This song was what bought me into Dream Theater and later into progressive metal which turned out to be my favorite genre for the last 15 years!
10:09 you noticed it your first listening
! That's James screaming, on the backing track :D
james has like literally only screamed twice in the history of dream theater songs with this and octavarium and holy fuck he goes hard with it
After song discussion:
Lyrics: 98%
Music: 2%
They probably don't have the tools with which to analyze the music
Man this lyric is so much deep, how to ignore it? Xd
They aren't musicians or sound engineers. What else are they gonna comentate on? Lyrics are what most people gravitate to.
Train of Thought, heaviest DT album and one of the best
Systematic chaos arguably heavier
@@youssefelhalaoui9975 "one of" are the key words. Reading comprehension goes a long way.
@@shanephillips4011 no, he does say that it's the heaviest
In 2000 I used to listen "Awake" every day on my way to school on my "walk man" (not disk man).
Many years later, i asked myself how it is possible not to get tired.
That album is a masterpiece.
Agreed, and my fav.! Their Magnum Opus if you will. This is a masterpiece of an album.
Hell yes! This is a great Dream Theatre song! Sometimes yes they do go a little overboard with technicalities, but, that's what prog metal is. Why tap a million note sequence in 1 measure? Because you can.
That is possibly the MEANEST riff that I have ever heard from Dream Theater. Or any other band in a long, long time.
Same album - “Endless Sacrifice”
Awesome DT mastery.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Dream Theater.
Fun Fact: the very last key played is with the keyboardist nose.
Train of Thoughts is my fav Dream Theater album. It's just awesome all the way around.
everything about this song ROCKS!!! Favorite Dream Theater song
Please do Dream Theater "Ministry of Lost Souls" or "The Count of Tuscany". Beautiful melodies on both.
Yeah, they should do these beautiful songs. I love The Count of Tuscany,. It's beautiful, it's mysterious, and it's chilling too.
Or “In the presence of enemies pt ii”
FanaticalDrummer parts 1 and 2 together are amazing. There are videos of them combined on RUclips
MINISTRY OF LOST SOULS! YES!
Big YESSSS
Woohoo! thank you to your patreon for making this one possible! Dream theater is hands down one of my favorite bands. This song's lyrics were written by the guitarist, John Petrucci. He pens a lot of lyrics for DT, but to me his best lyrics always come from his introspection into his own faith (catholic, I think). Another song like that is Voices, which is one of my favorites. Glad you may be coming around for DT. Funny enough, the first song you reacted to by them, Wither, the lyrics were also written by Petrucci lol. So there's some hits and occasional misses lol
This album is a masterpiece... btw you guys should check Hollow years, live at Budokan, from their old dvd, it's just unbelievable!
I think Vin especially would really enjoy "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"
This song has one of my favorite guitar solos from Petrucci!
Please continue with the Prog Metal category. The most talented, intricate all around musicians invented this genre.
Any Dream Theater
Any Fates Warning
Any Porcupine Tree
Any Redemption with Ray Alder on vocals (check out any song on Snowfall On Judgement Day)
Any Opeth
Any OSI
Queensrÿche’s Rage For Order, Operation Mindcrime and Empire albums
Love Fates Warning and Ray Alder is one of my favorite vocals.
Welcome to the Dream Theater Vin ;)
That is Mike Portnoy on the Drums a legend, that's why we pic so much with Lars because he is just in another level.
Gabriel Berilli Portnoys drums are always so perfect. This snare and cymbal selection is impeccable for metal. And its not over the top double bass, hes so tasteful in selecting attributes of the genre. Every time I hear this album I just want to sit behind my kit and play music like this. Its flows so well.
@@FanaticDrummer I love Portnoy's little fucks that he puts in his drum patterns, like the thing he does at 4:28, like changing the tempo and time signature. Im not sure that is a entirely different time signature though, if someone who is good at time and tempo stuff (im a beginner in musictheory) could explain it better that would be cool as hell.
