    I have the D500 and D800 so should have a flying start, but acquiring the D850 sends me back to school. What a camera! Instruction books always confuse me and if I look for some genuinely informed video presentations, the videos are mostly never complete and tend to be unstructured.. So your clear and very comprehensive run through is a dream “go to “ for me. Very many thanks....many hours of frustrating hunting for information has been saved.

    you have the reviews that in 20 years people can go back and still find it very helpful, because its actually informative, unlike many who just praise the new gadget without any depth.

    Maarten, I recall viewing your review of the Nikon D500. I indicated then that it was unequivocally the best review of the camera I had seen. Your review help cement my decision to purchase the D500. This time around, I went ahead and purchased the D850 to replace my D810 before seeing your review of the D850. Yet, reviewing it now, I find it just as informative, well thought out, superbly presented, and quite frankly yet one of the finest reviews I've seen. Thank you again.

    Thank you for explaining the use of the Nikon Settings. I laughed when you said, “If you can remember how you got to that setting.” That was a relief to hear. I thought I had a bad memory.

    What an amazing review and tutorial. Amazing. I own and use the Nikon D750 and see no reason to upgrade, (I'm no pro and the outlay is simply unjustifiable), however this is a dream camera! Thank you so much Maarten. You truly are the best reviewer on the web!

    The 200 burst limit is so the camera doesn’t destroy itself in a bag if the button gets held down. Apparently that’s Nikons official response.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      If that’s the official answer, it’s clearly bogus. For the photographer who forgets to turn off his camera, the preventative setting should be somewhere in the thousands.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. I feel that video is an insufficient tool to convey image quality of a camera with more than 8Mp, so I generally leave that to the web reviews - CNet, dpreview and dxomark.

      @@MaartenHeilbron 4 years is a fairly long time between updates for a camera model that isn't the flagship. If I might venture a guess I'd say an update to the 850 is not to far off. I'd like to see better movie functionality an expeed 6 image processor and two XQD slots instead of just one and last but not least a bump to 10fps in CL mode. An 850s (860???) if you would. I'm not connected to Nikon in any way except as a user of their cameras and lenses.

    Mr. Heilbron you've just earned my respect, (above all), my like and my subscription. You sir along with a few (no more than a few unfortunately), other presenters, are a breath of fresh air in a world full of garbage videos in YT. I am amazed by how methodical, clear , precise and agonizingly factual your review process is, and also loved your scientific approach to the more technical aspects of this presentation. I really was very pleasantly surprised , as I thought that I have seen it all before.
    If I had to rate your review on the D850 I would happily give it a flawless 10 out of 10. Great staff thanks for sharing, keep em rolling and we are here to enjoy, thanks again and god bless.

      I could live with that.
      I think I read that Nikon really wants the best EVF experience on its upcoming mirrorless cameras.... so maybe they will copy the idea that the best EVF is one that is PAIRED WITH AN OVF.
      Or maybe standalone OVFs could plug in and integrate with the mirrorless EVF cameras as add-on pieces?

    Amazing review, love it. That's the kind of review people should do it, not pushing anyone to buy anything, but showing with great details what's good, what's not so good, and so on. I really enjoy your review, thank you. I don't know if I miss, if not, that would be the only thing missing, how bad is to work with the files, since I assume 46mb would creat monster files and that might generate a problem, like a new computer, external drives, etc... I'm don't know if it is the case, I'm just assuming, but that could be a big factor some people, since it would increase substantially the investment, it would be for me.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Yup, they're big files - but really, the cost of memory cards, or an additional hard drive should be affordable if you're buying this camera.

      Well, I just saw your review on the Fuji XH1 and since I sold all my equipment, I might buy Fuji instead. Not sure yet, I still suspect that Nikon will announce either or both, APS-C and Full frame mirrorless camera and if they follow the steps of the D850, it will be the camera. I use Nikon since the F3hp, when I jumped from my Minolta. Same thing happens back then, I manage to sell all my equipment to a very good price. So now, I'm again free to decide where to go next and if the XH1 is as good on real life as it is on paper, it will probably be my next move. I want to wait for Nikon, because I really want full frame, but if there's now announcement by the CP+2018, I'll the Fuji. Fuji has being a great temptation since the XT-1. I love the system because of the lenses, they are gorgeous, I love the dials, Ergonomics it just feel way more home then with the new DSLR's.
      Thanks again for your work, I really enjoy your reviews.

