The old argument of "this car hobby is a waste of money." News flash, all hobbies are a waste of money. My parents don't support cars as a hobby, but I'm not gonna change, so they dropped it.

    • @PlatinumNath

Yeah this basically. Like if car hobby looks expensive, then they're going to be in for a surprise to learn how even collecting minifigures became expensive too now, or doing any other hobbies that seem cheap at first.

My parents never supported it. But i started fixing stuff on their cars and they don't discourage it anymore. They actually encourage it once in a blue moon.
Considering how things where 10 years ago, i call it progress!

My dad has always liked cars, but he's not enthusiastic about anything, he's the most boring, passive dude you could posibly imagine, the few times we've gone to go-kart tracks he's been taking pictures instead of driving, I just don't know what to do with him...
Anyway, I do not only love cars but also computers, so I'm setup for entertainment both in home and outside, and I don't really need him to be on board as I have found a few communities that share interests with me.

My dad has a 64.5 mustang convertible thats been sitting for 25 years. Growing up i always fantasize about us working on it as a father son project. He is always reluctant to work on it and it was a battle to even get him to change the drum brakes i bought on it 10 years ago. He wont sell it to me either. He is one on those guys who say they'll restore it eventually but never do sadly. Im in my 30s now and its still in the garage sitting. It has turned into a sad memory of something that could've been with him. I have a son of my own now and im taking ur advice to heart. Im about the same age as ur son and its good to see u made a big effort to bond with him.

Here’s how I got my parents to accept my car hobby.
    Me “hey I’m buying a Toyota GT86”
Mom “don’t be stupid, that’s a thursty impractical car”
    Bought it anyway
Me “I’m buying a TRD spoiler for it from Japan”
Mom “don’t waste your money that’s stupid”
    Bought it anyway
Really is that easy tbh 🤔

mine's not with my parents, but my landlord is very much a (for lack of a better word) douche bag when it comes to the car hobby/culture. i live on about 2 acres of land way outside of town in the woods with access to basically all of the 200 that this guy owns. i have no neighbors for miles. quick vehicle intro, i was given an 89 s10 for my 14th birthday by my grandmother 20 years ago that i drove to high school. this was in the early 2000s so of course my truck was slammed. springs not bags "static" i believe its called today lol with 18s and it was painted canary yellow. it was a nice looking truck that got me all sorts of attention back then. next vehicle is a fox body mustang, one of my dream cars. i got it as a graduation present for myself back in 2008. i still had the truck but it started having issues and even though this isnt about my parents they didnt really like me working on stuff, so i had to park it for the time being. anyway, i drove my fox body around for a while until it started acting up so i began to slowly start working on it, but never could pinpoint my issue. this was a 4cyl fox so naturally i cared less about trying to do much to it and started looking for a 302 for it. found one in the junkyard and around that same time i moved into my grandmothers house several hours away where i live now dealing with this landlord. when i moved initially she wanted to "help me" by finding someone without my knowledge to work on my car for me. long story short with that, these people ended up basically stealing $4000 from my grandmother and didnt actually fix my car. around 2011 i finally got tired of my car not running like i wanted so i parked it and began to pull the motor so i could build it the way i wanted to in the beginning. there was a pretty serious family issue that occurred around that time so i moved back in with my parents leaving both of my vehicles at my grandmothers. i was unable to go back to my grandmothers until she passed away in early 2017, which is when i ultimately moved back permanently and took over her lease. she had been living there for around 20 years when she passed away and the landlord never actually lived on the property until i moved in. he moved about a mile behind my house on the end of the dead-end dirt road. even though im grieving the loss of my grandmother i was also exited to FINALLY after all this time work on and fix both of my vehicles, but like i said shortly after i moved in the landlord moved onto the property as well. he began to make remarks about my vehicles. about their condition and appearance. mind you i did not have a garage so they were just in my backyard by a makeshift workshop i had put together, but they were not old and rusted or anything like most of the older gen car projects tend to be. they were just faded and dirty. neither one had parts laying around or on blocks they were just parked as if they ran. i moved here when it was in the wintertime so even though it doesnt really snow down here in the south, this particular year it actually did snow a few inches so i was unable to do anything to either one of them at first. he began to harass me about getting rid of them and called them junk and then threatening to have them towed to the junkyard "where they belonged". i kept telling him that you cant just build a car in a few days or even a few months, especially when i work nights. that it takes time but he didnt care. he is an old guy (late 80s if not older) and i am in my mid 30s, he constantly talks at me as if im some punk kid or something. in 2018 he posted a written threat on my front door giving me 2 weeks to get them gone or hed have them towed and my only option (the only option i was going to take at the time anyway) was to rent a small piece of land to store them on until i figured out what to do. even though i moved the vehicles i still had a motor that i bought for the car sitting on my property so when the world shut down in late 2019 i drug that motor out and put it on my engine stand and placed it under the small utility shed awning close to the house with the intent on working on it since i wasnt working. when he saw it he lost his shit and started threatening me again about me not living in a junkyard and a bunch of other stupid shit, and again demanded that i get rid of the motor immediately. moving for me is not an option so im having to stick this all out even still today. for the past 5 years or so my vehicles have been away from me and i havent been able to do anything with them. i randomly went by there a few years back only to find that they had been broken into and i had hundreds of dollars of stuff stolen out of them, and since the window had been busted out my interior got ruined. couple weeks ago i got a frantic call from the landowner where they were being stored telling me that they were gone. someone had went onto that property and stole them both including that motor. i had the car, truck, motor, and a set of turbine wheels (foxbody wheels) with slicks mounted on them all stolen. i reported them stolen and was contacted by the junkyard telling me that they had them. problem is though that they crushed my truck and all my other stuff was gone as well, all they actually had was my car and it has been damaged further than just the interior being ruined. there's scratches and dents and gouges from being moved around, and the worst part is this landlord is still bitchin about me wanting it here so im just basically getting rid of my car now anyway. people need to understand that other people have hobbies that you may not understand or be into and regardless of your "authority" you should just leave people alone.