DIDUKNOWDAT .URANIDIOT? Same time signature its just beat displacement. But it fits. He knows how to play around appropriately. All he did was move the backbeat on the snare but the groove still fits.
Yall are still the ones I go to for this reaction to the song, thanks for doing it. I love the commentary after. Very insightful.
Brilliant reaction. Great discussion. Some of DT's songs are so sincere in their lyrics it induces genuine contemplation and discussion. Some topics are really very complex for a person to have clear views on. It is normal to not know what is right always. Just be humble about it and try to meditate upon it. Songs like these help. Shout out to whoever suggested this song! Brilliant.
John Petrucci (guitarist) who wrote the lyrics has said it's about the cults that go too far and the 40 sons and daughters is related to the cult in Japan that did some VERY insane acts. The song just calls attention to cults and those turning towards the mainstream light. Some cults will use holy religious books in twisted ways and then it manifests itself in murder of others or self (mass suicides). It's a warning to beware of false prophets making claims. Petrucci is also a Catholic by the way. DT are a great band that have some bad songs over the 30 years they've been going but don't write them off too soon.
I hope Vin and Sori saw this :). Thanks for that Jet.
It's also worth noting that this song was on their first album after 9/11, and they're from New York City. so they had some things to say about religiously motivated violence
Wrong. It's about David koresh and the event that happened in Waco, TX
Heavens Gate?
What bad songs????? Oo
Since you guys are open to long songs check out octavarium by Dream theater one of the greatest songs ever written
reaction was so good that i had to watch it twice, had a huge grin plastered on my face as you listened to the solo section.
The best of DT is yet to come.
A Change of Seasons (Metropolis 2000 live version)
Learning to Live
I'm so happy to see you guys are enjoying them now. I think you would love the food for thought (and ears) that is their 23 mins masterpiece "A Change of Seasons". The ex-drummer and co-founder of the band, Mike Portnoy wrote it about the loss of his mother at a very young age. She tragically died in a plane crash. It's absolutely brilliant songwriting. It doesn't get any better than this.
FORMER EX DRUMMER HE'S BACK BABBBBBY
It’s safe to say Vin loved this song especially the chorus
Please react to Angra - The Shadow Hunter
Old band from the new lead guitarist of Megadeth
Brazilian metal
Ahhh yeeesss...
@Wellington A. Moreira I think Rebirth is a better music to begin Angra
Angra / Rebirth!!
I love this breakdown, at your best and brightest. The more I listen to your thinking process, the more I respect your intellectual honesty and way of processing stuff. Faithful, but not zealous. Respect.
Omg, i was listening to this last night and i thought that would be a great reaction for the guys!! Cheers!!
Dude you are amazing. I enjoyed your discussion after the song so much!
I’m glad you guys finally reacted to this song. Great discussion. Dream Theater has many amazing profound songs. I hope this song propels you deeper into their music.
Yes!! I knew they would like this song! Thanks a lot to the patreon who requested it! 😊
You must see them live! Your doing a disservice to your ears and heart and mind if you don't. They are just as amazing live!!!
Dream Theater - Lost not Forgotten LIVE. You MUST see them live. They have fascinating concerts.
I have never noticed the Battle Hymn on my Train of Thought CD version of this song but did hear it in this reaction...will need to go back and check
My favorite group, I found a lot of bands through them. Opened me to a new world of music.
As an atheist, just wanna say that you guys are legit, Vin is the type of person I would love to have a religion discussion about. Not about wrong or right, but about religion in itself.
I love your smiles, on the pretty slick part.😁
The moment you realize the guitar and keyboards are playing in unison through half of the solo😳
Great discussion and great rating
Love your videos!
Dream Theater - the glass prison
Haken - the endless knot
Opeth - hessian peel
Really want them to cover Haken-Endless knot!
