    Good long term review guys! I'll list some of my favorite things about D850 when compared to D810 that usually don't get credit much at reviews;
    1. No magenta cast on shadows at high ISOs +6400 when shooting night scenes or skies
    2.Great auto white balance accuracy and addition of auto wb preset for natural light
    3. Automatic autofocus micro adjust. With high mpix sensor slight misfocusing is painstakingly obiouvs. I still prefer to manually check afma-values but this helps get close to the correct value and makes possible to do quick adjust on the field / vacation (Color of light can effect correct afma-value slightly, also ambient temperature due to tolerances changing.
    4. Screen resolution and live view experience is greatly improved as well
    5. Shutter mechanism slightly more stable for less shutter shock and possible to use Electronic first curtain shutter with other modes than MUP. Paired with addition of 0.2s and 0.5sec shutter delay helps to get blur free pictures with high quality glass.
    6. Better grip ergonomics

    • @timcastle1190
      @timcastle1190 6 лет назад

      I strongly agree with ergonomic. I don't use camera strap. I shoot event for 4 hours+ straight without having fingers pain.

    • @CameraMystique
      @CameraMystique 6 лет назад

      I agree about the WB more accurate than D810. I send for prints directly from the camera's jpg, especially when shooting Nikon or APO lenses. But here's another surprise I discovered recently while I was bitching about recent Zeiss purple fringing: the Fuji XH-1 with Fuji lenses has zero (0) purple fringing with Fuji lenses and slightly more pleasant colors and the most perfect shutter experience ever (and its battery sucks). Ah, there's no perfect camera, we have to fuse them somehow.

    I own both the D850 and A7RIII. Both are great cameras. Studio work, general photography and wedding receptions the Sony fares well if not better but when it comes to choosing a camera to bring for a crucial shoot i will choose the Nikon D850, the focusing is just more reliable and intuitive. I am able to trust the Nikon when it comes to focusing with very narrow DOF. I am also using the Nikon 105mm 1.4E, exceptional lens!

    • @AlbertVasquez4Homes
      @AlbertVasquez4Homes 6 лет назад +1

      CMJ1989 what are your thoughts of the af system compared to the A9 or A7iii? I own the A7RIII and it’s awesome. However, there are instances where I wonder if the A9 would of focused better

    • @CMJ1989
      @CMJ1989 6 лет назад

      Never owned the A9 but only had short duration of experience with it. A9 is pretty good but lacks the resolution and does not feel comfortable with heavy lenses without a grip.

    • @CMJ1989
      @CMJ1989 6 лет назад

      It's true. For portraits and non erratic motion the Sony seems to do better but is unable to catch up in certain situations. I think most people probably wouldn't tell a difference.

    • @V4D2
      @V4D2 6 лет назад

      so..in an event or on a wedding.. you'd still prefer the AF reliability on the Nikon ?
      What about focus acquisition in Low light ?
      I'm getting a Sony because i want the silent/electronic shutter.. and i want low light performance.
      But i'll cancel my order if i get confirmation that it will under-perform. So far.. that hasn't been the feedback i have been getting .
      Are we talking very slight differences..or significant differences here ?

    • @V4D2
      @V4D2 6 лет назад

      i love my D800E for portraits. Its a SLOW camera.. but in a controled scenario.. it shines!
      And 36MP is enough.. most of the times.
      Again... are we splitting hairs here.. or talking about significant differences here?
      Can you elaborate on those preferences you mentioned above ?
      Thanks
      PS: a great camera is always going to be a great camera.. no matter the year we're in.
      I've got a 20 year old 5MP Olympus.. and it's still great ! Shoots RAW files too !! ;)

    Even those who claim that the best camera is the one you have with you can't deny that the D850 is one of the most capable and versatile full frame bodies ever available. Within the first day of using this device on an assignment, I immediately deduced that it was the best DSLR I had ever used. I own the D810 and rented the D850. I thought I would miss the pop-up flash even though I rarely ever used it, it was good to know that I had that option to wirelessly trigger the Nikon CLS lights or have fill flash for walk around shots. The truth is, for the 4 days I tested the D850 I never once thought about the pop-up flash. The step focus is one of my favorite additions and the continued improvements with dynamic range.

