If I am not mistaken, it was Longines, who patented the first Chronograph, it was Longines Hour Angle watch, that Lindbergh used, when he made the first flight across the Atlantic .... and it was Longines stop watches that timed Olympic sports events from the beginning of modern games. The Longines watchmaking history goes way back to 1832, nigh on 20 years before Patek Philippe came to existence. There are obviously few differences between movement finishes e.g. Patek watchmakers spend considerably longer time, scallopping and hand polishing movements, which in many instances, are Swatch (Lemania) made movements. Patek throughout their history, have been known to buy complete movements from other watchmakers ... so to me, that devalues the brand, when compared with luxury brands like Breguet, Jaeger LeCoultre, or Girard Perregaux. Longines brand has been around for a long time and unlike Patek Philippe, they have never got bust .... so that must count for something.

Average rent for a studio in downtown Helsinki is about 900€/month, so if you can find a studio that only costs 750€/month, then that studio is affordable in relation to most other apartments.
vegass04-As a youngster I wandered into a Rolex dealer. Asked about the most affordable piece, which happened to be an Air King. It came on a strap only, in steel, in a fine wooden case. $375. The Day-Date at that time was $4000, which also came in a nice wooden box.

Affordable means the price at which a person can make a purchase with ease or without loss of a significant amount of that person's disposable income. These watches are priced at amounts that most people watching cannot afford. They cannot make the purchase easily; they would have to work and save for a long time. Or, making the purchase would hurt and likely represent a significant loss of that person's disposable income. Even top earners in the American university educated professionals do not have 5k to toss around after all other expenses (student loan debt, rent or mortgage, utilities, healthcare costs, food and supplies, other expenses such as insurance costs and discretionary spending). Only, the elite earners of society can "afford" these watches. Everyone else has to save to buy one or
£250 (at whatever the US exchange rate is today :) ) is probably an upper limit I'd maybe consider approaching just once. Fortunately my tastes are sufficiently plebeian that there're only a couple of watches over that price that I'd really want, and I already have both of 'em. :D For the rest, it's Timex, Seiko, (gasp!) Casio, and maybe if I get really lucky on eBay, a Longines as a restoration project.
My first watch purchase was a Seiko Sarb017. I see a lot of people speaking bad about seiko in the comments but I worked hard for that watch and I loved it. So much so that I'm gonna buy it again since someone stole it. I like watching your ch. because it makes me shoot for a dream and to work towards it. One day I'll own a IWC I guarantee it! But for now the knowledge you give and the beauty that you show makes me appreciate watches like I didn't before. Thanks for that.
Personally, I think the seiko flightmaster is a great alternative to a navitimer. I'm a broke student so the $8000+ price bracket is way out of my range right now, and the seiko gives a similar feel, for an easily attainable price
That Longines Heritage is dope! Do a review on fashion watches, i.e. Nixon, G-Shock, etc. I just want to hear what you have to say. Please and thank you. You guys are the best!
There are tons of Seiko reviews out there, and comparisons between closely related Seikos at that. The 5 is what it is, great value for small money. If you like the look of one, the rest falls into place without the need for too much research.
My personal alternative to the Rolex Submariner is the Tag Heuer Aqua Racer 500M WAK2110.BA0830. I've owned it for a little over 3.5 years. I bought this watch before I knew anything about watches. The movement isn't anything to write home about but I love the way it wears and how it looks. Especially the horizontal textured lines on the black dial. No regrets. Love your channel!
"...treated with more dignity than your average member of the Royal family." Brilliant. I was surprised by the Mont Blanc. Surely the alternative to the IWC would have been a Stowa Flieger Classic Chrono? It has the same heritage... both companies were commissioned by the Third Reich to produce these watches. The Mont Blanc might be the more interesting watch... a different take on the theme, but if you want something that is close, and has the history associated, then I don't think you should overlook the Stowa.
Or you could buy a Seiko 6139 and get a column wheel automatic chronograph with more historical significance than any modern Longines for around $300-$500.
Agreed.... Same basic movement as some of the older submariners, just as well made, just as water resistant and just as good looking, but for a fraction of the cost. Was my first Dive watch, and I love it.
As a contrast to the budget diver, the Oris. I personally think that as a young high school equivalent student, you don't really have even 1500£. But something as the Seiko Prospex divers (i have a SRPA21K1) are, to me, really something
Magnus Cohen I have a weakness for blue dials and that is probably what drew me in. I'll buy the watch in about a week or so. Question: did you change the bracelet for another bracelet or strap on your SRPA21K1?
one of the older Atlantic Worldmasters with 52 jewels was about 300-400$ a year or two ago. i got one that belonged to my great-grandfather and i really love it, a true classic!
I would you to suggest me an affordable alternative to Patek Philip 5170g black dial/breguet numerals . It’s my favorite watch but it costs a fortune and I can’t find something similar in an affordable price ! Thanks in advance
Alternative to PP5960 is the Maurice Lacroix Master Annual Calender Flyback Chronograph. What it lack is day, day-night indicator and power reserve indiactor. But it has a nice Big date though. Fraction of the price of PP5960.
In the field of dive watches it is easy to go to Rolex or Omega, as you mentioned mostly very costly. Next to the beautiful Oris 65 the Tudor Fifty Eight is a great alternative. I feel that people who buy a watch like Oris or Tudor dont always go for the money aspect, these people did their homework and looked a little futher. Thank you for an other great example of how a video must be made.
There IS no alternative to an expensive watch. (but there are great watches in their own price bracket that are affordable - Sinn, Seiko, Ball and others)

