left in dark, and watch has 4 years power reserve in solar rechargeable capacitor. If need a Robinson Crusoe sort of survival watch during international business travel, 100 meter water resistant titanium frame & bracelet Eco-Drive solar powered aviator watch from Citizen is the ultimate aviator watch for that task... Too bad they don't make this great model anymore... :( "Regardless of price or brand of a watch.., the most important function of the watch is to be reliable and keep time with extreme precision, where ever you are..." As Citizen Watch Co reached age of 100 years this year.., I bought during summer time one of their "good value for money" The Signature Collection "posh" models.., Octavia (with FIVE year warranty) .., it has proven to be a great watch too.., an "every day wear" sort of a watch, ..although it looks bit like Audemars Piguet Royal Oak... Well.., that ain't a bad thing... :D

Sinn 857 S UTC is my only and favorite aviation watch! I love using my watches and not having to worry, and Sinn just make such good tool watches, from aviation to divers. Hell, even most of the dress watches they make are certified 10 bar water resistant.

  • @valjean3141
    @valjean3141 6 лет назад

I briefly considered getting a Navitimer, but then decided that a Colt Quartz Chronograph was a better fit for my personality. I have the same reaction to the dial that you describe with the Navi -- it's just gorgeous, plays with the light in interesting ways, and has wonderful three dimensional depth to it, which you really appreciate because of how well Breitling does the AR coating on its crystals. With the Colt I gave up the automatic movement, but in return I got super accuracy; quick set date; 200m WR; and (surprise) really great lume. I love Breitling -- like you, I also have a Rolex GMT II, but the Colt wins more day-to-day to day wrist time from me, without a doubt.

I used to be so enamoured with the Navitimer. However, I quickly realised that with all the vibration and movement in the cockpits of the small airplanes I fly for fun, its flight computer wouldn't be usable during actual flight. So, the GMT complication seems the most practical. As such, I wear my Casio GWM5610-1 while I dream about the real GMTs and the glory days of Pan-Am...

Which of the 8 would be mine?
Without a second to think about it, I would go for your vintage Omega.
Even when we forget all of its history and importance for the brand. This dial is so amazing that non of the other as the slightest chance...
Not big into aviation watches - a Parnis Gmt Master homage which is interestingly extremely accurate - and a Seiko SNK805 with NH36 - 809 dial - Dagaz hands and and old leather NATO...
Seeing your reaction to the Navitimers size gave me a smile... - totally the same here in the opposite. A 30mm vintage Invicta on a 8“ wrist - but I don’t care and I love it!!!

My problem with most aviation watches is they are often too big and too thick. This was fine when you wore your watch over your gloves back in the distant past, but almost no one does that now days in the aviation community (it's a safety hazard, as it could get snagged on equipment or a parachute when trying to punch out). The glycine Airman 18 is one of the few I found that met my needs of being a dual timezone watch, 200m water resistance, and still able to fit under flight gloves.

    Hi TGV,
at first I say 'Thank you' because you brought me into watches. It's an amazing hobby. Currently I'm only owning an Seiko Alpinist.
My favourite aviation piece would be the navitimer, (I'm saving my money for this watch) for me it's the coolest watch you can own. :)
    Best regards from Germany

      Hello Mattias,
I am so happy to hear that, you have no idea!
And what a choice, the Alpinist is the choice of champions.
As you come from a country that has one of the greatest contributions to the development of the wrist watch, may I suggest the Sinn 903?
Thank you and keep enjoying the hobby!
      Best regards,
      TGV

@@theurbangentry Yes the Sinn would be also a very cool watch. (Most notably the version 903 St B E with the blue dial and the white subdial 😍) Thank you for the suggestion 👍

Always great to see collections which aren’t just Rolex, Omega, AP etc. Can enjoy a £500 watch just as much as a £15,000 watch!

If you set the 6’OC subdial alarm, it won’t move. How is this useful as a second time zone? Downloaded the Seiko instructions and there is no mention of being able to use this as a second time zone. Edit: WRT Seiko Flight master

As always, a wonderful video great stuff. Personally loved the history of the Omega, Seiko, Navitimer and the Fortis. Funny how in the space of the year I have slightly 'gone off' the Rolex GMT, but I think that has more to do with the prices and the new model which Im finding more and more blingy and that Im starting to look more and more vintage beauties. Getting a crush on the Breitling Toptime panda dial....lovely!

Quick question: On a hackable/ hand winding watch such as the Seiko SRP. Is it bad to turn the time back? Or should you always go forward like on a non hackable automatic Seiko?

Beautiful videos, these! I'm not even a big fan of vintage watches, but I can't get over the WWII Omega. To my mind, that watch, plus your Explorer, plus maybe a forthcoming Patek perpetual calendar, and you'd be all set!

Your watch/strap combinations are pure class! My two favorites are The Flighty and the Navitimer, in no particular order. The yellow perlon pairs well with the flighty, May have to get one for mine! Excellent video sir, thank you very much!

A good review of your aviation collection. I first thought your favorite was the Fortis, but then your review of your Omega, well it was definitely obvious. I believe your Omega over the Navi. Due to the family history, I can see why. I truly cherish your passion for the vintage and history of your timepieces and what they hold for you. Your passion for horology is inspiring. I also love my Navi. Nicely done TGV, until the next collection review, all the best Sir. 👍

Thank you TGV for another inspiring video and a few new ideas!
I am yet to find the "best" watch for sport flying: one of my favorite is Stowa Type B (wears well, historic touch, but hard to quickly read the hour hand, I missed to do it correctly a few times, minutes are more important anyway, probably the original 55mm would do it:)); Breitling old chronograph (convenient for calculations, chronometer, though two tone is kind of not feeling fit for flying); SKX009 (flying with it makes a diver a pilot watch, right?:) easiest to read, but no chronometer); Protrek (local sunset/sundown, chronometer, compass to double check, never used altimeter though and miss bezel, mechanic, analog feel); Cartier Santos (first pilot and wrist watch ever has an awesome feel, my wife's version a bit too small though); Speedmaster Schumi 2002 version (great chrono, but should better stay on the ground:)

    Hi TGV,
I am intrigued by the Omega Spitfire. Do you know the history of the watch? If it required service, would you send it back to Omega, or would you have your own watchmaker handle it? Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy your channel's content, whether watch-related or not.

Amazing collection! I do think the collection does need the Speedmaster Professional back, and it is rather underrepresented in the Flieger department. My Stowa Klassik 40 no logo has taken up all my wrist time since August, I would highly recommend that one!
