Dream Theater is a band that can take some to get into, but when you do, you get addicted. They are the real deal. They are like a combination of Rush, Metallica and movie scores. Hope you’ll do more. 🤘 All members are top of their game as musicians on their instruments.

After 30+ years of listening to Dream Theater, they are still my favorite band ... there are old favorites (Maiden, Queensryche) and newcomers(Devin Townsend, Gojira, Opeth, Mastadon, Jinjer, Spiritbox) that I love, but Dream Theater still is #1.
It's a long one, but my favorite song of theirs is A Change Of Seasons, written by Mike Portnoy (drummer) after the death of his mother.

Their song “ The glass Prison “ is pretty good. Their first song they event released on radio in 1992 is called “ Pull Me Under” it’s only around an 8 min song. But that’s the song that they came out strong with. They have so many different songs from the melodic to metal along progressive lines. Excellent musicians for sure .

As a fan of Dream Theater for 25 years, it's always interesting and intriguing to see people reacting to their music for the first time. For me it's a fresh take on their music even though i have listened to them thousands of times (and will continue to do so)
I really enjoyed your reaction and your appreciation of this song.
If you want to listen more of them, i recommend Sacrificed Sons which has a similar vibe and lyrical approach to this, as well as Lines in the sand and The view from the top of the world.
    Have a good one.

Dream Theater on your channel, finally! 😎
I could write many things about the band (which I met personally) and about the technical expertise of the individual musicians who compose it but, for now, among the many valid songs composed by them, I will limit myself to recommending two songs performed live: "Illumination Theory" (Live from the Boston Opera House) and "The Count of Tuscany".
I'm sure you won't regret it, both instrumentally and lyrically. 😉

My house gods. The legendary Mike Portnoy on drums and John Petrucci, on if the absolute best prog guitarists, John Myung on bass, James Labrie on vocals and the fantastic Jordan Rudess on keyboard. A must to watch a live video from them to understand their grateness.
The song is written about the cult religion "The Davidians". The bridge also talks about the ensuing Waco siege, were 80 of the 130 doomsday cultists were killed and the church of Mount Caramel was burned down.

Dream Theater is amazing band...I am listening them since my university years (end of last milenium 😀) and my most favorite album is of course the conceptual masterpiece of Metropolis pt. 2: Scenes from a memory. And from the a bit later work as mentioned already The Count of Tuscany and of course the masterpiece of "The best of times", that you will appreciate if you know the background story.
Thank you for great reaction guys! Cheers from Prague, Czech Republic!

I agree. Metropolis....is a masterpiece. It was the first album I heard from them. I got to see them in October of 2019. The first set was music from their current release, at the time, Distance Over Tme. The second set was Metropolis.... in its entirety. They were doing the 20th Anniversary Tour. Mike Mangini was drumming. I would love to see them again now that Portnoy is back in the band.

Long Island boys from about 45 minutes east of where I live. They have been around since 1988 and I never heard of them until around 1999. Still very much active and release a new album every 2-3 years on average. So their catalogue is extensive. They are the masters of making 12+ minute songs feel like 3 minutes. Basically because there are so many time signature shifts. Dream Theater is ALWAYS best done live. The songs pretty much sound exactly the same as the cds and its so much fun watching them play.
The Lyrics of this song. Think of when it came out. Not long after 9/11 and they are from Long Island. Also, they are talking about ALL religions. I think this was their first album after 9/11 but I am not positive about that. Sacrificed Sons is also about that. Their music is extremely intricate. This is probably middle of the road as far as that goes. And their lyrics usually have something meaningful to say and tell a story.
I think it's a popular song by them. It's hard to say with DT because they have so many songs that are amazing that don't really get played on the radio because it's progressive. Shame too because every member of the group, except maybe the singer, is considered God Tier by fans and musicians alike. The guitarists, John Petrucci, is VERY well known and considered maybe the best current guitarists. Great synopsis of this song and group!
    But Remember LIVE!!!!!!!!