I think the Christopher Ward c60 Trident makes a great alternative to the Rolex Sub. You get a ceramic bezel, a sapphire crystal, excellent finishing and the same movement as the Oris all for under $1500 and it's available in a COSC version also.
@@eyeheartsushi2212 I own the red bezel version and it has been an excellent watch. It runs regularly at around 3.5 seconds a day witch is neck and neck with my Breitling Superocean Professional. I couldn't recommend it enough.

A nice nomos sets you back at least 4k, sin is even worse and please dont mention the sin 104 as a cheap alternative. There's no blander watch on history :D
A Seiko divers would of been a great affordable alternative to the deapsea. The look very similar and both with last decades and still be timeless fashion wise
guess what I’m saying he could of used that as an alternative for THE VIDEO, is not exactly an affordable alternative vid is it. It’s just a bit less expensive but still £7-8k video
Seagull ST19 movement is very affordable and column-wheel, companies like poljot as well as some chinese brands take advantage of this to deliver pretty good chronos at the ~4-500 range. Only downside is they're manual wind. Poljot Strela is a pretty amazing looking watch, Seagull 1963 ain't a slouch either. If you're looking for truly inexpensive mechanical chronos (200-400) with a storied history those two might be your best bet. Maybe people aren't such a big fan of eastern manufacturing (for some reason), but the Seagull 19 movement is a true successor to a swiss movement, and a feat of engineering in its own right.
With watches I’d strongly suggest saving up for years to buy your heart’s desire rather than purchasing watches that cost a quarter of the purchase price as they will never satisfy in the long run and you’ll just build up a collection of lesser priced watches that could add up to the big purchase anyway in terms of servicing, straps and repair. Try to offload these cheaper watches and you’ll take a haircut. If you want a decent beater watch go quartz and stick with Tissot and their market segment. If you bought the Rolex Sub you’d be able to sell it at 90% plus for example. Mid range watches are a false economy in my view but just my 2c.
the Epster You make a valid point, but if a person's "heart's desire" is a popular Rolex model, then that changes everything. It'd be nice if anyone that saved money for a Rolex Sub could buy one at retail price. Sadly, that is not the case these days.
True only to a certain extent. I've never been truly impressed with a watch as I have just now seeing that patek philippe. Does that mean I'll stick with a Casio until I'm 70 years old to blow a chunk of my savings on a watch at that age?
I saved up for a while to purchase a Submariner or a Sea Dweller outright. I was disappointed with the F&F of a 8-11 thousand dollar watch. I ended up buying a Steinhart and I'm very pleased with it...though I still have that money set aside should I ever change my mind. I do agree, save up to buy the watch you want then decide if you want it.
Why are these videos so good!? No but seriously, love the work you guys are putting out, definitely the best watch channel on youtube (to me at least).
A Tag Heuer Aquaracer instead of the Submariner, Bell&Ross Aeronavale instead of IWC and Baume&Mercier Clifton instead of Patek...this are the first that come to mind.
I wish Ball did more with Ceramic bezels. I have been eyeing their Green Beret watch for a while, here's to hoping they're going to do another special campaign to drop the price tag.
Very nice alternatives for the original luxury timepieces. You have avoided the usual cheap versions of the originals and have chosen great horological examples of affordable watches. Thanks for sharing!
And now have Tissot the Swissmatic watches, the worst kind of movement for a watch. I have a Tissot, but you can't see the "100 years more ecperience".... Btw... Tissot have "only" 50 years more "experience"
Longines is the best value luxury watch. They have the same quality as Omega or very near and some of the very very best heritage. much better than an Oris or Rado, Tag etc
Most of steinhart watches are just strait up rip offs. The ocean 1 and the 39 and 44 replicate a Rolex so much it's actually distasteful. As with their Nav-B replicating a Big pilot. If anything I'd say the titanium model or the Ocean 2 are decent buys.
@@vangledosh yeah I know the difference. A steinhart onean 1 has the same hands, same crown, same bezel, same font, same case design almost everything is designed to be the same. Thats not a hommage. That's a rip off. The Oris is a hommage.

