Nice to see someone from a different perspective listen to DT. Mike Portnoy is the drummer and backing vocals who returned after 13 years of absence. He as well is considered to be one of the best in his craft. He, John Myung (bass) and Petrucci went to school at Berklee. If you're interested in older you can listed to Pull Me Under which came out in 92' or something a bit newer and live like Instrumedly.
@hobbituary7321 not the best, it's what laid the groundwork for the band in a whole mostly because if it wasn't for that, DT wouldn't be the powerhouse it is.

Essential Dream Theater Tracks are: A Change Of Seasons, Octavarium, Home, A Nightmare To Remember, On The Backs Of Angels, Endless Sacrifice, Breaking All Illusions, As I Am, Pull Me Under, The Spirit Carries On, & Metropolis Pt 1
Their older stuff is a lot more progressive than it is metal. Back then they had such a different vibe. Nowadays they've fully embraced dark themes and their "signature" sound. Check out Under a Glass Moon.
A buddy of mine was never much into metal, mostly blues and jazz stuff, but I kept pressing him to try Dream Theater. Every time he’d listen to a song of theirs, he’d hate it. Eventually, I tricked him by renaming A Change of Seasons title and artist in iTunes and put it on when he was here. I just had it on low volume while we were catching up and about halfway through he was like “who is this?!?!’ and I could tell that he was liking it. I said, finish the song and I’ll tell you, so for another 12 or so minutes, I watched as he was visibly engrossed, after which I told him the band and song. He was blown away that he’d never liked them or given them a fair shot. Needless to say, he became a fan and their next time on tour in the area, he took me and bought the tickets. Anyway, that’s the song I think you should try next.
Sweet reaction! Dream Theater has an impeccable discography. There are no bad choices. The Glass Prison As I Am Lines in the Sand Octavarium Learning to Live ^ all from different albums If you're feeling ambitious, just check out a full album. Thats the best way to experience DT imo.
As someone who also doesn't listen to a lot of traditional metal but has always been a big Dream Theater fan, I recommend you go back through their discography. They are worth it. They are probably objectively the most talented band in rock/metal on the planet as far as pure musical ability and have a lot of great albums. I would say they were pretty innovative too, there's no one that sounds quite like them, even though they have a more classic sound.
Dance of eternity, is a muuuuuust! Awake, for it is such a different kind of song! The enemy inside, because it is sooooo groovy and all over the place!
Essential tracks: metropolis pt 1. The mirror, dance of eternity, the glass prison, stream of consciousness, octavarium, ministry of lost souls, the count of Tuscany, breaking all illusions, illumination theory, the gift of music, untethered angel, the alien,
That was a very well constructed and fresh analysis of Dream Theatre. I really enjoyed watching you react to them for the first time. Welcome to their 40 year ride! They are definitely one of the most technical and talented bands at every position. VOCALLY Labrie has incredible tones and range, however, he had a vocal cord injury a few years back that almost derailed him. The band urged him to continue on, and though he has healed over time, he is more reserved. I do encourage you to check out more from this legendary & epic group. I know there are probably more technically amazing songs others may recommend, IMHO may I suggest; early "Pull me under" was my intro to DT many years ago and still a favorite thru today. Also the more commercial sound of "Forsaken" is a favorite. LIVE VERSION: "Metropolis Pt1 LIVE at Luna Park" will give you an idea of how they do pull all this off live. One of their most watched with over 3 million views. Liked and Subscribed!
A 'few years back' literally being three decades ago in 1994. He only had two years in the band before the injury, though honestly doing 3 hour shows singing high notes at the top of his lungs is what has done it as much as anything else, he was routinely getting steroid shots into his vocal folds. Not healthy stuff at all. Probably never had healthy technique on top of it. If he was only singing 30 minutes a night or only doing a show or two a week I think we'd all be hearing a very different sounding singer today.
Excellent reaction! This is an amazing band. One of the things I like about their music is that it's constantly changing. Just when you start getting comfortable with the song, they change it, and change it, and change it. I love it! Keeps me on my toes. 🙂
Their 1992 album Images and Words is a must for anyone’s music collection. It is one of my all time favorite albums. 1999’s release “Metropolis Pt. 2” is another great album. The song, “The Spirit Carries On”, is a beautiful piece of music that I hope will be played at my memorial service someday. 🙂
Punk was a direct response to Prog, it's literally, intentionally dumbed-down. I just dig this because in order to create this, it's a literal life commitment with thousands of hours of practice above what it would take to make other types of music. It's not "better" than other styles, I just appreciate the work put into it. "Alas they do have a vocalist." Wow, shots fired ;)
the others will suggest the songs that are always reacted by other reactors :D I'm gonna go for uncut gems! and I dont want you to be puzzled with numerous options. I'll suffice to just one studio and one live! Studio version: In the Presence of the Enemies part 1 & 2. Live version: In the Name of God Live at Budokan
My top few were always anything off Systematic Chaos (specifically the opening drums in the opening track I loved), Octavarium (a 24 minute masterpiece), Honor Thy Father off of Train of Thought (insane drum intro), all of Black clouds and silver linings,. My dad was the DT fan, and as a drummer he got me into Mike Portnoy and everything DT and of course all his other music tastes. But it grew on me slowly and I began to explore outside the few songs I really loved later in life, but we were both fully crushed when Portnoy left. But boy was I glad I ever found them. Me and Dad just saw DT with Animals as Leaders and Devin Townsend a lil over a year ago. Incredible show. This new song is a lovely return (although understandable it could sound a lil recycled, but I think it was necessary). Very cool track, excited for more.
