Re buffer, I do get up to 50 shots before buffer fills shooting compressed lossless Raw. But you have to turn off all in camera processing functions such as distortion control, d-lightening, etc .. apparently these options take up processing power. If you strip these out, you get what was advertised. I kind of feel that experts who educate we less knowledgeable public should dig deeper before making definitive statements.
Since Matt shot RAW, you would have hoped, Distortion Control, if that was in fact the issue, which shouldn't be doing anything while in RAW, but it is good to know there is a solution
Dada Kaka Of course the camera does processing in raw. It'd never write an image to the sensor if that was the case. All sensor require a processing chip or that sensor would do nothing, you have image smoothing to help reduce nr in the images even with no nr set it'd still do some as some pixels in the sensor can be dead and the processor can work around those problems. The nikon cameras have d lighting and white balance those also come into effect. You also have aa on the images use you see that when zoomed right in. To say the raw image is 0 processed is absurd.
I really appreciate how Matt makes a few comments about the D5 as well...The D5 is the king at fast action low-light with a slightly better AF performance compared to the D850 as Matt have shown us!
I live in Oregon and I can't imagine being able to create better images than what my D810 gives me. I know the files are sharper under controlled conditions but Landscapes...?
I pulled the trigger when it was first announced. Played the waiting game and watched all of your video's waiting for the day to come. Happy to say I've got mine! couldn't be happier! Thanks Matt for all of your hard work!
Great video. I love these Field Tested videos. They are very detailed, and I enjoy watching how you test things in the field. Plus it's fun to watch you explore these places.
Matt, that's a fantastic video of Iceland and it's so much better to actually see interesting footage + images while learning a bit from a camera / lens (old or new) then just having someone show it around. Even if you can't go to such a fantastic place I'd say you've found a great format - I hope you keep on with it! I'm enjoying watching those in a combined (kind of) documentary + real world product test. Many many thanks for that and when you put up the new RUclips SPONSOR option I'll be sure to be sponsoring you.
There are many settings that will reduce your buffer. Mine wasn't able to shoot 51 14bit lossless compresed files in a row as well, but It was able more than 60 after I set it up correctly. For example image preview reduce your buffer. Also shooting at ISO 6400 and more will reduced buffer. There are more, but it is definitely capable to shoot fas action without buffer issue. This is something I couldn't say about my D750. Even at 12bit losy compressed it was barely usable.
Dear Matt, I follow your channel for a long while and i wanted to congratulate on this video. It is your best IMHO, it looks amazing and the places are stunning, and the review is presented in the best and most clear way possible. Great work. Thanks Yair
Took this from a user "killerbob" who contacted Nikon on the issue: "The Rxx buffer capacity displayed on the camera is based on an average memory card speed (approx. 100Mbit/s), while the capacity listed in the Manual was calculated with the fastest available card (aprox. 440Mbit/s). This means that it is expected that these numbers do not match in some cases - however you should be able to take approx. 50 images with your fast card in Ch mode before the camera slows down, even if the screen shows R22. Also, please note that the total active buffer capacity depends on the buffer fill / write rate balance, and hence the file size and fps speed you are shooting vs. card speed. When you attach the EN-EL18 battery the Ch speed increases, which is reflected in the reduced buffer capacity display. This would be normal then".
Additionally, user stated: "I talked to to Nikon support, and they actually were able to recreate on their D850, and hence confirm that there is an issue. They unfortunately only had a slower XQD card, but there is indeed an issue, and they will keep me updated on the progress"
I really enjoyed this new style episode. I look forward to seeing more in the series. The background stories and drama caught in the 'B' role is a great addition. I can only imagine the blue streak after that D850 got kicked into the ocean. Maybe a future episode could be entitled "The perils of travel photography."
You just made me book my trip to Iceland so much easier to nail.... Thanks a lot! LOL. Still using the D800 and the Sony A6500. Considering replacing the D800 with the D850.
You failed to mention that the D5 costs an extra $2500 to get the faster buffer, plus it's less than half go the resolution at less than half the megapixels... for landscapes, I'll keep my D850 !
Wow Matt... This "Field Tested" video was fantastic. I've been watching your videos for years, and you've really just reached another level with this one... Great job!
Totally agree awesome job I just showed my wife and we now want to go to Iceland and as for the d850 if I wasn’t heavily invested in Canon it would be on my short list.
Great review! This is the most enjoyable review I have seen for the D850. The field trip really made it special. D850 is out of my budget, but this video makes me want to visit Iceland!
You mentioned that the buffer filled up more quickly than advertised. Try using only the XQD card. On the D500, the transfer rate slowed down to the slower card if both slots were being used.
