The first time I heard Dream Theater was 'Pull me under' on the radio when I was driving. I had to pull over because they moved me so much I could not drive and listen to them at the same time. My reaction 'who the fuck is this!!!'.
If you want to listen more....Listen to Metropolis Pt.2 Album ..It's a concept album. Listen to start to finish reading lyrics. You'll enjoy the record...
You have to listen Metropolis. But the studio version, unfortunately the singer is out of tune in the live shows. The best of Dream Theater is in studio.
You might want to react to Instrumedley - Live at Budokan. The musicianship is mind-blowing. The drummer, Mike Portnoy is no longer with the band. In my opinion he was the heart and soul of Dream Theater. Many people feel that way (and many don't). You should check out the entire Live at Budokan DVD or Bluray. The first time I saw it my jaw was practically on the floor through the entire show.
Make sure you do reactions to Dream Theater as you dive into the catalogue! You should do Stream of Consciousness from Budokon next... Then maybe Voices, Instrumedly, and Lines in the Sand live in Bucharest!!!
THIS is why they are DT. They're a unique and life loving band. My first show was in '93 in NH. Myung has always been my bass hero. John, I was in the front row in the 2003 outdoor after the show. Thanks for shaking my hand. You inspire me.
Don't listen to these guys much either, but that was a bonafide opus! I have a soft spot for long epic songs and 80s style singers (i.e. No Cookie Monster vocals). Have to give these guys a listen! Cheers Ruben! 🤘🏻🖖🏼🍻
Oh man, then you would LOVE Dream Theater. I would recommend starting with their earlier stuff, like Images and Words, Awake and Scenes from A Memory. They are seriously the best and most respected band in the prog metal genre.
Thanks for all the info man! I was just checking out their wiki page and a few songs and I don't know how I haven't listened more to these guys! I've heard of mike portnoy of course but didn't know this was his band (I heard he left). I plead ignorance, like Ruben! Rock on 🤘🏻
You're welcome! Mike Portnoy did leave the band. In my opinion their best work was with him. The new drummer is excellent but Portnoy was the soul of the band in many fans' minds. That's why I recommended earlier releases. They have PLENTY of albums with Portnoy - many, many years worth of material. I'm so jealous that you're just discovering them and you get to enjoy the newness. Peace out from a Portnoy fan girl. :)
So I've been listening to the band most of the day.... goddamn! Why couldn't I have discovered these guys 20 years ago! Takes me back to my early teens and Queensryche and Type O Negative. I know lots of metal bands the singer screams more than sings, but there is something special about a guy who can really SING. James , Mike, John, and the rest of the guys rock! 🤘🏻🖖🏼🍻 PS I just realized they have several johns and mikes, James , Jordan, lots of f'ing Js. 😜
You mentioned Queensryche and that is definitely one of their influences. DT is known to pay tribute to their favorite bands by incorporating their sound into their songs. If you listen to the album Scenes From A Memory, you'll hear many influences you might recognize. That's because Portnoy brought a bunch of his favorite albums into the studio and lined them up where the band could see them for inspiration (the story goes something like that). Portnoy is a MASSIVE music fan - he's like an encyclopedia. Anyway, one of the albums he brought to the studio was Operation Mindcrime. :) Scenes From A Memory is one of my favorite albums of all time. I hope you get to check that one out. It's a masterpiece through and through. There is a song called Home - a lot of DT fans adore that song and call it their favorite. The melodies are soooo good. There is also a 23-minute epic called A Change of Seasons that will blow your mind. :) Dream Theater's music is of the highest quality all around.
Octavarium, Fatal Tragedy, The Glass Prison, As I am, Count of Tuscany, Constant Motion, Peruvian Skies, Pull Me Under, On The Backs of Angels, Lost Not Forgotten, A Rite of Passage, In the Presence of Enemies I and II, A Change of Seasons, and this song are on regular rotation for me. Also, if you're looking for more prog metal Devin Townsend and Ne Obliviscarius are worth checking out too.