    Every favorable camera review contains the following in the comments section:
    1. You must be sponsored by these guys
    2. It's not as good as MY camera
    3. It's too heavy (or light)
    4. It lacks one feature that the commenter feels is essential
    5. Everything by this brand sucks
    6. It's the photographer, not the equipment
    7. It's too expensive
    8. It's already obsolete
    9. The reviewer doesn't know what they are talking about when mentioning a deficiency because the commenter gets great results with that feature
    10. The reviewer doesn't know what they are talking about because the commenter can't get a feature to work well that the reviewer states is great
    And that's just the first ten I thought of off the top of my head. :)

    Nikon D850 IS the end of an era, you can feel it they made sure it was a happy ending by launching all the best F mount lenses and DSLRs they could like D7500, D500, D850 and D5
    This is also because Nikon (and Canon) are finally going full frame mirrorless at the end of this year with a new mount, new lenses for that mount, new AF system, etc. and hence won't have any time or money left to focus on DSLRs at a time when so many pros are switching to mirrorless full frame because of Sony alone

    • @marcd7332
      @marcd7332 5 лет назад +1

      I’ll keep buying DSLRs until they are completely dead, don’t see a reason to go mirrorless, and at lest now the battery sucks on mirrorless cameras and the lenses are too expensive, and yes I know you can use an adapter but instead of doing that I can use my DSLR

    I'm a mirrorless guy. Just switched over to an a7riii after spending over a year with MFT, and even I can acknowledge that the D850 is the best high resolution DSLR ever made. I did notice that occasionally my 24 to 70 mm lens will miss focus on eyes and subjects, not sure if it’s because it’s a third-party lens, Tamron, however my 70 to 200 mm Tamron does not miss hardly ever. I’ve tried AF fine tune but was curious if you ran into any problems with missing focus on a 24 to 70 lens when shooting?

    I've had 3 D850s (now 2) and the only way to produce a visibly sharper file than the D810 was on Gitzo + liveview + zacuto + Zeiss 135 APO and magnify 200%. The D850 does pull shadows better though in many cases if you ever need that much. The problem: No lab in the world can print this resolution, unless you print the size of your living room wall :-) :-)

Perfect that is... 130% score of another camera, is a perfect which actually is the same thing! In plain words, no difference to our mortal eyes. I mention this because, lots of people decide on a camera based on numbers, I am in many ocassions one of them too! After doing a 50 shot focus stack in my new macro studio today, I have to say after owning one since the release date, I'm still loving the D850 to bits, especially the built in focus shift shooting and silent mode electronic shutter. HDMI out to a tethered 32" 4K monitor (which is new to me) was amazeballs when framing and focusing. I use new Sigma Arts which weigh a ton (even on a D7200) and various auto focus Nikkors, but also 40 year old manual focus F mount lenses that still shine, like the 55mm f2.8 Micro Nikkor. It's a great system and a really adaptable body, with peerless image quality at 64 ISO for FF. A few niggles, as one would expect...the battery life on mine is not as good as I would have expected, despite the upgraded battery model. Video auto focus is still a joke, but no biggy for me as I'm not a videographer. The D850 overall is a pleasure to own and use...for me. Your requirements may differ and if so, Panasonic, Sony, Fuji, Hasselblad, or whatever will be your choice. Choice is good, anger is not.

      There are "Sony fanboys" and people who shoot Sony because Sony camera gets the job done. I am the latter who own an a7 and an a9, and I still have a D750 with a couple Nikon lenses when I need to shoot flash/macro/shoot through flicker. I will be upgrading to a D850 too when it drops to the price below $1500 used (like the price of D810) right now.

    • @333payaso
      @333payaso 6 лет назад

      I like your answer very logical. For what I do, dont need eye-AF, the weight is a non-issue, just low ISO(64) for the best Dynamic-Range, more than 24MP and Flash, plus great lenses selection

    • @shang-hsienyang1284
      @shang-hsienyang1284 6 лет назад

      About the dynamic range part though, the Sony a9 has a special trick that I have never seen a reviewer talked about. Set the shutter to electronics only (auto won't do it), setup the camera to +/- 1EV or above, and dial the camera in BRK mode. (Sorry for the lengthy setup but Sony cameras are illogical)
      Whenever you press the shutter immediately you have 3 images taken with no mirror (obviously) nor mechanical shutter vibration. If you use Lightroom these images are almost perfectly aligned even if you shoot handhold. It's easy to achieve extremely high dynamic range with this trick.

    • @333payaso
      @333payaso 6 лет назад

      yes, but that is not DYNAMIC-RANGE, it is more like HDR. And you can do the same thing with almost any camera that have bracketing(D7000/D7100/D7200/D500/D700/D750/D800/D800E/D810/D850)

    Maybe the best all around DSLR ever, but there are other cameras that are better at individual aspects of photography. Nice to get a single camera that can do jsut about everything at least well enough.
    It might also be the last great DSLR, as Sony has really changed the mirrorless game to the point that I feel that is where the industry going.