Gorgeous video. Iceland is definitely on the bucket list. For the photographer who wants one camera capable of "doing it all," there appears to be no better option than the D850.
Amazing field test video you've put together Matt. You've already sold the D850 to me, though curious as to which Mavic you used in Iceland. I use an Air 2, but your footage seems cleaner, so I'm assuming a bigger sensor, like the Mavic 2 pro? Keep the amazing videos coming Matt. :)
Great video Matt, this is just an inspirational video for me to get out there and take some more photos rather than weddings. It has made me want to go to Iceland for my 1 year anniversary with my wife and baby. I hope one day I will run into you. Subscribed.
Looks like a fantastic camera. Alas, my D810 only has about 2,500 frames on it so I cannot justify an upgrade (just a hobbyist here). Iceland looks amazing and always appreciate your "world tested" perspective.
11:00 About your comment on WB going crazy at high iso, this doesn't seem like normal behaviour. I think you can safely attribute it to the resulting faster shutter speeds de-syncing your shots with the strobing lighting in the barn. Very common with fluoro lights.
I like this style of review. Practical info and not endless specs and focus charts. The thing is, you made me want to spend money on a trip to Iceland much more than on a new D850. :) Thanks, Matt, for a fun and informative video.
Matt, if you want a better chance of capturing the Northern Lights, go around the solstices. Nobody knows exactly why, but they're more likely to show up around that time of the year. Of course we're in solar minimum right now, so chances are that you won't see them as much as during solar maximum in a few years.
I was in Iceland the same (first) week that you were...the south was pretty stormy so we stayed north and west. I had hoped to have a new 850 body for the trip, but alas it was not to be (its still on order) My D3 managed well as it always has, but I do wish I had something 'more' on this trip. I'm totally looking forward to getting the new body.....and returning to Iceland next year to pick up where we left off. Great video and images...totally has me pumped !
The most exciting thing to me about this camera is that it's full frame with a 19 MP DX crop mode for when you want to shoot more telephoto. It's the best of both worlds. And it shoots up to 9 fps. Full-frame 4K is pretty badass as well, but hopefully Nikon makes a mirrorless version of this soon with an EVF.
FYI Matt, You can sonewhat predict when the northern lights will happen. Monitor for solar flares/CME's and watch the K-index. Also, the sun has an 11 year sunspot cycle, right now were at the bottom of the cycle so not much activity to create dramatic northern lights, but its expected to peak again around 2022-2023, when there will be more flares and in turn, much more dramatic aurora activity. Just have to be patient a few more years
I think this is your best field trip so far, in terms of the images that you got. We have the D750 and the D500, so we don't need the 850 for our resolution uses.
I wanted a d850 but realized that my d810 is good enough, but I will supplement with a used d500 for wildlife. If I didn't already have the 810 I'd be on the 850, though!
@Matt Granger PLEASE PLEASE DO THIS FOR A7R III. We want to know how much it can withstand the tough environment and the real world usage for landscapes. Thank you :)
I’m surprised at the buffer issue you’re having. I haven’t had that issue at all shooting wildlife. Also, the white balance never went off on me unless I was a crazy lighting situation. I had natural light coming through a window with a tungsten light shining on my subject from above. Of course it didn’t know what to do then. But I’ve found the auto white balance and auto Daylight white balance to be spot on every time. The only other time I had an issue was when I forgot to switch to regular auto when I went inside.
I’d like to see some ISO invariance testing, shoot in manual, one photo 4 stops underexposed at ISO 100, one correctly exposed at ISO 1600. Bring up the exposure of the first file in post to the same exposure and compare noise levels. ISO invariant sensors are really useful as you can leave them at base ISO and keep the shutter and aperture where you need them, then adjust your exposure in post without auto-iso clipping random pictures
Great stuff Matt, nice watching these episodes, Nicely done with the D850, A little curious about something tho, you showed with higher iso that the WB would go a little crazy, i haven’t had that problem, do you think it might just be some of the d850 cameras?
Matt, Do a buffer test with the XQD card the only one in the camera. The D500 reacts the same way. The camera is only as fast as the slowest card . Like many others I leave the SD card slot empty on the D500 and plan to do so on the D850.
Very special review, liked the Icelandic animals and their personality with so much roaming freedom. Did not feel hurried when talking about location. Nice interesting rhythm during segments - liked seeing camera performance and inspiration it allows and does not interfere with during photography. Very controlled, balanced camera must have had controlled balanced maker -managers during development and production, rubs off ;)
Hi Matt. From what I understand, dynamic range is a property of sensor size with respect to photo-site density. Are you claiming that the files from this camera capture more information than its predecessors? I just want to make sure that I'm understanding you correctly.
A beautiful video! Must say I'm really liking the footage the Mavic has been capturing so far. As to the D850 - I wish it were more versatile in terms of the usable ISO range. As to the ocean incident: I guess most digital cameras would pack up in a similar fashion.