I see names of 3 masterpieces
Are you kidding me? Crystallised!
You're like a 15 year old fan. Stop suggesting the most famous shitty songs. What the fuck is the Glass Prison and why not Blind Faith, Trial of Tears? What the fucks is Hessian Peel, one of the most overrated Opeth songs ever. I believe Mikael couldn't decide to put which alternates in this song and made this.
You should see them play this live. It's mind blowing. Live at Budokan.
Dream Theater - Under a Glass Moon (LIVE score)
Dream Theater - As I Am
Welcome to the prog Olympics!
Now that we're starting to appreciate some prog type stuff, maybe some Opeth:The Baying of the Hounds.
You guys should react to the whole album “scenes from a memory” not at once, but save a day in the week and listen to one song. It’s amazing
But the thing is, to listen the whole album at once brings the excitement of the plot twist of the story
Beyond amazing
Please please pleeeease do Scenes from a Memory!!!! Metropolis Pt2!!!!
Home is an amazing song
Nah Vin will just cry about the pointless soloing he could never dream of playing.
Epica-Kingdom of Heaven (live)
No studio version
Absolutely beautiful song. Never been a big fan of Dream Theater but that was incredible.
Definitely more Dream Theater, and OPETH! Love the progressive metal stuff.
omg i raised my arms up at the same time during that intro swell before the chorus hahahahaha so majestic you gotta wave your arms around n shit ::D
Steve Vai - "For The Love Of God"
In the name of mutha forkin G. Vin you fucking love this and so did I. Cause I watched you love this. This will be my every DT reaction comment, past and future!
DT- THE SPIRIT CARRIES ON, the next level....
I’m wearing my Dream Theater - Train Of Thought t shirt whilst watching this... represent!
I think you should've done a live version to see how amazing they really are at playing their instruments, but still happy you did some dream theater :D
Absolutely love this song!!!
Omg i have been wanting u to do this since u did As I Am
Fantastic! One of their best epic songs ever.
It makes me very happy you guys did this song. Very nice discussion afterward, too. I know a lot of people shy away from religion discussions, but I love them. This song can probably find relation to several events, but it is Waco, TX which this song specifically refers to. The members of Dream Theater are majority Christians, and there are several songs with religious themes. "Blind Faith" is a fun one, because James points out that we tend to project a purpose for God, and that we should do things for ourselves, rather than (falsely) expect God to do things for us. You guys might enjoy that one :)
One of the best modern Dream Theater songs. This whole album was incredible in fact. One of their top 2 or 3 albums. I had wondered if you guys would catch the Battle Hymn of the Republic at the end, and you did! I love the indian/middle eastern inspired solo section and the harmonized guitar/keyboard run to close out the solo.
Sadly poor Sori saying you guys are caught up is totally wrong. You skipped one patron song entirely (possibly a copyright block issue) and still have one more to do after this one in order to stay even for the week.
I honestly thought you would hate this song, I am glad I was wrong. I can't remember if I was the one that put this up in the EU, but I definitely voted hard for it. This was the last song voted in from the EU before some of us split off to form the XU.
You all are nuts if you think Karesh didn't need to be taken out. That guy was a seriously evil dude. The government overstepped, true that, but that guy was as vile as they come. Its kinda scary that you can't see that. You can definitely have a discussion about if the government going in when they did resulted in innocent deaths that may have been averted. But the evidence just doesn't seem to support that. Historically or otherwise. Thats why cults are so incredibly dangerous.
I think the once proud religion turning toward the mainstream light is supposed to be Islam. Its important to remember that Dream Theater is based out of New York and this was the first real album they did post 9/11. (Six Degrees they had just entered the studio when this all happened, so writing was already in process for that one). I think each stanza in that section is talking about a different religion or faith (mormon, christianity, islam etc). With the idea being that all religions seem to justify violence with their faith. Which runs counter to what those various religions are actually supposed to be espousing.
