9.7 / 10 Amazing song even with the carnival music section . A 30 second section doesn't ruin a 17 minute song for me. Great build up, atmosphere, and then it rocked heavy as hell but was still amazingly melodic. BTW The gutarist John Petrucci is a practicing Catholic and has a lot of religious undertones in many of his lyrics.

@VinAnd Sori Guys.... "In The Presence of Enemies Pt II" has 4 movements or parts (III. Heretic, IV. The Slaughter of the Damned, V. The Reckoning (instrumental) VI. Salvation). Likewise "In the Presence of Enemies Pt. I" has 2 movements (I. Prelude (instrumental...) II. Resurrection). In totality... this is a concept song. In concept songs and/or albums, instrumentals are AS MUCH a part of the story telling as are the lyrics. The "interlude" that you didn't like or get is "The Reckoning" part of the story... the fight!! it is frantic, chaotic and the band just conveys that. You can't say "that part shouldn't be there or it wasn't needed" ... well it if is not there then the song as far as the band is concerned is not complete. Another detail you miss is the "recurring themes" and this is very common of concept songs. Right at the very end of the Reckoning comes a recurring theme from Part 1 which leads to the "Salvation" part.

I’m a massive fan of DM but sometimes the need to express technical ability can be way self indulgent with thee guys.
And they’re very inconsistent with the quality of their lyrics too, sometimes very basic, not well constructed, which this song shows for me..
      But otherwise I’m a fan…😂

  • @azdarkforce

I totally see the side of not liking the interlude.
But the instrumental part of the music sometimes can tell the story themselves and the really really fast part tells how far things have escalated, how dicey, how touch-and-go the fight between the good and the evil gets before the story reaches the conclusion.
I get not liking what people decide they need to put into the stories and the same goes for musicians, but dissmissing that fast section as just showing off is missing the point.

Everyone please... a prayer and thanks to drummer Alan White of Yes, who passed away @age 72 (R.I.P.)... Alan White had played in John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band... the joined Yes in 1972, replacing founding drummer Bill Bruford... played on the live record 'Yessongs' and a bulk of Yes records... He and (late) bassist Chris Squire were 1 of the greatest rhythm sections in rock n' roll, and inspired bands like Dream Theater... as well as Rush, Iron Maiden, Tool, Mastodon, etc...

even in those wanker parts i feel the vibe or mood or the feeling that something is wrong - that's chaos right there, it fits the song but I can understand why people wouldn't like that.

You guys need to see the trippy video for this song that came with the special edition. It was 2 discs with the 2nd being a dvd 5.1 version of the album with extras. They also have a trippy video for The Ministry Of Lost Souls, the song right before Enemies part 2 that concludes the album.

hahahi i appreciate your opinion about this one. For me (and just for me and maybe some fans) the begginning and the end of the song, is the "real song"..but when i hear the middle part thats the moment when i say: "YEA HERE COMES THE FUN.. THIS GUYS ARE GONNA NAIL IT.. We will continue to hear the rest of the story later".

It’s the point of prog, to really experiment and take music through the journey and see where it can go. This is really music for musicians. To travel through the modes and the farthest variation.
BUT, this era of DT is not my favorite there any many of these tangents that do in fact go to far

    • @alanalanis2257
      @alanalanis2257 2 года назад +3

I love it. As a matter of fact, I don't think they go off on tangents enough. The chaotic parts resonate with my soul. I also feel that it's an important part that compliments how the lyrics tell the storyline.

I think in this song they are acceptable, but after Systematic Chaos Jordan Rudess went too far with his digital and eletronic experimentation and the overcomplication of the whole keyboard ordeal left fans with a bland and boring experience, going against everything Moore and even Derek had done. Jordan is abismal in some aspects of his work with Dream Theater

    • @scorpiusbalthazar4327

@@alanalanis2257 Dream Theater is the only band that I like every single thing they've done, even when they were known as The Majesty. I have not heard a single note I did not like by them. There's shit by Pink Floyd that I don't care for and they're the greatest band that ever lived for me. Alice Cooper is my absolute favorite and I don't like everything he's done either. Only Dream Theater.

This is not DT's best tbh. And this is coming from a DT superfan. Even I lose a bit of interest in that instrumental interlude.
Their newer stuff (like, their last 4 albums aside from The Astonishing) are quite great.
