John Myung is perhaps the most underrated bassists alive. He’s an intensely private and quiet person, so he never really pushes himself forward in any way, but I doubt there’s more than three or four other players in the world who could hang with this band, much less be a driving force in the musicality of it.
I read where he used to practice by playing along with Iron Maiden records with the speed turned up on the record player
He's the only bassist that I truly worship and actively listen for in a song while there's amazing guitar and drums going off in the mix. No bassist alive ever managed to get my admiration like Myung did. He's an amazing musician.
Tool can but I just am not a big fan of them but can recognize how skilled they are.
Love him, check out a Japanese band called Band Maid, the bass player Misa is a 5 string monster. I was joking with my brother that I would love to see John and Misa have a true monster bass baby, he said John's wife would not be happy!! She is special.
@@scorpiusbalthazar4327 Tool is awesome but nowhere in this league, especially live. Way better singer though
My 1st listen to Dream Theater too and i'm blown away, great reaction
Check out The Glass Prison by Dream Theater. I promise you this epic will blow you away!!!
@@alanalanis2257 Agreed! Amazing song from my favourite DT album.
Welcome to DT my friend
The Glass Prison by Dream Theater also has mind blowing drumming by Mike Portnoy as well as unbelievable musicianship by the rest of the band. Please react to this legendary epic from their double album Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
Original drummer is Mike Portnoy, current drummer is Mike Mangini. Both incredible. Your three reactions have all been with Portnoy.
@ I had the privilege to see Mangini play with Steve Vai in concert. He's unbelievable, but so is Portnoy.
Dream Theater don't write songs, they write journeys! Breaking All Illusions live from Breaking the Fourth Wall and if you really want to be blown away Illumination Theory live (both of these are with Mike Mangini on drums). Dream Theater do melodic surprisingly well and Breaking All Illusions is as complex as it is melodic.
Yeees I agree 100%, breaking all Illusions is a must
Absolutely!🤟🏻
Great reaction. Been listening to DT for 25+ years. My favorite band.
I'm a old hippe I've never heard this before its smoking hot glad to see there's a band this good Aloha
Well then, get into the groove, man! Totally far out...
listen to the entire album ... one of their best
Dude... you have alot to catch up on then..... This is literally NOTHING compared to some of their other stuff!! Complete insanity!! Watch them live... they're even BETTER!!
There's another song from this album that I think is even better than this one called This Dying Soul. Totally worth checking out!
One of the greatest bands of all time no doubt. Portnoy is phenomenal. Biggest roller coaster ride is their entire album, Metropolis pt. 2 Scenes From A Memory. Seriously mind blowing! You will not be disappointed. I have seen them live several times. Unbelievable
Interesting you described Dream Theater as final boss music. They contributed an INSANE instrumental called RAW DOG to the God of War 3 soundtrack. I hope you can also react to this song as well. IT'S MIND-BLOWING!!!
I didn't know this. Thanks for sharing
IDTFC (Indonesian Dream Theater Fans Club) here..
I love all of Dream Theater's music. But this album is beyond special. This is possibly the best metal album of all time. Megadeth and Metallica don't even come close.
Not wanting to sound like some snob, but it always amuses me when people put Metallica, Megadeth, Pink Floyd or Iron Maiden in the same category as Dream Theater. They're a child's play in comparison. Dream Theater's members are ALL musical gods. They're on a league of their own and no one will ever touch them or come close.
I think the potential is it there. Haken is also amazing but not quite at Dream Theater's level. Between the Buried and Me is also phenomenal but the harsh vocals do not make them an accessible band.
Im a big DT´s music fan and is funny because this albums is one of my less favorites. Almost every metalhead and DT fan loves this album but for me is obviously a great and strong piece of music but Id never got a connection with it.
@@iulia.bianca.b Tool
@@iulia.bianca.b This is a great album, no doubt, but there's far more to crafting a piece of music then technical ability.
Great Reaction, Check out Porcupine Tree " Anesthetize " Live . Alot of drummers have reacted realizing that Gavin Harrison is also a BEAST 👺
Oh yes! My favourite song ever!
You need to check out "When the water breaks from Liquid Tension Experiment" All the members are from Dream Theater except the bass player. Prepare to be blown away from the drums.
The joy of this is that you found an amazing band that has a huge track list and are still knocking it out of the park, welcome to many hours of joy and astonishment.
The Ministry of Lost Souls by Dream Theater is beyond mindblowing, check it out
This was very beautiful. Almost symphonic. Thank you.
