I often get asked what KTM can do to fix the gap between what the 390 Adventure does and what we expect it to do. First, the SW suggests that the ideal 390 Adventure would split into two parts. One that does touring really well and another that does off-road really well. Sort of how the Rally Kit turns the Xpulse 200 from a casually good off-roader to an excellent, far more serious off-road machine. Why it cannot be done with this generation of the Adventure is mostly to with the frame itself (which is why I keep saying 2025, the model change is a crucial milestone for this motorcycle). We need more suspension travel and more ground clearance to make this as much of an off-roader as the 790 or 890 Adventures. Maybe even a 21" front wheeled model! If you sacrifice the idea of off-roading, then the bones of a good tourer are actually in the 390 Adventure. I'd be fine with the 19" front wheel -it has the utility of handling bad roads and flatter trails better. But what you really need is suspension that allows the 390 Adventure to settle down and do _a lot more_ than the 390 Duke or equivalent on Indian roads (implying a mix of surfaced but bumpy roads). This is what I think the adjustable suspension, had it been standard from the beginning, offered riders. And now, the SW's spoked wheels to me, are a far smaller utility than the adjustable suspension. And the more I rode the SW, the more I concluded that the standard 390 A should _not_ have anything but adjustable suspension today.

I got my 390 ADV last year. Been having a hoot on our roads with it cuz of the engine , the longer- than-Duke suspension travel and the accomodating seats. It's comfortable enough (even 2 up, provided the pillion isn't overweight) on long rides and is engaging on the twisties and more than capable of mild off roading. It fits my requirements pretty well. The only thing I wish was different was my 5 foot 6 height and the exhaust note. It might not be the best at any one thing but for someone who enjoys more than one type of riding and doesn't have the budget for 4 different bikes (for cities, canyons, highways and off road), the 390 ADV is a great pick in my opinion.

Shumi, I rented a KTM 390 for the spiti circuit, rode like a maniac... and I loved it. Especially coming from a Tiger 800 at home, I loved the light weight nimbleness. It is still a very good bike and can be recommended to most of the riders (tourers.). I liked your analysis on the seat height/suspension/frame. You have not gone overboard like the most other reviewers, who just give gospel. You have actually backed your views with analysis. On more suggestion, in Motoinc videos (except this one), your presentation style changed... I personally miss your earlier involved analysis... may be change of style is not needed

This used to be a dream machine for me because of 3 reasons, I can tour, It's cheap to maintain, It was reasonable comfortable for luggage and pillion!
But life changed - pillion went out of the picture.
Suddenly - 4.2Lacs on road started to look steep, (middle class boy troubles).
Got something really reasonable as a Used Vstrom 250 and I am very happy with the new found ability of it to really tour. It fits my single bike garage perfectly. It takes me to office - takes me to weekend twisties - takes me out on highways at reasonable 90-100 KMPH (did a 1700Km ride recently to understand that bike well and I was impressed AF).
Moral of the story- wanted to wait for Himalayan 450 but that is a long way away and I think it'll also take a while for RE to sort out its niggles from the first batch. So maybe another 2 years until I buy another machine, until then my recently acquired 250SX should serve me well. Btw shumi's advice on used machines and vstrom videos helped me a lot.

That being said, (and this comes from a place of deepest love) I feel the background wall can be done a smidge better maybe. Its good now, but I think it could've been done better (but hey that's just my opinion). Specifically I feel the pastel white and pale blue: instead of this a plain dark wall with a better visible logo might've looked a tad bit better (even though I understand that a plain wall wouldn't have as much personality as the current one)

But having ridden both of them, I knew I made the right choice bcz the 390 is also a phenomenal tourer if not better and feels at home in the twisties which is much more usable in the city too. Couldn't afford to wait for next year's adv's as I am not one of those who will jump to the first batch to buy and regret with all the issues I would have to live with, and did not have another 6 to 8 months to wait for the second improved batch of 2025 KTM adv's. Moreover I only do touring and already have a separate bike for the city commute.

