The previous song on the album, "Vacant", about singer James LaBrie's daughter slipping into a coma, introduces that opening riff, but on piano. It's an achingly beautiful song and awesome lead-in to "Stream of Consciousness".
Fun fact: "While Dream Theater were in the studio in 2003, recording what would become Train of Thought, they wondered what an outsider would make of their descriptions for how certain sections of the unfinished songs sounded. These descriptions were used on arrangement charts to help with structuring the song before it was recorded. "Stream of Consciousness" had sections described as "Crimson Setup", "U.K. Rise", "Straight Groove x2", etc. They wondered what would happen if someone were given just these descriptions and had to come up with what they believed the finished song would sound like, so they issued a challenge to Dream Theater fans through their websites and message boards to do just that. The contest began and after a number of months dozens of entries had been received. The band listened to and judged the entries over the course of the next world tour, and the winner was announced to be a composition by Andy Rowland and Ant Law." They even released a CD of their favorite submissions. Pretty cool!
Vin always says he doesn't like Dream Theater but all his reactions to the band show the exact opposite, which is a total paradox. I really don't know what this guy's deal is.
@VinAnd Sori This and the Death Angel Sonic Beatdown were already uploaded a month or two ago. The only song that wasn't uploaded from this same set is Opeth - The Leper Affinity
Hey guys, I've been following you for a while and love your discussions! I learned many frameworks about religion from you. Would love seeing you guys check out the Long Defeat Album by Deathspell Omega, it is less discointed and intense than the other albums and more easier to listen to, but still amazing as the other albums, you can check out "sie sind gerichtet" or the title song the long defat, or eadem sed aliter, I would like seeing you deconstructing the underlying narrative of this one. I found lyrics to be more modern but still full of entarnaining riddles about our relationship with faith. This is going to be my second comment, I dont want to spam so much so the last one Cheers
Vin and music TLDR... He doesn't like pretentiousness, and he doesn't like to feel like his time is being wasted. He likes Prog... As long as it doesn't break those rules. Seems like a song that is overly repetitive, and does not evolve musically, is an issue. Who cares how intricate the bit of music is, if it is only 30 seconds long, and you just repeat that over and over for several minutes straight. Pretentiousness is subjective, and one's thoughts on that can evolve. At least as far as the feeling you get from just listening to the music. If the band comes off as pretentious in interviews, that's a different thing. Dream Theater has a lot of long songs, and many of them are esentually broken down into movements. "In the Presence of Enemies" is like that, and a favorite of mine. It evolves musically, but keeps motifs and brings back ideas from other parts. Symphony X, their song "The Odyssey" is 25m long, but is broken down into movements that feel almost like different songs. It is one of my personal favorites.
I see your points….I would never have suggested most of the prog songs you guys have done! Bad choices by the community! I will be a PATREON member in January….and will suggest “the great” prog songs!
Se nota que no sabes nada de música amigo, si te molestan la cantidad y variedad de notas musicales mejor dedícate a reaccionar al Regetón, ahí solo usan 2 o 3 notas, seguro eso te hará feliz.
This is a re-upload, what happened to the original? Vin's take on prog, too many notes and too long. Vin, you need to realize what prog is and change your perspective. Prog is progressive. Many people, not just you, think that prog is just long songs with odd time signatures and a lot of instrumental sections but that's not the case. Progressive music generally tells a story, not always but generally that's the case. It's progressive IE, it progresses through a story or an emotion or a series of changing emotions. The reason the songs are usually longer is to accompany the story telling and support the underlying emotion without sounding like a disjointed mess. The reason for the odd time signatures generally is to move the story forward with a stark change from the previous section. The reason for so many notes as you put it is to keep the listener from getting bored hearing the same 3 chords repeating over and over again and at times a key change is needed to support the change in emotion even if it's a subtle change from minor to major or changing from the root to the major 5th which essentially keeps the same key but totally changes the feel. If you want to appreciate prog, and it's totally ok if you don't, but if you do then you need to listen with the mindset of taking a journey. That journey might take you full circle like this song which ends very similarly to how it begins or in a song like Octavarium which actually has a lyric "Find I've come full circle" and the last line of the song is "this story ends where it began". Songs like The Count of Tuscany tells a story of fear but end up just being misunderstood legend and Just Let Me Breathe is a fuck you their record label. I'd like to see you guys react to more Dream Theater, but don't listen to it like it's a song on the radio or played at a party. Listen to it like it's the soundtrack to a book or the music accompanying someone's story.

Vin es un papanatas burlón que no le da el mate para entender el Metal Progresivo.