So far you've had Panic Attack, The Dance Of Eternity and In The Name Of God - so a heavy melodic song, a technical monster instrumental and another heavy melodic song.
But there is SO MUCH MORE this band can do. You haven't yet tapped into their emotional side at all.
Everyone has their favorites, but I think the title track of Octavarium is obligatory for anyone doing Dream Theater reaction videos. It balances all the bands' qualities and gets you the most complete picture of what they're about.
I have only heard snippets of this group here and there but this song...WOW. I LOVE this song!! Definitely going to delve deeper into their catalogue now.
They have so much music and such a diverse catalog that the trick is if you hear a song you don't connect with, just try another one.
Or give the song you don't like another listen and eventually you'll like it. That happens a lot when I hear Dream Theater songs. At first I don't like it but after a few listens I'll begin to love it. It's really weird how that happens.
You can’t go wrong exploring the myriad of musical journeys Dream Theater can provide! “Take Away My Pain” is one I think you’d enjoy to get another one of their many stylistic presentations.
Another great reaction to this treasure of Prog. 👍🏻
Loved your Dream Theater reactions. I think you’ve only done three - maybe you’ve already consumed their whole discography, but if not, I’d recommend Fatal Tragedy or Beyond This Life. They’re popular tracks from the same album as The Dance of Eternity. Cheers 🤘🏻
Dream Theater never dissappoints, I really appreciate the fact that you've gotten further into Dream Theater than most reactors.
Most of them listen to the most popular songs, and move on from there. But Dream Theater has made A TON of great songs of all different types. If they went all the way, they'd be surprised ten-fold.
Rock on, man!
Dream Theater is a group of some of the very finest musicians ALIVE. Has been for decades. All of them are among the greatest to ever play their instrument. And when Mike Portnoy left (the drummer you've reacted to so far) left, we were all sort of scared, no lie. But Mike Mangini came in and...wow. He is one of the best I ever heard. He's been in the band since 2011 and I'll second the notion that you should check out "The Alien" from their latest album (they're STILL getting it done, as you will see -- I think it's one of their finest records). Love your reactions and love having you in the DT family, Chod!
Ya I’m in the camp where I enjoy both. Portnoy has a more enjoyable “feel” but there’s no denying that Mangini is a fucking Human metronome in his own right.
If your loving DT check out Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory Hands down the greatest music since Beethoven and will live on for For hundreds of years! People have made 2 hour plays from that music!
This whole album is insanely phenomenal!!!
A lot of times I recommend listening to the studio album; this one is worth watching the live performance, particularly the Live at Budokan version. Seeing those insane unison keyboard/guitar runs by Rudess and Petrucci is worth the price of admission alone.
The Live at Budokan version of this is the best version I think. The outro guitar solo is one of the best Dream Theater solos ever.
Seeing this live is even more breathtaking. Check out this song on their Live at Budokan show. It's on RUclips.
Chod, glad to see you’re back for more. Next up hopefully is Pull me Under off the Images and Words album. This is the Song that got them noticed. And yes these guys are off the charts in talent.
The Live at Budokan from 2004 is a must for this and many other song. Unbelievable Performance.
Frissons!!!! Ce son est juste incroyablement magnifique !! 👍😉🙏👌 Dream theater the best!!!!!
Seeing that your down the DT rabbit hole, I suggest The Best of Times. That song will get ya right in the feels. Another would be Illumination Theory. Both epic songs.
I highly recommend 'In The Name Of God - Dream Theater (Multi-Instrumental Cover) By Owen Davey' on youtube. This 14yo kid covers this song nearly flawlessly. It's insane.
Having reacted to the original here, maybe do a reaction to Owen Davey's cover. He does the bass, guitars, drums, and keyboards!
Awesome, best musician's ever
Now your on the deep end of Dream Theater buddy!! Please react to The Glass Prison next. This song will also melt your brains out of your ears!!
You need to do the 12 step suite. A huge epic song, divided in 5 songs across 5 albums. Only DT can do this, you wont me disappointed.
The Glass Prision
This Dying Soul
The Root of all Evil
Repentance
The Shatered Fortress
As a drummer myself and long-time Rush fan, I was blown away when I first heard Dream Theater. The song "6:00" on the Awake album blew me away with the drum fill intro and the whole groove to the song. Simply astonishing!
Dream theater, one of my favorite band....
Progmet rules...
You're just scratching the surface. PLEASE go on.....
Thank you so much for reacting to one of my most favourite bands Dream Theater.
I'm a 64 yr old rock and metalhead..who grew up with and love Floyd, Yes ,Purple , Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc and then the brilliant thrash metal bands.. Metallica et al. .. Dream Theater deserve to be mentioned in the same light .. absolutely superb band.