I recently purchased the standard 390 ADV in March 2023 and completed a ride from Mumbai to Leh and back ( With pillion and luggage). The suspension in the initial days felt uncomfortable compared to Himalayan and GS310 but once I got used to it along with the right preload setting, The suspension doesn’t feel like a bother anymore and once you are past that, The package that this KTM offers with the space in the saddle for two, The luggage carrying capacity, The features, The power, The ease of servicing it anywhere in India at a cheap cost start to grow on you. At this point, This is the only worthwhile upgrade for a person who has owned a 200cc bike for last 6 years. Speaking of upcoming competition, Looking at how the current Himalayan and other 350cc models are being priced, I don’t think Royal Enfield will be able to significantly undercut this KTM in price and I don’t think it will match the engine performance of the 390 because then it will be precariously close to the 650cc engines output and I wouldn’t do that if I were RE. I am just waiting for these bikes to launch and the fun to begin( with the comparos)!

Let me start by stating my biases: I own one of these (2022), I have ridden it hard across Ladakh (2500 km in 14 days - In on and off-road conditions and rode up a 18K ft mountain without a road with not even a puncture), I am the 20% that uses it for 'what its made for', and I love the damn thing. Now to my thoughts, (1) for a set of folks (MI) who keep saying don't look at the specs but ride it for yourself), I found it strange this video kept emphasising a comparison to bikes that don't exist in the Indian market, I get the KTM ADV DNA is not there but its no dud. (2) Ride the bike and see what a lot of fun it is, if the likes of an Ouseph Chacko (5.7-5.8) or his ilk can get stuff out of this machine I would think the rest of us have a lot to learn and squeeze as much if not more out of this machine. I am 5.8, its a tall bike, just learn how to ride a tall bike, trust me its a better thing to do than be afraid, and you'll be a better rider for it. (3) The ground clearance is 200MM vs a 220 on most standard ADVs (that's 2 cm) (can't imagine a situation on road where this is meaningful and in an off road situation I would say learn to jump the bike or wheelie in a slow speed safely, you'll be infinitely better as a rider and look cooler to boot. (4) KTMs are horribly stally at low gears, frantic and vibey at high speeds, that's what you are buying, its not a welcoming bike but its fun and for some types of personalities it is the bike that'll keep you honest for a long time (by honest I mean you need to be focussed and skill up continuously on various fronts, get classes from an off road school- it'll really help, I have and its such a thrill to be able to control a unruly machine) (5) There are no perfect bikes and all assessments are subjective (the two reviewers have never spared an opportunity to remind us of that even though this episode didn't give the model much love). However, at the price, given its weight, true capability (this is a function of you and the bike) and low cost of repairs and replacements its a great (all-round) gateway drug and I rate this higher than the Duke in that. Would I have liked the SW and Adjustable suspension on my bike, for sure. Do I feel like shit about that, for sure. Will I get the upgrade, I sure will!
    That said.
Cheers to MotorInc, keep the weird ASMR-y chats going. Ride safe and ride hard, Peace!

I was initially waiting for Hero and Royal enfield to come out with their 400 CC machines but I just got tired of waiting. I am so glad I bought the 390 adventure X and saved the 60k. My main motive is to tour on this motorcycle (sometimes with a pillion) and not do any off-roading until and unless absolutely necessary. Being a 6' tall guy I have no problem with the seat height, but the main issue I have is the vibrations. I even changed the horribly shaped mirrors to husqvarna's but they still vibrate so much so that I just need to turn my head to check behind me. Other than that, really happy with the purchase. Coming from avenger 220, this 390 engine is just something else.