Yeah this song here is quite possibly the single greatest and most complete rock song of all time, regardless of whether it be Prog rock/metal or any other genre offshoot of rock! IMO that is.
Could you react to either Stream of Consciousness from the same concert or Illumination Theory Live from the boston opera house? I would really like to see your reaction to that. Also I just subscribed to you because you really focus on the music and are keeping quiet while listening, unlike other reaction channels. Keep up the fine work !
Nick Colbert check out Ron Jarzombek's work, A band Spastic Ink is a good choice, members and Ron himself also are associated with bands like: Blotted Science, Spiral Architect, Watchtower - this music is insane!
Hi Nick! Yeah, I'd call Dream Theater prog-metal for sure, although as musicians they are each very capable of playing (and do) in other styles. I'd describe Dream Theater as a mix between the heyday 70's prog bands in terms of song length and complexity (Yes, Gentle Giant, etc) plus Metallica and Megadeth plus a heavy instrumental focus.
Daniel Verberne thanks man! Since this video I've listened to the band quite a bit and they really rock! I've been listening to metal since 1990 or so and I don't know how in the hell I missed the boat on this band! I'd heard of them sure but never gave them a listen. Maybe it was the name, it seems sort of strange I I figured they were some Trans-Siberian Orchestra type band or something. I don't know. I loved Tool and Queensryche and some other prog metal bands but i never got into these guys til I saw this video. Cheers and rock on friend! 🍻🤘🏻🖖🏼
I love all of Dream Theater and have been listening to them since 1995. My first exposure to them was the album, (Images and Words).. The whole album is Beyond what Music has ever been. I grew up on Progressive Rock with groups like Rush, Alan Parsons, Boston, Kansas, etc...on and on... Well, it happens to be that these guys grew up on them too. In fact, if you take the time to review their past, there is a RUclips video. I"ll go find and link it to you. Quite an interesting story these young men have. Here's a hint, Juilliard for one of the guys at 9 years old. Guitar player, Drummer, and Bassist went to Burkley School of Music, and to get in there you already have to be good. Well, these three (as told by them) went there, met there, got bored with the school because it was boring to them. They had already succeeded way past the Professor, so they dropped out and formed Dream theater. Now in all my 68 years on earth. Music has been in my blood from the beginning.. That said, I have never heard Musicians play their instruments in such detail and crispness. Every note is perfect. The Guitar is constantly playing together. And the time signature" I mean come on... No one does that. Those Bands I mentioned above were the bands and music the influenced these guys, and you can hear it in the music. Yet it is by obvious just what we witness when there playing, that there is nor have ever been a Band with the Richness and Taste as Dream Theater. Hope I sold ya.. you"ll never go back. I"m addicted.. I need a Dream Theater fix ever so once in a while. Just to remind me that there is still good music out there. It's just hidden in all the Crap there playing on the radio. Check out RUclips, there are hundreds of Dream Theater vids. It"s nice to just listen to them, but it's much more fun watching them Play.. They are gods.!! ruclips.net/video/_6ISFr8xoLI/видео.html
If you want to delve into a truly amazing work from them, I recommend the whole second disk of "six degrees of inner turbulence". It's a single song (divided into parts) of 45 minutes or so, but you have to have the lyrics on to make sure you understand the message and the meaning of the song. It's absolutely amazing. If you want something on the smaller side, my favorite song by DT is "Voices", also about the same subject as SDoIT. Again, lyrics on would be best. Although it's something you don't comment on too much, so I'm not sure how at ease you'd be at commenting on them.