This whole album is brilliant ...even the instrumental Stream of Consciousness...check out John Myungs bass playing in that one.
There are so many brilliant tracks for you to enjoy.... Misunderstood and Glass Prison from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Voices. from Awake, The Nightmare I Remember from Black Clouds and Silver Linings, Metropolis PT 1, Bridges In The Sky...from A Dramatic Turn of Events.
You have opened up a great rabbit hole. Happy listening dude👍✌️🤘
Please react Dream Theater Illumination Theory live on Boston
Dream Theater
What else can you say. Perfection at its best. Thanks again for sharing this wonderful song with us all. 😎
Phrygian Dominant FTW!!! One of my most favorite DT songs. :)
I love your smile as you listen to my all time favorite band. Uber talented, all of them
Metropolis part 1 live at Luna Park, pull me under, octavarium live live at score.
I’d check out Hells Kitchen into Lines in the Sand. 2 seperate songs, but they belong together. Hell’s Kitchen being the build up to Lines in the Sand. Or, The Glass Prison, Voices, Learning to Live, Take the Time, Scarred, Trial of Tears…you get the idea.
Mike Portnoy - original drummer... left the band a while back to pursue other projects. Since then has played in countless bands (Sons of Apollo, Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors ...) One of the best drummers ever!
One of my first Dream Theater songs was Metropolis Part 1 (heard it back in 2018 and haven't looked back) and uhhhh, well, check it out! It's a journey I have yet to experience again in music. Nearly every Dream Theater song is an absolute masterpiece and always a unique experience. Keep on listening man! They're genuinely incredible.
Lmao final boss. Same thought I had when I first listened to this song.
try The Shattered Fortress or Octavarium , it's just mind blowing
I suggest listening to their 12th step suite. It’s about Mike Portnoy‘s battle with alcoholism. There’s five songs spread over five albums. The first one is the glass prison Off of 6° of inner turbulence. The second one is This Dying Soul off of train of thought. The third one is root of all evil off of Octavarium. The fourth one is repentance off of systematic Chaos and the forth is The Shattered Fortress off of black clouds and silver linings. Trust me you will not be sorry
nxt DT song reaction has to be Octavarium !! this is not just a normal song but a journey into another world anc back !!
One of their best songs live. The background videos are powerfull
🤯🤯 The Glass Prison! 🤯🤯 Thank you for great reactions!
Thank you for hearing it for real. Their whole.catalog bro. Its more than worth it
Love Dream theater !
Awesome react Man !!! I found them almost 30 years ago and have never looked back.... they still to this day play live shows that will Blow you away !!!!
Train of Thought is DT's heaviest album by far and I love it.
Mike Portnoy (ex- drummer) was on this record... he had founded Dream Theater in 1985 w/ John Petrucci (guitar) & John Myung (bass)... their original name was Majesty. Portnoy left the band in 2010, and it was a huge shock to the fanbase and band alike, cos he was the main guy, a lyricist, the co-producer, composer... he did most of the interviews and social media. Portnoy wanted to focus on other projects like Flying Colors, Transatlantic, The Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo... different styles of music to play. Mike Portnoy played drums on John Petrucci's recent solo instrumental album... They also recorded a 3rd Liquid Tension Experiment instrumental album, which reunited Portnoy & Petrucci w/ DT keyboardist Jordan Rudess and famed bassist Tony Levin...
Dream Theater would not reveal their new drummer until 2011, when the released the footage online of their drummer auditions... Mike Mangini was finally revealed as the drummer, along w/ the next album 'A dramatic turn of events' in 2011. Mangini had been a drum pro since the 90's, and had recorded albums w/ Annihilator, Extreme, Steve Vai... Mangini also played on DT singer James LaBrie's solo records.
Great reaction, I’ve been a big fan of theirs since the beginning. I would love to see you react to Change of Season, the studio version. Probably my favorite!
This Dying Soul is just a flat out banger for 13 mins. 150 bpm and long ass fills.
Also check out Liquid Tension Experiment, a side project that is all instrumentals. Three albums that will blow you away. Their live in LA video is literally on another level.
Check out Honor Thy Father from this album ... awesome drum intro
its my favorite track for them, Man the bass from hell super bass.. if you are into progressive music i highly recommend to check Riverside- Dance with the shadows and Leprous- the sky is red
Dream Theater is "Tool" for musicians that count off to the sound of car alarms. 😁🤣😎💯
Dream Theater is an amalgam of all the legendary bands times infinity!!