I also got a ADV X recently. After first service the vibrations have settled down to an extent. The bike does not like to go slow. I felt the engine smoothens out a little bit when revs climb. Overall I feel it is a vibey engine.
The power is something. The first time I gave it full throttle, I was in 3rd or 4th mid revs. I was almost knocked back and came close to falling off the bike. I was not expecting such a sudden strong pull. I am coming from a Svartpilen. The 390s character is very different from the 250s. It does not feel sane or sensible. Roads conditions change n having a average setting that works evenly is what x offers. The motor is tuned to suit Adv riding demands. I don't know to what extreme it can go for now it is doing flawlessly what I want it to. No TC keeps the riding experience Organic

Buy the bike - Not because it is the best bike out there in the segment : But because it’s the best for you right now !!
My only requirement (when I was doing the bike hunt) was to
    1. Tour (700-800kms a day)
    2. Pillion comfort ( I ride with pillion all the time )
    3. Spacious ( Can carry all sort of luggage : Tailbag + Saddle + Tank Bag)
In 2022 , there weren’t many options out there.. took the risk & went with this 390 adv
    Best decision ever 🙌
Bottom line : with almost 400kgs on board .. it cruised smoothly at 110-120kmph giving 30kmpl at still enough juice left to reach 130-135 for over takes
If that’s not cool.. not sure what is..
P.S no hate to Shumi & Karthikeya.. I love you guys..

I test rode the 390 ADV a few days back and my opinion if it still remains unchanged as the one from a year back. It feels like its going to do touring and off-roading really well. But all that fades away the moment you start riding it. 😅

same. test rode it and all my built up excitement of the 390adv fell flat. suspension was no where near the xpulse200 and the low end grunt was so bad that I could clearly see the bike sitting idle at home as I'd prefer to take the car or cycle for anything other than tours.
I guess it's wait and watch mode, wouldn't mind an xpulse400 with better cruisability or a much lighter and faster Himalayan.

I also had the same opinion on the quick shifter in my 390 Adventure, it never worked smoothly in my initial days of ownership. When it worked, it worked like magic, and when it doesn't, I felt it was ruining the whole mood. Infact, I turned the QS option off in my bike for months.
But later a thought came, as I had paid for the whole package and somehow I have to figure this out. 😂 With constant practice and experiments, I got that sweet spot where it would work smoothand now I'm happy with the QS.
The spark cut off is only for a split second when the contact comes to shift lever and we have to shift through the same time. Its working for me in all the gears up and down, only thing is we have to maintain the RPM between 4-5s. The QS works like charm for me now and I use the clutch only for b2b traffic.
I guess it will work for everyone once we start to live with it and figure it out on how to find that sweet spot to shift.
I'm one of the those users who does mid level off road and uses it mainly for touring, so the tube tyres in SW is a bit concerning. Hope KTM will bring an option to choose the parts to be replaced than getting a new model from them. Great insights as usual!

As an owner of the ADV 390 Standard variant, I must say that the TC was extremely intrusive at first, but for almost 3 Years of owning the 390. KTM has pumped out regular updates and has solved major issues with the bike, like the low bottom end torque, TC is not as intrusive, Riding modes, and the best part it, My ADV 390 has had a butter smooth QS from the start, and over the time with ECU updates the QS has only gotten smoother and slicker with both up and downshift to the point I forget that the clutch even exists, and after 26000+ kilometers of Touring+Off roads,+ commuting, the only major mod I've done is getting the adjustment rear suspension of the SW variant, other than that I've never been disappointed with the Adventure 390 ❤

The KTM 390 ADV is amazing and extremely versatile. Understand that one needs to spend enough time with the bike to make a connection.
I come from the Himalayan and this truly has been an upgrade for me. Yes, you'll need to unlearn a lot when you make this upgrade, whilst having a ton of fun.
All the electronics are just icing. The Quickshifter+ works flawlessly, the suspension is perfect and the other electronics are just well calibrated. Once you make the connection, you'll feel all these aids working with you, and that way you'll be able to get from this bike than any other in the market currently.