Dream Theater "Metropolis part 1-The Miracle and the Sleeper" or "The Glass Prison", anyway pick one of the suggested and you get a good one for sure and when you listened at some of them listen "Misunderstood", it's my favorite of DT but i don't think is the one you should listen at the start
I didn't realize til half way through when they started showing the clips that the song was about David Koresh and the Branch Dividians. That was big news here in the states when I was a kid
Well I guess more accurately it's about all cults and churches that are evil. I also got a glimpse of the Hale Bop comet guy, what was their name? Heaven's Gate, that's it! A powerful song. Of course I personally consider all organized religions cults, these examples were simply more stark. 😜🍻🤘🏻🖖🏼
yes i have seen them live it was literally 3 hours of them playing! i thought that without support they will play max 1,5 hour... max! but they are just beasts!
nice luke cage and daredevil posters man...just listen to all their albums man..six degrees of inner turbulence is a great 2 disc album!!!..metropolis pt 2 is a awesome album..their all perfect albums..awake is awesome..train of though..falling into infinity is a beautiful album as well... you have been missing out..do not miss seeing them anymore..ive seen them 6 times..they r great just saw the astonishing album here n Florida!!..that album is just astonishing..awesome concept album as metropolis pt 2...they are the prog gods..petrucci and john myung are my string gods !!!! DREAMTHEATER FOR LIFE!!!!
Cheers from Norway! Speaking of progressive metal bands - I know you've already reacted to Leprous, but there's a couple more from Norway you should check out. Pagan's Mind and Circus Maximus! Both are amazing, and like Dream Theater they both got ridiculously talented guitar players. Neither of those two bands are quite as prog as DT though, so you know. Pagan's Mind is more "spacey" and power metal than DT, while Circus Maximus is more AOR-ish. Both of them are usually way more melodic than DT as well. It's tough to come with any song suggestions, but for Pagan's Mind I think I'd suggest Intermission because it contains my favourite solo of all time. It's tapping only and pretty fucking mindblowing. For Circus Maximus I'd suggest something from either Nine or Havoc. Architect of Fortune, Last Goodbye, Loved Ones, After the Fire, Burn After Reading or Chivalry maybe. Go for it! 😊
Late coming suggestion, Illumination Theory live. You will be moved. Imagine the band, with a backup choir, and an orchestra. It's a longer piece, so settle in for the time, but still superb music.
Ruben if you want some progressive technical music check out albums of these bands: Spastic Ink (... this music is crazy, and you will be blown away definetaly), Blotted Science, Spiral Architect, Watchtower (these bands are simmilar to Spastic Ink, if I am not wrong these all bands have a link between the members, especially Ron Jarzombek who creates this insane progressive music)
I don't think you would but if you really wanted troll everyone you could react to The Whirlwind by Transatlantic - live from shepherds bush. It has the same drummer as here........oh by the way it is a 1hr20min song......that's the bit that trolls everyone, maybe one to keep up the sleeve. On dream theatre I've always liked the live version of Octovarium a lot or Metropolis, Peruvian Skies and Take the time both off of once in LiveTime have cool twists near the end you'd probably like. Sorry to overload you with all my words
Man, if you liked the Guitar playing of John Petrucci here then react to these 2 great songs, Hollow Years (Live in Budokan Version) and The Best of Times (Studio version, Non Live).. So much emotion from DT, it will melt your heart.
Man I was going to watch this entire video but I just couldn't do it, I had to cut after the solo. It's too depressing. I don't think I've listened to the whole song in like six years at least, I just can't deal with how sad it is even though it's a great piece of music at its finest.
The face everyone has when JP goes nuclear.
John needs to save some pussy for the rest of us.
In the name of Petrucci!
Oh yes😂🤘🎸
Petrucci is god
@@Moskal91 oh yeees!
Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons. A bit long, but certainly worth the time. 🙂
best song from DT for me
I prefer Six Degrees of inner turbulence or Octavarium
The first time I heard Dream Theater was 'Pull me under' on the radio when I was driving. I had to pull over because they moved me so much I could not drive and listen to them at the same time. My reaction 'who the fuck is this!!!'.