China's religion official endorsed by the state is atheism (ie state atheism) but Buddhisim, Confucianism and Taoism are officially recognized and common. Good luck finding numbers on what the population actually follows in terms of religious faith.
Worth noting to that as far as I know Portnoy and Petrucci (who write most of the songs) are both religious. Portnoy is catholic I am 95% sure and Petrucci is christian. But I think as is often the case in music, it provides an outlet for these guys to question things. It doesn't mean they aren't still believers. It just means they are unsure or have doubts, which is incredibly normal I think.
You were doing so well until the 43rd minute where you had to shoehorn in Original Sin to explain away faith based violence. Which absolutely does happen in christianity and in EVERY major religion. Think about it this way. if people weren't fighting for religion the likelihood of your average person killing for say, "love of James Hetfield" is pretty small. Religion is such a deeply personal thing to everyone that it inspired incredible passion within people. And that passion can very very easily be directed to violence. Even with good people. And that is why the original sin concept is used as a crutch here. Its Vin's explanation for everything. We were talking about this on discord and as much as it would be nice to sit down and talk to you about original sin for a couple of hours. Neither of us will likely change the others mind. And if I did change your mind, as someone in discord brought up, it would shatter the foundation of your beliefs. And I don't know that I want to be responsible for that. If the idea that we are all bad and irredeemable works for you, thats good! Life is hard enough, if it gets your through the day to believe that all the bad shit people do is because we are all bad and some people manage to somehow rise above that, I think thats a great thing. But, when I get called our on not buying in to original sin,. like its the most obvious thing that I should be believing in....well I find it hard not to respond.
Guys, I really love you channel and reacts. Peace and cheers from Romania.....
Petrucci's fucking solos in this son is fucking AMAZING... And its not just that its "super-sweet metal shredding" awesomeness... there's a ton of metal guitarists out there who can shred it up... but Petrucci really raised the bar to a whole new level when he took it to those avant-garde extremes that really make those solos SO damn unique and interesting to listening to and just all-around exciting. Plus I love how he uses the Phrygian Mode to give it that "middle eastern" scale vibe that thematically goes with the motif of the song, since its about "killing in the name of God", and that concept goes hand-in-hand with the conflicts between the world's major religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and the middle-eastern region in general.
Not only does he use that Mode and that sonic motif very well within the context of this song, but he also doesn't confine himself into that concept and turn it into something cheesy and hokey, and knows when to break away from that and go into something really out-there, and avant-garde and creative. Love the solo work in this fucking song.
One of my all-time favorite DT songs.
On the live version of this song “Live at Budokan” they show video snippets of the people/s they’re referring to on the song.
FINAAAAALLYYY!! Thanks for reacting to this song!! If you still want DT songs to react, try As I Am!
The thing with prog, it's a bit like what you went through with Halford. At first you're like "WTF, calm down dude" and then once the "shock" of it wears off it begins to grow on you and you hear different things in the song that you missed before and appreciate it on multiple levels. At least for me, for many people that never happens and it's fine.
HOpefully next song you do from them is one of their older ones like Trial of Tears, Voices or Scarred.
- *SEPTICFLESH* : *Sangreal* (censored video)
- *PARADISE LOST* : *Rise of Denial*
- *MASTODON* : *Ancient Kingdom*
Great Choice
Heck yes. It’s awesome to see people give a DT song a ten.
PLEASE DO ANGELMAKER!! Any song from their album 'Dissentient' and the split they did with a band named - A Night In Texas.
The feeling on this song is so beautiful but vicious at the same time
Dismember - Under A Blood Red Sky
As a progressive rock and metal fan watching how you are starting to dig this stuff and the long epics... Try Neal Morse, I would like to see your reaction to that. He is one of the active grands of the genre, Mike Portnoy the great drummer and ex dream theater driving force is involved in Neal Morse Albums and I love the music.