    1. The QuickShifter+ works like a charm for me. I'm not sure why you say it's iffy.

Have been riding the Adv 390 for 2 years, and yes I do agree with your points its not an all right out off roader, which riders still go ahead and use for, got amazingly skilled guys thrashing the machine all around in off road conditions. Other point about being a tourer can be argued, like this bike IMHO is an amazing bike for long hauls, I believe its just the suspension and seat ones body needs to get used to no taking away the fact that the rebound does smack you butt, however if one finds out the speed to go through the rough patch than its more fun than pain, once loaded the suspension works like dream but still the element of harsh rebound does stay in some scenarios. On of my biking buddies took my bike for a day and ended up buying the bike or say I tricked him into getting one 😁. But we are a bunch of happy chimps doing everything that bike can like going into corners with good speeds and lean angles, doing so off-roading (though we regard XPulse to be the Indian ace, not himalayn just be of its weight factor) and touring. However, if someone gets excited to buy this bike looking at me my points are clear, 1. This is not your daily commuter bike which can pull at any RPM without shifting gears one needs to be precise 2. Do not buy this bike if you just going to do a one day or overnight ride or breakfast ride coz other bikes would be better off doing that thing even an FZ can, 3. Do not buy this bike if you not gonna ride it often that would be waste of money, like you got a mile muncher standing on a side stand and into cover.
All that said, this one is more for an experienced rider and a person serious into riding, if not best, but a bike you will appreciate every time you ride it, this bike takes all kinds of thrashing and does not disappoints, btw SHUMI is right just wait for the 2025 Adv390 hope KTM covers other loopholes with the current gen.
But I am just a happy owner of the Adv390 and the other upgrade I can think of is the 2025 Adv390, beacuse I am very much clear about my use, that would be mostly touring and one day rides with a minimum range of 400 kms. And this bike is enough for our conditions at the max you can go for 650CC anything above that logically is waste of money, but as a gearhead is a logical dream to go for 😁

Finally someone spoke about how an Adv x and the SW variant rides. Yes said it damn straight, the X is much more sharper and crisp while riding than the SW variant. I certainly doubt the reliability of the spoke wheels put together. I am quite happy with my Adv x. Got some money to put on some Accesories on my bike and buy me some adventure gears as well. There is no such actual use of traction control orquick shifter in an ADV or the TFT screen as such. I would have been really happy if cornering ABS was there in the adv X but it is quite manageable to be honest. It all really matters on who rides the motorcycle. Anyways happy to see guys come out of your own together. Good luck for your future adventures, and I hope to see you guys anytime if possible. Cheers.😁

Upgrading from a Himalayan, the first thing I noticed was the bottom end. Changing the front sprocket with the Duke 250 15-tooth one makes it much better to ride. But the vibes in the footpegs and the weird suspension settings doesn’t feel right. So, now I have one more thing to fix my ADV 390, ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSIONS !

I watched the discussion, and I must say, it's intriguing to see such diverse opinions about the KTM 390 Adventure. While some channels praise it, others criticize its features like the lack of adjustable suspension, seat height, and traction control.
However, what really caught my attention was the comparison with the Honda CB500X and BMW 310 GS. It's surprising to see that the Honda, which comes at a significantly higher price, still lacks fully adjustable suspension, traction control, and spoke wheels, limiting its off-road capabilities. On the other hand, the BMW 310 GS also falls short in terms of advanced electronics and adjustable suspension.
Given these points, I can't help but wonder if there's a fair balance in the reviews. It seems like the KTM 390 Adventure is being judged quite harshly for its base model features, while other bikes with similar limitations are still being praised.
For the price range whatever they have given in electronics no brand is giving, these features are there in mid weigh adventure bikes.
I'd love to hear from the reviewer about the criteria used for evaluating these bikes and why certain aspects are considered deal-breakers for the KTM but not for others. It's essential to provide a fair assessment to help riders make informed decisions.
What do you all think about this comparison? Let's have a healthy discussion about these motorcycles and their strengths and weaknesses!

