Actually, after almost 27 years in martial arts, my original black belt I earned in Parker Kenpo is still with me, has added many stripes and is highly faded and worn. We use to tell students that “a white belt turns black through training and a black belt turns white with experience.” And that is not just anecdotal, it’s reality.

Although their form is not really fluid it may be due to non contact sparring. Hence why no ones getting hit. Of course the point of non contact spar is demonstrate a routine not flaying yourself around.

Those Karate guys were 100% McDojo Black Belts. Karate in general is in an awful state in the west. Some karatekas are slowly updating the art and also "de-westernizing" the art. Traditional Okinawan Karate training was way more functional and smarter than modern western Karate, it even had some ground training back in the day and Katas used to be trained in a really different, more functional way.

I’ve seen this while taking my grandson to Tae Kwon Do classes. The older men and women could barely kick higher than their knee were clearly out of shape. They were cheered on as they attempted to spar; very funny.
What this is all about is the Benjamin's it didn’t matter if they were good or bad they went through the belt system white to black. Every test cost with the black belt costing the most. For the black belt there were two test one for the American T K A and a second for the international Black Belt Test.
I have seen Black Belts that were bad and I mean bad none could do a split thevforms were sloppy at best yet they were rewarded with their next level belt they tested for.
This video you posted is a prime example.

The "black belts" at around 6:30 are actually Tae Kwon Do practitioners. I had a friend who once brought me to a tournament and it looked just like this. When I commented how the black belt students' techniques were the same as the white and green belt students, his response was, "Yes, but they're faster." I believe my reply was something along the lines of "Um... okay."

    • @GeorgeZandelle

Fight Commentary Breakdowns I'm not sure. Van Damme and Seagal came up in the late 80's. By the time Speakman came up, Jackie Chan flicks like Supercop and Rumble in the Bronx were starting to be shown in American theaters, and the Hong Kong fight choreography blew away the stuff guys like Speakman were coming with. Then we had the early UFCs, Jet Li and Donnie Yen getting popular in the West, and Yuen Woo Ping making Hong Kong action mainstream with The Matrix. Things just changed. Now martial arts badass roles go to guys like Liam Neeson and Keanu Reaves ( who has trained a lot in BJJ and Judo). Dacascos, btw, is a guy who should have been a much bigger star.

CrossingFist I will tell you after 26+ years in the Kenpo community and having trained with Jeff many times over the last two decades. Jeff is a real educator and artist. He didn’t want to pursue the Hollywood scene. After Mr. Parker passed away, it was always part of his dream to put Kenpo into the spotlight. Jeff did an excellent Job in the first movie portraying Kenpo and then after Mr. Parker’s passing, the Kenpo community experienced many shifts in leadership and advancement. Leaders like Frank Trejo and Huk Planas (and many others) reorganized Kenpo leadership and Jeff begin to make modifications to Kenpo and the grappling aspect of it. Jeff became so engrossed in Kenpo’s evolution that it became his only driving force (like it always had) and we are thankful we didn’t lose him to Hollywood. So Jeff is a star, he has been a leader in the advancement of Kenpo, its evolution (something Mr. Parker always believed in order to make Kenpo the most dynamic and effective system it could be). So Jeff turned back to teaching and training because Mr. Parker’s death was only a few months before the movie debuted. Mr. Parker passed in Dec 1990 and Jeff’s film came out in early 1991. No one expected Mr. Parker’s death and the unification of the Kenpo community (which was a worldwide community) all under his direction fractured as the next “head” of the system tried. Then we went from one Kenpo organization to dozens over the years. Still on guys like Huk Planas, Speakman and those part of the close Kenpo insiders are the real leaders. That included Jeff, he put his love for Mr. Parker and the Kenpo system in priority to keep it from unraveling for power shifts.
      That’s it in a nutshell.

6:33 if I’m not mistaken that is traditionally Okinawa philosophy. In the beginning you’d start with your belt black and it would turn white over time from wear and tear. So the less black the belt the more experienced karate ka

In taekwondo, there's a non-contact exercise called one step sparring (or was it one-for-one sparring?) where one person kicks then the other, in really rapid succession. It helps you to switch from attack to defence, countering, footwork, timing etc.
But THAT i do not know

Hmm seems that it's not either one of those names. But I think it's a well established exercise because two different TKD teachers have used it.
Regardless, the people in the video are either trolling or are a disgrace

If you ever see a black belt the only reason they got it was from there knowledge of the art itself and not their fighting ability. That’s how’s they test you and rank you up. It’s through forums and knowledge of the art