These guys are among the best musicians in the world. They are highly regarded by their peers and virtuosos on their instruments. Their albums are concept albums and it's a wild ride every time. They blend Rock, Jazz, Metal, and a lot of other influences to make their unique sound. The interplay between guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess is amazing while bass player John Myung and drummer Mike Portnoy is so solid. The singer is James Labrie. Please go down their rabbit hole, but be ready for longer songs, you won't regret it. Oh, and Rush is one of their major influences, and that should tell you a lot about them.

Interesting choice as an introduction. personally I would have suggested something a little more accessible and well known for a starting point like ‘The Count of Tuscany’ or maybe ‘On the backs of angels’ but it has served the purpose of breaking the ice and opening the door to the band. Hopefully B&B will want to explore further and deeper into the catalogue. The band are all superb musicians and yes there are usually a few time sig changes and numerous transitions along the way. They have a huge catalogue from 1989 to the present day with 15 studio albums and from the most recent album a Grammy award for the track ‘The Alien’

Yes, for people that haven't heard any song by DT, the prog-metal tag would throw most people into thinking "ah this band makes complicated songs with shrieking and gritty voices" while the reality is I've never heard once LaBrie (their vocalist) fry screamed or growled in any of DT songs, mostly just clean vocals with harmonies and sometimes a little grit to it, which given how complicated most of their songs are, really compliments the "crowded" instruments at least imo

Just happened to stumble upon this video and your channel (I subbed). I've been a Dream Theater fan since 1992, and very happy to watch your reaction to this song and what DT is about. I could never pinpoint an actual "fav" song of theirs as so many of them are amazing for various reasons, however, "In The Name of God" is up there. Without giving too much away, many of their albums ended with a note, which their following album started with that same note (thus that note at the very end). I am sure it is in the comments, however, most of this song is about the Branch Davidians and the Waco tragedy many years ago. I highly suggest listening to the Octavarium song. A LOT of changes within that song (multiple "mini" songs, so to speak). Would love to see you all expand your Dream Theater listening, and react! Great content!

This is a really good intro song compared to how many reactors get recommended Dance of Eternity or Metropolis Pt1 for their first song. Both are great songs (Metropolis Pt1 is even part of the Rock Band 4 video game setlist), but are extremely progressive and can be rough for those not use to their style. ITNOG has a great main riff, a catchy chorus, and it demonstrates the musicianship without going too overboard. Other good introduction songs would Pull Me Under, Panic Attack, As I Am, and The Spirit Carries On (for a ballad).
The apex of Dream Theater is probably either Octavarium or A Change of Seasons, but those are 24 and 23 minutes long respectively. Their highest charting song was Pull Me Under (do album version, not music video for that one since it cuts 3 minutes of music out), and they won a Grammy for The Alien. Other fan favorites not yet mentioned include: The Glass Prison, Breaking All Illusions, Home, Learning to Live, and the Count of Tuscany.
They're also still an active band, they're currently in the studio recording their 16th studio album at the time of this post.

Well now, I'm always pleasantly surprised when my favorite bands and reactors collide unexpectedly. Dream Theater are incredible - just awesome, in the truest sense of the word. I'm glad this was your intro to them. It's older but gives a good "feel" for their general style. A lot of people end up with Dance of Eternity as an introduction, and while it's an incredible track - it's a horrible intro to DT. (being that it has no lyrics, for starters.) Really glad you liked it - you should keep exploring their discography for sure (on or off the channel.)

This song always puts me in mind of David Koresh and the Waco stand-off. I don't know if that is the precise inspiration for this song, or if it's just based on doomsday and "false prophet" cults in general, but this is one of my favorite DT tracks of all time.

From what I understand, it is very inspired by the events in Waco

It's always impressed me how of the members of the band, the "weak" member was the vocalist. Truly an incredibly line up of musicians.