Obviously check out more dream theater, but I'd also recommend checking out the drumeo and pianote videos that the drummer Mike portnoy and keyboardist Jordan rudess did. That's the best way to see their chops and natural musicianship in real time. Mike portnoy was given a tool song to learn on the spot, and Jordan was given an Alicia keys song and an animals as leaders track to learn on the spot.
Mr Mike Portnoy - the mighty drummer is actually the cornerstone of the band. He can influence whole band sound really and it shows/hear. His huge drum set is actually two sets in one (thus 3 bass drums, 2 for regular drum set (this one on the left side) and 1 with double kick for smaller kit placed on the right side for different tone. I would suggest all their work really because it is sooo vast, complex and diverse. But maybe you could try something from their begining like "Take that time" from the "Images and Words" album which could show you the scale of James LaBrie's vocal which was insane back in the days. But I am sure others will have great sugestions as well as this band is just pure voyage all the way.
They always..nail it live. They have a wide variety of music..This is off their 16th studio album. Recommendations.🤔. Home. As I Am. Nightmare to Remember. A little lighter...Breaking All Illusions (one of my favorite Petrucci solos in this one)
Dream Theater virtually defines Prog Metal, so perhaps you like it more than you know. I recommend checking out a live performance from Dream Theater, anything from Live At The Boston Opera House is good, but I recommend Illumination Theory. It's almost 20 minutes long, but well worth the time.
Pull Me Under and Panic Attack are two songs I think you will enjoy. It’s early Dream Theatre but it shows two incredible sides of the band, give those a listen they are bangers and goated songs 🤘🏻
Nice analysis 👍Dream Theater songs that I recommend you react to: Glass Prison, The Mirror, Count of Tuscany, A Nightmare to Remember, Home. Preferably a studio recording, not live. There are many more great ones, they have 15 studio albums and 16th coming in February next year.
David, thank you for checking out something out of your wheelbase. Music is very subjective and I completely respect that. I completely accept your taste differing and that's perfectly okay. Thanks again.

I think this is a great introduction to DT. Because it's a pretty 'typical' DT track imo, and I mean that in a good way. It's technical, nice riff(s), amazing drumming, great 'noodle' section... it's all I want from them. If you find some parts of this you liked you're gonna have fun checking out more!
Images and words is essential listening. My upbringing was spent on Train of thought. It will remain my favourite. Some parts of the fanbase call instumentals "best of LaBrie", baceuse they prefer not to hear him sing. I don't mind. Singing in this band is a very demanding job. Liquid tension experiment, which is a instrumental side project with Tony Levin, is a gold mine. Also instumedley live at bodukan is a taste of what you will find in the older albums, I guess you could call that essential listening. The music has suffered from loosely tuned drums and very wet cymbals on the last three albums, not having Mike Portnoy on. Distance over time and A View from the Top of the World is very enjoyable albums despite not having nailed the drums. The fan base is here split again between Mike Portnoy fans who just cannot bear listening to Mike Mangini. Can't fault any of them. The musicianship of Jordan Rudess is astonishing as he comes closer and closer to the guitar sound, and has even started to learn to play the guitar since this spring. Maybe we'll see him play live with a guitar this next tour! This kind of music rewards repeated listening, but people reacting here on youtube seem to enjoy what they hear. Mike Portnoy has made magic with Transatlantic, don't miss it!
One of the pioneers of progressive metal, they have an excellent discography that you could sink hours into and scratch the surface. This new single is great though.
You're coming into dream theater at the right time. The last 14 years have been the most mid music ever. Listen to the song home. Drop D tuning, guitar riff and solo that will inspire you.
It's a shame your first impression is this garbage. The return of Portnoy was a major step back in musical talent. His boring RLRLKK fills are what many consider to be his signature, but they lack any creativity and come off as stale retreads.
If I were one of these RUclipsrs, motivated by perhaps this new release, I would stream the first songs / recommended master pieces, not this one. It's kinda ignorant to go straight to this one new song in public imho. So many RUclipsrs do that. Also letting ads appear in the middle of a song... Wtf. Bad taste.
I'm not sure how much content creators have control for the ads youtube is shoving to us. I use adblocker so I don't ever have ads in middle of the videos.