I had watched this video when it premiered last year and listening to both of you, I had absolutely made up my mind that I’ll NEVER purchase a KTM Adv 390.
Skip to Jan 2024, I gifted myself an Adv 390X for my birthday 😂
Honestly, you guys are right about everything you said - The suspension is stiff, the seat is ridiculously high, the low end torque is almost non-existent, lacks an Adv level suspension travel. But, I still chose the motorcycle because when I test rode I instantly connected with the character of the motorcycle - Flawed, yet charming ❤
The feeling of the engine settling down after all the huff & puff below 4000 rpm was so special that I can’t explain it 🤩
I’ve clocked 6,500 kms so far and not once did I feel I made a mistake by choosing this over the Scrambler 400X or the Himalayan 450 (that I test rode before the KTM ADV 390 X)
Everytime I ride the motorcycle, whether it’s 3 kms to a nearby shop, 30 kms to office or even 600 kms to Goa, I am excited to rev the engine and feel the grunt.
I revisited the video today, because it showed up once again as a recommendation in RUclips and after watching it i was reminded what I wrote at the beginning of this comment 😊

I rode the 390x from Bangalore to Yelagiri with my partner as pillion. Covering approx 400km. The takeaway is the rear seat. It is substantially spacious and has room to reposition oneself while on a long stretch. Comfort felt supreme. Myself as a rider, I thoroughly enjoyed the response of the motor without the intervention of electronics. Be it the highway, the sactuary, the twisties while climbing uphill, it never felt stressed especially with a pillion.
The bike has a lot of presence on road. Despite the size of it, the bike is surprisingly Nimble through traffic and corners. Yes it allowed me to corner pretty hard😮.
Ever since, I've considered it to be my potential upgrade for touring purpose.

What you pay vs what you get , KTM is still the best out there. 390 adv creams all other bikes in the segment and does it with a yawning gap. Ofcourse everyone of us wants the best of all worlds , but lets get real for a moment. We are not spoilt for choices when the 390 adv is around. Lets see what we got in the price range .
    1. 310 Gs : slow comfortable expensive ride.
    2. Himalayan : slow comfortable offroad unreliable ride.
    3. Jawa : yet to be proven on many parameters.
    4. Xpulse : a great second bike.
Point is 390 adv is the best money can buy if you are upto it. And they just made it better by offering umpteen options. Treat it like an android phone if you will, change it for what you want. The only bike that can be all. Period !

Hey folks.. loved this video.. however, I feel you'll are being too harsh on the KTM adv 390..
I own it since last 3 years now. I am 5ft7inchs which means that the adv is a damn tall bike for me.. but it never made me uncomfortable.. thanks to its light weight and weight distribution. Other thing is that, I like how the ABS is calibrated.. it has saved me on a few occasions.. Also, the traction control works just fine.. nothing extraordinary but in gravely surfaces both on and off road.. it channels the power reasonably well.
Yes the rear suspension in a punishment for my back.. and after watching this video.. I am planning to atleast get a adjustable shock at the rear..
Do note that I am not a hard core off roader.. I do mild off roading.. and long distance touring.. for which this bike brings a lot of value to the table.

Where is the riding video bro? I am really interested in 390X
U kept comparing it to the old 390, but since I am completely new to Adv 390, I won't be able to understand your feeling

You are making me awaken with concept i never heard of, never thought of making me more aware and rational on many things about bike. I used to think that KTM 390 adventure being a expensive bike and a KTM offering will be best in its segment due to its price and features but your video changed all of my perspective. Thanks both of you. 😊

8:06 With the recent KTM adv leaks, what you are trying to say here completely makes sense. Considering this was shot way-way back, how did you know where this bike segment was going. And do you have similar insights on other bikes where makers are working on fixing all the gaps?
    PS : Excellent content!

The KTM adventure line _never_ uses a frame that wasn't a dirt bike first and adapted to an Adv later. The 390 is the current _sole_ exception. The rest flows naturally, Mandar

I liked this new approach to moto-review. Two great moto journo having a conversation in a studio, really liked this. I am getting bored with the conventional approach of bike reviews where reviewers put on a GoPro on their helmet and ride like crazy and keep shouting with all might esp. FK. Good job motorinc.