      Sigh, do I really have to do this breakdown? You are so convinced that the D850 beats all cameras in all categories even at the individual levels that a list needs to be made? It's probably the best "all in one" camera out there. Jack of all trades, gets the job done in ways that you would probably not need another system. But even the best Jacks have to compromise somewhere. If anyone could make that list better than anyone else, it's Tony Northrup not me. I can list a few things here, but I don't know the systems as well as Tony, it's why I watch all his videos LOL! All I was saying is that it is the best at some things, but there are other cameras that are better at some individual things (A9 20 fps no blackout would be one, if I have to give one).
      I don't want to argue something that is not really worth arguing (wasn't even making an argument). I feel that "the best camera" is the one that can do what you need it to do best. That is no one camera for everything, there are better cameras at certain things than others, there are some that are the best at nothing and still are great. The D850 is the best at some things, and more than adequate at pretty much everything (hence the best all around). For the things that matter most, that is up to the user and their intended use. For everything else, there's Mastercard. (thought I would throw some levity in at the end). Also, nice video, thanks for making it, forgot to say that previously. If a D850 was in my budget, I would gladly shoot with one.

    Best camera ever? For some, probably. For me - no. I photograph wildlife almost exclusively and walk about 7 hours a day with my camera kit. Though an undoubtedly brilliant camera, for me, the D850 and Nikon glass is just too heavy. Another, even bigger issue for me, is no presets on the top plate dial. I have just swapped my D500 system and Olympus system for one based around a Sony A7III. My D500 did not have presets but my EM1 mark II had three incredibly customisable presets. If I took out just one camera for the day it was the EM1.2 - just because of the presets. My A7III has two presets, not as customisable as the EM1.2 but pretty good all the same. I am able to carry my A7III + Sony 100 - 400mm + Sony 90mm macro and Meike 320 mini speedlite without issue. No more aching hip and back. My new system also produces fabulous image quality.

      pete draper to heavy? Maybe hit the gym more often and gain some strength? I never have any problems with the weight of the gear/glass and don’t understand that people are always talking about it in reviews. I always skip that part. Its so boring to watch fat or skinny people talk about the weight of a camera being an issue.
      And presets in your camera?😂 Come
      on man. The D850 is a professional camera not a consumer camera. You want to edit your images properly? Shoot raw and edit your photos in lightroom/photoshop for maximum results.

As soon as you throw on a g master 24-70 on the Sony the weight and size are pretty much equal as far as carrying them goes. I love both cameras for different reasons but if I had to choose only 1 I would bring the d850 every time.

      Ruben Baars. It always amuses me when certain crap hats go out of their way to insult others. I was a soldier for 11 years, carrying a heavy pack plus a battle rifle (not a light assault rifle) and ammunition. I then became a police officer and trained as a specialist PSU officer, this time carring a 14lb shield for hours on end. I have always worked out and practised martial arts, so don't try it on with me. It is obvious from your post that you have no concept of how to set up a complex preset, in order to switch between a stationary subject and one which is fast moving in the blink of an eye. No doubt you have missed a great many shots due to your own, so called, professionalism. Lightroom won't help you when you taken a shot at 1/250th when the subject required a shutter speed of 1/2500th.

    Nice seeing a review after the new gear hysteria has died down. Got my D850 in January. It is rugged and reliable as well as delivering fantastic picture quality. PS: Is it that hard to keep the U1 and U2 custom modes on the high end bodies, though ?
      I'd like to know what is on Nikon's designers and engineers' minds.. when they go like -> "_ Oh.. this is not the D750... Lets lose the ''lame'' custom modes! "
      What ?
      Idiots!

    Just a fantastic review. My partner and I shoot every kind of photography including weddings. I have a7r3 with lots of great glass. she has the Nikon system with great glass. We have the best of both worlds. I’m not giving up my Sony system but if I had to I would go Nikon and still be joyful and slay it.

      Do you use LR? If not, you should try it. It brings the raw files to the same color regardless of camera. We've done side-by-side tests and you see no difference in color at all, regardless of which camera you use.

      yes I use it but as a wedding and event shooter ,found the processing the canon raw files very easy and saved me color correction ,I had Nikon d810 in past but same issue ,also as an event and portrait shooter I love the canon 35mm f1.4L II ,it is perfect lens ,the nikon version in not good ,and the sigma suffers from autofocus issues as I rented for the d810 thank you for reply

    Right NOW Sony has become the number 1 seller of fullframe digital cameras in the world, Not Nikon, Not Canon. The A7RIII had more camera of the year awards for 2017 than the D850. And in the month of April the Sony A7III was the best selling camera in Japan, not the D850. The lousy video autofocus of the D850 ,and lack of EVF ,and lack of true silent shooting ,and lack of 93% focus coverage, and lack of IBIS, and lack of focus peaking would all be a dealbreaker for me. I do subscribe here, but for all the good work that Tony and Chelsea do, they always seem too busy to respond to comments of any nature . They just move on and let us debate it without any feedback. A safe way never to answer any opposing point of view, unless the topic is in their next video. I guess they have just gotten too big for that. A shame. Cheers

      Sorry to burst your bubble, but you're wrong. Canon is still number one in total sales of full frame DSLR's - Sony is number 2. AND you're wrong on the issue of the Northrup's responding to comments. I've had them respond to my comments and I've seen them respond to others as well. Obviously, they can't respond to everyone, all the time.