Builds his own guns too. Only prob is Dad needs to come to the rescue and fund the expensive stuff if ya know what I mean. Best kid ever, no drugs, no drinkin, just cars. I’ll fund that hobby any-day.. just my 2 shits. Happy Dad day CL! Good job!

People who not only not understand but refuse to understand car culture are usually that hardy towards cars, and only would flinch when you tell that the very car they say is an old trash is actually a rare heavily lusted after expensive sports car, and even then would still call it ridiculous. Hard to convince, probably won't ever be able to.

It's very important, I can't even drive, and don't own a car at 40 because my stupid Father was a GM Mechanic and told me the exact same thing since I was a child, "Cars are a waste of money, a bad investment, don't get into cars, you don't want to fix cars like me". He prevented me from driving at every opportunity.

I didn't have a dad but my mom wouldnt let me buy any fast cars. I wanted a 350z for my first car but she forced me to get a Jeep Cherokee. Thats fine, I understood why at the time. She was so controlling I eventually left her. Havent seen her since I was a teenager many, many years ago. I sold that Jeep and got a MK4 Supra Turbo and a Barrett 50 cal along with 10+ other rifles when I turned 24. I always knew I'd get the life I wanted instead of the life she wanted me to have. I'm my own person. Sad that it had to take so much hardship to convince her. Maybe one day I'll see her again. Who knows... One things for sure- I'll never change for anyone.

Some of my best memories are based around the shared passion for cars. Now I'm older I'm now teaching him things around it but also still learning from him. I keep cherishing them now and create more while he is still with me as you only get one opportunity.

I’m not someone who has a die hard car hobby but my dad knows I love my car although he doesn’t approve how I actually got the car as a rebuilt title with transmission issues but he knows that I’ve put a lot of work into it and he’s proud that I was able to get it working. I wish there was some type of connection between me and dad for my car hobby. My dad is enthusiastic about cars but he’s not an all out car guy. We both mostly bond about the fast and furious movies and that’s about it. Sometimes I have the urge to let have him drive with me or he can drive my car. He’s ok with me driving but he’s very cautious on speed and stuff like that so it’s not really fun when I wanna show off or something.

My dad's only connection to car culture was watching F1 and driving our 1.4 Opel Astra G . Fortunately though he never was against my hobby, he was the one that informed me a lot of the times if there was a car show, a drift competition or time attack competition or hill climb races. Events that , since I am from an island with 90k people, only happened once or twice per year. He also was the one that didn't have a problem with me learning to ride a motorcycle without having a license