I had heard of Dream Theater but I had never heard Dream Theater. My life has been incomplete. You complete me Chod.
References 'Mike' the drummer.
The current drummer is Mike Mangini
The drummer you've heard in your reactions so far is Mike Portnoy. Left the band in 2010.
You’re ready for Octavarium! :)- Or A Change of Seasons, or Illumination Theory! Keep up the good work!
You are great!
A side project that Mike Portnoy (the drummer) did in the late 90s/early 2000s was called Liquid Tension Experiment. It's an all-out jam-fest all instrumentals. Here are a few to check out:
Acid Rain
914
Another Dimension
Paradigm Shift
Universal Mind
@Wilburn Reactions, check out the Live at the Budokahn dvd. It was on the tour after this album. They performed this song and many others. Stuff that blows this out of the water. And I'm not saying that lightly. It was that good
This is one of their darkest and heaviest albums - which makes it one of their best albums in my book.
Dive on in, the water is fine!
I pause at 1:34 I look at these guy reaction and he knows it’s about to go down. Haha
This is a real group. Drummer went to Winery Dogs, and Flying Colors
Request Flying Colors 'Blue Ocean'
excuse....pervious drummer went to Flying Colors and Winery Dogs Mike Portnoy (A name for you to take note of....great drummer.)
Really great to see real music being made.
Great Message Also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This music may be the only reason I admire humans.
You should listen to this on Live at Budakon.
Fantastic job!🙏🏻
Just subbed !
There isn't a bad song on this album. 10/10 in my opinion. Or as close as you can get.
I'm so glad to see more reactors getting into the Train of Thought album lately. IMO, this album was the peak of DT's material, and is on my shortlist of the handful of perfect albums throughout music history.
they sound this good Live too. Glass Prison is a Must...there are Several "Must" Do songs from DT....But So far so good. I will subscribe
If u want to see Portnoy Dual it out with Rudess watch Beyond This Life Live At Budochan. He hits every note on drums same as Rudess. Amazing and rarely reacted to.
Saw them a week ago and it is incredible Try the newest THE ALIEN You play the drums wait till you here the start on this Trip in Space..
I love DT and ToT is probably my favorite album end to end. My first introduction to DT was hearing Pull me Under for the first time on the radio. I was hooked thinking this is the baddest shit ever. I buy the album Image and Words to discover Pull me Under being one of the easier songs on that album. I was hooked like the first time heard Rush.
Definitely recommend checking out a drum cam video that Mike Portnoy uploaded. He did a bunch while they were recording certain albums including this one. Honor Thy Father or As I Am drum cam videos are both solid.
Also, check out Liquid Tension Experiment...mostly same musicians but all instumental...incredible!!!
You got a sub from me strictly from the fact that you actually PLAY instruments and understand music!
One of my favorite songs! If you do more DT, I reccomend the entire album metropolis part 2 scenes from a memory , every song in order because it's a concept album, the glass prison, and this dying soul
I haven't been reading comments, but I know you're getting tons of DT suggestions. Metropolis Pt 1 should high on your list.... so many others too... most of their older stuff stretches across metal, rock, even jazz and bluesy sometimes... true progressive rock/metal. New stuff is becoming different, probably the highest level of complexity in developing the tracks, though many of us hardcore DT fans long for some of the older metal days. That's not to say they aren't still the GREATEST PROG BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!!! 'cuz they are. :) Love your reactions, my man, keep it up.
Another great reaction and I'm all for a DT rampage. It makes me happy seeing someone getting so much into them. As I said in the last one you're definitely ready to go next level with Octavarium, Change of Seasons or Count of Tuscany.
So glad they are playing Tuscany on their tour this year!
To my experience : "The more i listened to DT i respect John Myung more than ever."
Look at “Octavarium” and see the journey :)
Next I suggest A change of seasons or Illumination theory!
the Music is world class....but you need to pay attention to the Lyrics Also. Amazing Stories
Dream Theater is the soundtrack to my life!!
I’m right there with you Alan. I don’t go a day without listening to Dream Theater. I try and tell everybody I know about this band because nobody ever knows who they are and I’m blown away by that fact
4/4 to 6/8. Prevalent time signatures.
I've been a fan for 32 YEARS! And if you want to talk about deep and complex, research the Octavarium album and all the high level theory that went into it. Insane.
They do it live note for note. Gotta WATCH them live. Score or Breaking the 4th Wall. Search them here on youtube.
Dance of eternity live. Watch the breakdown by Mike portnoy on you tube. He shows how to count the breakdown. He loves Rush