But people will want to have those features on so it'd be silly not to use those features
zagan1 Lol...pity we have to deal with uncivilized folks once you open yourself up to the net. Mr/Ms Zagan, please look at your mirror!
zagan1, you are a buffoon. None of the processing is required while shooting raw.
eseka2000 is 100% correct.
Dada Kaka
Of course the camera does processing in raw.
It'd never write an image to the sensor if that was the case.
All sensor require a processing chip or that sensor would do nothing, you have image smoothing to help reduce nr in the images even with no nr set it'd still do some as some pixels in the sensor can be dead and the processor can work around those problems.

To say the raw image is 0 processed is absurd.
This is a benchmark of how a camera review should be!!! Excellent blend of technical & experience being put forth...
I'm not going to be getting a D850 because I don't need one, but I do really like watching Field Tested. Nicely done, Matt.
I really appreciate how Matt makes a few comments about the D5 as well...The D5 is the king at fast action low-light with a slightly better AF performance compared to the D850 as Matt have shown us!
I have the D850, went out to Oregon.. it takes mind blowing detailed and beautiful rich tone photos..
I live in Oregon and I can't imagine being able to create better images than what my D810 gives me. I know the files are sharper under controlled conditions but Landscapes...?
I just got myself a D800e, have been wanting one for years :) D850 will be mine in another five years perhaps ;)
same here
High production quality! It felt like I was also watching a Nat Geo documentary on Iceland as well!
Icelandic horses are so curious and playful. Such a lovely creatures ❤️❤️
I pulled the trigger when it was first announced. Played the waiting game and watched all of your video's waiting for the day to come. Happy to say I've got mine! couldn't be happier! Thanks Matt for all of your hard work!
It was really hard to pay attention to the camera stuff because I was mesmerized by the stunning landscapes
Love the horses. You feed them carrots and sugar cubes. geeeh. lol That dog had that look too. Great as always.
Great video. I love these Field Tested videos. They are very detailed, and I enjoy watching how you test things in the field. Plus it's fun to watch you explore these places.

I appreciate that, thank you
Matt,
thanks a bunch for this excellent film, and a special thanks for recording it in HD, it's superb.

Another excellant review, loved the Iceland vinettes.

Robert Neill I think the Mavic pro drone did the best job, awesome footage from the sky, itching to get a drone, but do I really need one...
Robert Neill +1
Totally agree awesome job I just showed my wife and we now want to go to Iceland and as for the d850 if I wasn’t heavily invested in Canon it would be on my short list.
Loved the photo at 16:13 Looks like the horse it taking a photo of you taking a photo if it. Just brilliant
I love all your b-roll and great shots. Iceland is magical.
The horses are amazing! Really well done review.
Brilliantly shot, Matt, and beautiful to see. Thanks for sharing so many views.
Great review! This is the most enjoyable review I have seen for the D850. The field trip really made it special. D850 is out of my budget, but this video makes me want to visit Iceland!