I have it and it sits well on the arm and it is an even bigger stunner in person!
I actually would settle down for a Nomos Glasshutte Ahoi, not too expensive nor indecently cheap, just worth it in my opinion
IWC , quite ugly to be honest , Stowa has nice fliegers tbh
Please review the oris big crown pointer date bronze, it’s a very handsome piece.
Another alternative from a storied Swiss brand that goes under most radars: Fortis. They have some cracking watches at this price.
Wish you would do one for brands like Orient and Spinnaker
Sinn, Nomos , and Mido are my relatively affordable alternatives brands with high quality time pieces
nomos ""cheap".... wut?
@@waferpie123 meant affordable in comparison to the expensive ones presented
Sinn is no longer "affordable" these days.
Shipmate It depends what you consider affordable.
A nice nomos sets you back at least 4k, sin is even worse and please dont mention the sin 104 as a cheap alternative. There's no blander watch on history :D
What about seiko alpinist,
Or tag heuer carrera,
Fortis?
All of these are great watches, but I was expecting really affordable options. Longines and Montblanc are not really “affordable” lol
Not exactly affordable alternatives, obviously living indifferent worlds
Rusty Shackleford What is F & F?
@@eyeheartsushi2212 I'm not shackle, but I think he means fit n finish
I recently purchased a Longines Avigator Titanium Big Eye Blue Dial. Aesthetics and value, an incredible timepiece.
Why are these videos so good!?
No but seriously, love the work you guys are putting out, definitely the best watch channel on youtube (to me at least).
is there a review of the heuer Monaco?
Nice video!! But can you make an alternatives version for these alternative for the poorer people lol
Oris big crown is a good IWC alternative too.
Provide a solution for Removing Scratches from Wrist watches.
A Tag Heuer Aquaracer instead of the Submariner, Bell&Ross Aeronavale instead of IWC and Baume&Mercier Clifton instead of Patek...this are the first that come to mind.
What is your opinion of Grovana automatic dive watches?
I'd buy a Tudor over that Oris anyday.
Sean Blackburn Same.
The new Ball Challenger 18 Limited Edition I think is a great alternative to a Rolex Submariner.
I wish Ball did more with Ceramic bezels. I have been eyeing their Green Beret watch for a while, here's to hoping they're going to do another special campaign to drop the price tag.
That Montblac is gorgeous :O
But holy moly have you seen the Montblanc 1858 Geosphere? Do want.
Very nice alternatives for the original luxury timepieces. You have avoided the usual cheap versions of the originals and have chosen great horological examples of affordable watches. Thanks for sharing!
Tissot is good and has literally has about a 100 years more experience in watch making than rolex
As Lange (and independents galore) shows, the number of years as a brand isn't a great indicator of anything.
And what does Tissot have that rivals Rolex and their sky dweller collection, or Daytona ceramic collection?
And now have Tissot the Swissmatic watches, the worst kind of movement for a watch. I have a Tissot, but you can't see the "100 years more ecperience"....
Btw... Tissot have "only" 50 years more "experience"
And had been made and worn by the royalities
I really love the dual shots where the second hands are synchronized. Art.
This is the “ Let them eat cake” version of the watch world!🤪
Love the longines but can’t find the version with the gold hands anywhere.
When most of us saw the title of tfhe video we thought more like 300-500 MAX affordable.
I might look at something like a Stowa rather than a Montblanc for the IWC replacement -- better heritage at the same price point.
£1500 affordable ? 😂😂
comparatively.
In the sense that mortals will be able to save up to buy one (without getting murdered by their significant other).
+Runoratsu 😂too true👍
It's an advert what do you expect?
@@eiloncheung well yeah, in comparison to the ISS, a super yacht is affordable, that doesn't make it AFFORDABLE
I would like to see a comparison between a audemars piguet royal oak (chronograph) and a maurice lacroix aikon (chronograph)
0:49 It's a fake Rolex Submariner
Is it column wheel or Colin Weil?
This Longines has a great look!
I agree.
Longines is the best value luxury watch. They have the same quality as Omega or very near and some of the very very best heritage. much better than an Oris or Rado, Tag etc
Stowa Verus or Klassik Flieger over that Mont Blanc.
Ps- We know Richemont bought you, don't rub it in our faces. Plis.
I would also like your opinion on the Ginault Ocean Rover
STEINHART will be good enough of a diver for me, for a third of the price of an Oris
@@vangledosh
So, if I use your logic. And purchase a Fake rolex from China with the rolex brand names removed. The watch is now a homage. And this okay?
I really dig that Longines. Really sharp, classic.