    Nlce job I've been looking at the 850 . Nikon has come out with two mirrorless but they dont seem to be replacements for the 850 so far unless your into video. I think this is a choice Nikon made so that the next mirrorless will be more on par to the 850 or surpass it. Whether that camera shows its' face near xmas or sometime next year hard to know since I dont follow Nikon that closely. I know it is still one step behind. My guess would be the next camera will be built stronger have a higher 50 mp or higher chip. Dual mem card slot and fix some of the complaints on the other two. So I figure the z6-7 are the transitional models. Since I am not a pro the 850 should last me a few years fine then if the next best mirrorless is out I can trade it in. Thank you for the review.

    Maarten..... a question for you, does this camera have a factory reset button facility so basicaly if you make a mess of setting the camera up, you can revert all the settings back as to when the camera came out of the box? excellent presentation and review!!!!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 лет назад

      Not a full reset as some do (so you don't reset the time, the wifi, etc), but there are several menu sections where a return to default settings can be done.

      I appreciate the kind words, thanks. Well, yes and no - if Nikon gets it right, it could be fabulous - on the other hand not many first generation products solve all the problems. I'm wait and see on this one. However, I would have no hesitation in purchasing the D850.

    Great review; thanks. I subscribed. Question: If I shoot a picture in FX mode and crop, is quality the same as shooting in DX mode and not cropping? Also, what is advantage of shooting video in DX instead of FX mode? Again, thanks!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your kind words, and your subscription. Yes, doing a manual crop from an FX image is (more or less) the same as using the camera to crop to DX - you are creating a lower resolution image from lower pixels. The advantage of shooting in DX mainly applies to video, where with a minimal loss of quality (even 4K is only 8 megapixels) you can extend the reach of your lens. For stills, I'd always prefer to capture everything from the sensor and crop as needed in editing. Hope this helps.

  • @therampanthamster

    love the review - just to chime in on the reason that a burst rate limit is put in: presumably this is to stop your camera actually shooting thousands and thousands of frames if you accidentally leave it on in your bag and something is pressing against the shutter release button? That's what i always figured any way!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words - I will note that you said “thousands and thousands”. The limit is 200, so ...

    • @therampanthamster
      @therampanthamster 7 лет назад

      yes - exactly. The reason it's 200 is because that's enough to keep people happy but not so many that in case the shutter gets pushed down in your bag that the camera just keeps taking photos over and over.. In the video you said you were "still not sure why a limit is needed". So i'm fairly certain that's why the limit is needed :D

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      If that is the reason, and I’ll note that no other manufacturer seems to be concerned about this, the limit could certainly be larger than the 100-200 limit imposed here.

    • @therampanthamster
      @therampanthamster 7 лет назад

    • @MaartenHeilbron

    i shoot with sony, canon and nikon bodies and they are all great cameras that give excellent results, however my sony SLT A mount camera bodies have two major features that lead the pack, first the Electronic viewfinder that allows you to see the finished product before you actually shoot the image which opens the door for many many other features and second is the body stabilization...........i shoot for pleasure....i want to thank you for all your help..

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      There are many cameras - all mirrorless cameras for example - that provide the electronic viewfinder function you describe. And there are also many cameras that provide stabilization, optical, in-body and a combination. I would agree those are interesting and important features for many photographers. Thanks for your note.

    Having these videos is great for future reference. Seeing as though most early digital cameras don't have such breakdowns and definitely not this high quality.
    Leaving a Nikon in its ON position uses next to no power, so leaving it on, you can have battery display and it's always ready instantly. Simply leave all meter reset options to default ie, direction pad.

      @@MaartenHeilbron Nope, you can still do it with mirrorless. Maybe not other brands but definitely Nikon.
      If you use LV and have changed the limit to unlimited or VF always On, then yes, it'll drain. But in it's default settings, shouldn't be a problem. It's the equivalent power draw of a Quartz watch when sleep, in the On position. When I had my Z50, I also turned on airplane mode just in case. Maybe experiment but I can tell you I've had the same experience on a D200, D300, D3s, P7700, D5100, DF, and Z50 since 2005.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words. It's more than OK, but as a video shooter - and I don't mean to imply that the D850 isn't a more than capable video camera - I prefer mirrorless, which seem to be happier to shoot video than a DSLR.
      I'm not convinced of any need to have 40+megapixels, or full frame, so If you were to put all three on the table in front of me, and tell me they were the same price, I'd ask if I could have the A7 III instead.
      That said, If I owned a D850, I would not be trading it in for either the A9 or the A7R III. But that would be true of all three.

    I have a few questions, and I'm sure you have the right answers in stock!
    1. When SnapBridge receives the pictures from the D850, is it only possible to transfer .jpeg's, or are you able to transfer RAW files too?