      The D750, image quality wise, beats competitors at same price point (although it lacks some modern features like 4K video, touch screen and so and so). People keep pointing out that the A7 III is far superior (and it is!) but it costs almost double (at least in Europe). D750 right now would be (in my opinion) one of the best ways to enter affordable full frame photography, the sensor is a marvel for the price and lens selection is top.

    • @Gundolf300
      @Gundolf300 6 лет назад +1

      Iaintclonitwasmybro
      Have actually been looking at the d750 for quite some time. You can get it for a bargain used. The only problem is (except that it's big and clumsy as hell) is the faulty shutter mechanism. You basically need to get one that either has the the shutter replaced already or a new one. And new they aren't really that price worthy compared to the competition.

    • @Gundolf300
      @Gundolf300 6 лет назад

      Gideon Heydemann Sure it is. That is if you DO paid work and not hobbying around. Want I meant was that even for hobby photographers and entusiasts Nikon used to have THE shit. Not so much anymore. And what's real sad about it is that they don't even intend to compete in that market anymore. Not one bit.

      Nomriel seems like everyone wants a piece of the mirrorless world. Sony have been offering great features that no other company has. I would even say the a7iii is a better camera. Theres a new afc lense that's a 2.8 constant 24-70mm for only 800usd. Not only that but sony offers clear image zoom (amazing) couple that with a aspc mode that 24-70 turns into ummm I think like 280mm. Granted your using a micro 4/3rd sensor size at that point. But if it's for low low low light it still produces good looking pictures.

Trying to figure out why I grabbed a Nikon P1000 as well other than the excuse to my wife that its good for security on the farm 3000mm? Should I start a rumour that the 'Northrup 900' is due. With all that knowledge why not? Cheers from Australia.

    I don't know if you are promoting the sale of this camera but a week ago I bought it and used it with a nikkor 50 mm f/1.8G lens to see if it has a good shot in low light inside a home and I was not satisfied, the images are not very good but I took photographs on the streets at night and the images were not very good either, I had to return the camera and I don't see much difference just in the video shots but I am a photographer and I only study photographs for my hobby and the one I have always used is Canon 5DSR and I has given very good results

      That's funny.. A canon falls on its face after 3200 iso... The D850 shoots in close to pitch black and 26k iso is clean! Even the jpeg files at 26k are usable outta camera!

    I did not test the D850 so i cannot have an opinion like the most here.I own a D4 and D810 but i think does'n worth to upgrade for the moment...Even with the 36mp of my D810 i still use the D4 every time because of the low noise in high iso and also way smaller files and better handling...The grip which comes separated from the camera will never feel as natural as the D4 or 1DX Mark 2... Good thoughts though NorthUp's

    Indeed a great DSLR. But will it be the last 800 series DSLR Nikon makes? With Nikon's new focus on Mirrorless, I suspect Nikon will have one more full frame DSLR in the D5 range. Much like in 2001 when the film camera SLR ended and DSLR's began, Nikon discontinued making film SLRs. Will there be an end to the DSLR in 3 to 4 years?

    I have found out, turning off the phone’s Bluetooth will allow the WiFi from the Nikon work a lot better. Where it shines is the transfer speed.
    This means for iPhone users, especially on iOS 10 and later. You have to go into Settings-> Bluetooth to switch it off.

    Nice round up, looking at a D850 myself shortly (Selling the D500 and D800 to consolidate)
    I shoot sports and honestly never use 3d tracking - more concerned about AF speed and accuracy than tracking.
    One other factor that rarely gets mentioned on the buffer - the A7riii may have a bigger buffer but takes an enternity to clear (especially on the 2nd non-UHSII slot)

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  6 лет назад

      Good point about the buffer clearing. When the d850 buffer does fill, it hardly slows down, whereas the a7riii almost grinds to a halt.

    • @blakeparry1983
      @blakeparry1983 6 лет назад

      for someone who shoots raw+raw action - the lack of 2nd UHSII slot immediately rules out the A7riii as an option for me
      A7riii also drops to 12bit at the highest frame rate so it kind of cheats the buffer test too... important to note when comparing apples to apples