That's the first DT song I've ever heard also :)
he was stunned by the magic of real music
You're the MAN!!!!!! Thanks for giving it a shot, I know it's long but so worth it! :)
If you want to listen more....Listen to Metropolis Pt.2 Album ..It's a concept album. Listen to start to finish reading lyrics. You'll enjoy the record...
No need to react though..
If you want to react then, react to "The Spirit Carries on live Score"
Yeah but MTP.2 in Live at to the Marquee is better..
I can tell just after 1 video that this guy is a genuine music fan, can't fake it, though a lot of channels try, good job!
Ironicly they will play in the Netherlands this month ..unfortunately I won't be able to see them. Better luck next time :)
Ruben Buijs why not?
Ruben Buijs I saw them in April in Tilburg. Unforgettable show.
Did you see how many people want to
See you react to Stream of Consciousness by Dream Theater? That solo may be the greatest ever!
You have to listen Metropolis. But the studio version, unfortunately the singer is out of tune in the live shows.
The best of Dream Theater is in studio.

people who come to watch this concert are obviously not normal people, they are all have pretty good acknowledge about rock music
THIS is why they are DT. They're a unique and life loving band. My first show was in '93 in NH. Myung has always been my bass hero. John, I was in the front row in the 2003 outdoor after the show. Thanks for shaking my hand. You inspire me.

Saw them about 15 times in the Netherlands go and see them and listen to their best song the count of Tuscany
“Justifying violence
Citing from the holy book
Teaching hatred in the name of god”
How many atrocities have been committed in the name of god?
Too many :(
Octavarium, Fatal Tragedy, The Glass Prison, As I am, Count of Tuscany, Constant Motion, Peruvian Skies, Pull Me Under, On The Backs of Angels, Lost Not Forgotten, A Rite of Passage, In the Presence of Enemies I and II, A Change of Seasons, and this song are on regular rotation for me.
Also, if you're looking for more prog metal Devin Townsend and Ne Obliviscarius are worth checking out too.
You really need to do Dream Theater- Hollow years live at the budokan. A lot of people agree its one of the best live performances of all time!
Yeah this song here is quite possibly the single greatest and most complete rock song of all time, regardless of whether it be Prog rock/metal or any other genre offshoot of rock! IMO that is.
12:28 that moment when you see Portnoy on the Drums interacting with the audience and remember these days
can you do stream of counsciousness from the same show?

LMFAO the solo xD
To me one of best music of DT.
Ahhhhh the old and good times of DT.
you need to make more dream theater reactions lml
Dream Theater - Stream of Consciousness
I'd like to see your reaction from "Hollow Years" from the same Live at Budokan concert :D let me know if you record it!
Damn I need to get back into progressive metal! Is that what you would call these guys? They remind me a bit of classic Queensryche.
Yes, Dream Theater are pretty much the gods of progressive metal. Check out the albums Awake and Scenes From A Memory.
Nick Colbert check out Ron Jarzombek's work, A band Spastic Ink is a good choice, members and Ron himself also are associated with bands like: Blotted Science, Spiral Architect, Watchtower - this music is insane!
Progressive Gods are Opeth And Dream Theater. Both are my favorites.
Hi Nick! Yeah, I'd call Dream Theater prog-metal for sure, although as musicians they are each very capable of playing (and do) in other styles. I didn't realize til half way through when they started showing the clips that the song was about David Koresh and the Branch Dividians. That was big news here in the states when I was a kid
It was big news everywhere..I can also remember it being showed on TV.

Cheers from Norway! Speaking of progressive metal bands - I know you've already reacted to Leprous, but there's a couple more from Norway you should check out. Pagan's Mind and Circus Maximus!
I also agree with the others who suggest A Change of Season by this same band. :)
Lords of black ghost of you

Man, if you liked the Guitar playing of John Petrucci here then react to these 2 great songs, Hollow Years (Live in Budokan Version) and The Best of Times (Studio version, Non Live).. So much emotion from DT, it will melt your heart.