The horse seems to like the fold-out screen. Thanks Matt.
Great review and tour of Iceland - you’re onto a great thing here with field tested. Look forward to future eps.
Gorgeous video. Iceland is definitely on the bucket list. For the photographer who wants one camera capable of "doing it all," there appears to be no better option than the D850.
Oh Matt, man! What a review. Love it! You're so easy going. Keep up the work: amazing shots (and b-roll!) and amazing editing. Cheers mate!
Gotta love that dog giving you the stink eye. 😝
Which he undoubtedly deserved!

My gosh your seal photos are amazing! Thanks for sharing this cool video.

@Matt I noticed you are now liking the articulating screen. :-) I remember you don't like it before
Excellent Matt, you amaze me how you can continue to step up your game. Great video to watch, very nice editing.
Very nice tour. Well done mate. Cheers ✌✌
Ha ha I LOVE the pic of the horse biting the camera
Matt's field tests are next-level.

Liked the horse nibbling the cable! Some great video recording there.
Hey Matt, still waiting for my D850 to arrive in country to replace my D800. Love this new format video, keep up the great work.
Really liking your new documentary style video. Great production
I think this is your best field trip so far, in terms of the images that you got. We have the D750 and the D500, so we don't need the 850 for our resolution uses.
Top Notch Photography Matt!
Matt, great video as always. Funny at times, it looked like the horses were the ones taking the pictures using the tripod. Thanks, very informative
Great video, good review...job well done Matt.
Matt Granger sir the video was really helpful and cleared many questions i had in my head!
Damnit Matt, I just got back from Iceland a month and a half ago and you're making me want to get on a plane tomorrow!
I like this concept. Wouldn't mind more videos of this type!

Some nice shots in there.
Thanks Matt, one of your best vids. to date. New laptop with a high res screen coming next week, so will look forward to a re-watch.
Damn! Compliments on the intro!
beautiful location, great camera and great lenses.. result is great of course.
Great location to shoot.
Awesome video Matt.
Congrats Matt, you made me want a D850. But more so I want to visit Iceland now!! Way more than I want a D850 :D
top quality production! couldn't skip a second.
I believe the big buffer can only be achieved using the battery grip with the pro battery to allow the camera go into "overclock" mode
I’m surprised at the buffer issue you’re having. I haven’t had that issue at all shooting wildlife. Also, the white balance never went off on me unless I was a crazy lighting situation. Well done Matt. I love the photo of the black church. Back in Australia and Sydney soon?
+Magnus Eriksson over xmas
Excellent Matt, thoroughly enjoyable.
Really like your work.....excellent review

Well nicely done review. I think this is the only unbiased review about D850 till date.
p.s Iceland is very beautiful.
Wonderful video. Great footage.
Intervalometer in silent mode
Even my 5dsr has the same
I bought a year back
Would love to see a comparison between 5dsr and d850
Great way to do a review! Very nicely produced, too.
Excellent post Matt, one of your best. Thanks.
fantastic shots and video from iceland - super Matt
This is my favorite series. Hope you keep them coming. Love the coverage of Iceland. What a amazing beautiful strange country.
very good content Matt very informative.
Great video with a lot of info (field test ) ,Mat Love the 850
Hi Matt. From what I understand, dynamic range is a property of sensor size with respect to photo-site density. Are you claiming that the files from this camera capture more information than its predecessors? I just want to make sure that I'm understanding you correctly.
Wow! One of your best videos. Great review and video of Iceland
A beautiful video! Must say I'm really liking the footage the Mavic has been capturing so far. As to the D850 - I wish it were more versatile in terms of the usable ISO range. As to the ocean incident: I guess most digital cameras would pack up in a similar fashion.
Awesome Matt
Nice nice video! thanks matt
Kittens > D850 test
Matt did you get more shots of those fur balls?
of course! Although I was more focussed on holding the kitties
Very interesting mix of review and travel vlog, super extra great
I believe that it was the same week that it was announced that Nikon clarifies that using the small RAW formats will cut the buffer. I don't know if it's in the manual or not, but Nikon says so in a couple of interviews. Funny enough if you need buffer use t12 bit full-size raw. Besides that issue, excelent review.
love the bird taking a shit at the end..lol, loved the video, ref the audio, its always been peaky, its the style am used too :-)