Oh yeah, Neal is a very faithful Cristian, ALL his solo stuff is about God, that's why he left other bands inially in the early 2000s to focus on music about God. Try him out, please, my favorite is the Sola Scriptura Album, which is about Martin Lutter.
Hell I'm an atheist and I dig *Sola Scriptura, One,* and *?*
Thumbs up for the Tremonti Shirt!
The Song is great, the lyrics are deep and the studio performance at least on an emotional level topped by the live at budokan version with the guitar solo at the end. Give it a listen if you haven´t already. Kind regards from Germany, stay save!
Nice reaction, really interesting discussion! I thought I remembered you liking "As I Am" by Dream Theater. Now I gotta go re-watch that reaction :)
Ah "As I Am" was Vin 6, Sori 9
My favorite DT song!! So awesome!!
Dream Theater-Stream of consciousness please! Best instrumental song ever made
Thanks for the endurance
I hate that I'm struggling financially right now because God I want to make a Patreon request in the epic underground for a band Redemption, specifically their song The Fullness of Time. The lyrics are so deep, you would truly find alot if meaning in it and the story it crafts but it's around the 20 min range so the only way that's happening is when I can patreon you guys lol but things are turning around so hopefully I'll be able to soon. Thank you two again for your videos, I love how in depth you go into music and really break down the lyrics. Thank you.
it's more fun to watch them in live video than just audio actually.
ohhhh that tremonti shirt maaaaan , awesome
Octavarium!!!
live at score ?
The Score live-Version!
@@tornoutlaw yeah The Score version is absolutely amazing!!
They'll overdose!
nooo not yet for them lol, they just know dt
Another great song and video! Glad to see more dream theatre!
Protest the hero -blood meat would be cool to see you guys react to imo
You guys are the Bomb...... keep it up
awesome song
Awesome, great that you're doing Dream Theater songs, I love your reactions, analysis.. I would say do the song ''The Shattered Fortress'' from Dream Theater, awesome song, Godly guitar solo and lyrics, too.
Nice shirt Vin!
A shirt? you mean the Tremonti shirt? love that guy.
It'd take y'all 3 hors to get through Six Degrees of Separation, so what ever you do dont try it.
imo this is still their best overall album. Stream of Consciousnesses is got to be the best instrumental ever!
I'd say the best instrumental ever is Voice of the soul by Death but stream of conciousness is probably a close second
Its such a solid album. Not sure if theres one song I dont like on there. It only took them two weeks to write to lol They must have been craving the metal with repressed ideas
I agreed ! Try Persefone- Consciousness Part 1& Part 2 you're welcome ;)
Yes this is their best album so far period and we are almost at the end of 2019
What about images and words? Scenes from a memory? Come one, train of thought is excellent, don't get me wrong, but what sets it apart from the other albums is its heaviness (forgive me for my bad English)
Perfection!
Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries On (Live from Score)
Deathspell Omega - Carnal Malefactor
Yes that chant is said in the song at the end. But it's covered over by the music.
Dream Theater- The Count Of Tuscany
Probably my most fav by DT 💕
They played that as an encore one time I saw them at the Chicago Theater. One of the best concert experiences of my life.
YES!
Up!
Please guys, commenting for the first time on your video. Do this and The Best of Times. Follower of your channel since the past year. Thank you!
Through exposure, your ears are starting to get "seasoned".... good for you.
Oh man, you guys need to watch “Red State”. Such a great movie. Probably Kevin Smiths most unexpected movie about a Waco type situation. So good. Its like the movie form of this song.
The background chant is actually Julia Ward Howe's The Battle Hymn of the Republic, utilizing the first verse and refrain. Also, underneath the massive layers at the timestamp of 5:51-6:07, you can hear the Morse code for Mike Portnoy's (the drummer) catchphrase "Eat my ass and balls."
Great song!
Theocracy- Mirror of Souls
Theocracy- Laying the Demon to Rest
Theocracy- Nailed
